I live off Astoria Ditmars and every time I passed this restaurant I would pause and then continue on thinking that the logo and decor implied fast food shwarma. Months I resisted. Why??? Why did I wait so long?? Picture this: 10:50pm on a Tuesday night. I'm tired. I'm hungry. I need something to bring home and eat because I am also lazy. I see the loud orange and yellow sign and say... fine. I'm so tired I won't need to finish eating everything anyway. I got the lamb and beef pita. With tax $7.08 I watched it get put together. Everything looked so fresh! And holy huge amount of food stuffed in that pita, Batman. The cashier bagged, winked and threw in a rice pudding for free. My plan was to wait until I got home to eat. But it smelled so good. I couldn't wait. One bite, I said. I'll just take one bite. 10 blocks and two Avenues later and that pita was GONE. The beef and lamb were delicious. The seasonings were so deep in the meat. Awesome. Fresh veggies. Awesome. Hot sauce. YASSSSS. The never judge a book by its cover suggestion applied tonight. This was some of the best I've ever had. I'd been avoiding this place due to mixed reviews, but a hummus emergency finally caused me to try, and dislike, this place. Food: Got the hummus and babaganoush. Neither tasted remotely yummy. The hummus texture was fine but taste was strange. The babaganoush was too creamy and had an odd sweet flavor with very little eggplant. The pita was preheated and sitting out, so was cold and soggy. I had to bring it home and throw it in a pan to make it more edible. Service: I got take out. The service was friendly but inefficient. I had only ordered dips that required no cooking, but rather than scooping my food while the orders ahead of me were cooking, they were working thru one order at a time. Not only did that cause unnecessary delay, it was just infuriatingly inefficient to my hangry mind. Oh and I ordered two dips and they gave me only one spoon! Makes no sense. I ordered a lamb and beef shawarma pita and a kofta pita, hummus and pita, falafel, and snapple - FOR DELIVERY. Through Seamless, it says that delivery time is 30-45 minutes. After waiting for 45 minutes, I called the restaurant only to have them tell me that the delivery guy just left. It then took another 25 minutes to receive my food. The food was cold, soggy, and unflavorful. My falafel was soggy, the pita was soggy, and the meat cold and unflavorful. This review is based on DELIVERY. I ordered through the yelp app which runs with EAT24. Placed the order and added the tip, all seems good right? After a hour and change of waiting I decided to contact the restaurant (no answer), later then I reached out to EAT24. At this point, my stomach is eating itself from hunger. The representative told me they were out for delivery and then few minutes later told me the deliver guy would not deliver to my area because it was too far out of their delivery area, understandable if a place told you in advance. Never received a courtesy call or a cancellation they could not deliver to my area; in that hour and change I could have ordered from a different place or gone to the supermarket to whip something up. I always tell my friends the secret to great kabob is keeping it juicy. I've had this place 4 times the past year due to necessity more than the food. I tend to stay away from grilled Egyptian food because they always overcook the meat. This visit proves just that, a sad over cooked mixed grill with dry kofta and semi burnt chicken kabob where I burned 16.99. The beef kabob part of the mixed grill saved this otherwise one star review. Hope one day Egyptians can cook meat without burning the outside... But they have great items here too! The can of soda by the name of Pepsi and another named San pelegrino Aranciata was to die for! They have improved since opening. We tried the falafel and the shawarma sandwiches-- the falafels are good but the shawarma is just not there for me. My husband and I usually get our falafel sandwhiches and share fries. The latter are pretty good and its cute that they sprinkle some herbs on top. Their baba ghanoush is sadly a miss for me. It was too watery and too much mayo. On the bright side, their service is good and very friendly! Although they need to be more in-tune with Grubhub pick up orders. Service: After a ridiculously long time ordering on the phone bc I had to keep repeating myself, he said it would be an estimated hour before delivery. Hour?! After some push back he finally agreed to a half hour. (So he can just change it?). Once delivered, left out of the order was: my drink, the hot sauce, any utensils, and all the sauces for one of the orders. I mean... The chicken shawarma pitas at this place are amazing! They have a perfect way of layering all the ingredients so you always get bites of the crunchy lettuce and picked veggies. The pita is also huge and only $6! I'm always stuffed after one but rarely do I want to stop eating half way through. :-) They put a nice amount of white sauce, layered again, and although pita isn't homemade or anything, it's fresh/soft and thin so not too bread heavy. I get the hot sauce on the side and it is very tasty although I go easy on it as it is quite hot. The guys in here are also always friendly and the service is quick.
