I went here because I had such a good time at a SHake's in Arkansas and I wanted to re-create that experience. I didn't realize they were kinda a chain. However the menus are a little different. This place gives off the vibe of a struggling family business but that is a bummer because the product is still really good. Happy to support them! read more

Everything about this place was a complete nightmare. We waited for 5-10 minutes at the order kiosk without anyone coming to the window, despite no other customers around. Immediately after taking the order and serving they went back to their back offices. The sundae was absurdly overpriced, with a tiny trickle of fudge sauce only on top. Also the custard came already melted. It was as if the guy had never made a sundae before. Super strange interaction to order and very hard to read menu. Could only eat 1/3 the sundae because it was soup. And I am not generally a hard critic at all. read more

I love the ice cream here but can't understand why they charge more tax than the 8.25% rate when you order before any tip. Second time this happened. The charge for a small sundae is $6.38. They charge 7.10 with tax. The 8.25% tax rate would make it 6.91. The 19 cents is no big deal but still can't understand why they can't charge the proper tax rate or raise the menu price to equal the price charged. After awhile it adds up. read more

Shakes and slurries are sooo good. Service is sort of a one man show but they're nice and they get it done. Went in the middle of the week in the afternoon which I don't recommend as a lot of the nearby school kids loiter there. Unless you're a school kid and then probably you'd have fun. read more

This is a north Austin gem that is not talked about often, but we only went because one of our friends grew up going to it. I thoroughly enjoyed the custard. Their standard (no frills) options were the best. You can also get them by the pint which is great as well. There is only outdoor seating, but the seating area is cute with string lights and picnic tables. They definitely are trying to accommodate. We didn't do the drive through, but I imagine at the speed we got ours that the drive through would be pretty fast as well. Inside a shopping complex so ample parking all around. It is close by a couple of schools so I imagine the school rush would be pretty busy. read more

It's pretty good custard and let's be honest it's what you'd expect. Staff is normally pretty friendly and it's generally quick. They have a broad assortment: shakes, malts, cakes, sundaes, concretes, floats, freezes, cookies etc. We have had them all and they are really good. So why the 3 stars? The surrounding area is always dirty and sticky. A hundred yards or so from their location is a park like area off Cypress Creek with a few benches and 2 huge Live Oak trees. That area is always heavily littered with white styrofoam cups and pizza boxes. I would say the majority of the litter is from Shakes. While that parklike area is not their property and I don't think it's part of Milburn park, I would think they and Dominos could do a better job ensuring that area is free of litter. read more

I'm not supposed to have sweets but it was super hot and my Air Conditioning was broken. I need some coldness to chill me down. There were two young boys in front of me. My request was a small cup of chocolate with hot fudge. Hey! Don't judge me. I paid for it then waited for the cup to be given to me. I notice the boys went to the second window to get their slushies. Mine is ready and the girl brought it to the second window too!?! Okay, she is the only employee and I the only customer but she followed the rules. Order in window A and Pick up in window B. I bring my treasure to my car. I couldn't resist and took a spoonful. Oh My goodness, this is so good. It was only 5 minutes until I got home but I couldn't stop thinking about the next mouthful. It was chocolatey deliciousness. The custard always melts within one minute of receiving a concrete, which is the epitome of unacceptable. My wife and I tried this place for the first time tonight(6/17), I love frozen custard and was excited to support local. If i was leaving this review for just my concrete I would have given it 4/5 stars, i ordered a strawberry unfortunately my wife's concrete wasn't right. I ordered a strawberry cheesecake concrete and my wife ordered a mint oreo concrete. Her concrete was missing the mint. I really have mostly criticisms. Maybe if I hadn't been to Andy's Frozen Custard that wouldn't be so. Check it out for yourself, but these are my notes. No brownie, cookie, or strawberry shortcake sundaes. The hot fudge is okay, but the caramel sauce is more like butterscotch. Vanilla flavor is extremely eggy--yes, I understand that is how custard is, but this is potent. I suggest getting the chocolate. Shakes are made with partially melted custard, as opposed to blended, this may be how it is done with custard, but I don't care for the warm shakes I have been served there. I do like the cookie dough--a lot. Although it is not my favorite, Shakes is a great neighborhood throw-back custard stand. I wish there more more old-school places like this. But I recommend taking your business to Andy's Frozen Custard, if this is a calorie splurge, and not merely a super quick trip to the closest place. read more

I have never had a bad experience with Shakes. They're always really friendly and offer some of the best ice cream around. My favorite concoction I always try to get is the Fudge brownie concrete with chocolate ice cream and extra fudge. It's a sugar rush for sure but holy cow is it good! Please be aware that this is Frozen Custard and not traditional ice cream and some people may not like that. Just giving yall a heads up. read more

I have loved Shakes for years but lately their staff has been on the lazy side. The last 2 visits my sons chocolate milkshake is soupy. Closer to plain chocolate milk. Today I ordered a strawberry, banana, coconut, pecan concrete and it was basically vanilla ice cream with the random speck of toppings. In addition. We arrived one night at 9:56pm. Closing time is 10pm. I know we were cutting it close. There were only 2 of us. The kids working said their registers were already shut off. Ridiculous, it's been literally 25 minutes in the drive thru waiting, we get to the front window and are informed they no longer sell pints but can sell a quarter pint but need 20 minutes...wtf? CUSTOMER SERVICE Their ice cream is great! Or at least was. I can't go here and continue to support poor customer service. I haven't been many places that put a damper on your mood just from a drive through, and this place does that. Every time I've been except once, the employees working have been sassy and inattentive. One time even opening the window and just staring- not saying "what can I get you?" (Even before covid times) but this time I figured I'd write a review, in hopes of the manager or owner training their staff better. I asked for something on top of my concrete, and this girl at the window turned to another girl next to her and said "she wants it on top" to which the other red head girl rolls her eyes and says "Not mixed in?" I don't know why that was such a struggle. Immediately after my concrete was handed to me, the girl walks two feet away from the window and starts texting. They don't wear gloves, and I highly doubt they wash their hands every time after touching their phones. Plus the concrete was already melting by the time it was in my hands. read more
