Everything is beautifully plated and the taste is amazing. The potstickers were perfectly crispy and tender. The cheese wontons were our favorite part, light and crispy! Came in to try the restaurant as it is now under new ownership. The reviews seemed worth a visit. The restaurant looks nice and the staff is friendly. We came in just before lunch service ended and they hurried us to order. The our entrees were nicely presented, albeit served within 3-4 minutes of ordering... This was suspiciously fast for what we ordered (obviously pre-prepared and just plated). I asked for spicy beef, and that didn't happen. The beef didn't look like any beef I've ever eaten. It may have been steamed or microwaved, but not seared or even sautéd. The texture and color was not like beef, or any red meat... It tasted rancid, along with the sesame chicken. The chicken was crunchy and dry/flakey on the outside (like it had been under a heat lamp too long) and the inside was mushy... Not exactly textures you would hope chicken to have... Fried rice seemed harmless but lacked flavoring and looked like frozen prepackaged fried rice. We have both been sick since we ate there... Not quite to the level of food poisoning, but nearly there. Overall, I hope this experience was a one off and the food isn't normally as bland or strange looking/texture. This restaurant could be worth it if the food was better prepared. read more

I've been coming here for probably 30 years and it's still one of my favorite spots. I haven't lived in the area for 15+ years and I still stop by and get some sesame chicken every time I'm in the area. I've honestly only really tried three entrees, the sesame chicken, twice cooked pork, and garlic chicken. As well as the fried rice and house chow mein. The noodles are great, I really enjoy them. The fried rice is standard, good not great. The garlic chicken and twice cooked pork are two of my favorite dishes, they do it in their own unique way and I always look forward to them. However, in my opinion, the sesame chicken is the star of the show. It's different than anywhere I've ever had it before, more caramelized, not so gooey or greasy, and just excellent. I find myself craving this dish even though I live hundreds of miles away. Shanghai will always have a special place in my heart. read more

Craving Chinese during this lockdown. Finally found one of the local spots open. We had never been to this place before and wanted to give it a really fair shot so we made a huge order wor wonton soup, general chicken, egg rolls, beef broccoli, pork fried rice and chicken chow mein. First and most importantly the service was fantastic they were very friendly and that's what brought them the third star. The only two items I actually enjoyed where the egg rolls and the general chicken they were both cook very well and had flavor. That being said both the fried rice and chow mein were very Bland and lacked any flavor. The one ton soup had very few wontons and the broth was also flavorless. It tasted like pure chicken broth without any hints of garlic ginger onion or any other spice you would expect and a hearty soup. All of the food was cooked well the portions are generous we were sorely disappointed by the lack of flavor the entire meal was about $60 and was easily enough for three meals. Very nice and if you're already a fan of this place good for you. But you must have not been to China City yet. They're closed for renovations and I can't wait to order from them when they reopen if China City had the same level of customer service that Shanghai did it would be hands down the best restaurant in Cameron Park. read more

The potstickers were doughy, walnut shrimp had too much mayo sauce for our taste, chow mein very light in flavor with doughy noodles and lemon chicken was just ok. Wont be returning. read more

We have been ordering from this restaurant for years and have always had good service and food. Tonight was different. While the service was good, the food was terrible, nearly inedible. I had sesame chicken with white meat. It might have been white meat but there was so much breading I really couldn't decipher if there was any meat at all. My husband ordered his usual sweet and sour chicken. It too was bad. Seemed like it had been sitting there all day; dried out, meat was tough, and barely and vegetables or sauce. We have been customers of Shanghai on and off for many years. Tonight we ordered sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, chow mein and hot and sour soup. Most of it was fairly good and actually we really love their hot and sour soup - more flavorful than other restaurants in our area. My main complaint is the meat used in my so called sesame chicken. Every single morsel was breaded chicken tendons and gristle. All the things I normally would never eat off of a chicken leg or thigh were what made up my sesame chicken. Not one bit of chicken meat - not kidding you. Although I will admit their sauce flavors were great. However, the Mongolian beef and chow mein were fine. But I have to give 2 stars (almost gave 1 ) because there was NO SIGN of chicken meat in my sesame chicken. read more

There was no one eating in the restaurant when we walked in and that made me a little nervous but then I saw the two rows of huge take out orders waiting to be picked up and I felt better. I was slightly she'll shocked by the prices...a lot higher than I am used to paying in the Elk Grove/South Sac area. We have been going to Shanghai for many years now. And over that period of time they have never ceased to give us excellent n courteous service. Their restaurant is very clean n they are very prompt in getting your order to your table or take out as fast as they can ours took 10 min. The portions you will order will be significantly larger than other restaurants as they care about their customers. Someone said they are pricey but I find that you get what you pay for--period! Can't comment on all the menu items since we get the same thing every time: great Wonton soup, sesame chicken, mushu pork. I'm not a big fan of chow mien anyway, so won't argue the knock on that. This restaurant has been around since we moved to the area since 1996. The price is reasonable and the food is good. Over the years, we've had almost everything on their menu. My favorite though is their mu shoo pork and fried rice. Sam the waitress has good memory. She knows exactly what I want when I come in so she just asks me if I want the same thing and off she goes. Ok, so if you are ever on your way up to Tahoe and you feel yourself needing a refuel on the way up, please do not pass up the Cameron Park exit. Make a left and then (after a couple more turns) .. prepare to make love to your meal. It is the best Chinese food, as Debra A says "in three counties." Not kidding. I lived in the Bay Area (Berkeley and SF) and nothing there compares. I heart the coconut shrimp and the sesame chicken, but just about anything you get there is going to be fresh and delicious. Just a word of warning, though, if you're dining in, don't get there too close to closing time as you will feel more like an unexpected (errr unwelcomed) guest. I suggest getting there at least 45 minutes before they close. Otherwise, just get it to go. read more

WHAT?! It's taken this long to review this place?! Just unacceptable. Given that our favorite Chinese restaurant was about an hour away, we decided it's time to find an alternative close by. We were hearing great things about Shanghai and gave it a try. Win! Ding, ding, ding! We ordered veggie fried rice, sesame chicken, beef chow fun, walnut shrimp. Items that really can't go wrong. It can only get better and better. So it did. The fried rice was delicious! Sesame chicken was the perfect size, had a little crispiness. Sauced well (not drowning chicken). The beef chow fun was even better than our regular spot. Sorry... I have to give credit where it's due. The beef was more tender. Heck, you don't even need to chew it! Ha! The noodles were not soggy at all! The walnut shrimp. Sometimes, it can be drowning in sauce, which makes for a limp shrimp. Not here, I tell you. Not here. Plump, juicy shrimp with a light, crisp batter proportionately sauced. Nothing smothered. I'm making myself hungry just telling you about this! The bottom line is, you need to visit this place soon. Maybe on their next business day. Maybe right now (after you read my review). Prices for dishes are in line with other Chinese restaurants. No surprises there. Did I mention the portions are large?!
