Last time I was down south, he had to do a color correction on my hair from work someone else did, and Lance did an excellent job returning my hair to the color he created just for me years ago. My girl's been coming to see him religiously for a few years. She usually comes a few times a year. I'd have to compliment his haircuts and the coloring. My girl's hair looks great every time he does her hair. I usually buy a gift certificate from here for her to redeem. It works out great. I'd say he's pretty affordable. Its sooo hard to find a stylist (and stick with them) who knows exactly what you want and consistently takes care of me. First off: Cash or check only!! No Credit Cards! Moving on: I really hate to be the bird crap on the windshield of a perfectly polished car, but my currently haircut is making me feel like a 90's house-mom. (Which is a problem because I'm actually 22.) This place doesn't have a lot of young clientele. Everyone inside was at LEAST middle aged. This should have been an indication for me to clutch my purse and run. But I walked in anyway. I told the lady I wanted side-swept bangs, and lots of layers to give my hair more volume--nothing out of the ordinary. She was really nice and super sweet. We just chatted idly while she snipped away. I told her I wanted to keep the length and she did a good job of listening to that. But when she first finished, my hair was too one-dimensional. I asked for more choppy layers, just to add an extra oomph. Perfectly happy to acquiesce, she cut again. The right side was fine, and then she cut an entire, straight-line chunk of hair off my left side. Eep. So then, perhaps it was absolutely stupid of me to ask her to make my ends look a little more natural and less straight cut. (Spoiler alert: It was stupid. It was very stupid.) She must have misunderstood and just cut the bottom straight and by that point I was so terrified of her touching my hair anymore that I just hopped off the seat and paid. I feel bad giving this place such a low rating--everyone was nice, service was good, etc. But there is no forgiving a bad haircut. read more

Rick is the best and that is an understatement. I have literally grown up with Rick cutting my hair. No matter where I have lived, I can't go anywhere else. I will schedule (and have scheduled) trips home to Downey in correlation with my haircut needs. Quality is key. If you don't believe me, ask about the countless awards he's received and the hair shows he's attended. Short, long, layers and whatever I've wanted, he has been able to provide the exact look I envisioned even if I didn't even know how to explain it. Let's be real, people often think I've gotten my haircut and styled at a fancy salon in Beverly Hills. Rick is amazing. You are guaranteed a great cut. And hey, the company is always welcomed. He's hilarious and can talk about anything and everything. Rick is worth the trip to Downey. I promise! (And yes, I'm aware it only shows I've only had like one check in here. I normally just read the reviews other yelpers leave and I've never felt the need to write one myself until.......I went to Gallagher's and had an appt with LANCE! OMG where do I begin? I went in with brassy/orange hair with barely noticeable blonde highlights (that some overly priced salon in norwalk did) and came out looking and feeling like a million bucks. I showed Lance a picture of what I wanted and was worried that my hair was too processed to acheive that look but what do u know? He did it!! I got EXACTLY what I wanted, way more blonde and less brass. I'm so happy with my new color. He also cut my hair and worked magic with the scissors. His assistant I think her name was Liz was very helpful, nice and easy to talk to. I've been to a lot of hair salons in the past usually i just go once or twice because they make you feel like your the outsider and don't give you a chance to join "their inner circle". Well I'm done with those stuck-up salons. Gallagher's is my new home. Everyone is super friendly and easy to talk to, they make you feel welcomed. Their prices are pretty reasonable as well. Lance now has a loyal customer for life. Thanks to Yelp, I found Gallagher's Hair Salon and am SO HAPPY that I did. It is one of the best salons I ever had the pleasure of getting my hair cut in (and because I move a lot, I've been to quite a few). The next time I'm in town and need a haircut, I will not hesitate to come here at all! As for my experience with the salon: each time I called the salon (once to set-up the appointment, again to move to a later time, again to say that I was running a little late, and finally again to help find directions because my friend and I got lost on our way there), the person who picked up the phone (whether it was Lance or another person) were really nice and friendly. When I entered the Salon, I thought it was really nice--two flat screen TVs; great, not too bright, lighting; and the chairs were comfy (the chairs you sit in to get your hair washed even have a foot/leg rest!). Lance sat me in a chair to discuss my hair--he looked at it after I pulled it out of a bun and I told him that I really only wanted a trim, wanted to keep as much of the length as possible. I also told him that I wanted to put in sideswept bangs and layers, just like I usually do, but I wanted to make sure that he put enough hair into the bang part and didn't cut too many layers into my hair (I don't know why, but stylists see that I'm Asian, I ask for long layers in the *front* only, and they end up cutting lots of layers into my hair). He said that I gave him great instructions to work with and sent me off to get my hair washed by one of his assistants. As I said before, the chair used for shampooing is really comfortable. As for the actual shampoo--she washed my hair but didn't do a scalp massage. It didn't bother me, but I'm used to the stylists doing a scalp massage when they wash my hair. Also, I didn't love the smell of the shampoo--I can't name the smell, I just knew that I didn't like it. Oh well, I use perfume anyway :) Once I was seated in Lance's chair, he started cutting my hair and making small talk with me. He's a very friendly guy. I don't usually like talking to the person cutting my hair because I always feel so awkward (and don't know what to talk about) but Lance was cool. He took less time to cut my hair than I had anticipated and started blow drying my hair with the help of his assistant. When I looked in the mirror after he was done, I was very happy with the results. He did exactly what I asked for and managed to make it look better than I expected! Lance is a really efficient hair stylist--he doesn't need a lot of time to do quality work. Most of all, I want to talk about my bangs. When Lance started cutting them, I thought to myself, "Oh no! It's too short! Oh well, it's just hair... It'll grow back soon enough." When I actually saw them, I was pleasantly surprised at how great my bangs looked. I absolutely LOVED them. They are the best bangs I've ever had! I always thought I had to have long sideswept bangs to look nice (think, Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy emo-hair --I loved him :p) but I was wrong. I'm definitely going to keep this kind of bang and I have Lance to thank for this great discovery! When all was said and done, I was in and out of the salon in about 30 minutes--the quickest time ever! The price was REALLY great--much cheaper than I'm used to paying, which is why I was really happy to tip Lance and his assistant. If you're thinking about whether or not to come to this salon, don't think. Just go! Lance is great and so is his staff. If you don't know what you want to do with your hair, I'm sure Lance will be able to help you figure out a new style. I mean, I'm used to having the stylist ask me how long I want my sideswept bang to be, but Lance didn't ask. He just did. And it was great! If that's not the mark of a truly great stylist, I don't know what is. read more

Needed a new hair stylist close to my work and discovered them through their 4 visit spa promotion package. It's hard enough finding a great hair stylist with talent and fair prices, but it's harder to find someone that is cool to talk to and have a pleasant experience with. With that being said, I generally do not go to spas or go to salons and prefer your simple haircut store or barber. Since, I have this spa promotion, I decided to give it a try (even the facials, massages and therapy sessions). I was a little nervous going to a new hair stylist, named ANGEL. Angel knows what i mean when i say this, "I wasn't sure what to expect from a guy named Angel that was going to take care of me, as I thought this session was going to be my full body massage or facial appointment. The receptionist told me Angel "will take good care of me!" As it turns out, Angel is my hair stylist, not my masseuse or facial person. ANGEL IS AWESOME! He does great work on my hair and knows what I want done with my hair! We clicked right away as we are both not shy talkers and I enjoy the experience and conversation! I've been there twice now and I always look forward to getting my hair styled by Angel! I have yet to schedule my facial or massage sessions, but I will soon. I like this place! My sister introduced me to Lance about 8 years ago. Haven't turned to another stylist since! Why change what you love! I usually change my color for the fall and summer. I go in with ideas and we discuss it before he begins. He always gets it right, cut, style, and the color, perfection! I've received many compliments on my hair and have sent friends and coworkers to Lance. The staff is always friendly and the salon very tidy and clean. More importantly for those who hate wasting their time and have a million things to do, like myself, the wait is never long! Rick is talented, personable,and most importantly, a professional stylist. He is very accomplished as he has won several national hair cutting championships! He provides individualized professional service to each of his clients. I am most impressed at the range of Rick's clientele. He is able to provide a first cut, a style for a special occasion, or simply maintain your well groomed look. My husband had been going to his father's barber for years. At my suggestion, he went to Rick for a updated cut and has never looked back . Our three, now adult children grew up as his clients and still choose to go to him. One son is conservative with his cut. Rick's got it covered. Our second son likes to change it up each time. Rick makes it happen. As I was passing thru Downey I decided to stop & grab a hair cut, looked up local businesses, found Gallagher's on here, phoned & with in 20 minutes they had a available spot for me, Tim was the stylist I do have to say that I was very impressed by the welcome of the staff when I entered the salon, Tim took the time to explain the ways HE does cuts then proceeded to ask how I would like my hair done, after listening he made a suggestion & I proceeded to take his advise, all in all it turned out to be a great choice. I will definitely will make the drive in the future when in town to get my hair cut here. As I read these other reviews, all I see is "Lance, Lance, Lance!" Well, yeah!! Lance is the best. Lance has been cutting & styling my hair for over 25 years. We've been through so much together - My high school days, College, His headbanging 80's hair, my Big 80's hair, etc. and we're still going strong. The salon is always clean, his asst Liz is always on top of things and the receptionist Sherri is always gracious and welcoming. If you need an appt with Lance make sure you call at least a week in advance & talk to Sherri. She knows Lance and makes his schedule work! The salon has an upbeat atmosphere and the employees actually enjoy working there. You will be greeted with a smile when you walk in the door. Whether it's your first visit, or you're a regular, you'll always be treated as if you've been going there for years. Trust Lance to make suggestions on cut, style, color, etc. He knows what he's doing. Years ago I went with some highlights and Lance did an amazing job. I've seen him work miracles on clients that have walked in with 'Classy' Orange hair or extremely damaged hair that looked like it was shaped by a week wacker! He does such an amazing job that one would think he has some sort of magic wand to make it all work. Nope, I've checked! There is no wizardry involved, he's just that talented! Thank You Lance! I came in needing help, magic and a miracle, I had received a horrible haircut that I couldn't deal with one more day. I went on yelp looking for a 5 star salon and decided on Lance at Gallagher's. How lucky was I to find out he was able to see me the same day! I'll admit I was embarrassed to walk into the salon with my crappy haircut and yet I was greeted with a friendly smile and handshake. After combing through my hair he introduced me to Liz, his assistant, who walked me back and shampooed my hair. She was empathetic without being judgey.
