Instead, I received blobby buttercream flowers with squiggly green lines. I almost turned the cake around at the reception. I reached out to Butter End and I received a "Sorry we missed the mark in your eyes". No... the cake I received resembled nothing like what I had asked for. I have no idea how they messed so badly and I'm equally confused by the glowing reviews. I wasn't going to post a negative review but their response was dismissive and took no responsibility. I paid $2,300 for this presentation. Tastes good, but very sloppy presentation. I expected perfection at the price I was charged. Very disappointed and not impressed . The owner called me and explained her theory of the cake sloppiness. I gave her plenty opportunities to explain as we went back and forth over the phone. She blamed the florist which she didn't make any strong attempts to reach out and communicate with. I politely suggested to her that she might want to express her expectations from the florists in the future as anything they do to the cake is a reflection of her business. She then insulted me and my family by saying we should have hired a wedding planner to oversee these obstacles in a wedding. At that point she made the mistake of blaming me, the customer. Big mistake. She complained of me hanging up....of course I will hang up on her as she is so immature to blame me and my family for her carelessness.....then cries about it on Yelp. I had done business with a very selfish woman. I regret giving her a 2 star. This business is hardly a one star. I did my part and paid what she asked. She didn't even come close to delivering what I paid. I was robbed of this beautiful day for my sister-in-laws wedding ....and was not compensated a dime for the outcome. It has been 10 years since our wedding and I am still getting comments about how amazingly beautiful and delicious our wedding cake was. It was a 3 tiered small beautiful and delicious hand painted cake with flowers painted in black. Each of our 90 guests received his/her own individual sized hand painted replica of the larger cake. Oh my great buttery goodness, this place is the absolute best. I really didn't know what to expect when looking around for Wedding Cakes, and I just so happened to stumble across The Butter End on one of those 'Top 10' lists on the internet. I was quite impressed by their cakes, made an appointment, and met Kimberly who is the most down-to-Earth woman you can meet. Seeing as how I didn't know what to look for a wedding cake, it sorta transferred to the vision of the cake. My (now) Husband and I had a vague idea of something "vaudeville," something that would bring those beautiful 20th Century French Posters to life. We essentially gave her free reign to play around with this theme, and the result literally blew every single person at my wedding away. The wedding cake was a vision of Midnight Blue, with a fiery french dancer gracefully placed in the front, golden grapes and leaves strategically placed to bring the cake to life. From the moment we sat down with Kimberly for a cake tasting for our wedding, we had a great connection. She was incredibly friendly and open and excited to work with us. She even captured the attention of our 10 yr old, sharing her drawing utensils and including her in every step of the process. The cakes all tasted AMAZING so it was really hard to pick what we wanted to go with from a flavor perspective. Ultimately we settled on Chocolate Almond Cherry along with the Almond for the cake and then we supplemented with mini-cupcakes in a bunch of flavors. Everyone RAVED about the cake and the cupcakes. The father of the groom even declared it was the best cake he ever had, and he is not prone to hyperbole, not to mention incredibly hard to please. What a beautiful end product! The Butter End has an amazing reputation. When we were planning our wedding in LA, we knew we wanted to have them design our cake. We set up an appointment and went and did a tasting. We dealt with Sara via phone/email and she was delightful. They are tucked away in a little shop that is hard to see from the main avenue, but once inside their shop its such a fun experience. They had a some amazing flavor to choose from. The tasting was very professional and it was so great to see some of the cakes they had on display. After selecting our cake flavor, we then dealt with the cake artist (believe it was Kimberly). While she turned out an amazing product (see yelp review for photo of our cake), she was not the most pleasant person to deal with while discussing the design of our wedding cake (seemed aloof, unexcited, and haughty... weirdly kept mentioning how lucky we were to have booked them) . The most amazing cake ....Kimberly is amazing. My son and his bride were married in Chenai, India in February 2012 in an awesome traditional Hindu ceremony. We wanted to create the same atmosphere of love and unity as the East met the West. I sent Kimberly pictures of the wedding in India and after a few emails, my mom and I went to visit Kimberly in Santa Monica for a cake tasting. The cake tasting was fun, organized and delicious...the carrot cake was a WOW! The she took all of our thoughts and ideas and sketched a design; it was perfect. When the cake arrived at the venue, it was breathtakingly beautiful. One of our guest said, "it looks like a sunset" and our guest on skypeconference in India said, "it was the icing on the cake" literally. Kimberly is a wonderful artist. She hand sculpted a Genasha on the top of the cake out of modeling chocolate. It is amazing and will last for years to come. Then we cut the cake and WOW! The rolled chocolate was really good. That's right NO FONDIT.....the bottom layer was to die for carrot cake and the top was rich and yummy chocolate chip chocolate. Something for everyone. It is a good thing we ordered a back up 9" carrot cake. We did not have any cake left. Several people came back for seconds and took cake home. 4.5 stars. Process from ordering to the design phase to the event itself was pretty easy. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I ordered a cake for my son's 3rd birthday party and they suggested the chocolate chocolate chip with vanilla buttercream, which was delicious (albeit really sweet!). The design was perfect as well (I asked to match my son's invitations). The only negatives were (which account for the half-star deduction): - they said they didn't put their cakes in boxes, which I wasn't made aware of. They improvised when my friend picked the cake up by herself but they used a random carton box and not a white cake box. I'm not sure if my theory is correct but i think the carton may have affected the outer cake layer. I know they don't use fondant and reviews say they use chocolate, but I couldn't eat the outer layer due to the taste (which tasted like carton/newspaper). - as with all cake places, they overestimate the amount of cake you will need so make sure you take this into account. Every year, I have ordered my son's cakes from different bakeries and every year, I am left with a huge amount of cake. People don't really eat large slices of cake (really more like a sliver), so this year, for 30 people, the two-tier cake was just overboard. We basically ate just the top tier (and a teeny portion of the bottom layer). I gave 3/4 of the bottom layer to my nanny and we still have some leftover three days after the party. Next time, I will order by size and not by number of people. Despite the two negatives described, this was still a really good experience for me and I would recommend them to everyone. read more

It was not on the level of class and sophistication of the entire rest of the wedding. I reviewed every cake on your site in an effort to figure out what happened. It appears only one of your cakes has frosting flowers. All the rest are either real or paper flowers. I think the basic issue is that you oversold yourself. You do not have the necessary skill set to do beautiful frosting flowers, a basic, rudimentary, traditional aspect of cake decorating. 5 on taste. 1 on design. Average 3 stars. read more

After having the Butter End create a spectacular cake for my wedding, all other cakes seem like a beat up Hyundai next to a Tesla. I had multiple people tell me it was the best wedding cake they ever had. The flavors are unique (coconut passion fruit, chocolate cherry walnut, lemon blueberry) and not your standard bland flavors you see on most cakes. I can not stand frosting that is cloyingly sweet or a gloopy mess. Kimberly's frosting is light and exquisite, perfectly accompanying the fluffy cake. You can taste it in every bite, see it in the gleaming crusty sheen of each monstrous cookie, and if you're anyone except Brittany B you can probably feel it, eventually, in the top button of your pants. But, that's what treadmills are for. Brittany brought us a variety pack of pretzel-caramel-chocolate, bacon-pancake, Snickers, and rocky road cookies, individually wrapped and chunky to the max. Truly, undeniably delicious combos. Far too indulgent for LA...I'd expect cookies like this to come from the midwest, where people like flavor and don't count calories.
