Time for some sharp criticism. Sharp Tea is a new bubble tea shop in the Weller Court shopping plaza, a multi-level outdoor mall of sorts full of Japanese restaurants and certain other concepts. Makes sense, considering that it's in Little Tokyo. My friend and I had just had dinner elsewhere, and she'd actually recommended a location of chain which would be more regularly accessible to me without a long drive to Downtown LA. Sharply, I pointed out that she'd recently been raving about this standalone business and suggested that we try them instead. Parking may be available elsewhere within walkable distance, but the best parking is likely the underground parking garage right below Weller Court, which can be accessed via 2nd St. Be forewarned as I wasn't: parking in this garage costs $2 per 15 minutes, and some businesses (including this one so far) don't validate at all. Aside from that kerfuffle, which I am not factoring into the rating, I wasn't very thrilled by my Ceylon Milk Tea ($5.00), which was actually a replacement for Jasmine Milk Tea ($4.50) after they'd run out of jasmine tea and had to try to brew a replacement batch. Again, I'm disregarding the jasmine milk tea and I actually would even praise them for offering to make a replacement drink if I wasn't happy. I wasn't, so I asked. Anyway, the ceylon milk tea. It wasn't very strong in ceylon flavor, nor was it a delicious milk tea experience. The drink certainly had a smooth mouthfeel, but I simply expect more flavor after having tried dozens of bubble tea shops in various cities. I think the non-dairy creamer which they use might even coat the palate and obscure the tea's flavor. And considering the high price, I wouldn't look forward at all to coming back, parking notwithstanding. Sharp Tea fills a niche in what is presumably a busy shopping area, but they need to provide sharper flavor in addition to their service if they would like to succeed long-term. For now, I am unlikely to return even if I should revisit this plaza in the future. read more

Another tea place? There are plenty of them around here so it was easy to overlook Sharp Tea because it's in a little tucked away corner. I didn't think there would be anything to it; I thought it was the usual mix of lattes, milk teas and smoothies but they had a line of 'fresh fruit' teas. I went with the Mango Green tea, lite ice with 25% sugar. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much. I figured with that little sugar that there wouldn't be much fruit in the 'fresh fruit.' I was pleasantly wrong. There were nice little pieces of mango and there was a lot of natural sweetness to it that didn't need a ton of simple syrup. The jasmine tea here was good. The black tea however had too much ice since they explained that it's a very concentrated tea and thick cream so it needs the ice to water it down more. Moral of the story is don't inhale it in .1 seconds because then you get very little tea and a cup full of ice. You also can ask for less ice. The strawberries pancake there was good. It's pretty good! Coming from a location with bunch of boba places as a competition, this joint stands out. The baristas of this place were so nice and accommodating. The ambiance were this place really shines because of their simple, but memorable decor. Plus, they have a great location.. smack on the middle of Little Tokyo plaza. Come here for the Japanese fluffy air pancakes. They are very very good. The tiramisu air pancake is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. It is one of the most popular items on their menu. I am recommending Sharp Tea for their cakes, unfortunately not for their drinks. I got the house milk tea with less ice and 50 percent sugar, and I was not very satisfied. And the air pancakes definitely have more of an eggy taste, but it's not overpowering nor is it super noticeable at all! I'm not going to lie, my very first impression of Sharp Tea wasn't very good - other than this really small store looking a bit like a mess and also messing up on some orders to add to that, the prices looked a little exorbitant to me, even when I was considering the location it was at. But then I tried the store's signature Sharp Milk Tea and wow, I was blown away. I know it may sound cliche as an Asian person to say I've had a lot of milk tea in my life but I really have and this milk tea had a smoothness and the right amount of sweetness even at the 50% level to make it one of the best milk teas I've ever had. The taste of the drink reminded me of a boba milk tea from Taiwan's famed Chun Shui Tang but with a lighter texture. When you've had so many milk teas is your lifetime, something like this is a big blast of fresh air. Despite the hiccups, I would come back to Sharp Tea to try their fluffy pancakes and even more of their milk teas, which I hope are as good as their base milk tea.
