Shelly Pie has an enjoyable setting, and a clean historical venue. On top of the beautiful location, we ordered a medium pizza with sausage, pepperoni, peppers and mushrooms. Yum and double yum!!! Have eaten there often over the last couple of years. Tonight I had a dish brought to the table that was still frozen in the middle. The response from our waitress was less than ideal and it made the experience very uncomfortable and awkward. Have been wanting to try Shelly Pie forever. When some friends that frequent SP suggested we meet for dinner we were pumped. They do have alcohol or you can BYOB for $10. We started with the Beans and Greens that were quite good and a large salad that was OK. We then ordered a couple of pizzas to share. The pies are rather thick and doughy with a bubbly crusty edge. We had the Spinach & Tomato which is a white pizza and some garlic flavor. It was the most popular pie of the night. Also ordered a pie with pepperoni, sausage and mushroom. A hit! The pies do not lack for toppings and we had leftovers to take home that heated up in the air fryer perfectly. A fun night and good pizza! read more

Came back for the 1st time in a number of years...although I ordered on-line for pickup. Used an app called "Slice" - ordering was smooth and easy, and my food was ready on time when I arrived. The staff I interacted with was very courteous. Got a pizza, some garlic knots and an order of cheesy bread. Price for everything was quite reasonable. Pizza was terrific, garlic knots great! The cheesy bread was decent, but the portion was enormous! It was definately more food than a coupla guys can handle in one sitting, so we'll hope the leftovers warm up okay in the microwave tomorrow. Nicely done! read more

I completed a pick up order at this location. I called my order in and it was ready in 20 minutes. The Parking lot is in the rear of building, so threw me off a little as I went through a dark alley to park. After entering the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the inside was. The restaurant was huge, and very clean. They had lots of tables available for seating. I went to the pick up station and my food was ready at the quoted time. I took our food home and it was still warm when we got there. We ordered a cheese pizza and a steak calzone. The crust on the ends of the pizza was huge and bubbly and they put a TON of cheese on the pie. The medium looked like a standard large or xl pizza. When we grabbed a cut of pizza, the cheese fell right off because the dough under the cheese was spread pretty thin, so it could not hold the cheese. :( Too much cheese for me, but some may like it. The calzone was pretty good, but it only had steak and cheeses inside, some peppers and onions would have been great. They gave us some marinara sauce on the side for dipping and it was warmed up. The sauce is actually really, really, good. It had a hint of sweetness and basil, and wasn't bitter at all. Overall, this place is a staple in the neighborhood and I have heard so much about them. First pizza of the year, and it's incredible! I've never had Shelly Pie, but I've heard great reviews and it absolutely lived up to the hype. It's everything you want in a pizza place: good variety of toppings, good crust, nice sauce, menu items other than pizza, etc. I tried the classic cheese pizza and a cheese calzone. Both of them were excellent. The pizza is absolutely humongous! A large, which is $15, was a whopping 19"! Other places have that size at $22...great deal here! The our crust is thicker than average but it's quality. They are heavy on the cheese, which I personally like. Expect it to be messy as they are also pretty liberal with the sauce and very liberal with toppings from what I've seen. When the box came I did notice the pizza isn't perfectly uniform, but honestly, who cares? It tastes great and they use quality ingredient, offer good flavors, and fantastic prices. The calzone was also great. Very large! I shared mine and 1/2 a calzone is enough for a filling meal. It is stuffed with a whole lot of (mozzarella I think) cheese and ricotta. The bread part if the calzone was crispy and had butter and/or garlic in the top. Perfect. Heavy and delicious. The sauce was also wonderful. Came with a whole mini bowl of it, and the sauce had a nice sweetness with some herbs too. Overall, you can't beat these portion sizes or prices. Plenty of high quality leftovers. While someone in my household didn't love it, I thought it was great (said it looked sloppy and poorly made, but again, why does it really matter). Worth the trip to get the Vinny Pie from Shelly Pie! Great puffy dough. We ordered too much (go for the small) unless you want leftovers;) they reheat nicely. My only observation is the dough while nice needs a bit more salt... great reuse of the old VFW! Shelly Pie is wonderful; I just wish it was located closer to downtown Pittsburgh. But like Vincent's Pizza Park was decades ago, the trek is part of the experience. This is difficult because I genuinely loved this place. Like get fired up anytime suggested shellys. Someone would say "Yo you wanna go to shellys tonight?" And I would always enthusiastically say " F*** Yeah LETS GO!!" However that was than... something dramatically changed in the last year or so here. It has become a pizza place that can't cook pizza. I've tried this place 3x hoping each time, that the last time was a bad night. How can a pizza be both burnt and raw at the sametime!?!? Each and every time the pizza dough has been raw. That coupled with the massive amount of uncooked all purpose flour you can find caked on the bottom of each slice just makes it very unappetizing. We were early to the Woodland Hills football game and a friend recommended Shelly Pie, so we decided to give it a try. Wow! Words can NOT describe the perfection of this pizza. I consider myself somewhat of a pizza connoisseur and this is pizza I'd drive out of my way to eat again and again. For Pittsburghers, I'd drive through a tunnel during rush hour for this pizza! That's how out-of-this-world it is! My husband also loved the crispiness of the wings. Seriously, we could not stop talking about this place! The staff was fun and friendly, even with a packed house. Of course the pizza is #1 here but don't hesitate to explore the menu. Fish sandwich during lent was good. Not hand battered, I don't think so, but def a good fish. All the pictures on yelp made this place look too good to pass up. Ultimately is seemed I hit them on an off night. The bar area to the left is where the signs point you to with staff standing around talking to regulars.it took a while to get a menu and drinks, then I sat there as people who came in after me got their food. I would have asked one of the two waitresses, but they were so busy I could never catch them. Once my pizza came out it looked amazing. Once I bit into it I just wanted to leave. The crust wasn't done on the bottom despite being burned on the top.the pizza was soaked on top, but it was water not grease. The cheese had no flavor and was stringy which made it tough to chew. The entire time im not getting service the older waitress was complaining about being too busy(she was) and the regulars at the bar kept pulling them in wanting to talk. On top of that for two small beers and a medium pizza it was almost 40$.I was one person and I sat there over 90 mins and left hungry. A great stop to grab a slice of pizza or two or three. The pies here are just that, thick cheesy, and a good crust. The size of this restaurant is decent with a large-ish parking lot to go with it. Thank goodness you don't have to pay for parking. The staff here are friendly especially during those chaotic prime hours. I've had the food here a time or two but did dine in at least once and boy was there a party in there. To go has been good and dinging in is great as well, just get your damn pizza party on! This place is popular among the locals and so if you already know then you know. Everything I've gotten from here has been a delight so no complaints. Good, sweet tea. Gooey pizza, in my experience, piping hot, which is the best. The UHSHSHSHSAAHAHAH, is the best part when biting into something hot. There's a bunch of food here that isn't pizza as well, so there's some options if you don't want a tasty pie but a large menu indeed. Don't come here if you're on a diet. As far as we could tell, we were part of 3 tables of the hour. The table of 4 near us was done and ordered a pizza to go. We ordered burgers and a meatloaf sandwich. The food was okay, but not brought as requested. I asked for no garden/setup and the cook still put lettuce and onion on it. Our server never asked if we wanted refills on our drinks. We all had coke and turners tea. I'm sure if it was beer it would have been a higher priority to ask for refills. It was not busy in house by any means, and we didn't feel like we were given the attention we deserved/needed. We do not plan on ordering online or returning again soon. Add- Sure, let's place blame on something completely irrelevant to the topic. Because it's easy to do. Retaining help or hiring has nothing to do with the experience. Making sure the training is correct is. Greet, get drink. 4 minutes later check I'd ready. Put in order 8 minutes later check on drinks 12 minutes after order placed food should be done. Deliver food. Check on drinks. Pre bus table. Offer dessert (this was done) As explained in your own words, you're friends that wanted to get into something you have no experience in and this is why I'm not the only bad review. 1: very friendly staff and although I just got takeout, the atmosphere was a pleasant surprise given where it is. 2: it's hilarious that people are docking them stars because the pizza is asymmetrical and not aesthetically perfect. To me, that is a sign of a good pizza! If you want aesthetically perfect pizza, have fun eating chain brand pizzas the rest of your life. 3: this pizza was not actually my taste, but I'm not docking stars because you can 100% tell that they use good quality ingredients and it was cooked evenly. Ordered delivery 3/11/23 from Shelly Pie from UberEats, this would be the 2nd time in less than 30 days. First time I ordered in late February, ordered a large pie with pepperoni & sausage, after reviewing the reviews about similar pizza to Vincent's in Forrest Hills. After getting the pizza, we realized that the dough was severely undercooked especially in the crust area and uneatable, with the middle of the pie being extremely thin that the pizza was sticking to the crust. We were disappointed but thought maybe it was an "off night" for the place. We decided to order again last night, this time a small pepperoni & sausage, whole sausage & peppers/onions hoagie and garlic knots. Again the pizza was very undercooked in the crust area, so 1/3rd of the pizza we threw out and the middle was so thin, made it hard to take a slice out from the box. The sausage peppers & onions hoagie was very disappointing, barely any sausage or onions or peppers, the consistency looked like it was cooking for a long time in a slow cooker and had no flavor or substance. The best part of the meal was the garlic knots, which were nice but not anything special. So after 2 times trying this place in less than 30 days, I probably will not order again and rather just drive to pick up from Vincent's. Whenever I am home, I always stop at my favorite pizza place. Vincent's is closed on Mondays, so I thought I would try a Shelly Pie because a few friends and family said it was better than Vincent's. Apparently, the owner worked at Vincent's. It's not the worst pizza I have ever had but it's definitely not as good as Vincent's. I can't put my finger on whether it was the sauce, crust , cheese, or pepperoni but it was no Vincent's. It just was not a good pizza. I have never amended a review before but felt the need after the owners comment. Yes, I compared you to Vincent's for three reasons. 1. Those that recommended Shelly Pie told me it was better than Vincent's. False in my opinion. 2. If you don't want to be compared to Vincent's.....stop trying to look like Vincent's! You wrap your take -out pizza in the EXACT same way except you use brown paper and Vincent's uses white. 3. Stop making your pizza look like Vincent's! See the photos I attached. I am a big supporter of Mom & Pop places, however that does not mean I give special treatment when writing reviews. If I have a bad experience or dislike the product, I will absolutely give a bad review and if it warrants compare to a place I like. Their pizza is delicious (especially the crust, it's flavorful but not salty like many other places) and their service is always friendly, even when they are very busy). 5 star pizza potential with 2 star consistency. Their pizzas are never lacking on size but do lack a proper cook. When their pizza is cooked properly, they are a top 5 pizza in pittsburgh, when it's improperly cooked, it's a bottom 5. There have been issues with pizzas being cooked improperly since they first opened their doors. A pizza from here is best when it's cooked to a nice dark brown char on the crust top and bottom. Unfortunately it's a rare thing to get and I usually get it undercooked with doughy crust or burnt on one side but raw on the other. Because of this for the last year or so, I've always ordered the pizza extra well done with dark charred crust and sometimes I get it perfect and other times really off. The last order I made after instructing to cook it well done with dark charred crust, I received a pizza with no color to the crust and the underside was no color. The dough was so undercooked I had to use my oven to finish cooking it. It's bad enough to get an undercooked raw pizza by default, it's inexcusable when you specifically ask for well done toasted crust. Their pizza toppings also used to be a huge amount, the last few pizzas I've gotten were lacking in toppings. It's understandable that you sometimes you hire a worker without any desire to do a good job or care about their job but a pizza or any dish should never leave the kitchen without being inspected by a competent worker and verified everything is correct and cooked properly. Over all this place is a great resturant, the food other than the pizzas are huge and tasty, if they can just get the pizza to be cooked with better consistency, this would be one of the best pizzas in pittsburgh. I would recommend anyone giving shellys a try, just make sure to specify how you want your pizza cooked for best results. 5 stars omitting pizza from the review. 2 star pizza with 5 star food. 3 stars over all. read more

I moved here from upstate NY, I couldn't find a pizza shop that had the right pizza, some people over baked, some people underbaked, not enough sauce, pepperoni's , cheese... weird crust... NOT THIS PLACE. The crust is thick, tasteful and perfectly cooked. The whole pizza had layers of crunchy pepperoni and thick cheese, I usually don't even eat the crust but I did this time. BEWARE!!! Save yourself the trouble and order elsewhere. There are so many pizza places around. We ordered Shelly Pie through Doordash on Sunday. A group of us were watching football and one decided to order a pizza for us to all go in on. Pizza is a regular thing for us and we have tried most in the area. We ordered a large pizza, half with various meats and half with onions. With the toppings this pizza is expensive, so you expect it to be worth it. The pizza arrived and we unwrapped it only to find that all the toppings were on the whole pizza. My friend called Shelly Pie about it and they said they had been having issues with Doordash. In my opinion if you are having issues either fix it or discontinue the service with them. He said he wasn't worried about that but simply how to rectify the situation. We had vegetarians in the group. They said they could make a small pizza with onions which we could pick up in 20 minutes and we agreed. This defeated the purpose of Doordash since we were trying not to leave the house, but we agreed. He returned with the small pizza and as I was unwrapping it he made a joke about there being meat. Unfortunately when I unwrapped it there was a pepperoni sitting right there. I don't know if someone thought they were being funny, in which case I do not appreciate the joke. Or perhaps someone was just being careless. Either way I will not be returning to Shelly Pie. The pizza was not very good at all. That was a consensus. It had almost no sauce on it and was a little underdone. Plus the onions on top were an absolute joke. There was literally pieces of onion the size of my hand. That is simply called being lazy. First time ordering from Shelly Pie and I can't wait to order again. I know they're known for their pizza, but I was craving wings and beans and greens. Just wow. So good!!! The wings were perfectly crispy and very meaty... some of the best wings that I've had in a long, long time. I intended to save the beans and greens for later, but I didn't stand a chance. ---- I ordered again! The crust was fantastic, and a size medium is most likely an XL by any other pizza joint. Absolutely prime pizza. Pittsburghers of a certain age realize that you can't go to the old Vincent's and get an old-style pie any more. But wait! Shelly (eponymously) was apparently a waitress there back in the day, and she's preserved all that was luscious and good about the place that was. All this might be an irrelevant legend. The present-day truth is that the pizzas here are fabulous, ample, and scrumptious. And they come in varieties that Vinnie never imagined. What's more is that the pizzas here are just one slice of a full menu, where everything that I've tried leaves me hungering for more. There's plenty of parking and a healthy crowd most evenings.
