Ciao! I'm not a pastry expert by any means, but am fortunate enough to be able to consume quite a bit of it throughout my days. The first thing I taste with any cake is *freshness*. Before any flavor profile or trendy icing fondant whatever messes with my taste buds, this is usually my all-important first impression. I guess it's a combination of moistness and that just-right sponginess that good cakes have. Mix in a bit of layering to give the cake a bit of dynamics, and I'm a happy guy. If these criteria are met, I'm a happy, easy-to-please cake inhaler. Recently tried a HUGE piece of Shakar's "Chocolate Dulce De Leche". Maybe 50000 calories worth. First thing, as mentioned, was freshness, spot on, and already with a great first impression. Next, there was some bit of choco-sauce veneer in between the two chocolate pieces. Not sure what exactly was going on, but it offered just enough change-up to make the cake delicious and enjoyable to eat. The cakes are pricey, sure, but there's a level of quality for me that's along the lines of "shut up and take my money". If it's this good, who cares? And i've had cakes at places (Alcove!) that cost a ridiculous amount and have been totally let down. Shakar is a welcome change. So many good things to say about Shakar Bakery and Shantal the owner/baker. Shantal made an amazing 3 layer cake for my fiance and his sister's birthday 10/2012- Nightmare Before Christmas-themed vanilla cake with chocolate ganache and top layer pumpkin flavor muffin/cupcake with cinnamon frosting. After a lot of back and forth messaging (due to picky eaters and ever-changing ideas for the look of the cake and event date- she was so understanding, patient, and easy to work with) we ended up with the most delicious, moist cake made with free-range eggs and grass-fed cow milk and butter. Shantal was so accommodating to my fiance's request that the cake not have very much fondant on top, that she re-designed the cake to figure out how to keep it moist while still using the smallest amount of fondant. However, after tasting the fondant she had used for decorating, it was so delicious, we wished there had been more! Note to self for next time, definitely go with her suggestions. I was so happy communicating with her throughout the design process and eating the final cake- YUM! Everyone at the party loved the cake and my fiance really enjoyed having his own personal pumpkin muffin on top. For my bridal shower 3/2013 Shakar Bakery set up a sweet table (in collaboration with Paper&Fondant for the decorations). Once, again, I was so very impressed with Shakar Bakery- the sweet table went so so perfectly with the orange and white theme of the shower. I was also able to pick up the cellophane bags from Shantal ahead of time so I could add personalized stickers to them. I'm so glad I ordered extra candies and chocolate covered oreos- there was pretty much nothing left of the candies and oreos by the end of the shower. Success! Finally, I went back to Shakar Bakery once again in 9/2013, this time for cupcakes for my fiance's birthday. Once again, flavor and presentation went above and beyond our expectations- flavors I ordered were: Chocolate Dulce De Leche, Red Velvet, Classic Chocolate, Orange Blossom, Peanut Butter, and Dark Chocolate Guinness. I would like to tell everyone how absolutely delicious the Father's Day Cupcakes were. I will admit that sadly my FATHER DID NOT get any! Shakar Bakery is absolutely magnificent. Shantal went out of her way to design our cake but also to change the design and take all my panic phone calls about if the cake will feed approx 100 people. My order was originally for 50 guests and as we got closer to our event it grew to be 97 guests. I was in a panic mode. She was honest and insisted on not adding any additional layered. She explained how the reception should cut the pieces and insisted on trusting her. Since she's been so upfront with me, patient and no hidden charges, not turning me away every time I was in panic I was skeptical but I decided to trust her. Voila not only all 97 guests had a nice portion piece of cake but I also had leftover to bring home. Shantal was correct. I had to please all 97 guests, so I went around each table and asked for feedback on the cake: "awesome", "Delicious", "Yum Yum", "Good Cake", "I don't care for Chocolate", "Dark Chocolate oh well", "taste", "so goooddd", "ahh great cake", " is this cake home made?", "not soft enough", " too much dark chocolate", "this cake is my favorite", "Is this cake for real?" What I learned that I cannot please everyone. The one who didn't like the flavor of the cake they would not liked anything else anyway so there opinion doesn't matter. My personal experience with the cake, as I have a sweet tooth, and I tend to go "crazy Hyper", when I eat sweets.....to my surprise NO SUGAR HIVES. On my way back home from the reception at about midnight the freeway was bumper to bumper and thanks God for the left over, I was digging in it and had some more cake. A Fantastic Cake. I am happy to say that I can finally give Shakar Bakery my long awaited 5 star review! I recently had my baby shower for about 160 people and asked Shantal to do the entire dessert table. Not only did she create a wonderful cake that matched the shower's woodland theme, but also cute and delicious cake pops, each a different woodland character made to perfection, as well as woodland themed chocolate covered oreo cookies. She definitely surpassed all expectations! For the cakes I had a special request of carrot cake and a lighter vanilla cake with lemon frosting. For inspiration, I gave her a bottle of my favorite lemon creme lotion to match the flavor. Not only were both cakes decadent, but that was the best carrot cake I ever had and the lemon meringue frosting was dead on.
