Super disappointed...I have weak nails from biting and went in for gel extensions as I think i'll be getting engaged this upcoming weekend. I went straight after work around 6pm (online said they close at 7:30) I showed a few reference photos asking for pearl chrome nails. The nail tech seemed to be rushing and had trouble getting the nails smooth. She didn't put polish just chrome over the tip, (perhaps a miscommunication because I asked for cream maybe she thought I said clear?) They are incredibly bumpy and uneven. They charged me $120 +gratuity (wasn't given the price until after) Included photos of my nails before they added tips, the reference photos I showed the nail tech, and the manicure they gave me. read more

First time here and it was a just average gel mani - unsure of the nail tech's name but she seemed a bit new and for walk-ins. The overall finished product is just fine, but I'll try another nail tech next time! Pros - Nice atmosphere - Lots of colors Cons - Kept getting gel around the nail folds and on my fingers, and she tried to file it away which led to micro cuts - Left leftover gel from my last set, which I'm sure isn't the worst thing, but it was such a small amount to leave - Didn't notice stray dust particles, bubbling, or uneven nails until I asked to fix it - Made nails shorter than what we agreed upon? Wish I had seen the reviews prior to coming here. My friend and I stopped in here as we were nearby. I had a regular manicure and the worker cut several of my cuticles (they were bleeding). Separately my friend waited a while for her service in which they could have set her up practically...anyway she decided to have a different service instead after which the person who tended to her made a scene about providing a cash tip (they don't have the option for tips via card payment), on top of that, the worker seemed to demand more than 20% and suggested to her there was an ATM outside. I've been coming here over 2 years and never had any issues or complaints. The entire staff is amazing. The spa is super clean and everyone is always always polite. I've been to other spas and get the feeling I'm being rushed so they can move on to the next customer, Bt that is never the case here. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SPA! I get my eyelashes done every two weeks and a gel mani/pedi every two weeks! My HUSBAND got the cold laser hair removal from his back and it doesn't hurt, he feel asleep! He has had it twice over that last year and it looks great! Ive been coming here for the past 4 years! The best spa I've been too! They listen to you and remember details! Came in for the $30 mani/pedi special while having some time to kill & recently leaving a fashion show casting in the area. Friendly staff, comfortable atmosphere (looking at the glass waterfall inside while getting my pedicure, I felt myself drift off a few times though I may also have had a lack of sleep affecting that) & I have some nice nails and toes. Got a shoulder massage while waiting on the finger & toe nails to dry and the girl helping me made sure my toes weren't going to smudge up in my sneakers. They even let me use the ladies room here & had water available. Now the massage chair doesn't have one of those vibration things but I personally didn't mind. Also, if you get quick dry polish on your nails it is $1 extra. Otherwise, no complaints here. There wasn't a huge crowd & it WAS a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. read more

Avoid this place AT ALL COSTS. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING EXCEPT TAKING YOUR MONEY!!! When it comes to manicures, you will ripped off by sweet talkers and look like you're going to a Halloween party. The polish I had the last TWO TIMES (shame on me for returning) was bumpy and did not turn out the color I was shown. If you want a manicure in Park Slope, try 7th Avenue Nails on the corner of Union Street and 7th Avenue (two blocks up the slope). They've been in the neighborhood, for at least 20 years and know what they are doing. I really want to love this shanghaispa SHAM on 5th Avenue, but I had my SECOND AWFUL disaster there. The manicures are overpriced, the nail polish is old and bubbles up, making it hard for the manicurist to paint nails, the manicurists are VERY young and inexperienced, so they typically require 50-60 minutes to do your nails and then another 10-20 minutes to fix their mistakes. Additionally, if you point out a problem, like bubbles in dry nail polish or the wrong color of polish, they insist the polish isn't dry, and the bubbles (that never disappear) will go eventually disappear (maybe they mean after you soak your hands in nail polish remover for two hours?), while taking $50 from you for what should be a simple 30-minute manicure. It's my own fault for returning, before that, a different young and inexperienced manicurist broke two nails. I was hoping to have a positive experience and write a positive review. Yet. I tried reaching out to the manager, who appears to be avoiding me. So again: Avoid this place AT ALL COSTS. I would highly recommend not going here. I made the mistake once when Reedchy was booked up, and I regret it. Every single esthetician was eating at her nail desk. It started when one woman actually pulled a bag of crunchy snacks from her drawer, and chowed down while her client's hands were wrapped, then continued with the treatment while still chewing, without ever washing her own snack hands before touching the client. It was like dominoes after that, all the estheticians started eating, one by one, as they saw snacks coming out. It was bizzaro, nasty world. Frankly, the entire salon needs a good cleaning and scrub down--dust everywhere. I had powder gel put on, which I found pretty unsanitary. They coat your nail, then dip your entire finger in the powder container. Mine was a brand new container, but I felt grossed out by whomever would be sticking their finger in next... Normally they should have applied powder directly to the nail by sprinkling it on with a tool. Just save yourself the time, and book somewhere else. read more

I was rushed to the point of skipping entire steps (usually one soaks before being filed on both hands and feet- doing it dry was a disgusting experience) and apparently "5$ extra" really means $55 dollars total- BEWARE. Stay away- there's a much nicer place up the street and much more affordable (and honest!) options all up and down 5th avenue. I won't let convenience trump quality ever again with this place. I can't speak for the previous reviews, but I feel this salon/spa is amazing! The owner of "H&L nail salon" decided to open up Shanghai Spa across the street for all your spa needs. She did a wonderful job! The salon is absolutely gorgeous, tranquil and relaxing. The decor is serene and Asian inspired and it always smells good! Anytime you go to get a manicure or pedicure they use disposable sets, so the same one is never used twice. You get complimentary essential oil or vitamin E oil applied to your hands and arms during your massage. Not to mention the girls do my manicure PERFECT every time! They are so sweet and speak very good English (I hope that doesnt come across wrong lol). They serve complimentary greent tea or water and have snacks on hand. Even though I have not had spa services done as of yet, they have a beautiful back area with the rooms for massages and wax services. They do everything from facials to microdermabrasion to mud wraps. Even couples massages! I love this place and even though it is a bit pricier, its completely worth it with all the extras they do. read more

This salon is super expensive compares to others. Their gel extensions lasts 2 weeks compared to a home based that could last over 3 weeks. Its just not worth it and a lot of times the workers talk in chinese saying the word "annoying." There is a worker there name Cindy (I know her name because another worker called for her) who was very rude to an old lady while doing pedicure (scrubbing too hard as the lady asked to not and Cindy continued. Also a very short and aggressive massage compared to normal clients). it broke my heart to see the old lady walk out of the salon with dissapointment and sadness as she was too kind to not say anything. I don't really understand the bad ratings! I really love this nail salon. I get powder gel approximately every two weeks. They last the longest than any other place in the city, and I have been to a lot of nail salons. The only reason I even get them done every two weeks is because I am OCD and do not like seeing my nails growing at the bottom, but if you do not mind you could probably get 3, maybe even 4 weeks. Wow, I usually don't do the whole spa/mani/pedi thing because I generally find it to be more stressful than relaxing- well, this place is great and has changed my mind about all that! This place has no heavy smells from the nail work being done and they have custom print options and Asian nail art available. They gave me a nice little massage on my legs and also upper back with even a basic pedicure. They are friendly here and on point with their work. Mostly regulars here. I've come into the salon a few times now for manicures, pedicures, and gel manicures. The manicures have gloves with hydrating lotion that they put on while they cut the cuticles, which is great for my hands in the winter months. The gel manicure took a little longer than expected, but the results were pristine. I've never had such a meticulous gel manicure and it lasted for weeks! Plus, I've gotten a different person every time I come in, and had consistent results. There is a small fee for using credit, so I'd bring cash. I highly recommend this salon. read more

Neither particularly fastidious nor satisfying. Pricing is sketchy and they offer deals but don't tell you that you have a pay cash for the deal. Watch out for these offers and pay attention because the "ten minute massage" is neither a massage nor ten minutes. They mischarged multiple people while I was there and then ran cards again or asked for cash to correct the balance. Dont waste your time. There are many better options in the area. read more

Although I am not a frequent monthly visitor, I've been coming here for at least about 5 years and usually visit several times in a year. Some girls do a better job than others over the years and the girls definitely are young usually and change at times. It's all about your luck and who you happen to get. PROS: The owner is always inviting, social and nice which I like (1 star). The amenities and the fact that it's never overly crowded is a plus (Another star). Lastly, good location and always looks clean (3rd start given). NOTE: This spa is definitely more costly where it concerns getting a manicure and pedicure. CON: I've been having some distaste about this place in the past year. In the summer last year I definitely spent in the $90s and the job was "meh". then fast forward more recently for the same package its now over $100 per owner quote... Fine, I go along. However, what bothered me was the change in price again( $5-$7 additional dollars) once the work was done and I was paying my bill. Personally I felt a little "had", "robbed", "manipulated" and that wasn't a good feeling for me. I didn't express my feelings because in that moment I was over it. Also tips are only in cash? Really? ... and what topped it off was the person who did my nails. Horrible gel manicure with organic polish and fast dry and still terrible. Lasted 2 days!!! Yes 2 Days!! She struggled the entire time doing my nails so I wasn't entirely shocked by this outcome. She gave a good foot massage though. As a loyal customer. For this, I give 3 stars and take off two stars. If the right chair was not available, I would have been happy to wait or some back another time. Not even worth one star. This is the worst Mani/Pedi I have EVER had. I would never EVER go back here and I recommend you don't either. There was no foot soak, she had me stick my feet in 2 inches of luke warm water for about 30 seconds. I paid extra for the callus treatment and she left my heels and big toe with calluses and weird splotchy skin spots. The exfoliation part consisted of her wiping some exfoliating gel on my legs once and then rinsing it off, why even bother? Oh and the leg massage, what massage? Basically she rubbed some moisturizer on my legs for 10 seconds. She cut my toenails and shaped them but not very well and no buffing so they are jagged. As for the manicure it was just as bad, cold water in the hand soak, shaped my nails okay, but without buffing them they are jagged and don't feel finished. She did a good job on my cuticles but that is about all I can say was good. Again, the massage part was basically just like rubbing a little hand moisturizer on and that was it. I will never go back here. I don't get polish, so my mani/pedi doesn't take as long as others, however in and out in less than 30 minutes for a mani/pedi is incredibly rushed and not worth the money. I go to have my nails done to pamper myself a little bit and to clean up my cuticles and calluses. This experience has left me pissed off and feeling like I need to go have my feet done again. Like I said, don't go here, I will never go back and I wish I could get my money back. Disappointing at best. read more

Better atmosphere than the other spas around. Friendly, attentive staff always remembers me. I get my eyelashes and eyebrows tinted here ($40) about once a month, and it's spot on. The spa services are well priced, but their mani-pedi is not priced competitively with the area (which averages at $20) - that's probably why this place is usually empty. However, I'd much prefer the atmosphere at Shanghai, so it depends on what you feel you're paying for. I'll continue to come for the tinting services and take advantage of their specials like a half-price brazilian wax on Wednesdays. read more

This is my first time trying out this place and I hated it. Will never be going back to this place. I went in there asking for a Spa Pedicure & tips. My pedicure was a mess. I had my nails cut down without asking me! (Mean you it had taken me forever for them to grow in the first place!) and to make matters worse they were cut sideways. When I asked the girl to recut/file them straight she gave me a nasty attitude about it. She insisted that they were done right. My tips were done by an amateur. They knocked out the mani/pedi simultaneously which got me out of there pretty quickly.
