I called the store today and told them I had a flat in my tire and asked if they could could fix it fast. The woman said yes no problem come in, we will replace the tube and it would take 10 minutes. I get there and let them know I was the one who called and the woman was super kind and tells me to drop it off with the old short man with a pony tail who works on the bikes. I did and this guy was super rude. He takes my bike and begins to talk down to me saying I lied about having to replace a tube and berates me like a child as if I am supposed to know all the details of the bike. I never said I had to replace a tube, his co worker the woman said I had to do that. I'm new to biking and have no idea, that's why I brought it to them to fix! The entire time I was there he had an attitude problem and had zero customer service skills. Don't waste your time at this shop. Go else where! read more

I have been in this shop several times and even bought my wife a bike here a few years ago but I am done with them. As mentioned by several others they are totally condescending and down right rude sometimes. I recently went in for some help with some new pedals for my new Pivot bike. I had been looking for a new bike for a while and I actually test rode a few here but I had a Santa Cruz before and liked it but the Pivot just felt great. So I bought it...from another shop...God forbid! When I came in with a question about new pedals, the guys asked me what kind of bike I bought and when I told him "Pivot", he rolled his eyes and literally turned and walked away from me shaking his head. I had run into some static from these guys before but this was the last straw. Will never go in there again. read more

I had a break pad that fell off - should be a two minute fix, but I was having some trouble. Rather than go to Mike's Bikes in WC, I opted to go local (I live a few blocks away). I walked in and asked for "five minutes of goodwill." Two mechanics were busy (even though the place was empty) and neither was particularly friendly, but they said they would help when they were done. Ten minutes later, one finished and grabbed my bike. He said my pads were pretty worn down and that I should replace them - they were only $11.95. I'm not sure that's the case, but whatever - easier to pay that then to drive to WC. Five minutes later, he rang me up for...$29. He said he hadn't factored in the labor. Maybe he was telling the truth. But if I'm a small-town bike shop, I'm looking to earn goodwill, not tack on unnecessary maintenance and charge customers for tiny increments of labor. read more

They have zero tact and poor customer service. I went down three weeks ago for cruiser replacement pedals and the not so nice person behind the counter looked and acted like I should be privileged to be in the shop. They didn't have the pedals, so I left. Today my son went down to get help on his road bike. He said he had a flat and needed help. Their guy said he didn't have a flat and sold him a tire pump. Such poor, condescending customer service it's literally astonishing. I purchased a $4000 mountain bike from these guys. Been biking my whole life, it was time for a new one, tested a few at local shops and liked the one at Sharp. Three years later the frame breaks. No worries, it's under warranty. I call them, they say bring it in. I get there and they say- and this is the owner mind you- "do you have the receipt with you?" I said "no, you guys have a copy though correct?" He said "yes, but it's really a hassle for us to look for it. It would really be better if you drove home, (a city away) and brought it back." WOW. ok. You're going to tell a customer who's spent thousands in your store, it's too much trouble to look through a file cabinet for him? I told them I thought it was peculiar that a business would tell a customer that. They just said, "yeah, it'd really be better if you drove home and got it." I couldn't find it at home, they found it later and the ball got rolling. THEY HAD MY BIKE FOR SIX WEEKS. Twice I called and they said they had "received the parts a couple days ago, so it should be ready in a couple days." That is correct. My bike was there for weeks and they could sit on that job for four or five days after they received the parts. First time was a false alarm- they either ordered the wrong parts from the manufacturer or the manufacturer sent them the wrong parts. Second time- six weeks later- it was actually ready. I came in grabbed the bike, said thanks and the owner said he had to charge me labor. Said he was giving me a discount though, since really they'd put in four or five hours and they were only charging me for one. 75 bucks... for an hour. I said, "Really? You guys had my bike for a month and a half, doing lifetime warranty work, and you're going to charge me?" He said "yes. It's standard practice at bike shops." I was blown away. He would rather have $75 and throw away my business and referrals, than simply take the responsible, thoughtful, kind, business savvy route. All he had to say was, "you know what? I apologize it took so with your bike. It's on the house." ... he would've had a repeat customer for life. But he chooses to treat people poorly. I imagine he does just fine since he's been in business a while. Imagine how good business would be if he treated his customers well though. Seriously unbelievable. read more

I went into this shop to have a crown race (thin piece of metal for headset) swapped between forks. I asked the shop guy how much he charged and he said "I charge based on the time taken". Sounded good to me so after he removed the crown race (5 mins) I asked him to resize the steer tube (2-3 mins) then asked him to set the star nut (1-2 mins). In total he worked for about 15 mins, max. We went to the register and he said "How does $45 sound?" I was stunned, I had the same service done at Hank & Frank a month earlier and it cost $15. I told him that, and reminded him he said charge for time taken ($45 for 15 mins = $180/hr). He said "Ok my boss is here, meet me in the middle at $35". I am no mathematician but I do believe the middle of 45 and 15 would be $30. I didn't say anything and handed him my credit card, never to return. Conclusion - Don't take your service business here, they overcharge by at least 2x. read more

I took my bike in for a service and it came back better than when I first purchased it. I told them that my Di2 gears were having issues and the original shop tried and failed to fix the issue. Since the service, the gears are now fantastic. The team are really helpful and friendly. They also worked around my schedule to ensure it was ready for when I needed to pick it up and they texted me when it was ready. As I am a Bicycle Freak I love a good Bike Shop. One with that Phil Wood's Tenacious Grease smell. Fresh rubber tires smell. Mmmmm. Yeah. Sharp is a High-End bike shop. High-End bike shops are sort of an issue with me--I like that, in general, the Mechanics know what the heck they are doing and are less likely to screw your bike or wheels up, but there tends to be a bit of an attitude at some of these places. Sharp--no attitude. Work done right the first time and on time. Yes--pricey, but in this case you get what you pay for. 5 stars for service and attitude--you will not find any of the Snobby Elite DoucheBaggery here that you will at say Pegasus or Cal Pedaler in Danville where they look down on you if you are more than2% body fat , are not a racer wannabee, and not wheeling around a $10,000.00 bike. 3 Stars for Price--Ouch--they are going to hurt you in the wallet 5 stars for competence--My bike was pristine after the overhaul and in Like New condition. (Too bad I'm not!!!!) 3 Stars for location--Man, riding your bike to this location is going to involve dodging lots of traffic, and driving is even worse I'll average this one to 4 Stars... read more

Whoa! I came on to give Matt and Sharp Bicycle a great shoutout, and was surprised to see that one star review from someone!! This is NOT the experience I had!! I brought my Trek Mountain Bike in for a major tune-up (it'd been in my attic for 20+ years!), and Matt couldn't have been nicer, more professional and accommodating. He didn't try to "up-sell" me, he listened to why I wanted to restore an old bike, and he did it for a very fair price. That bike looks better than new, and when I am ready to step up my game, he'll get my business!! read more

Very vague about the work they are doing and will try to talk "down" , play the passive aggressive thing to make you feel bad that you don't know much about bikes. I am updating my review (staying at 5 stars) just to really emphasize THIS IS THE ONLY BIKE SHOP I WILL GO TO. I've never had a better experience at a bike shop (let alone a store in general). They know their products, they love their products and are very friendly. At Sharp, any cycling questions I have are answered. "What's the best way to go down this hill?" "What's the sound my bike is making?" "What's a smooth ride around here?" "I get a little pain (here). What can I do to help this?" Sharp has answered all of the above and more. To all of those bad reviewers, I really don't understand you. Sharp has been NOTHING BUT HELPFUL; full of knowledge and advice. I go in there just to say "hi" in the middle of my rides in Lafayette. I'm not an advanced cyclist, but I wanted to get a nice road bike for my next triathlon. A friend recommended Sharp bicycles and I never looked back. I was overwhelmed by the selection and friendliness of the staff. The staff even gave me some training tips and even some local groups that would be perfect for my skill level. Sharp bicycle in my opinion is one of the BEST bike shops in the area. I would give them a 10 out of 5 if I could and here is why. . . . After coming back into biking after being in a very bad auto accident I was very nervous about buying a bike, and also missing my loved bike shop in Cotati, I thought I would have to get a flat bar road bike-which I really was not excited about. I wanted to buy locally, and I wanted to get the most for my money so I shopped around. I went to Hank and Frank in Lafayette where I had one of the WORST experinces in customer service the owner was extremely rude and treated me like I had no clue about bikes-in other words he wouldnt talk to me unless I was spending $1,000 or more on a bike. I also went to Mike's bikes, Performance, the list goes on and encountered the same really bad customer service at all the local shops EXCEPT Sharp Bicycle. Sharp Bicycle answered all of my questions, they didnt pressure me to buy, they treated me like family. I had by far the best customer service experience here. Yes I spent a little more then I was planning on but for me its definately worth it!!!!! I've been a Sharp customer for years, (bike purchases, repairs, tune ups). I've always been quite satisfied with the service. The owner, Matt, greets me by name. My road bike recently developed an annoying issue with the rear Derailleur searching for the correct sprockets when shifting gears in the larger sprockets ranges. I took it into Sharp. The mechanic asked me a few questions, placed my bike on the post and proceeded to give my bike a mini tune up while I chatted with Matt. As the mechanic handed the bike back to me, I asked Matt what I owed him and he waved me off. No charge. I took the bike for a spin that afternoon. Problem fixed. read more

They carry many high-end bicycles, but they also carry entry-level Trek bikes. Excellent bikes, by the way! Their most inespensive bike is about $300, which is a mountain bike, and their most inexpensive hybrid is $419. They, like Mike's Bikes, offer free tune-ups and diagnostics. Very pompous attitude. Bike was on sale and my old bike had been just stolen. An honest shop would have been candid and said this is not the right fit for you. They were more interested in the sale. Wound up having to buy a new frame after 2 years of uncomfortable riding and a jerry-rigged bike. When I purchased the bike I wanted to swap the dura ace crank for a compact crank and they charged me for the compact which was an ultegra. I tried to patronize this shop twice. Both times I was left with a negative impression. Most recently I went in with my commuter bike to have a broken spoke repaired. They essentially said they couldn't help me; "There are many different types of spokes and I don't know that we have these." The other bike shop in town is not fully open during Covid so I just ignored the rudeness and purchased the bike. Several weeks later I went back to buy some add on items and I was treated very rudely again. I just learned about Sharp bicycle. Had a race in a week and had a bent wheel with loose brakes. Tried to bring it in to REI. They told me that they needed 3 weeks to fix it and the gentleman told me to take it to Sharp bicycle. Since I never heard of them, I figured it wouldn't hurt to see what they said since I really didn't have time to look around. Brought it in on a Monday and they automatically told me what I needed. I think the man's name was Mike. He came over and gave me options of new wheels they had which were reasonably priced and told me he would take care of my brakes. In the end, they had it ready on Wednesday!! Beautiful new wheel and sweet brakes all for a great price. This is a high end bike shop so don't expect crappy wheels and parts. I came into Sharp to have a minor fix up for my bike and the owner of the shop repeatedly referred to my bike as ugly. I am a relative novice in this space and this bike was handed down to me by my cousin, and as such I have a special connection to it. To call a bike that I love "ugly" to my face as a paying customer felt very unprofessional from the owner and frankly rude. I have also been there in the past when members of the staff were loudly arguing creating a not so comfortable shopping experience. I have tried to shop here to support a local shop, but I will certainly not ever be coming back. read more

I was shopping for a new full suspension mountain bike. I went to numerous bike shops in Berkeley, Oakland, and Lafayette. The Sharp shop not only had one of the largest selections of Santa Cruz, Trek, and Fisher, but the staff was extremely helpful and honest in their comparisons. I ended up buying a Santa Cruz Super Light and have been loving it ever since. I took it back within a week and their service department gave it a quick readjustment and I was back on the trail that afternoon. I asked them about some good trails in the East Bay and they gave me some wonderful suggestions and tips. I have rode a few already and had a great time. Over all Sharp Bicycles ended up being a great bike shop and wealth of biking information beyond the purchase. A GREAT FAMILY run business... read more

A couple friends get all their elite racing gear here. Get their bikes tuned here. The knowledge by the staff here is top shelf, just like their products and services. High end bikes in titanium, carbon fiber, steel of the likes: Parlee, Independent Fabrication, Co-Motion, Moots line the walls, awaiting their builds. To some, a bike snob, is a negative, but for me, it's a plus. You can get your childrens bike at the generic box store if you don't want attitude. If you want a basic bike, Sharp has a great selection of Trek and Gary Fisher from your Copenhagen style city daily messenger with fenders and basket to your weekend warrior racer. Be on the lookout for the in-house kegerator, not only snobs when it comes to bicycles, but ultra high end microbrew beer! Sharp has a great selection of high-end bikes that seem to cater to folks who know good bikes and have considerably more money than time. Their prices are fairly high and their service policies and execution are average at best. A shop with this selection of bikes should offer free lifetime tune-ups, not just for the first year after purchase. I also agree with several other reviews that reference the limited technical abilities of the staff. In my experience they have serviceable mechanics that fall below the standards I'd expect given their brand selection. I had to get my orbea re-fit after two attempts at their shop still left me with the feeling something wasn't right. I also was initially charged for my 'free' tune-up. While that in itself wasn't a big deal it was another example of how challenging things were after the purchase. In summary, these guys have a great selection of bikes if you don't mind spending the money and have your own skilled wrench to provide service after the sale. read more

After reading the bad reviews I went into Sharps with some trepidation. I am looking to buy my first "real" mtbike and have pretty much decided on the Superlight being the best bang for my buck and budget. They are one of two local Santa Cruz dealers so I wanted to get a fitting and maybe sit on a couple bikes for size comparison. Matt was working up in his office but when I told them that I had spoken with him on the phone, he came down to meet with me. I am the purchasing manager for a local independent music retailer and know how valuable time is. Here's the meat of this review: I told him straight up that I wasn't ready to buy today and he still spent the next 1/2 hour solid talking with me, educating me on the different frames, letting me sit on bikes etc etc... Thats huge. SO, I pulled a star because the prices he quoted me were full retail and everywhere else has a price break of some sort. I want to give this shop my money and will give them the first chance of refusal to at least match the quotes from the other shop. If it's even close, I'll go with it and return to upgrade to a full 5 stars for pleasurable buying experience. I am not sure why this place has such negative reviews on Yelp. I am completely new to cycling and needed an unbiased opinion from knowledgeable sales staff. Having received invaluable advice from friends and online, I went to several bike shops in SF, Berkeley, Lafayette, and had a very positive experience at Sharp. Being new to the sport, I narrowed down several brands and types of bikes which fit my needs. The sales person answered my questions, made helpful suggestions without being pushy, and gave fairly objective (both negative and positive) comments about all of the bikes I was considering, including those they did not carry. They also promised to put together a bike in my size for me to try out. Two days later, I got a call that the bikes were ready for me to try out. I took them for a spin. While I've done this at other stores, the staff at Sharp did not pressure me into liking the bike. They also did not push any accessories or specific brands -- they simply answered my questions, offered advice, and helped out with everything I needed. I took one star off only because the store is a little smaller than other shops I visited, and the clothing/accessory selection could be a little bigger. read more

No issue is too large or small for them to effectively handle. I was riding yesterday in the area and ran over a screw. It pretty much ruined my tire. My coach told me about this bike shop a few months back and luckily I was close by. They were so friendly and helped me right away. I have Specialized tires and not many shops carry those. I wasn't going to be picky at this point but was pleased when I saw they carried them. Even though it was busy on a sunny Saturday I was out the door and rolling within 15 minutes. Also, although it may sound trivial--they called me by my name--and that just feels good. Was so thrilled even during COVID recently to get my Madone 5.9 Trek road bike updated by top wrench Devlin and all the folks at Sharp Bicycle!. Needed to get out and ride a lot this Spring, with not much else in the world to legally do. Very knowledgeable and friendly owners Matt and Sally Sharp helped me figure out what I needed to reduce the gearing on my original 2004 Dura-Ace double chain ring crank-set so that I could keep up with my friends on climbs with their newer bikes and compact gears. Matt also talked me out of buying all new brake/lever sets, telling me they had developed a method to degunk the shifters that seemed to not work at all anymore, so that they are now good as new. (Saved me hundreds I'm sure). Matt also helped me measure my chain stretch and decide to get a new chain, as well as new rear gear stack, to get the best possible range of lower gears. I figured I would also be needing new front and rear derailleurs to accommodate the new wider range of gears, but Matt assured me the existing ones would work fine. Throw in a tape job on the bars, full service and cleaning and suddenly my 16 year old Madone 5.9 is like new. Just got back from another wonderful ride, and hope I still have time this afternoon to go back in to get some new mountain bike shoes and pedals. read more
