There were a lot of great reviews, so I was hopeful, but I really wasn't overly impressed with the majority of the items I tried. My family ordered the following: Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs, Beef Noodle Soup, Singapore Style Fried Rice Vermicelli, Fried Spring Rolls, Fried Flour Bun with Condensed Milk, House Special Fried Rice, Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet, Chicken Chow Mein and Garlic Stirred Fried Spinach. Highly do not recommend the Fried Spring Rolls or Fried Flour Bun with Condensed Milk. Spring Rolls were somewhat watery and did not have a lot of flavor. The buns were the most dense, hard buns I've eaten in my life...nothing like what I've experienced elsewhere. I did like that the Beef Noodle Soup had a good amount spinach. Most places have the most minimal amount of a veggie, so I appreciated the higher vegetable content. My favorites of the dishes ordered were the House Special Fried Rice and the Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet. There was some difficulty with communication. One of my family members asked what kind of meat was in the House Chow Mein, and the person working started listing their other types of Chow Mein on the menu (beef, chicken, veg., etc.). I wanted something with carbonation and decided to get the Mango Fizzy, which was a huge mistake. I'm not sure why I was expecting more, but it was just an artificial tasting overly sweet drink. (Definitely recommend skipping a drink from here and hopping across the street to the drink place with real ingredients.) All in all, I had enough items I didn't care for, so I think I won't be back in the immediate future.
Food was average as the fried flour buns were hard. They should have been soft and fresh, but they were dense and tough. The beef noodle soup was tasty as there were good quality cuts of beef. The beef was thin sliced and did not have a lot of fat, tendon, and ligaments which was different than other restaurants that typically use Chinese beef stew type meat. The broth had a deep rich flavor and the noodles were thick and delicious even though they were not homemade. The Singapore chow mien had an adequate amount of egg, shrimp, and ham. It was yummy and had a strong curry/spicey flavor. There were also large chunks of green onions which complimented the dish well. Service was good as water was refilled and dishes were served promptly. We were the only customers on a Tuesday during dinner time.
The food was delicious and the portions were bigger than we expected. The staff was nice and quick. We were the only ones in there for dinner on a Wednesday night, so it was quiet. I hope they keep getting good business, so they can stay open and I can come back.
We came here quite late on a Sunday night. We got our food at around 9:30pm and the place was quite empty but to our surprise, it gradually got busier! The waitress recommend the Shanghai Style Braised Pork Belly as it is the most popular dish to order. It tasted alright. The highlight of our meal was the Scallion Pancake (super delicious)! I definitely had better Shanghai food before but because we were hungry from eating such a late dinner, we ended up devouring everything!
Checked out Shanghai Tapas and it was delicious. It's a small restaurant with 2 big tables that can seat 10 people and 4 tables that can seat 4-6 people. Here's what we tried and my rating: Spicy Eggplant 8/10 Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs 10/10 Xiao Long Bao 7/10 Scallion Pancake 7/10 Fried Chicken Wings 8/10 Beef Roll Pancake 8/10 Salt Pepper Fried Tofu 8/10 Garlic Stir-Fried String Beans 7/10 Shanghai-Style Braised Pork Belly 7/10 Good flavor, some pieces were dry. Shanghai Stir-Fried Thick Noodles 7/10 Great texture but a little bland. Fish with sweet & sour sauce 8/10 Interesting dish. It's nice that the fish meat was cut up and easy to grab. Service was amazing and food was good.
I really wanted to try the mini dumplings, that's what drew me to this place. However, they called me after I placed my online order to say they didn't have them and would like to substitute with the pan fried ones. They didn't offer a refund or any other option so I obliged. The pan fried ones were hella burnt. I like crispy, but these were so overcooked and dry. No soup left in them. The Shanghai thick noodles were ok, but these chicken in it was firreeee! So tender and flavorful. I just wish they gave more. There was only like 10 tiny pieces. I was originally going to get garlic broccoli but didn't want to pay like $14 for broccoli, so got the broccoli beef instead. It was ok, but felt pretty small for $15. I really loved my lychee slush and would probably come back just for that. They boba was rock hard. I had to spit them out because they were literally inedible. I know cold drinks make boba hard, but these were literal rocks.. I'd be willing to try the boba in a different, non-slush drink just to give it a fair chance though. Overall, it was very hit-or-miss. Some things great and others disappointing. I still want to try the mini dumplings, so I will be back.
I ordered takeout from Shanghai Tapas in Elk Grove using a $40 Groupon. The restaurant is a decent size, nice, and clean. I got the Shanghai Special Fried Rice, Beef Roll Pancake, and Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings). Everything was good - the fried rice had flavor, the beef roll pancake was tasty, and the soup dumplings were juicy. I waited about 30 minutes for takeout, even though no one else was there, and there was a slightly awkward moment during payment with a $2 bill I had, but she brought out the card machine, so it worked out. Overall, the food wasn't bad, and it's worth trying if you're in the area.
Came by to grab my son an after school snack and wow .. the restaurant itself looks a bit cramped .. very small space with 2 big family style tables and about 8-9 tables that seats 4 Service was great.. the server was super nice and explained the different food options and sauces on dishes I asked about. In the end I ordered the popcorn chicken, the mini pan fried pork buns and the fried flour bun with condensed milk The popcorn chicken had a light flavor but tastes great. The mini pan fried pork buns was delicious! The flavor was good and the wrap was on the chewy side not mushy! The flour bun was great with the condensed milk I would like to come back another day and have a sit down meal and try their dinner menu and other snacks
Ordered delivery for lunch at work and honestly they did a great job with the packaging. Everything was packed really well so the food held up during delivery, which I always appreciate. Also loved the containers they used because they are actually sturdy enough to reuse later. The chicken chow mein came with those thick, round noodles. I personally love the thin noodles because it's nostalgic. The sauce they cooked it in made the noodles super flavorful and really satisfying. I would not have minded a bit more chicken in it, but luckily we ordered a few extra dishes so it worked out. The orange chicken was really good too. It was nice and meaty and the citrus flavor was not too overpowering, which I liked. Sometimes orange chicken can be way too sweet or tangy, but this one felt pretty balanced. We also tried their lunch special version of the orange chicken which is a great option if you do not want to commit to a full entrée for yourself. It is a lot cheaper and still a really solid portion for the price. Not every dish is available for the lunch special, mostly the classic options you would normally see at a Chinese restaurant like beef and broccoli or orange chicken. The lunch special also came with rice and veggies which made it feel like a nice complete meal. The braised pork belly was the clear winner for me. The pork was cooked perfectly and super easy to bite into. The skin was soft and plump and had great flavor. They also included extra sauce in the container which was perfect for drizzling over rice. It even came with egg soaked in that rich brown sauce. Overall the portions were really solid and everything tasted great. Definitely the standout dish of the order.
Tried this spot out because they were running a Groupon. The location is a bit far from our house, but wanted to try a new spot! Service was pretty good, our waitress was very friendly and the food came out quick. We were seated right by the door, and it wasn't super comfortable when people came in or out. Food was good! Favorite being beef with broccoli, then noodles, and then the pot stickers. We also got egg rolls that were decent, and the buns were ok... definitely recommend the beef with broccoli! It felt very traditional, there were a couple of families who came in for a family style meal (round table with lazy Suzanne). Food tasted healthier than some places, broccoli being fresher and beef also was super good. If you're in the area, recommend stopping by for a nice Chinese meal.
Recently visited this location since it was new in the area. Small restaurant but very attentive to their guests. We ordered a few food options, my favorite was their braised pork belly. Soup was good. Portions are big, good to share. We will definitely be back.
Wasn't expecting a lot from this place, but it really surprised me and the food was actually really good. The menu was interesting and they also do banquet style menus. Beef roll- good, wasn't too saucey like other places and the outside was like a flaky scallion pancake. Sizzling beef- really good, meat tender and flavorful Green beans- flavorful Shanghai thick noodle- okay Beef noodle soup- good Mini pan fried baos, reminded me a little like street foods in Shanghai Spicy fish- really good Overall, I think the food was great. The chef is supposedly from Shanghai. Staff was friendly. I was expecting small tapas like snacks but they have real dishes. Will be back to try the other things on the menu.

They are open until midnight, which makes it a great option if you are looking for a late night bite. When we arrived around 9 PM, there was plenty of seating available. The space itself is on the smaller side, but the booths with wooden wheel style benches were a fun touch. There were also tables dressed with white tablecloths, which gave it a slightly elevated feel. It seems like they do a strong takeout business, as there were many people going in and out picking up orders. The service was impeccable. The woman who greeted us made the entire experience enjoyable from the start. She was attentive, enthusiastic, and genuinely helpful when we asked for recommendations. Her energy really enhanced the meal. We ended up ordering the following: 1. Braised Pork Belly: Great flavors and consistency. The pork was rich and satisfying, and I especially loved the boiled eggs that came with it. This is definitely one of their standout dishes. 2. House Special Fried Rice: This paired perfectly with the pork belly. The flavors were comforting and well balanced, and it is something I could easily eat again and again. 3. Sweet and Sour Cucumbers: This was the only dish I probably would not order again. The flavors were pleasant, but it did not stand out the way the first two dishes did. 4. Beef Rolls: These had nice flavor and texture, though the portion was on the smaller side. The food came out quickly, and the server checked in on us throughout the meal. She was great at striking up conversation and made us feel genuinely welcomed. You could tell she truly cared about the restaurant, which made the dining experience even better beyond just the food. I've already been here twice, and both times I ordered the Xiao Long Bao! The second time I came, I even got to see the owner making the dumplings, which was so cool to see. I really love supporting small, family-owned businesses like this. They may be low-key and easy to miss, but the quality is seriously there! Every once in a while, you stumble into a restaurant that reminds you why you love going out to eat. This is one of those places. My wife and I ordered the braised pork belly, beef scallion pancake, crushed cucumber & garlic salad, and the mini pan-fried dumplings. Every dish was very well executed. The pork belly was *perfectly* cooked with just the right balance of spices. The beef scallion pancake was another standout, especially because it wasn't smeared with an overwhelming amount of hoisin sauce like we've had elsewhere. Every ingredient had room to speak for itself. The mini pan-fried dumplings offered great contrast in texture: crisp on the bottom, delicate on top, with a juicy filling and a unique vinegar-forward dipping sauce that tied everything together. The crushed cucumber and garlic salad was the perfect palate cleanser alongside the richer dishes. We had the chance to chat with Elaine, who we believe is one of the owners. She was warm, humble, and genuinely welcoming. As fellow restaurant operators, we especially enjoy supporting independently owned spots like this. We agreed this may have been the most satisfying meal we've had at a Sacramento-area restaurant all year. Very thoughtful flavors. We had such a wonderful experience at Shanghai Tapas! We walked in and ordered with only about 30 minutes left before closing, but the staff were incredibly warm, welcoming, and attentive. At no point did we feel rushed or that they were just waiting for us to leave. Their hospitality really made our evening. The food was outstanding. The Mini Pan (fried pork buns) was easily one of the best dishes we've had. As someone who usually eats Cantonese-style pan-fried buns that are much larger, I was impressed by how small and delicate these were. They clearly take a lot of skill to make. Each one had a thin, crispy bottom, juicy and flavorful pork filling, and was the perfect one-bite size. The Beef Scallion Roll was equally amazing. The wrapper was thin and flaky, packed with generous amounts of tender, fragrant beef and fresh scallions. Every bite was fresh and delicious. What impressed us even more was learning that everything is made in-house. You can really taste the quality and care in every dish. Amazing food, outstanding service, and a great dining experience from start to finish. We'll definitely be coming back and highly recommend this place! read more

This Place is Amazing! A hole in the wall by Walmart Elk Grove Blvd across from the Auto Mall. They have a large menu with so many options. We ordered the following and still had left overs because the portions are so big: Appetizer: 1- Westlake Soup ( loved the texture due to eggwhites ) 2- Pan fried dumplings (small bite sized pieces) Main: 1-combination fried rice (so many pieces of meat/chicken/beef/shrimp) 2-braised pork belly(***Must Order***) 3- Mapo Tofu ( perfect silkyness with right amount of spice) 4-stir fried string.beans ( done just right) Food 5/5 [we can't wait to come back and try more dishes] Service 5/5 (such friendly staff) Hot Tea 5/5 Wish we had room for dessert. They have bingsu also. If you love Chinese Food this is a must. read more
Look this place is definitely deceiving because it is in a strip center/mall. When I saw it in the search the general pictures that were already there peaked my interest and I told my friend let's try it out. We ate here on December 5th around 1ish. When we got there one other table was seated and we noticed that there was a lot of to go orders coming through. Maybe 10 minutes later there was another party of five and another party of four that came in. The items we ordered were the beef soup, the braised pork belly, the cucumber salad, and the pot stickers. Everything was made to order and was extremely fresh. My favorite thing that I would go back just to have on its own was the beef soup. The meat was super tender and the flavor of the broth was just something I never had before. A little sweet a little salty but also earthy like a little bit of everything which is so good. Second was definitely the braised pork belly as you took a bite of the cucumber. The crunchiness of the pork belly with the sweet coolness of the cucumber was perfect. And I will say at first I was a little surprised at the potstickers didn't have as much flavor but I realized the technique is you take a bite of the potsticker and then drink a little bit of the soda. Something about the carbonation and the sweetness really enhance the flavor of the pot sticker itself. The Ambiance of the place was super chill and laid back. Again there was a TV on that had a show in the background it wasn't very loud so you could definitely have conversations and our waitress was phenomenal. She checked in on us multiple times make sure we had everything we needed and was just the sweetest kindest person. Really excited to go back and try out the other items because again I loved all the things we had. read more
Haven't even heard of this place but we saw the sign when we drove by one day. It's a small location but they were so nice here. The lady was so sweet and she made sure to get our order in before the large party next to us placed theirs, so we wouldn't have to wait long! We started off with the chicken fried rice which is totally normal and we got it for the kids, but ended up being one of my favorites. So flavorful and perfectly cooked rice, not dry at all! The wonton soup was also really good, loved all the cilantro they used. I liked the mini pan fried buns which come with a soda, just wish you could pick a milk tea instead! It was a fun little drink and snack to eat. The beef roll was packed with meat and very flavorful. The only disappointment was the xiao long bao. No soup whatsoever! I was craving some fried rice and popcorn chicken, and since Shanghai Tapas (sign says SH Tapas) was new, we decided to check them out. We ordered the house special fried rice and popcorn chicken on DoorDash for to-go. When we went to go pick up the order, there was one table eating inside. The food was ready very quickly, within 10-15 minutes. Both dishes were piping hot when they came out. House special fried rice: Has multiple types of protein including beef (tender), shrimp, and chicken. The shrimp was kind of salty, but the rest of the fried was was seasoned enough. The fried rice was also a bit oily, but the dish had a bit of wok char, which I enjoyed. Popcorn chicken: Of note, they cracked the top of the lid so that our popcorn chicken didn't steam and become salty. The popcorn chicken had a sweet smell to it, like funnel cakes. The popcorn chicken was also lightly sweet to me, which is not what I expected. My husband didn't think it tasted sweet. The chicken pieces were also on the smaller side, but crispy. There was cilantro in it rather than the typical basil in popcorn chicken. It came with a side of chili oil. It wasn't bad, but not what I was expecting. The rest of the menu seems to offer some unique dishes (including a special menu, like banquet style) and I'd be curious to try them out again in the future! read more
We came here for lunch, and the restaurant wasn't busy at all. We ordered the house special fried rice, Shanghai-style braised pork belly, and a strawberry shave ice. The fried rice had a nice mix of different proteins, which was great, and everything was tender and easy to bite. However, the dish was a bit too salty and oily for my taste -- I should have remembered to ask for less oil and less salt. The braised pork belly was flavorful but unfortunately arrived lukewarm. The shave ice wasn't outstanding. On the bright side, the staff was friendly, and the plaza has plenty of parking, which is convenient. read more

Love this place! The food portions are generous, flavorful, and fresh! You won't get any more authentic Chinese food as Chef Wong is from Shanghai and can help with any Shanghai dishes you may be craving, just make sure you call in advance if you plan to order outside their menu. This is definitely my go to for fresh, authentic Chinese food. read more
Came on a quiet weekday during lunch and was immediately greeted by the staff there. We were quickly seated and given our menus. We ordered their spicy eggplant and pan-fried pork buns. The food came out promptly and portion sizes were generous! We thoroughly enjoyed our food! Love that they have a decent amount of vegetarian options offered! read more
Small and cozy like most Shanghainess restaurant located in a quite corner of Walmart plaza on EG. When we entered there was only 1 family having dinner however they do have a steady take outs. Although there only one person working there, she was very efficient with the services. We enjoyed the food, so we'll be back for some dumplings next time. read more

I was here for lunch with my sister because I was craving braised pork belly, and this popped up. Shanghai Tapas is located in an unassuming plaza that I would normally overlook since there are other restaurants across the street. Upon stepping inside, it has a pretty cute setup. There's the traditional round table for larger groups and to the side they have booth like table with wooden benches. It looks like there is only one server but she is very attentive and welcoming. There's a QR code at the table but it's mainly for online ordering. Shanghai-Braised Pork Belly: 4.5/5 I was pleasantly surprised by the eatability of it meaning I didn't get sick from eating three pieces. It comes with 2 eggs that are cut in half. It's not as tender or as rich as I expected, but it gets the craving out of the way. Guilt free braids pork belly. Beef Noodle Soup: 5/5 I'm sorry I misjudged you, but this one is the darkhorse? The noodle is standard but the soup is incredibly rich and flavorful. Well seasoned and the beef pieces complemented it. However, this is not like the Taiwanese traditional beef noodle soup with the pickled mustard greens, tendons and slightly acidic base from the tomato, but it stands out on its own. Shepherd Purse Wonton: 5/5 The star of the show. It's exactly what I was looking for in a wonton soup. My sister and I compared it to homemade, the good kind and the meat is bouncing. It's a very comforting dish and I would order this again. The broth is light, but not plain. Great if you have a cold. Mini Pan Fried Pork Bun: 3.5/5 It comes with a side drink of your choice but don't think you're missing much if you don't order it. It's standard and a bit on the doughy side. Great for kids. While I'll think the food overall itself was a 4/5, the service easily bumps my rating up to a 5/5. Despite being the only server, the host (?) often checks in on us and makes sure we have everything. She even provide recommendations and helps us packed our food to go (we expected small plates because tapas, but ended up over ordering since we underestimate the portion size). On that note while she was friendly to us as well, she does chat more with you if you're primarily a mandarin/canto speaker. read more
Stopped in to grab a bite on a Saturday around lunch. First time here. It's right next door to the liquor store near the plaza where Walmart is by the 99. It's a small restaurant. First thing I noticed were the booth like tables against the wall. It's cute. It wasn't busy only one other table. I ordered the Shanghai thick noodle. I asked the waitress what it was and she said it was egg noodle with some chicken and spinach. I'm thinking it's the egg noodle like the kind you get w/ pho or when you order wonton soup with egg noodles. I love egg noodles. But It's not egg noodles. It's thick noodles which I get from the name of it as it's called Shanghai Thick noodle. It just threw me off as the waitress said it was egg noodles. When my order arrived, it was thick noodles almost udon like. It Comes with just a few pieces of chicken & few pieces of spinach. Think they could add just a bit more chicken & spinach. This restaurant is located on a mini strip of restaurants and the restaurant sign actually reads: SH Tapas. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience at this restaurant. My sister, nephew, and I came here on a Friday night around 9pm. There were no customers when we walked in, we were greeted and immediately seated. We were not too hungry, so we decided to order appetizers off of the "late-night" menu, which I assumed was their version of a happy hour menu. We went with the shrimp skewer (2.50/skewer) and the calamari (12.99). The skewer came with two pieces of shrimp, shell on. They were pretty bland and overcooked. The calamari looked like it was a great choice, but unfortunately, it tasted sour and spoiled. When the check finally came I was a little confused as the total was $25. I asked our server as there was no breakdown on the receipt and she said that it was 2.50/shrimp. I had to let her know that on the menu it said 2.50/skewer, not 2.50/shrimp. She annoyingly said that was not the case, but that she would fix it. She then said, $20? I had to take out my calculator and show her that 12.99 + 2.50 does not equal $20, even considering tax. I could not believe that she was really negotiating the price of our two appetizers. I finally agreed to pay $19 because I just wanted to get out of there. I refused to tip and they stared at us as we left. I will definitely not be returning. read more

My fiancé and I had an exceptional dining experience at Shanghai Tapas on a Friday evening around 7:30 PM. This small spot was a great find. It was nice and empty as when we arrived. What really made the evening was the incredible customer service, specifically from our server. She was the definition of welcoming, with a wonderfully happy and bubbly personality that immediately made us feel comfortable. Her knowledge of the menu was impressive--She didn't just rattle off descriptions; she elaborated on the taste of several items I was considering. Her spot-on feedback actually helped me change my mind and guided me toward dishes that perfectly matched what I was craving. The food itself was nothing short of incredible. We are now absolutely obsessed with the Shanghai fried thick noodles--they are a mandatory order! We also indulged in the popcorn chicken, which was crisp and went perfectly with a dash of their chili oil. We rounded out our meal with both the mini fried buns and the soup buns. Everything tasted fresh. The speed and thoughtfulness of the service were amazing; the mini fried buns literally arrived on our Coke. This was a fantastic experience from start to finish. With amazing food and outstanding service, we will definitely be going back! read more
The restaurant is too new for a fair ratings, so I will just put a average. It is so new that they didn't even have normal restaurant to go box but using Glad black box from Walmart, which is nice as that brand name one is probably more expensive for them but more secure for us. Restaurant is small and cozy. The interior is decorated with Asian wheel theme on the left, and wood chair table on the right. Furniture is new and interior design looks good. All dishes are cooked when ordered, so expect a little wait time for freshly cooked food, or order ahead The two ladies staff members is very nice. They are from Guangzhou so they speak both Cantonese and Mandarin. They said the owner and chef are from Shanghai. I can see the restaurant will be a nice location for a multi-family / friends party as it is so small. When you order, they go by the number like panda express than the name of the dish. I thought that was funny. I didn't order much authentic Shanghaiese dishes despite the chef are from Shanghai. I had a little bit of hard time ordering actually with that information because the dishes is not the usual suspect I would see in a Shanghai restaurant. For example, the beef roll is not that typical in a all our Shanghai restaurant. I have to try it anyway because my husband has to try it in every restaurant as long as it is on the menu. It taste average. It is a bit on the oily side, and the housin source is only on the inside of the rolls. There is no sauce in between the beef or cucumber. The beef taste good and so is the cucumber. We picked two protein: peppered beef and spareribs. The beef taste better than spareribs, though the expectations need to be lowered to adjust to a wider western audience. The spareribs, which is not a Shanghai dish again, sauce is flour and not sticky and glaced authentic version. The vegetable is a little disappointing as it was soaked in the water/sauce. By the time you take out it will feel oily and turned yellow. The seasoning and flavor is good. Again probably above average if you have it there and below average as to go. The yangzhou fried rice is another dish that is probably designed to fit the widen western audience palette. It taste average. It uses deli meat and the (weird) small shrimp (that is coated) and again on the oily side. As I was waiting for my food to be ready I did looked at others food. They seemed to be heavily use of dark soy sauce in the kitchen, which makes the food look too dark and not as appetizing. For example, the pan fried noodles looks good, but lacking the normal suspect like shredded cabbage or carrot or something crunch with it and way too dark. The pork belly looks dark and not too appetizing. It didnt have the glaze effect to coat the meat. The crab rice cake dish, which is probably the most authentic Shanghaiese dish, looks very good and appetizing. So I believe the chef is testing the new kitchen and menu for wider audience at this opening phase. The other puzzling thing was that smoked fish is only on the family menu. Smoked food is definitely a Shanghaiese cruisine. What puzzled me was that it takes almost the same amount of set up and could expand that side of the specialty menu like smoked eggs, smoked duck (which probably easier to accept on the west), rather than the safe food menu options that is not their specialty (and end up just another Chinese restaurant). Same thing for the veggie side of the menu with cooked vegetables and fried tofu, instead of the famous cold dish. That nice beef slices on the beef roll with definitely be a good appetizer dish. There is no much options on soup noodles like a regular Shanghai/Beijing restaurant, but they did have 1 wonton on the menu. Might try it in winter when the climate is more forgiving to make wonton in California. I also didn't try the meat dumpings either for the same reason. Even though it was takeout my husband did use the restroom and said it was lacking in paper towels but very clean. There are lots of parking area whic is nice. read more

Best authentic fresh made Chinese food in elk grove. Very mushroom reminiscent of food growing up as a kid with an old mom and pop shop vibe. With food being made fresh there a little bit of a wait but you can literally smell the food and is worth the wait! Here at least once a week! Must try! read more
