Extra Space Storage

I've used storage spaces around town before but this is my new favorite. I didn't know I had a…read morefavorite until I talked to Joshua and met Matt. Two great folks and I felt like they cared. Every other place felt like the manager found an easy job in exchange for a free apartment on site. Anyway. Filling this one up quickly. I'll probably get another here. Also - best price in the area that I could find.

I wanted to share my experience talking to this facility. A family member has a storage unit at…read moreanother company. 3 months after they moved in, the rate nearly doubled. With this in mind I called this facility for my own storage needs to ask about rates and if it might also go up after several months or if the price was reliable long term. At first the woman I spoke seemed very professional and knowledgeable. But she began to give me the run around. Not only do their prices change seasonally, they can't tell you how much a unit will cost more than 10 days in advance because they do dynamic pricing (lots of units available = cheaper). I understand this approach to pricing but it was as if she was doing her very best not to admit it by giving me long, unnecessarily complicated explanations and repeating herself rather than saying it simply, as I just did for this review. I moved on to another question. Is there an option for committing for a longer period of time (ie: 1 year) for a better rate or to guarantee the same price every month? While she mentioned that we are welcome to prepay for a year, she would not directly say if this was or not a possibility to guarantee our rate for any period of time. Then she went back into describing dynamic pricing again. Either she is the worst communicator in the world, or she was trying to avoid having to say, "no, there's no way to guarantee your rent will not go up after you move in. She also alluded to it all comes down to what I might be able to "negotiate with the manager." Sounds like trying to buy a car! I finally gave up when it was clear she was never going to give me a straight answer.

Neither Public Storage staff nor their website made attempts prior to my arrival to inform me of their lock requirements. Unless you've rented from this company in the past, during which time they employed the use of a cylinder style lock, prepare yourself in advance to spend an extra $20 to purchase a lock. Their first month's rent special of $1 on select units quickly climbs to ~$50 (first month's payment) once they add the price of the lock and the one-time $24 admin fee. Questionable up-sell tactics aside, the staff is friendly and accommodating. Public Storage administrators: A reasonable level of transparency with prospective tenants could prove more favorable for you in the longer-term than will bait-and-switch tactics.

My uncle also had units at this particular site for many years before too(until he switched to because it would be cheaper for him). Idk what the F*** is going on with this location this past year or so but they're really on some shit lately. In summer 2023 I moved my stuff to a much bigger unit than the tiny one that was intended to just be for a week or two in early 2020 until all the covid lockdowns started. And just like units I'd had with PS before, they increased my rent like $20/year, once a year, but at least it was consistently the same $ amount and again, just once a year. The repeated price increases is a big part of why I decided to go ahead and move my stuff to a bigger more cost effective unit, since the one that had started at less than $60/mo at the end of Feb 2020, was now costing $130/mo after the 2023 increase. Other reasons where that I just wanted and needed more space since my storage unit need had become more of a long term than originally intended when I packed the previous unit Tetris-style(floor to ceiling, wall to wall) just to utilize the smallest most cost effective unit at the time since it was meant to be very temporary, and now I wanted more space so my things could actually be accessible while being stored. The much bigger unit I found was only $40 more per month, $176, but significantly more space for the money. And there wasn't like some listed/stated deal about the price only being that pricing for a limited time like was the case for a couple others units(which is why I didn't choose those even if cheaper initially), so I was only expecting the usual annual increases. Fit my needs perfectly! Got everything moved from one unit to the other, and was very happy, and again, this was like June 2023. Now one thing I need to mention is that ever since the experience with getting switched to this newer unit at this same PS location, I learned that apparently they don't even keep the office open most of the time anymore. You have to call and arrange for them to be open before u can go there, and this didn't seem to be the case with another location nearby at the time. I found this odd since there's still a person living on-site 24/7 that's employed/working there, but aside from whatever other duties they can't have the office open between doing them? I bring this up because if the office isn't open then no one is in there during normal business hours to answer and return phone calls. Thats how I learned that a nearby PS location still does keep their office open because I ended up calling them instead just to get in communication with "my" location to get the ball rolling to get this new unit since I was having trouble getting in contact with "my"/this location. Ok, so by Nov 2023 I already got notified of my first price increase, and was basically the usual $20ish, from $176/'o to $208/mo like ok, no big deal, and I knew to then expect it again about the same time next year(previously the increases on my previous unit were in the spring). Then, come April 2024, right after I'd JUST had to move to a new home unexpectedly at the start of that month(so extra frustrating), I get another price increase notification that starting May 2024 my rent would be jumping up another $80!!! Like wtf?! I had NEVER experienced this with this storage company before in the nearly 20yrs of me renting units with them off and on. So now the unit I got at $176/months was now $285/mo in less than a year!! So I tried calling to find out if it was legit, if there was some sort of mistake or just what the reason was(if any), but of course that was a pain in itself to just get ahold of someone there. I'm pretty sure I ended up calling the other nearby location to have them notify "my" location to call me back since they hadn't after I left a couple or voicemails over a couple weeks(I try to be patient). Finally got a call back from the lady at this 44th St location but she wasn't able to really give me any answers at all or do anything about it. Fine, surely they won't increase it more for a while, I thought... I thought wrong, very wrong. By January of this year, 2025, I received another notification about them increasing my rent rate yet again. A $60 increase this time!! $344/mo starting Feb 1st!! So, in less than 1.5yrs, in barely over a year's time(like 14 months...) my rent has essentially DOUBLED in cost, and for what?!?!? First thing I did was went on their website to see if they're just jacking up all their prices, but no, they're all basically about the same prices as they were in 2023 when I got this unit. Same size unit as mine at this same location, listed at less than $200/mo. So why the fuck am I being charged nearly $350?!? (It's cutting off the rest of my review, but it's in the screenshots...)

U-Haul at Metcalf

U-Haul at Metcalf

(46 reviews)

There's a lot to unpack here (pun intended) so bear with me…read more Let's start with the actual facility. First of all I'd like to point out that there are two buildings that say U-Haul off of Metcalf which if you aren't frequenting this location, and let's be real, who really frequents a U-Haul facility? it can be pretty confusing. I, of course, picked wrong but it was pretty obvious when I drove by and I changed course for the other building marked U-Haul just down the road. When you get here there is very little parking, no signage on where to park if you are renting a car for the day, and U-Hauls everywhere. When you walk in it feels like a warehouse, full of packing materials for purchase and counters with folks ready to help you with your rental. I waited very briefly in line to check in and the person behind the counter was really very helpful and kind. He checked me into the reservation I made online, told me I needed to move my car to the side streets to park for the day, and told me where to find my U-Haul. Overall this process was easy, I'd say it was a bit unnerving when I walked out to my U-Haul to just hop in and drive off without any confirmation I was in the right vehicle, but it seems it all worked out since this was a month ago and I'm here writing this review today. It honestly would be nice if they would walk you out and show you which one is yours instead of just kind of using the trust method. When I was done for the day it was super easy, I parked the U-Haul, popped inside to return the key and they billed me. It was exactly what we had discussed and it all worked out fine. If the whole experience was just surrounding the folks working at U-Haul and the check-in/ check-out process this would be probably 4 stars, but we need to address the actual U-Haul trucks. So to be honest I've never driven a U-Haul before. I know, I know, you may be asking how do you get to be in your middle thirties without having experienced this right of passage? Well, with every cross country move I was the person driving the car we were transporting and not the truck! So, I just went into this not knowing what to expect. I thought maybe it would be sort of on par with a rental car? Not the case. The U-Haul I had made me feel like I was taking my life into my own hands as it rattled down the highway, even going slower it legitimately felt like it might just peeter out and fall apart at any given moment. The steering wheel had what was left of some sort of pleather peeling off of it, everything looked like it had seen better days back in the early aughts, and I was relieved when the whole endeavor was over. Now, I'm not expecting some sort of luxury experience when renting a U-Haul and this was only for about 6 hours so it wasn't horrible, but my god, this was not pleasant. I don't know how often U-Haul updates their vehicles but you'd think they would take more customer safety into mind as they update their fleet. Just my two cents! I'm sure it won't be my last time using U-Haul, but if I was travelling across country I might see what other companies are out there that have safer vehicles.
