The food looked good so we bought chicken parm with ziti to have in our hotel room. It was the worst I have ever had - the pasta was overcooked and the chicken was dry and looked and tasted like a piece of turkey that they breaded. It it was a restaurant I would have returned the dish. Would never eat anything like that from there again. We bought cookies - a few we tried tasted identical and only the toppings and shapes were changed. Food is very good. Pricey but good. That is if you can get any service. The people who work there are horrendous. I stood at the Deli counter more than five minutes - absolutely no one in front of me getting served - I waited patiently while the server looked at me and continued to talk on his phone. The other gentleman cutting cold cuts turned a few times, looked at me and continued cutting cold cuts. Person at the sandwich counter pretty much had the same attitude. being A customer for many years, I placed my first catering order recentl. I ordered a variety of sandwiches and an Antipasto salad. The sandwiches were delicious and came with sides of all different condiments. The bread was super fresh and were gobbled up quickly!! The small antipasto was big! One of the best Italian American shops around everything is always fresh!! We always get our cold cuts, cheeses etc there. My family has been going there since I was a child in the north end Saugus definitely kept up the standard. Try the Pizza. They just started making it. Uber Eats and Door dash orders come before the patrons standing in line. The pre-made selections are as flavorless and bland as it comes. Their meatballs are terrible. Bought $175 worth of food. 3 packages of burgers had a use by date that was the next day. 1 package of Greek pasta salad had a use by date that was 1 day out and the other package had a use by date that was 2 days out. I went in to get my cutlets that are ALWAYS thin, clean and perfect. I got 6 pnds and I NEVER have seen them like this. Thick. Uneven, lousy trim and the sizes were all over the place. Overpriced and overrated. The customer service is poor. Due to social distancing I wasn't sure if a couple was in line or not. They were standing 100 feet away from counter so I asked and they were in line and got behind them. Then the couple proceeded to allow this elderly man go first which was nice. Then there was a long line forming at around 6p when it's rush hour and people are grabbing quick meals for dinner. The lady at the register took 10 minutes to check out one person and there were 10 people in line behind me. While Saugus isn't exactly my destination of choice, I had been working in the area for a bit and made Pace & Sons my destination of choice on a near daily basis. The place itself is one you cannot miss (especially if you have a GPS) and is right off of route 1, on Main Street. It's absolutely gigantic and features all kinds of counters: one for pastries, one for hot lunches, one for meats and another for deli food as well. Each is packed with imported goods from the old country and others feature goods that were produced on the spot. They have all kinds of cookies, oils, pastas, meats, you name it. While I have not purchased anything other than my lunch there, I can tell you that I looked forward to eat there, especially since my wraps featured fresh, tasty ingredients. Imagine a tomato, mozzarella and prosciutto wrap with some of the freshest ingredients around... that's basically what I had. Except that I added sun-dried tomatoes in there for an extra kick of flavor that hit a homerun on every bite. Just writing about it right now makes me salivate. Another great thing about the place is that they have an eating area, featuring both a long counter and some tables and seats. There's even a TV in the back with some news on which is another nice feature for them to have. Oh and their private parking lot is absolutely huge which is another plus in my book. So whether you're in the area and want to get some breakfast or lunch, or buy some steak tips, some pasta or some cookies, this should be your go-to place in the area. This could very well be the best Italian shop in the Boston-area aside from anything you'd find in the North End. Speaking of which, they also have a shop in the North End. read more
