My experience with SHANCO was extremely frustrating. We signed the contract in July 2025, and by March 2026 the job was still not completed. I had to constantly follow up and chase them just to make sure work moved forward. Problems happened at every step, including wrong shingles, garbage left on site for weeks, wrong skylights, and a stream of incorrect invoices. In about two weeks alone, I received around eight different invoices, most with wrong numbers. I was also not able to confirm that all contracted work had actually been completed before payment was requested. I worked with Shanco twice in the past year--first to replace my roof (August 2024), then for new Hardi board siding (May 2025). While I was initially happy with the roof work, things unraveled with the siding project. Though I signed the contract in January, the job didn't begin until May, despite repeated emails and calls. No explanation was ever given for the delay. After installation, the siding looked fine to my untrained eye, but a construction-savvy friend pointed out sloppy workmanship: overdriven nails, underdriven nails, and other missed details. Shanco eventually sent their team back to fix some of the issues, which seemed rooted in poor oversight and a disconnect between sales and labor. The larger issue emerged right as the siding work wrapped up--I found mold growing on one of my bedroom ceiling. I suspected this was tied to the roof they'd installed eight months prior. Their siding supervisor told me that there was no active leak from the roof after checking the attic but couldn't determine the cause of the mold. So I hired an independent roof inspector. He uncovered troubling problems with the roof: water-damaged plywood left in place, exposed nails where the mold appeared, shingles with nails installed too close to the shingle transition line, and missing overhangs. While the leak may have existed before the roof replacement, Shanco's installation didn't resolve the underlying issue--and may have made things worse. Again, they sent the subcontractor back to make repairs. My conclusion: some of Shanco's work on both roof and siding was subpar, and I had to chase them to fix mistakes. One final heads-up: Shanco doesn't inspect attics before installing a roof. They include this policy in their contracts, but it's something homeowners should think twice about. I unfortunately cannot speak to this company's workmanship when it comes to roofs, as it took weeks just to get them to complete the water test and another several weeks thereafter to get the report of the water test. When investigating the cause of water stains on the ceiling, which I assumed were due to a bad roof, he climbed into the attic. He saw the AC unit's condensation pan was overflowing. I had Shanco come to cap the wood and replace the gutters on my house 2 years ago. They showed me different types of gutter caps, I chose what they said they had available. They came out to do the work while I was at work myself. When I came home from work, I see a woman in a sundress up on a ladder caulking and a man teaching his 7 year old to caulk around my garage door. Teaching a kid is fine, but NOT ON MY HOUSE. But the real problem, I just went up to spray the pollen off my solar panels and see THE GUTTERS HAVE NO CAP. this is the initial reason to call them in the first place. I wish I had checked before I paid them. Most awful experience I've ever had with a contractor. Project managers didn't check their workers quality or completion of job either. From my first contact with Shanco, the free estimate in September 2023, all communications were friendly and professional. We worked with salesman Dan Haske to learn about all of the options and possibilities as well as a timely estimate. We took a long time to finally determine exactly what we wanted and Dan was very patient and was responsive to all of questions and concerns. Chrissie Bartlett did a wonderful job getting the information we needed to help us make informed decisions. We finally agreed to sign the contract in early December. Saundra Barnhard was very helpful supplying us with a list of the schedule and what expect through this process. Working with Antione Hawkins and his crew was a pleasure. Shanco came out to inspect our roof and give us an estimate on repairing a leak. They checked out to the roof and gave us the cheapest estimate to resolve the issue and preform an additional tune up on the roof on top of that. The roofer came out and did everything in a couple hours with no issues or problems. The one issue we had was that you have to keep checking in with the rep to get the estimate and schedule the roofer to come out. As long as your willing to give them a call every couple days to get the estimate and set the schedule. they are great. read more

Shanco rep knocked on my door. He did not have the required solicitor's license from Fairfax County, and we have a "No Soliciting" sign on our door. He was giving us the BS story that he was not soliciting because he was offering "free estimates." I wonder who trained him to say that? According to Fairfax and Virginia laws, violating soliciting laws carries a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail. I contracted with Shanco to replace my roof in DC. The house is a row house with a flat roof so it's somewhat atypical to the region though not DC. I contacted 8 companies that were recommended by consumer's checkbook and got 5 proposals ranging from $13,000 to $26,000. Shanco was on the lower side and based on their reviews and price I selected them. They were very easy to communicate with from the proposal phase through construction and very responsive which is sadly fairly uncommon these days. I am having solar panels installed and I needed them to coordinate with my solar installer a few things and they didn't let me down. The salesman John and the PM Erik were awesome to work with. The workmen were very professional and showed up on time when they were supposed to. The work is very neat, not sloppy at all and looks first-rate. We had a big storm roll through after they had removed some of the existing roof which drove some rain under a tarp and led to some water infiltration and damage. The foreman came over that night and re-secured the tarp and after the roof was done they repaired the water damage in the ceiling and some other older damage and basically re-finished the entire ceiling. I am in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction industry and take it from me, this kind of service is truly the exception in DC especially when the contractor is the low bidder. Took the day off and got a call 9 am in the morning of the appointment day said they can't come and I need to reschedule. Never got a another call from the company. Shanco was great from start to finish. Barron walked me thru the insurance process and even met the adjuster for inspection. He was very patient with me as I waited for Tesla to remove my solar panels. I had the whole roof replaced, 2 electric opening skylights and 2 stationary skylights all installed in one day. Bruce was the project manager. He and the installers were great. They were easy to talk to and kept a path for me to get my dogs out. All in all, they kept the inconvenience to a minimum and did a fantastic job. They walk around with a magnet sweeper and cleaned everything afterwards. We replaced our roof in October 2020 with Shanco, and were very pleased with the process from start to finish. The initial proposal was very detailed, which we appreciated vs other roof estimates. The contract process was therefore easy, and the entire process went exactly as we were told. The actual replacement took 2 days and clean up was done well. Shanco even took responsibility for a broken walkway fixture and made sure it was fixed before sending a final bill. I was also impressed with how responsive (and nice) they were to my questions. I recommend this company for roof replacement. They were timely and responsive when I requested a bid, and knew I was getting multiple bids for a major project (that I was paying myself -- not insurance). They used the latest technology to estimate the square footage of my roof so they could give me a fair and accurate bid. They didn't have the lowest bid, but they weren't the highest, either. It was their honest, concise, and direct explanation w/o a lot of "upsell" that caused me to select them. Scheduling the work was efficient and rather fast with the roof replacement completed within a couple weeks of signing the contract and paying 1/3 deposit. The size of the crew was appropriate so the work could be done in one day. The entire crew was respectful to me and my property, taking care to protect my shrubs and the house itself. They were exceptionally careful to clean up throughout the day, and I found only one nail on my lawn a couple days later. The work would have been completed in one day had they not under ordered materials (a little bit), but they were able to complete the job in 20 minutes the next morning. Overall -- Shanco was efficient, respectful, and performed a high quality job. I recommend them to others who are looking for a high-quality new roof. read more

Overall, Shanco did a great job with replacing my roof. I only have a few issues in which I wasn't totally satisfied but overall, the quality of the work was great. My first issue is the sales rep. Desmond. He was very pushy, specifically when I was reviewing the contract with my attorney. I had to tell him multiple times my contract was being reviewed and I will let him know once it was done. He also pressured me to contact my insurance company with him standing beside me. That was unnecessary. Secondly, I asked the project manager, Alejandro, to let me know BEFORE replacing the plywood and show me pictures before replacing so I could determine if they needed to be replaced. That didn't happen and I didn't get pictures until the job was complete. My third issue was after the job was complete the project manager and sales rep, Desmond, told me they were charging me for double layer of shingles. I told them I wasn't paying for that because the contract stated in its quote To me "removal of shingles down to the wood deck". It didn't specify how many layers of shingles. They eventually got my insurance to agree to pay for that which is fine but the fact they tried to tack that on to my invoice was annoying. Other than that, they were fine. Quality of work was good: just be weary of pushy sales rep and make sure they do what they say (I.e. show pictures BEFORE replacing plywood). One more thing: while it may be a free estimate, it's only a free estimate if you sign a contract saying if the insurance company accepts the claim you will use Shanco. I didn't mind that as I searched reviews prior but maybe some people don't want that so fyi. read more

I highly recommend. Completely professional. Last year after a big wind storm, I had to have my roof completely replaced. Several companies came knocking on my door, making all sorts of promises and guarantees but nothing was provided to me in writing. Btw, please protect yourself and stay away from those companies. Then a neighbor told me about her experience with Shanco Companies. I find the best references are by word of mouth! I gave Shanco a call and when they arrived, they had all the materials on hand for me to see and ask questions. Within an hour after our meeting, I was emailed a complete proposal with all materials listed and costs broken down. The company is honest and does not up sell. I would use them again and highly recommend them. The company is family owned and operated and it shows in their staff. Whenever I call or need assistance, everyone is very friendly and helpful. I don't usually write online reviews because I believe great companies succeed by their own merits and Shanco certainly does, but there are so many unscrupulous roofing companies out there, even ones who show five stars, whose reviews are many times solicited and paid with discounts. Really enjoyed working with Shanco. When I knew my roof needed to be replaced, I called a few companies to see if I could get quotes thinking that I would need to pay out of pocket for my roof replacement. Most companies just took a look from the outside and gave me a quote, but Shanco went above and beyond, which is a big factor in why I went with them. After I called for a quote, Morgan King showed up at my door and was really professional, strait forward, and easy going. Morgan went up on my roof, took a look around, showed me pictures, and advised that I should contact my insurance company to evaluated if the wind damage qualified for a full roof replacement. My insurance company assessed it qualified and covered for a full replacement. If it wasn't for Morgan and the thorough work he did, I would have ended up paying way more for something that I had no idea was covered. I also went with them to replace the gutters and all went smoothly there. I would recommend to a friend, but the one downfall that I had in my experience was that after the roof was installed, the cleanup was not up to my standards, I ended up cleaning up some of the debris and nails that were on my deck and front yard. I hadn't realized until after the crew had left. I would have also appreciated if the installation crew manager looked over the work with me before his crew left for the day, but to me, those were minor issues. They met with me to look at my roof, but after several phone calls and their assurance that someone would return my phone calls, I have yet to receive an estimate to do the work I need to have done. The quality of work is good and the roof replacement was practically completed in one day because they combined multiple crews to do the work. The only disappointment that we had was the long delay to replace our roof because of wind damage occurring to many other homes in the Maryland area. We had to wait at least four months before the work could be done. I realize that it rained a lot of times too; which delayed the work even longer. The project managers were friendly and helpful. Shanco was incredible to work with from beginning to end. We got a new roof as well as new gutters with leaf guards. They were not only very affordable, but every single employee went over and above to assist us every step of the way. We were able to finance our roof through a lender that Shanco works with - we debated financing through our bank but Shanco's company was much easier to work with and equally affordable. After signing the roof contract, we decided to add a roof vent in order to add a bathroom exhaust fan. They comped us the part so that we would not need the hassle of redoing the contract. They do a thorough cleanup of the area and have a supervisor come out afterwards to walk the property with us and ensure we were satisfied. A piece of siding near the roof had blown partly off in the recent windstorm and the supervisor went to Home Depot, got siding nails, and tacked it back down (he insisted) bc he didn't want it to mar the appearance of their finished roof. Shanco is truly an ethical and outstanding company and extremely well priced. I cannot recommend them highly enough. read more
