Note: This Review is SOLELY on their Milkshake. I have not yet eaten any of their food, hence I cannot give 5 stars. The milkshake DOES deserve 5 stars. I will update when I've eaten the delicious smelling and looking food.
I've been super excited to try this place because, let's face it, I love me some freaking milkshakes and Boston is lacking in the offerings of a decent milkshake. A good milkshake can be a meal in itself, and Shake Shack did not disappoint.
I was pleased to see they served beer, and had a large selection of food that I'm looking forward to coming back to try. I'm not surprised about the long lines, mostly as I've heard tell of hour plus line waiting in NYC from close comrades. I chose my timing well: about 12:45pm on a weekday afternoon. Most of the lunch crowd was nomming and finishing up. There was a short wait, maybe 5-7 minutes? I prepared myself by checking out the menu posted to the window outside before I went in, because I'm just not the type to hold up the line because I want to hem and haw. All of the staff seemed very nice and courteous, though a bit exhausted-- and having worked in food service and knowing just how busy this place has been--I'm not surprised they're tired. Their patience with clients who walk in without having read the menu and explaining their offerings is astounding (I'm looking at you, older ladies who were in front of me in line-- this isn't Mickey D's).
Pro tip: if you want good service, treat the staff with the same courtesy that you would want to be treated with. This is a universal rule everywhere, but exceptionally true with food & customer service industries.
After empathizing thoroughly with the cashiers as they took the orders of the people in front of me, I was able to place my order for my delicious milkshake-- one size (short cup but a goodly circumference to make up for it). I was giddy with excitement they offered a peanut butter option and a malt add on, so I got just that. They gave me a buzzer to let me know when my food was ready for pick up and I went to the bathroom (wonderfully clean!!). To my surprise, my shake was done super quickly. Grabbed it, and headed back upstairs to attempt to find a spot to sit down and enjoy my shake. There was not a seat to be had, but after politely saying excuse me several times to the older ladies who had previously been in front of me in line, angry there was no place to sit and therefore blocking the entire top of the stairs, I nabbed a small section of a couch and got to people watch in the heart of Harvard Square in the light snow flurries while sipping on the ambrosia of the gods, an excellently made, malted peanut butter milkshake. I was a little surprised to see the "contains nuts/allergen warning" label on my shake because, well, DUH it has peanut butter in it, but given the rest of the clientele there... I'm sure it is a necessary thing. In the future I'll probably do take out instead of eating in, mostly because there is a lot more traffic than their seating area can accommodate. Which is pretty much every fast food place ever, and therefore not surprising at all.
I'm sure the spring and summer will be glorious when we can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air with our delicious Shake Shack orders. I'm looking forward to going back for more milkshakes, and trying their food! read more
