Shells St Pete was by far my favorite restaurant in the immediate St. Pete Beach area we went to. Unpretentious and easy in and out I found Shells to be the most solid option for the goods near where we stayed. Service was spot on and dining outside is always a pleasure. I was a bit leery with all the 5-star reviews of this joint but accurate they were. What I loved was the Shells seafood pasta. Creamy, decadent, and delicious and filled with a slew of seafood! Also enjoyed several $5 margaritas with that salty rim. My dining experience was probably one of the most enjoyable during our week stay. Solid joint for all thing's seafood and then some. Oh, I almost forgot, my most favorite dish almost even more so than my pasta... drumroll! The Clam Chowda! I had a cup then went back for a bowl... It was so rich and chucked full of clams! New to Florida, we are out and about on Christmas Eve, checking out the Saint Petersburg area. We stopped at a local bar first, and had a few drinks, then asked the locals where a good spot to eat was. The first two places were closed, so we took their third choice...Shells. The place is a no frills-divey-kind-of restaurant. The clam chowder was really good, but lacked the basic potatoes and celery that I am used to, and a good chowder. Very full of clams, though! My husband had a honey buffalo cheeseburger and said it was good. I had the pasta and shrimp. He asked me what kind of pasta I wanted. I asked for penne and got linguine! Lol Definitely not a big deal. I also got a skewer of large scallops. This place could've been absolutely amazing if the shrimp would've been grilled or something other than just boiled. The skewer of scallops was lightly grilled. The taste was good, although rather boring. It could've been so much more... presentation was a total zero. Would've been nice to have bread and butter brought to the table as well. When I asked about bread, the waiter said they don't serve any. Disappointed. All in all, the food was OK. My husband and I went to the St. Pete Beach Shells the night after Valentine's. I chose the 1 lb snow crab legs dinner and he ordered a salad and the jambalaya (at the waiters suggestion). I absolutely loved my crab legs. The parsley potatoes were cooked perfectly, and the cole slaw was yummy. My husband enjoyed his salad, followed by the jambalaya. He had a little left that he brought home for later. That was 2/15/24. It is now 2/18/24 and he just suggested we go there again tonight so he can have the jambalaya again. I think it's fair to say that he loved it! Also, they have all-day, everyday happy hour which was nice to take advantage of. We have to head back to Minnesota the end of this week and will miss Shells. Just we would have tried it sooner!!! read more

The lady taking my order was very quick, friendly and polite. When I went to pick up, there was a huuuge line for dine in. Take out had no line. I N F E C T I O N P R E V E N T I O N The restaurant area was packed. Esp during covid season, I wouldn't feel anywhere near comfortable, with the number of people here. Not much social distancing outside the front door or outdoor seating area. Masks were definitely not enforced here. Half the people were walking around, waiting in line or what not, without masks. I didn't see any hand sanitizing stations for customer use either. Inside the tables were social distanced though. F O O D Jambalaya: salty. Tasty. So many different items. Thin layer of rice on the bottom. Classic shrimp pasta: not as I remembered. There were different seafood items last time but this time, just shrimp + noodles. This is definitely a reasonably priced place to get some good food! Plus they have all day happy hour specials!! I got the $5 margarita and it was strong with nice balance taste, not too sweet. For food, I ordered the blackened grouper with the 'big easy' topping of tomato cream sauce, scallops, and shrimp. Grouper was well seasoned, firm but still juicy. I like how they put the topper on the side so I could distribute how I wanted. It was definitely a nice addition to the dish although they are very small scallops. The meal came with a side of rice and mixed veggies. The two sides were nicely seasoned and not an afterthought. Went well with the fish. Nice casual place to grab a bite. Really really good service. I ordered from DoorDash so didn't get a chance to see the atmosphere or experience the service. The shrimp tacos were very good but the shrimp were pretty chewy. However I added a side of veggies and it was little bits of carrots and huge pieces of onions. It almost looked like Cole slaw as well. Deff not like any seasonal veggies I've ever seen. Not impressed with that at all but the lobster bisque was good and they gave me tons of crackers with it! I'll prob try this place again and try something else. 9/2020: we finally made it back over here to experience some of their amazing food again! We were not disappointed. We got there around 8:15pm (they close at 9pm on Tuesday's now) and were seated immediately. Our server Trish was absolutely wonderful! Even though it was so late in the evening and close to their closing times she gave us phenomenal service with a smile! Parking can be tight here but they have overflow parking back behind the restaurant. I ordered The seafood pasta which includes clams shrimp and scallops and a beautiful garlic white wine sauce with linguine noodles. It was delicious! My husband ordered the special, salmon with a crabcake and shrimp skewers but he also added the Felix on top of it for the extra lobster affect. Again the food was amazing! We ended up taking food home with us and eat it the next day for lunch and it still tasted just as amazing. Highly suggest checking them out for an incredible meal! We brought my mother down to Treasure Island to show her the area and she really wanted some good seafood. After reading a few reviews on Yelp, Shells was on our list as a potential spot. While we were walking along the John's Pass area we overheard some random strangers and business owners talking about how good the food was at Shell's - word of mouth sealed the deal of where we were going to have dinner. We arrived around 8:30pm on a sunday night. There was plentry of parking and we were impressed with the mister fans outside the restaraunt. There is a cute little tiki area outdoors you can sit and enjoy tour meal or drinks but we choose to sit indoors. We were greeted warmly by Connie. She was attentive, funny and really made our meal that much more enjoyable. My mother ordered the pound of snow crab legs that came with potatoes and coleslaw. She devoured it and said the crab was excelelnt. My husband ordered the shrimp pasta. Lots of shrimp (and not the baby ones you see on salads) and the pasta was perfectly done! The white garlic cream sauce was excellent and portion size was big. We ended up taking some home and ate it later in the evening! I ordered the big easy which is blackened mahi with veggies and rice with a tomato cream sauce. I am not kidding when I saw in-order more sauce (and Connie was excellent in getting me a lot) so I could literally soak my rice in the sauce. My husband and I come down from Orlando about once every three months and we will certainly be back to explore more of the menu! read more

I will always one of of the best places for chowder and crab cakes in all of Florida and I have been to many places that say they are great in chowder, but Shells chowder goes head and toes and beats Boston! Doesn't look like much outside and not on the beach as I hoped but omg was I pleasantly surprised! The first was the blasting a/c that I desperately needed lol I'm definitely not acclimated to walking in this Florida heat. 5 blocks from the beach felt like I was gonna die (yes I'm a little dramatic) I had the clam chowder and the baby lobster pasta. Let me first start with the clam chowder. Being from San Francisco (where in my opinion the best clam chowder is) my bar is set pretty high. I was very skeptical when I saw it had bacon in it but figured for $4 what did I really have to lose. Let me just say you MUST have a cup if you like chowder. It's so flavorful and perfectly creamy. Not watered down or too thick. I add Tabasco just be I love spicy chowder but I could have done without no problem. The Baby Lobster Pasta sauce is a very light buttery sauce. With it being 95 outside I definitely did not want a think heavy sauce. It was perfect for my liking. I did add a pit of park for a little break in flavor to add some saltiness. Lastly Ben my server was amazing. Stayed close enough that even with me being a needy customer I could just call him over and he was on top of anything I needed. 10/10 would absolutely recommend this place! read more

An excellent casual seafood place in St. Pete! The food was incredible. Each bite was better than the last. I got the Ultimate Combo with salmon Felix, shrimp, and a crab cake. The shrimp was to die for and the salmon Felix was delicious. The sauce and topping was out of this world. We also got the coconut shrimp appetizer and it was sweet, not too coconutty with a perfect crunch. You can tell it is hand breaded in house. My favorite meal of the whole trip. My fish was unbelievably salty, I think someone in the kitchen must have been walking with the salt and tripped which resulted in them spilling the salt onto my fish, and then the cook took it and my shrimp off of the grill too early because he/she was distracted due to the salt incident. The menu said grilled, not placed on the grill for a second, turned for a second and then plated. Both could have used more fire. I know that some of you are saying that I should have sent it back but I didn't, I'm not entirely sure why. I just ate what I could and left the rest. I'm giving 2 stars, one for the vegetables and one for the server who was completely innocent in this fiasco. While exploring St. Pete Beach, Fat Man Reviews headed into Shells Seafood for lunch. Shells advertise itself as an unassuming eatery serving a seafood-forward menu, plus imported beer & wine. I started with the Shells Clam Chowder. This dish comes with clams potatoes and bacon. The soup has a good amount of clams and bacon. The bacon is pretty chewy, while the broth is creamy and thick with a good clam flavor and nice amount of salt. The potatoes are diced pretty fine and kinda melt away, they could stand to be a bit bigger for texture. My fiancé had the Fried Mahi Sandwich and fries. This comes with tomato, lettuce, red onion and tarter sauce on a potato roll. The fish is a little overcooked and kinda dry. It also needs some seasoning. The fries were cooked well and seasoned pretty well. The tartar sauce had good flavor. I ordered the Fried Grouper Sandwich and fries. This sandwich also came with tomato, lettuce red onion and tarter sauce on a potato roll. The fries were cooked and seasoned well. Tarter sauce is creamy and slightly sweet. For me, this place has always been just okay compared to the other amazing seafood restaurants in the area. OK interior, OK food, and OK service. I've tried their seafood pastas, fried shrimp dinner, etc. The food isn't necessarily bad, but hasn't blown me out of the water. I find that the pasta sauce is a bit too watery and/or oily without the thickness you want in a pasta sauce. The service and beer selection are just okay as well. The interior of the restaurant feels very outdated--think mid-90s buffet restaurant. After the several trips we've had here, I think I'll continue to frequent my other favorite seafood places along the beaches. read more

My niece and I ate at Shells Seafood while vacationing last month in St Petersburg. Her birthday was the next day so we were celebrating early. We both ordered the Crab n Shrimp Trio. This was a half pound of snow crab, half pound of dungeness crab and a half pound of peel and eat shrimp served with a side of coleslaw, red potatoes and hushpuppies. The crab was served hot, tender and juicy and came out of the shell with little effort. The shrimp was fresh. The sides were tasty too. We both enjoyed are meals. Our server was friendly and checked on us regularly. It was a Sunday evening so it wasn't too crowded which was nice. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed our meals.
