It's my lowest review yet for a Mexican restaurant! I had the combination dinner which came with a tostada, burrito, and a Tamal. The tostada was TERRIBLE! It was so bland! The meat had no flavor whatsoever either! The burrito was good! I asked for chipotle cream sauce on the side for it which I thought was good as well. The Tamal was HORRIBLE! It had no flavor at all! The meat was dry and tasteless! It barely had any green sauce on it, and the little it did had was flavorless! The dinner came with rice and beans which was pretty bad as well! Quite the conflicting experience at Señor Pepper's. On one hand my food was delicious, some of the best Mexican around, on the other, the service was not the best. Had to ask multiple times just to get water and silverware for everyone sitting at the table, and had to ask twice for an extra side. I had a really great experience at Senor Pepper in Red Bank! Located conveniently near the train station, I can't believe I haven't been here sooner given how often I pass by it. The dining room was quiet on a Saturday night, but it seemed like the majority of orders were for takeout. Regardless, the staff was super friendly and attentive. The chips were warm and came with two types of salsas, a green and a red. Both salsas were super fresh and very tasty, with the red salsa having just the right amount of spice. We ordered the Chicken Fajitas and Chicken Burrito Texano. The fajitas were delicious and freshly sizzling out of the kitchen and came with rice, beans, pico de gallo, and sour cream. The portion was huge, and I ended up taking the rest home which will probably be enough for two more meals. The Burrito Texano seems to be super popular and I understand why - the cream sauce was a house specialty and super tasty. Both dishes were reasonably priced and delicious. We were going to theatre down the street, so stopped in. It was merely ok. The food was standard fast-food Mexican and was merely edible. I would probably not go back unless my dining companion really wanted to go. The dining area of the restaurant was quite cold, so I had to keep my winter coat on while I ate. The restaurant is located across the street from the Red Bank train station amongst several other Mexican eateries. What sets Senor Peppers apart from them is that Senor Peppers serves up genuine homestyle Mexican cuisine, whereas it's competitors serve Tex-Mex. Yes, there is a difference Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. The dining area is an open area with nicely spaced tables. The restaurant isn't upscale but is clean and has a homely feel to it. It's got the feel of being in a friends kitchen. Upon taking a seat, the staff will give you a menu and complimentary chips and salsa. For my visit, I ordered the burrito al pastor which is a flour burrito stuffed with rice, beans, cheese, al pastor (grilled marinated pork) and pineapple. I ordered camarones al ajillo. This was seasoned with garlic and old spice. It was tasty but I felt the accompanying salad was too oily. It came with a side of rice and refried beans and 4 warm corn tortillas. The food itself rates three stars. The service was very good. Very attentive and excellent waitress. Hence an extra star. What happened to Senor Peppers? The popularity is there hence the packed dining room. The food was lackluster and on the brink of terrific. First off the service during this Friday rush was slow due to an understaffing issue. 1 person seating everyone and taking orders running food and bussing tables. A second dining room helper running food bussing tables. The front house is a shambles with folks waiting for tables in a line up the center of the place. Put a freaking bench or two outside! People can barely get in to pickup their takeout orders. Get a busboy already! You cannot read the menu! How in the world would you let the printer use such a tiny font? The saddest part was the place is very clean and the tables and chairs are great. The seating is fairly spread so it's really not cramped inside. I've eaten here for years an never got around to a yelp review. Haven't been here for a while but all of the charm and authenticity are there but the food was subpar. The porkchop ranchero had a hit topping over look warm chips one just too dry to eat. The GF got a chicken enchilada dish and that chicken was very over cooked and it wasn't what she expected, (or I for that matter) this came from her not being able to read the description. I must confess I loved and highly recommended this place over all Mexican joints nearby. This visit dropped their ratings in my opinion likely beast in their ability to barely handle the dinner rush. Please go for yourself and see, maybe it was a brought night or it's the new trend of a super popular eatery that had to cut corners to keep up with is huge clientele demands. read more

This is by far the best Mexican food in the area. I've tried Juanitos, Jose Tejas, etc. and NONE compare to this place. Don't expect anything fancy, it's a no-frills, little spot but the food is something special. Literally get anything with the spicy pork. It's the best I've ever tasted. Practically perfect in every way. This place seems so unassuming, maybe a little rundown, just a little place next to the railroad tracks on the sort-of-weird side of town. We'd read that it was the best Mexican food in the area, though, so my boyfriend & I went there for lunch one cold weekend day. The interior is a bit like the exterior - no frills, no muss, just some Mexican yarn tablecloths & a few sombreros on the wall, two TVs blaring American music videos with Spanish advertisements in between, laminated menus with tons of items to choose from. The chips & salsa came out quickly, a basket of crispy tortilla chips with a spicy red salsa & a milder green one - perfect, because I love spicy & my boyfriend hates it, so we each laid claim to one little bowl & chowed down. At our server Juan's suggestion, I ordered Camarones Al Ajillo, jumbo shrimp sauteed with Old Bay, garlic, lime & cilantro atop a salad & with a side of rice, beans, & tortillas to turn them into tacos (which I did). Also at Juan's suggestion (he said it was his favorite), my boyfriend ordered the Burrito Texano, a massive affair smothered in melted cheese & a chipotle sauce. One bite in, I declared, "This is some of the best food I've ever had in my life." I would eat that dish every day if I could, I swear to you. Fresh, light, SO flavorful. My boyfriend loved his, too, though it left him considerably less comfortable post-meal, as his dish was a lot bigger than mine; I felt comfortably full, no need to eat anything else for awhile, but I definitely didn't feel disgusting. And our server! To use a very grandmotherly word, he was just delightful. He was really helpful, really friendly, immediately spotted that it might be our first time there & asked if he could help us at all. He gave us a few kinds of suggestions - his favorites AND customer favorites, four or five in all. And obviously, the suggestions worked out great for us, as we took two of them & loved both. Had the serious Mexican food shakes so I really wanted to try Senor Peppers. Funny that one of the best Mexican restaurants I've eaten at (North of The Border) is within visual sight out the window of Senor Peppers. I ordered the steak Chilaquiles with red sauce and while good it just wasn't as special as the same dish I sampled at North of the Border (same dish my sister had ordered at North of the Border (NOTB), which I had a pretty large portion to try). The steak was chopped into small strips (compared to a whole strip of steak at NOTB) which was fine but it left some pieces a little overcooked and just a little stringy. The red sauce was tasty, but I felt it was a little lighter and thinner compare to the thicker and more tangy NOTB sauce. Rice and beans were tasty, but each were just a bit softer than I like (I prefer my rice and beans with a little stiffer texture). The rest of the Chilaquiles was very good, as the cheese, sour cream, and avocado slices were all fresh and really helped cool the rest of the dish. My sister ordered the Senor Peppers combo of one burrito, one tamale, and one tostada. My sister gave me half of her tamale and it was excellent. It had a nice texture and fresh chicken in it that was well seasoned. Her tostada was crunchy and tasty; all with fresh ingredients which really played well along each other. The burrito was a dense package of veggies, rice, steak, and cheese, which my sister was only able to finish half of. I sampled a good portion of her remaining half and it was good but will leave you feeling pretty heavy/filled. Senor Peppers provided a really good food experience, but if I had to choose a Mexican restaurant to eat in the area......North of the Border would be my choice. read more

I struggled a bit before giving four stars because I'm not a fan of Mexican food, but I tried to see my experience in the point of view of someone who does like Mexican food and that's why I'm giving four stars instead of three. Personally I would give it three or three and a half stars, but if you like Mexican, you'll like this place. My friend and I came here for a late dinner last night and there were maybe six other groups also dining. It's a small place, so maybe three quarters of the room was booked. My friend got the pechuga de pollo al paso (chicken breast with spinach, roasted peppers, sun dried tomatoes with tomato house), and I got the chuletas rancheros (pork chops with sliced potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and chipotle salsa). My friend would say that his dish was good, and I think my dish was decent. Both dishes came with rice and beans on the side. The pork chop was very thick, so I'll give them that. It came with a lot of sauce (it looked like tomato sauce), and the potatoes were decent. Nothing tasted out of this world, but for $12 it was a good amount of food. Also, meals come with free chips and salsa. The salsa is delicious, so enjoy! read more

There are quite a few Mexican joints within a block radius here, but Senor Peppers sticks out as my favorite. It's a bit more "hole in the wall" than Juanitos which I like. This is literally Grandma in the back cooking food. They have a fair amount of seating inside but also do delivery and take out. The food here is excellent and very reasonably priced. For example we got a burrito, torta and guacamole and it was $22, hard to beat that! The food definitely strikes me as more authentic than others in the area. The service is always pretty quick and friendly which also puts it above the others in the neighborhood. This is just a simple, mom and pop place cooking up great, cheap Mexican food. Definitely give them a chance. Oh and make sure to pull the door hard when you go in, it sticks. read more

A friend and I came here last night to eat before the show at the Count Basie Theater on the recommendation of a local we met on the street. We should have eaten at home. The only thing really delicious was the chips and salsas they put out on the table. We ordered and no lie -- literally less than 5 minutes later our food was out. NOT A GOOD SIGN. The rice and beans that accompanied the dish was okay, tasty but tasted canned. We both ordered the chile relleno/enchilada plate so we could share and have one meat, one chicken each. Suprisingly, they are "one meat only." The biggest disappointment was that the enchiladas were cold. I didn't eat them. Hot food is supposed to be HOT. Only the chile relleno was hot. That was pretty good but everything else was bland and tasteless. I finished off the chips. The only reason I gave two stars is because the chips and chile were good and the servers were wonderful and absolutely friendly. Would NOT recommend. read more
