Called around 11am and was able to make an 11:30am appointment on the same day (mind it's a Tuesday but I doubt I would have gotten this lucky if I would have called on the weekend cause everyone does amazing work and they're all probs booked). Trying to get an appointment for my daughter to get a fun color done we sent an appointment request via Yelp and didn't get a response for 4 days so we tried calling and were told we would need to get a call back from D'anna and we waited another 2 days with no call from her before we called back again to set an appointment (at this point I was just wanting to see what was the magic number) and again were unable to get it done. Finally got her hair done and she looks AMAZING!!! Thanks to Regis Hair at Lakewood Mall I called and got the appointment with their color specialist for the next day and done. Update: After my review the owner (Nency) reached out to me to ensure I was happy with the cut. I booked an appointment with her as she was willing to fix it for me at no charge, which was super awesome of her. Although I would have paid for the service, she definitely made up for it. Again my original haircut was not bad but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Nency washed my hair, styled it and cut it evenly. My hair has never looked better in my entire life. I even purchased the leave in conditioner she used which I recommended to my friends and they loved it. In the future I am definitely booking with Nency again and have recommended her to my friends. I almost cancelled the appointment with her but I'm glad I didn't. I truly appreciate the good customer service I received and it means a lot because so many businesses lack it. (NEGATIVE) I referred my friend to this place she has an appointment with another hairstylist Jackie she sent her a picture of how she wanted her hair. My friend went in got her hair done at the end my friend was so upset and unpleased she cried. Jackie tried to "fix" her hair to satisfy her and to be honest it just made it worse. After Jackie tried to make my friend happy and hair was not close to what she requested then the "owner" came in an tried to help. Which made things WORSE... adding a dark dark color to her roots. Hair was completely not what my friend requested (yes, I understand it might take sessions to get what you request) I'll add a pic so you guys can see what my friend requested and what she walked out with.. after the owner helped it was not nearly close to what she was aiming for either. I came here with a hope of getting rid of my fear of haircuts. Turns out this place made me even more scared. I came in here and it was pretty packed, but that didn't stop them from attending me. I ask for someone who knows how to do nice long layers. The lady who I got was nice and seemed she knew what she was doing. We had a pleasant conversation and she seemed to care about my hair. However at the end of my haircut I was left with choppy layers, which I something I detest, and I also got short layers which was not what I asked for at all. I would not come back here. I would give this place ZERO stars if I could. That's how bad the service and quality was. It was terrible from start to finish. Worst experience e.v.e.r. I honestly had to take a Zantac to calm down after leaving this lousy, sorry excuse for a salon. Stylist was D'onna. She was rude, unprofessional, unaccommodating and clearly lacked any knowledge or expertise about coloring/highlights. I came in and brought pictures of exactly the highlights I wanted. I asked her if it was possible given my hair type, coloring, etc. she looked at the photo(s) and said she could do it. Fast forward two hours and my hair is awful. AWFUL. Absolutely no resemblance once so ever to the photos. She could have matched them better if she was blind because my hair looks nothing like the photos I brought in. Then she uses the excuse that my hair is too fragile and would have broken off if she had used bleach to do the highlights. Yeah, ok. Then why not be honest and up front when I come in and ask if it's possible to get the look I want than ruin my hair and make excuses for why you did such a terrible job. I honestly wish I would have refused to pay. I wish I would have raised hell. She had the nerve to demand payment and charge me $65 for this wreck job when she damaged my hair even more with some ugly ass color I never asked for that looks terrible. Trust me, I will spread the word to everyone I know in Downey how crooked and unfair and terrible this place is. And I may even consult my bank about having the transaction reversed. I was just so upset and distraught I couldn't bare to argue and I had to get the hell out of there as fast as I could. Horrible professional service, no skills in highlighting or color work and the absolute worst customer service experience ever. BEWARE. These reviews must be false. As soon as I walked into the door they welcome you and offer you anything to drink etc. Lucy attended me and I was going in to get a haircut and it was a huge thing for me since my hair was always long all my life. She gave me options and she really explained how she was going to cut my hair. I seriously fell in love with the cut, it made me feel even more confident walking out. I have been getting my hair done by Punky since way back in the day, followed her from salon to salon, this is the fourth to be exact! When she moved to New York i was devastated I would have to find another stylist. When she came back she made her home here at Shear Vanity! Although I have seen a couple other stylists I feel terrible I cheated on Punky! This place is nonstop busy! There are about 8 stations and a nice waiting area. All the stylists here are very pleasant and always trying to accommodate their customers which I absolutely love. They each set their own prices. They even have a threading/waxing station. My girl Punky is absolutely amazing!! She's friendly and very professional. From color to cut she knows her stuff! I'm no virgin to the hair coloring, I've done it all, from solids colors, highlights, lowlights, you name it I've done it. Today I came in for a conditioning treatment with a cut/style and I was treated like a queen! I told Punky what I liked and she did her magic. I love my hair, it's so soft, healthy and looking cute! This review is for the salon not the stylist. I made an appointment with Lucy, this was my first time going there. I had to take my daughter with me because I urgently needed to get my hair cut for an event. I have no family in the area so I have no one to watch my daughter. I took her with me and she was going to sit in her stroller playing with her toys like she always does whenever I go to other salons for haircuts. When I arrived I was informed they have a strict no child policy. Even though this was never mentioned or posted anywhere. Lucy tried to talk to a lady there, who I'm assuming might be the owner, to see if they could be flexible just this one time since no one mentioned the policy to me. The lady said no and said to come back when I had someone to watch my daughter. I explained I had no one and I needed the haircut urgently and wouldn't have time to reschedule. She said no. So I walked out. I understand they have the right to have their policies and I'm sure they have their reasons. However, since I was not informed before hand she could have been more flexible. So much for customer service. I ended up wasting my whole day running all over Downey trying to find a salon that would accept a walk in. Luckily I found one that accepted walk ins and had no issue with kids. My daughter sat quietly in her stroller the whole time. By the way here on Yelp it says "kids ok". They might want to update that. They said the only kids allowed are teens. read more

My hair has been with box dye for a whole year so I decided I needed help it was like 4 colors all in patches. Went in wanting to get. balayage when already previously highlighted hair from another salon. they said my hair is not in any condition to get it any lighter because it was so damaged from bleached highlights because the other salon did it knowing how bad my hair is already! so Jacky was the hairstylist and she did not recommend doing it and even got a second opinion by Esther who also agreed. I already knew the condition of my hair so I am thankful for these professionals! They even said If I still wanted to do it I had to sign a waiver. So I said nvm just do whats best for my hair. I walked in, and I was greeted right away. They always referred to me by name, I did not feel like just another customer. They offer refreshments and magazines while you wait. After waiting maybe like 5 minutes at the max, I was attended by Jennifer. Before getting my hair done, I told her I would give her creative freedom over my hair, as long as most of my split ends were gone. She delivered, and exceeded my expectations! Alright, I'm pretty upset. This is my first time at this salon and I was paired with a young guy, though I don't remember his name. I have an undercut with my hair so I asked if he could buzz my hair to clean it up. He was so reluctant and hesitant and tried to save face by saying that he only knows how to do "women's styles and color". Annoying, to be sure, but not the biggest deal, and if he only knows women's styles then I guess it makes sense he wouldn't know how to do a buzz. He then turns around and asks his co-worker to stop by and she essentially gave him a crash course right in the middle of my appointment. She ended up having to do all of his work for him, with him asking questions as if he was a brand new employee. It was taking entirely too long, and I was beginning to run out of patience. She eventually finished up a part and asked if he could take it from there, and he hesitated saying "Oh can you help me with her bangs too?" I was practically losing it at this point. How in the hell does Mr. Women's Styles Only not know how to do bangs? What kind of styles is he doing??? All I wanted was flat cut across bangs and it somehow turned into an ordeal with them asking me for fucking REFRENCE PICTURES lmao. So of course she ended up doing the bangs for him as well, and as she was doing them she deliberately said "Be sure to cut a little bit longer than what they ask for because when it dries it gets shorter." She then proceeds to cut my bangs too short. Now, I'm not a hair stylist, but every stylist I've ever been to says to cut bangs when they're dry to specifically avoid this problem, and this lady, directly after cutting my bangs too short, is trying to argue with me saying stuff like "Oh, well you CAN do it that way, sure, but it's not REQUIRED or anything!" I was seething. Now I look like I have a god damned bowl cut. After she left he started to trim my actual hair and it was so ridiculously slow and as if he was timid to do it. I was so fed up that I just asked him to finish cutting and to not to bother styling my hair. I was fucking donezo. Absolutely not worth any amount of money, let alone what I had paid. MALE REVIEW. I have thick curly hair that is capable of forming into a dorky Jew-fro if not tamed. For most of my adult life, I would go to Floyd's Barbershops because their hair stylists were the only ones that came close to knowing how to do my hair. Then one day, my aunt recommended I see Seth at Shear Vanity. I took her advice. By the time Seth was done with my hair, I decided I wasn't getting my hair cut anywhere else but Shear Vanity ever again. Seth does an amazing job, he takes his time to get the hair cut to look just right, and he's able to give me hair styles that other barbers said weren't possible because I have curly hair. Usually when I walk out of a barbershop, my hair cut looks ehhh, and I know it'll take two weeks before it grows into something I'll like. Not with Seth. I walk out of Shear Vanity with the exact hair style I hoped. If I was an actor, I'd feel "camera ready." Seth now cuts my hair, as well as my aunt's, mom's, and sister's. All the people who work at Shear Vanity seem like pros. By just glancing at how they're treating other people's hair, I can tell they all know their stuff. The place has a unique atmosphere: it has the classiness of a Beverly Hills salon (they'll bring you water/soda in a glass!), but it isn't stuck up.
