The filling of rice and ground beef is soft. The eggplant is much softer. They are cooked in a tomato sauce and served with a cool creamy yogurt. Babaganouj: This mezze is a roasted eggplant dip. The eggplant is mashed with tahini and lemon juice for a smoky and slightly bitter flavor. It's smooth, creamy, and a bit chunky. Parking: There's a little lot to the side. We ordered the two-person combo, which was about $95 per person and included all the appetizers they recommended, plus two skewers each, with additional upcharges for certain protein choices like beef. On top of that, we each got drinks that were around $15-20 each, and after parking and a 20% tip, the final bill came out to roughly $350 for two people. I normally don't focus too much on pricing at restaurants, but the final bill on this one had me do a double glance. I get that you're in the LA Arts District and paying for the location and ambiance, but the pricing seems a bit excessive. Overall, it was a good experience, and I'd honestly love to come back and bring friends because the restaurant itself is nice and the food was genuinely good. At the same time, I do feel like I can get similar quality food in a similar comfortable environment for a fraction of the price.

Plan ahead me called in the following for delivery last Sunday. So, what could possibly be ordered, remain fresh 24-hours later? I chose vegan/vegetarian sides/appetizers: Baba Ganoush - I've made it but Shamshiri Grill's is SO much better; creamy, perfectly seasoned. Hummus - Again, can DIY but why? Shamshiri Grill's is yum, pure yum, protein packed. Falafel - Balanced ingredients and frying technique is key. Came with a portion of tahini (had some in the pantry just in case). Should have ordered more falafel. Never gonna make this at home again, ever! Tabuli - Shamshiri Grill's includes the perfect hint of mint along with the parsley and tomatoes. Panir o' Shabiz - All aforementioned are wonderful BUT this, well this, is what I could eat and nothing else. Fresh basil, mint, tomatoes, radishes, sweet white onion, scallions, walnuts, feta, lemon, butter to be consumed with abundant pita bread and sumac provided. My kinda "sandwich"! This, Panir o'Shabiz was the only order I immediately deconstructed to avoid compromising the herbs' and veggies' freshness. Carefully wrapping them in kitchen towels, refrigerated then re-plated and back in the fridge prior to leaving for work after setting the table. Oh, isolated the feta and walnuts too. Everyone at last Monday's gathering is an omnivore with heavy plant-based dietary leanings. BUT, occasionally we stray hence a side each of chicken and beef koobideh (ground seasoned meat cooked kabob style) and grilled tomato, onion, red bell pepper garnish (also available as a side). I divvied each koobideh into bite sized pieces to be shared among three guests. REALLY good, make those tiny bites, REALLY, REALLY good. Everyone arrived, me too, on time to nosh on the veggie offerings as the koobideh and falafel gently warmed in the oven on low. Plenty of convo, cleared the table for tea and dried dates... Shamshiri Grill you and all the staff from chefs to delivery made my gathering a success, many thanks. Note: No recent pics (cameras/phones not allowed at our group's table) but 2017/18 ones reflect what we ate.

The owners and staff have always been kind, welcoming, and consistent throughout the years. You can truly feel the heart behind this place. When we arrived the host was friendly and walked us over to our table with a smile. Then our server came over and let me tell she was the most happy and friendliest server that we have ever experienced in our dining experience. Marlene approached us with "happy Friday" and spark up a quick conversation of why we were visiting. She made us feel welcomed immediately and excited about being there. We had a few questions about the menu and she was able to guide us through the menu with ease. She recommended things we hadn't tried before and for every dish that came out she would tell us the best way the chef would like us to enjoy them. I mean the service was impeccable. She was super sweet with my mother who is a bit older and sometimes is indecisive with food and drinks. But she was so patient with her and sweet to help her choose a wine and items on the menu that she end up loving. My mother couldn't stop talking about her on the way home. Every dish that came to our table was amazing and the drinks were super tasty. Hummus, crudo, prawns and dorado are a must. At the end we trusted her to choose dessert for us. The cashew bar and donuts nuts were the best way to end our dining experience. Overall, if you are looking for great food and amazing service this is the place to come.

Unfortunately, I will not be coming back. My family and I went here one afternoon and as we sat down, the attendant from the restaurant told us that the specific table we were sitting on wasn't part of the restaurant and we were not going to be served if we sat there in a very rude tone. We went ahead and moved. Then we went up to the cashier to order our food and the two people that were there were busy talking to each other in farsi about a customer that just came and didn't tip along with some very vulgar language. Then as we were ordering, we told them it was our first time and we got no smile or anything, very still faces like whatever. We ordered two Koobideh wraps and a few other things. It was very uncomfortable. The Cashier didn't even speak to us. As we sat down we were "served" after we HAD to ask if we get bread and onions and water because we saw that they were taking those things to other tables. The Koobideh wrap tasted like Rubber and you could barely hold it together as it was drenched with the sauce and all soggy. Even my 1 year old wouldn't eat it. We had to open up the sandwiches and eat them with a fork. It was not a good experience. Tip for the owner: You should probably remind your employees that some of your customers are Persian and they will understand them talking shit.

We had the beef soltani, lamb shank, and specialty chicken, and they did not disappoint, full of flavor and spice that I've come to love in Persian Cuisine. The variety of rice mixes are a cut above and drew praise from 4 of our party who have never had Persian food before. But the highlight of our time was our server, Maral! She was bursting with energy, an easy laugh, and a really welcoming tone than made me feel welcomed as an old friend-- not the polite tone of a total stranger. Her joviality, kindness, and wit-- combined with the intimate ambiance of the dining room-- haa cemented Toranj as my go-to for Persian food. Not only great food, but great people.

Honestly, I didn't even want to write this review, but after spending a couple of hours thinking…read moreabout it, I felt like I had to. To those writing all the good reviews, I genuinely have one question: have you actually had good Persian food before? Have you ever been to Raffi's? We drove all the way from Orange County because someone recommended this place. We usually just go to Raffi's, but I thought, "let's give this place a shot." Unfortunately, that was a mistake. First, I want to be clear: the staff were great, friendly and attentive. This review has nothing to do with them. It's strictly about the food. 3 Stew Tahdig ($17): The tahdig was extremely thick and hard. Even with the stew on top, it was basically inedible. Mast-o-Moosir (Shallot Yogurt): Served in a very small portion and was extremely watery. You could clearly taste raw shallots instead of a smooth blend. This dish should be made with thick yogurt (mast-e chekideh), not something runny. Main Courses: * Soltani ($39) * Naderi Soltani ($42) Honestly, we couldn't even tell the difference between the two, they seemed identical. We asked for well-done, but everything came medium or even undercooked. The barg kebab (filet mignon) was the worst part, it was tough, rubbery, and almost impossible to cut. It genuinely felt like chewing plastic. Not sure what kind of meat was used, but it definitely wasn't good quality. Salad Issue: The server asked which salad we wanted and mentioned Shirazi, Greek, etc. I chose Greek. When the bill came, we were charged an extra $2 for it, which was never mentioned. That should have been clearly communicated. Also, the bowl the salad was served in was chipped and broken in multiple spots--not a great presentation at all. Rice: The rice was poorly cooked and had barely any saffron (maybe 5% at most). Even another table nearby complained about the rice. Drink - Sekanjebin ($10): This is supposed to be a traditional Persian drink, but this tasted like a mix of cheap syrup. It did not resemble authentic sekanjebin at all. Appetizer - Marinated Olives (Zeytoon Parvardeh): The olives were unusually large and overpowering. This dish should be balanced, you're supposed to taste the walnut, pomegranate, and herbs, not just big olives. At this point, it made sense why the restaurant was almost empty on a Sunday lunchtime, maybe 4-5 tables total. To be completely honest, the food upset our stomachs to the point where we had to take Pepto-Bismol afterward. Overall, the food quality was very disappointing, and we will not be coming back. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic or well-made Persian food. Again, no issues with the staff, they were great. The problem is entirely with the food.
