WOW!! Where do I begin, God never comes as my family says but he always sends. I had my thyroid condition (hyperthyroidism/enlarged goiter) since the age of seven and have been suffering with it since. I am now 20 years old and the problems it has caused leading up to this age is beyond explainable. For a few years now, I was seeing an adult Endo doctor and to my understanding he didn't know what he was doing! On June 30, I went to the Emergency Room because for the last two weeks I was having pain while swallowing anything. Anyhew, they ran tests and did a CT scan that showed a massive goiter with toxic thyroid levels. Long story short, was admitted for 3 days to do surgery and they did nothing. I left everything in my hands and looked up a surgeon of my own to get a second opinion and boy was I happy! I came upon Dr. Larry Shemen. The following week (July 10, 2018) I met with him and that's all it took; he took a look at the CT scan which revealed all and the following month he said "Let's schedule you for the surgery." A week ago, I did the surgery and yes at first for the couple of days I wasn't my normal self, but today (August 15, 2018) I can honestly say I am myself again, only 100x healthier all because of Dr. Shemen. And yes, while there are other good doctors out there, I know they couldn't have been better than Dr. Shemen. My neck is now beautiful, not to mention normal, and I could care less about the incision scar because it was done so precise and with care it doesn't bother me at all! I want to thank Dr. Shemen for his genuine personality, Jeff, his scheduler for being so kind as well and always keeping me updated, and his staff for treating his patients with care, which is the most important. It took 14 years and finally I found a doctor that knew what he was doing, literally!! DR. Shemen knows his stuff and he's excellent in his profession, couldn't and would never have asked for a better surgeon than him. If you are in need of a Surgeon in this field, take my advice you will never regret it and will see the results with Dr. Shemen. I highly recommend him and now my friends and family finally see the beautiful neck that was hiding behind that toxic goiter for so many years all because of one man, DR. LARRY SHEMEN! So I'm an 80 year old man, living a healthy life because of this amazing Dr. I was 49 years old when I was at my worst, I had been misdiagnosed by a local internist with bronchitis for 3 months I had laryngitis, only when I was pressed by my family to further investigate my situation did I visit a local Ear nose and throat Dr. Hamburg, who highly urged me to have immediate surgery, for fear I had cancer that would quickly invade my lymph nodes and take my life. I started going to Dr. Shemen after he helped my dad go through cancer treatments. I have always had sinus problems and my father told me that there was no one he trusted more than Dr. Shemen. Well he was right! After seeing several other doctors and not getting answers, Dr. Shemen finally told me that I had a deviated septum amongst other problems and that surgery would be the best solution. I was very nervous, but Dr. Shemen was extremely professional and eased my worries on the day of my surgery. I am a little over a month post op and have had several post op visits during which Dr. Shemen has answered all of my questions and checked my recovery status. So far I am doing great, I am feeling better everyday, and I can honestly say that I have not breathed this well my whole life! As a Canadian, I realize wait times for health care can sometimes be dangerously long. A year ago I had thyroid cancer and went to a brilliant, well qualified and very nice surgeon, Dr. Larry Shemen in New York. I had an appointment the next day not only for a consult but also a biopsy. A few weeks later I had surgery. I could talk and eat right away, I never had any pain and you can barely even see the scar. I had very good care at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in Queens. Dr. Shemen's staff are extremely courteous, helpful and knowledgeable especially Jeff, the co-ordinator. Dr. Shemen performed thyroglossal cyst surgery on me. I was extremely nervous about possibly scarring based on photos I had seen online of people post op. My surgery went extremely well. I am thrilled to be able to state that my scarring is minimal just six weeks after the procedure. It will only continue to improve. While at the hospital one of the nurses who prepped me as well as the anesthesiologist who attended reassured me that Dr. Shemen was "the guy" for this procedure. A very good experienced surgeon. My son had so many polyps obstructing his breathing that the first time we took him to Dr. Shemen he referred us to an allergist. After several months my son was ready for surgery. Post surgery, he slept upright for days and as healed, and the packing from his nose was removed, he said that he hadn't smelled anything in more than six years.
