The Mrs and I sometimes get the opportunity to visit Shef's to grab a quick breakfast sandwich and a decent coffee. They're hot bagel sandwiches freshly made. Bacon egg and cheese with grilled onions and jalapeños on an everything bagel and another but with a sausage pattie. The ambience is basic but combined with good service and atmosphere, it has its own cozy charm, enough that we get a few minutes to remember what each other look like and have a chat. Lol. This happens every time we visit Shef's and I like that it helps us slow down a bit before the day's work. read more

You need to get there early as they can run out of bagels. The staff is fine and if you want a light colored plain bagel you best let them know. The everything bagels are very good. We came here on a random Thursday mid-morning and they had a steady crowd. Beware the parking lot!! I'm sure it gets busy on the weekend! It has about 6 or 7 tables to sit. Flavored coffees and variety of teas. No iced coffee in winter months apparently. The bagels. They looked amazing. The blueberry one I got was soft on the inside and a nice crunch to the crust after being toasted. However, it just didn't pop with a lit of flavor for me. Shefs bagels are really delicious, crunchy on the outside and chewy inside. They are the real deal. I wish they were able to distribute to the shoreline but it's worth the thirty minute drive maybe they should partner with CRAZY donut and add bagels to their menu. Just a thought. Last time I went in the woman was annoyed with me for asking for cream cheese on my bagels. Like I had ordered a dozen, and wanted a few of them with cream cheese on it to eat with people in the car and then take the rest home (is this weird??) and she was exasperated and looked annoyed and talked to me in annoyed tone Bc she'd have to do that for me. Update: July 10, 2021 I have since moved from Cheshire to Milford, so I don't get Shef's as much as I like. That said, The Everything Bagel (toasted) with Scallion Cream Cheese is outstanding! Since moving, I've tried other bagel places around Milford (most recently, Popup Bagels, which honestly, don't bother--overhyped, flavorless, and expensive), and nothing compares to Shef's. It's the only bagel place that I actually crave due to its seasoning and light crisp on the exterior of the bagel. My only critique is that bagel supply is still limited, so it's important to get to Shef's early (like before 10) to get the bagel(s) you want. read more

I was introduced to Shef's by my father-in-law about a year ago. The place doesn't look like much on the outside and isn't particularly stylish on the inside, but it's CLEAN - which is more than I can say for the bagel place across the street. The warmth and friendliness of the staff make it a cozy and inviting place to visit for great coffee and DELICIOUS New York style bagels. When busy, the line moves pretty quickly, and the staff is very efficient at doing their job and making you feel welcomed. I live in Hamden but I regularly come here - and go out of my way - for my bagel and cream cheese fix and hazelnut coffee. read more

Drove out of my way to go to Shef's after a coworker recommended it. Arrived at 11:15 am on Sunday morning to find not a single bagel in the place (business hours on Sunday go through 2 pm). They weren't just out of a few flavors...there were NO bagels. The girl behind the counter said it would be 10 minutes until more came out. You didn't realize any earlier that maybe you should make some more bagels?? Bagel place. Sunday morning. Must have a supply of bagels until AT LEAST noon. Is anyone listening? Poor planning at best. It was also very run down inside and out, and about 85 degrees inside. Not the type of place where I wanted to sit around and wait. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. What better way to start a bagel shop review then with a bible verse from the book of Baglesis? I popped up to Cheshire on a rainy Sunday to follow the advice of some friends and try "the best bagel place within 20 miles" and I have to say that I was not disappointed. I arrived and the line was HUGE - about 10 people already there - and that caused me to reduce my order in the hopes I'd be able to leave quicker. Little did I know, Shef's is clearly a bagel efficiency machine who can get through a line of 10 in under 2 minutes! I was in and out with a 1/2 dozen and some cream cheese before I could quote another verse from Baglesis (ok, it's not funny anymore, I acknowledge that. just stick with me here). They fully lived up to their reviews and expectations - delicious northeast style deli bagels with creamy and fluffy "home made" cream cheese - perfect breakfast combo.
