I live in Malden and compared to the Stop and Shop in Malden this place is heaven. It does however have drawbacks. I agree with one reviewer the staff is very nosy. There have been two times I have been questioned why I am buying something!!! Or why I am back in the same aisle. Once I was buying Rubbing Alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide for a first aid kit and the cashier held up the items and was like "Is someone hurt?" and he said it in a mocking way it was weird. I looked at him like " "yeah stfu and scan my items" They are a bit pricey at times and sometimes are out of the stuff I need. All in all though I would go to Shaws over stop and shop any day of the week. I don't have many options. There is nothing overly bad about this place and I get a 5$ off my order coupon all the time. If there were a way to give this no stars I would. Every single time I step into it I say to my husband, "Please don't ever let me go in here again." It releases a sort of rather unreasonable vitriol. Melrose has no other option for a place to pop-in for a quick necessity. This is the only game in town (quite literally). The prices are OUTRAGEOUS, the store itself is filthy, and I don't think I've ever seen a staff member walking around to help customers. At most, there are 3 checkout lines open at once and every single time I have used the self-checkout I have run into some sort of issue. I'm also always appalled at how many bags the cashiers use. Thank GOD a Whole Foods is opening in Melrose. It will be worth the year wait. read more

Watch the register closely or look at your bill because something is ALWAYS rung up wrong or mis-marked. The service desk is happy to fix the problem but its a pain. The produce is not always good. read more

Very expesive! And does not have a reward card like stop and shop. I feel its worth it to drive to Saugus or Malden to a Stop and Shop for a better price on better stuff. That being said, if you live in Melrose this place works for a quick run. read more

Lovely employees. This is a smaller Shaw's and lines get busy but they have all the essentials. Prices are high (compared to Market Basket) but it's good for all the essentials in a pinch. Cashiers are always talking to some other employee not paying attn. to what they are doing. One early morning cashier who wears gloves is "very rude" every time and she is not a young kid she should have life experience alone to be polite. linda a morning manager is terrible (my wife has same bad experiences with her as well) as a manager when a customer asks a question you do not just dismiss them. I actually just created a yelp account and am a first time reviewer because I am so frustrated with this store. Closest grocery to my house but the number of times I have walked out of there saying "I'm never going back there again" is staggering. The produce is terrible, the staff cares much more about talking to each other than helping customers, and it is always kind of just dirty in there, but I always end up going back because it is so convenient. Not anymore. Tonight they crossed the line. I wanted to make tamales tomorrow so went to Whole Foods up the street because I thought they would be more likely to have corn husks. They normally do but were sold out. No corn husks, no tamales. It's an essential Ingredient. So I call Shaw's and ask them if they have them and the woman who answered the phone said yes! I was super excited, so I bought the pork butt and all the other things I need for tamales at Whole Foods then swung by Shaw's to get the corn husks. Not only do they not have them, they don't even carry them. The idiot who answered the phone never even bothered to check. So now I am out $30 on stuff for tamales I can't make because the moron who answered the phone couldn't be bothered to do her job and look up whether or not they carry a specific item (or connect me to someone who can). This is so emblematic of the customer service there that it is almost laughable! In fact it is laughable because hubby saved New Years by going to super88 where they had plenty of corn husks. Long story... but abridged version is go to Whole Foods, or super88 or drive to reading and go to market basket. Just don't go to Shaw's. They do not deserve your business. read more

I really like Melrose Shaws. It's convenient. Their prices are becoming more competitive. The staff are really nice people who always offer help and they have been so good to me over the years. Once I ran in in a snowstorm, the lines were long of course and the manager who knew me as a regular let me leave with a free loaf of bread. Another time when I had just gotten laid off and mentioned it to a supervisor who was running the cash register, she gave me a 5 dollar coupon to apply to my order right on the spot. I see the effort that's going in to make this a great little store for Melrose. I really don't care to walk around in a warehouse type grocery store. Thanks for all you do Melrose Shaws! p.s.To the customer who said "everytime she shops at Shaw's she gets overcharged, no kidding". Well guess what? It's not Shaw's fault, it's really yours. I have started shopping this store and it is the best choice in the area.i save a lot of money by using my rewards card and coupons too. The prices are starting to come down to compete with the competition. The staff is extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. This store is not as big as some other supermarkets but still carries everything I need. With its convenient location right downtown, this makes for a very easy shop. read more

The last few months I have noticed Shaws in Melrose have really stepped up their game. Produce looks great, more choices and healthier options at a good price. I bought fish today and noticed the display of fish and now meat is larger and it is a lovely presentation. I am old enough to remember how instead of Shaws there was a non-corporate owned Ciritanis store which was awesome in a small community like Melrose (yes, I am a Melrose resident) Every time I venture into Shaws here it is a disaster. Everything is overpriced (even compared to Stop and Shop which I though for a long time was quite expensive). On several occasions I was "helped" by Marisa who lectured me on how I misread price tags (they do practice deceptive advertisement on occasion by placing tags in a way that customer thinks he/she buys at one price just to be "pleasantly" surprised at the cash register) and I should do this and place an item here instead of there. Even when I press button"need help" Marisa, who stands 2 feet away, turns around not to see a customer who needs help and starts walking away. What had happened to "exceptional customer service" here in America? Is that just me or other people also see how our standards, values and beliefs are declining right before our eyes! read more

The worse Shaws/Star Market that I have been to in the greater Boston area. The meat manager Jack is rude, loud, and obnoxious and the people who answer the phones treat you like there is something wrong with you if you complain despite all the other terrible reviews this location has not only within Yelp but on Foursquare, Google reviews and elsewhere. You can never find parking there and often times the fruit and vegetables have gone bad but they put them on the shelves anyways. read more

This is the worst Shaws I have been to in the Boston area. I just moved to Malden and this is the only grocery store close to me besides Stop and Shop (which I haves always considered to be a sub-par grocery store). I have never, and I mean never, found good produce at this Shaws. The produce always appears to be in low stock and I have gone on various days and times, and what produce they do have is always moldy or almost rotten. I have started shopping at Stop and Shop because I can find marginally better produce there. read more

Spend $180 every 10-12 days here but we're done with this location. We bag our own groceries, entirely, 9 times out of 10. Go to Stop n Shop on rte 1. Worth it for what you save on groceries and they carry Boar's Head deli meats. Liquor store right next door with a good selection too. Can't be overpriced, understaffed and not have products people want. P.S. Parking is a nightmare! read more

While Melrose is a nice clean town, this grocery store is not. It often has a dirty smell like you would find in an extreme discount marketing, the produce doesnt last, and all the while paying higher prices than any other market. I try not to visit this store due to these reasons, however went there last night because it was closer but that was my very last time. On top of everything, the lady at the register REFUSED to swipe a 'discount card' for me - which would have enabled me to get my total slightly lower and closer to prices seen at every other marketing. Its okay though... I will never step into a Shaw again, even if it is out of convenience! read more
