I was told that the reason for the charge was that two people worked on my car and that they each earned (?) $180 for that ! The lady I spoke with at European Auto was adamant about the charge being justifiable, but from my perspective, $360 per hour for labor cost is obvious price gouging. Furthermore, it is shown on my invoice that it took 2 hours to do the job, but again, it absolutely took less than one hour to do. It shouldn't matter how many people worked on the car. I mean, if a third person worked on the car, would there be yet another $180 charge? The only thing that should matter is how long it takes to get the job done.

I had it towed to the dealership in Rancho Mirage, where it took nearly two weeks just to diagnose the problem--followed by a jaw-dropping estimate of over $10,000 in repairs. Enter Desert Car Medics. That night, my Uber driver heading home recommended them--specifically Frank--as his personal mechanic for his Mini Cooper. After I got the dealer estimate I called and spoke with Frank, who immediately agreed to give me a second opinion. Within about a week, Frank had diagnosed the same issues it took the dealership two weeks to identify (I had only given him the dealer's computer diagnostic assessment). He was upfront and honest, explaining that there were a few variables that couldn't be confirmed until he got deeper into the work. His estimate? Around $4,100. Still not cheap, but dramatically better than the dealer. Now, full transparency: Desert Car Medics is a two-person shop, so there is a wait. It took another weeks before my car came up in the queue. Fortunately, with my son away at college back east, we had an extra car at home, so the timing worked out. Here's where the story takes a turn... When Frank finished the work, he called me with the final bill: just over $2,600. And that was after discovering and addressing a couple of additional issues once he got deep into the engine. Amazing? Absolutely. A Christmas miracle? Maybe. The car now runs as smoothly as it ever has--and for less than a quarter of what the dealership quoted. On top of the outstanding work, Frank was a pleasure to deal with. I'm not local, and his communication throughout the entire process was excellent--clear, honest, and timely. You can tell he genuinely cares about doing the job right and saving his customers money where he can. If you're anywhere in the greater Palm Springs/Coachella Valley area and need a mechanic you can trust--especially for European or higher-end cars--Desert Car Medics should be your first call. They did not charge me for this service even though it took them time out of their day.
