This place is definitely underrated. This restaurant has excellent food and the service is excellent. The tacos were tasty and they serve a generous portion of meat. Their rice and beans were also delicious. My wife had the grilled chicken platter and it was huge, I'd say enough for two, or to take home for another meal. They take reservations, but when we went, although we had reservations, they did have a couple of tables available. This place is perfect for a pre Count Basie show since is directly across from the venue. It is also a BYOB place. Overall a solid place to eat and enjoy some tasty Mexican food. We were seeing a show at Count Basie and didn't have a lot of time beforehand to find a place to eat. We saw this right across the street. We were thinking based on the location that the prices would be high, but not at all. The prices were very reasonable. You walk inside and there were some tables already reservered. We found an empty table and our server was right over with menus and water. They serve complimentary chips and pico, The chips are homemade and very good. We decided on sharing the mixed grill fajitas. It was so good. There was a good amount of shrimp, chicken and steak. It had great flavor, and the homemade tortillas were very good. The green spicy sauce they provide isn't spicy but adds good flavor. We couldn't finish between the two of us. The food and service was excellent and would come back again. read more

We ate here because it's across the street from the Vogel. We gat a table right away, but the wait staff seemed overwhelmed. We waited a while to get guacamole and had to ask twice. The guac and salsa both were mild. My Camarones (shrimp) dish was excellent when it finally arrived. My wife's beef dish, Carne Asada, was also good and big enough for two meals. Came here after a comedy show at the Vogel. I'd give 5 stars for the service. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Only giving 3 stars because the food was just ok. My wife and I both got mixed fajitas. They were just ok. Not terrible, but not impressive. Average. I think mostly everything was a bit on the bland side. We got guacamole too, and it was decent, but maybe a bit bland. The fajitas, the rice and beans, all just a bit bland I think. Again, not terrible, just not great. You can tell it's a mom and pop restaurant, and it was in the flavor of the food. Everything was tasty. Our experience with Azteca Grill in Redbank, NJ was terrible and you would do yourself a very large favor by taking you business elsewhere!! I have never before, experienced a situation like this and I hope this review saves others from a similar encounter. Once you have this on your "plate" not much else about an establishment really matters. We sat down, were given menus and we made our choices. When the check was left on the table, NOT ONE ITEM on the bill, was priced as printed in the menus. A $12.00 Enchiladas Verde was billed at $14.49. Two Coca Cola's listed in the menu as $2.00 each, was now $6.73! Every item was upcharged. My ginger ale listed as $2.00, was $2.07 on the bill. Sales Tax was also billed on all of the upcharged items. When I pointed the discrepancies out to the waitress she came back with a menu that had different prices scribbled in over the original prices, as if this was some kind of proof of the charges on our bill. The scribbled numbers weren't even close to the charges on the bill. She appeared exasperated and eventually deducted $2.00 off the entire bill. We had a long drive ahead of us and I really didn't want to spend any more time in Redbank , NJ. So we left. I still can't believe that what we experienced was a bait and switch ...in a restaurant!. The only things I could mark it up to were that they rely on people not noticing or challenging what amounts to a scam . The waitress was purely indifferent. Her tip was a big GOOSE EGG with an X on the tip line and the note " Next time do the right thing" No one in authority cared to come to speak with me to resolve my problem, so she was the representative of the establishment .... WE WON'T BE BACK. Like I mentioned in the beginning, do yourself a very large favor and take your business elsewhere. read more

Azteca Grill is a secret gem inconspicuously sitting across from Count Basie Theatre. Each meal starts with warm chips and fresh salsa (but if you like, Maximo makes a spicy salsa verde on request). They have all of the dishes you would expect at a "Mexican" restaurant (enchiladas, quesadillas, etc.) and they're all great, but let me tell you why Azteca is a FIVE STAR restaurant and far exceeds expectations. We discovered it almost by accident one day when we popped in for a bite to eat. One of our party was feeling a steak for dinner and he was absolutely blown away by this poterhouse. He now eats the ribeye every time we come back. Their Spicy Seafood Soup is incredible (actually all of the soups are really good). The broth is homemade and the amount of seafood (often shrimp, clams, and muscles) is super generous. Maximo, the amazing chef and owner, seems to have specials every day, which have never failed to impress. We love bringing a bottle of wine to have with dinner as Azteca is BYOB. Azteca is still operating during COVID, so definitely go support this great local business! If seats are all taken outside, in my experience, they'll gladly put out another table for you. read more

Good Mexican food and great Servie . Perfect for a pre show Leal at Count Basie theater!

Went to see Kevin James last night. Wife and I went early to have dinner first. As we were looking around the earlier show got out and we needed to fine a place quick before restaurants got packed. We saw Azteca across the street and went in. Had to wait 5 mins for a table but that wasn't bad; however, it's a small place that had 4 tables reserved as two tables of eight which no one came in to claim while we were there. Chips and salsa was brought to the table which were good. Wife ordered Mixed Fajitas and I ordered Alambres de Bistek (I'll explain later). Also ordered a glass of water and a Diet Coke. We didn't get our drinks until our food came out because waiter forgot (he was extremely busy, he had two other tables; that was sarcasm) Our food looked like nothing as it was described on the menu or as one would believe it to be. My wife's Fajitas were served in a tomato based sauce and topped with cheese that was melted. When one orders fajitas, one expects a sizzling pan containing the meats, onions and pepper being brought to the table with the accoutrements on the side. Wife said it was ok but weird. My Alambres de Bisek was described as "diced beef with onions, peppers, ham and cheese". Nothing on my plate was diced in any manner. Peppers and onion were gigantic chunks. The beef were pieces thin sliced beef about 2"x2". All topped with melted cheese and was in some sort of sauce that's wasn't listed. I told the waiter the order was incorrect because the ham was missing. He asked if I wanted ham added and I said "no, I don't to add ham because it's supposed to be here in the first place!" He took my plate and about 5 mins later he returned with the ham added. It also came with 4 soft tortillas (also not listed) that were half buried under the food and sauce. If I was supposed to use them to make little fajita style tacos I couldn't because they were saturated with sauce. I tasted ok but the ham had a very strong smokiness to it which overpowered the entire dish. We paid our bill and left after finishing our meal. A menu should properly and completely describe the dish so the customer knows exactly what they're getting. Every spice doesn't need to be mention but main ingredients should be. The place was quite and quaint but not worth the visit. Red bank is loaded with restaurants, shop elsewhere for you meal. read more

What a great spot! We usually go to Senor Peppers or Juanitos. I forgot about this place and we popped in on a rainy Sunday. It is a small space only a handful of tables because of COVID no doubt, but also a small space. This definitely seems like the quintessential Mom and Pop place and I love it! The food is excellent and the prices can't be beat. I forgot the name of what I got but it was tortilla chips, chicken covered in the most amazing green sauce, a good amount of heat but the flavor was unreal. My wife got a torta, this thing was MASSIVE and absolutely delicious and it was $8! The salsa was clearly home made and definitely different than most Mexican joints, it had a vinegary-taste to it but in a really good way. They only have canned sodas, bottled juices, etc. but not a big deal just giving a heads up. Please give this place a try, it's small and if you blink you miss it, but it's worth a visit, FAR better than Juanitos down the street. And if you have kids, they have chicken fingers and that sort of thing too. read more

I decided to stop into the Azteca Grill for a late lunch. Let me say this; Azteca Grill is Amazing! Best authentic Mexican food I've had in years. The service is just as good as the food, & the place is immaculate! One of the cleanest restaurants I've been to. It's convenient to eat here before going to the Basie. Food is mediocre and not as flavorful as I would expect from Mexican food. This place is fantastic. The food is amazing and the prices are so low I worry about them covering their rent. Their pork carnitas tacos ( an $8 serving comes with enough meat to make two lunches if you have extra tortillas) I like that each has two tortillas so they don't break apart. They are also one of the few places that you can get tongue tacos this gringa's personal favorite. If you aren't a fan of Mexican food they also have an eclectic selection of mainstream restaurant favorites like steak and hamburgers as well as breakfast items. Azteca Grill is kind of that hole in the wall place that you randomly stumble into, but pleasantly surprises you! I was unsure of what to expect with so little reviews, but the food was delicious. I tried tacos de chorizo, torta de milanesa de pollo y res and they were absolutely delicious. Staff was really friendly too! Only downside is the bathroom, looked a little gross . What a fabulous restaurant! I had fresh guacamole, salsa and chips with a grilled chicken, Mexican rice, guacamole, tomato, lettuce, and salsa wrap! The most delicious wrap I've ever had! The wraps are served with waffle fries, which were delicious! A very pleasant,and if I may add a surprising dining experience was what we had at a simple nondescript little place called the Azteca Grill In Red Bank NJ. Had tickets to see a show at the Count Basie theater which is located right across the street.Called several restaurants in the area to see if it was possible to get a reservation for dinner at 6 pm. Our show was for 7:30. No restaurant had any sitting for 6pm. So we wandered along the avenue trying to find a place to eat, and so we ended up at the Aztecs Grill. No more than 10 tables, one waitress, some Mexican music on the speaker, simple decor. Good menu by any standards. We didn't know what to expect, my date order the steak with onions, it came with rice and beans. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare. We had the muscles in a tomato sauce as an appetizer. The muscles we fresh, very tasty, the sauce delightfu.I had the fish. Red snapper deep fried not greasy ,or dry very tasty very fresh just put a little lime on and go for it. Dinner was served with a side of warm tortilla,The rice and beans were perfect, ate mine and my girlfriend's. Thank god we ended here instead of in one f those so called restaurants that serve a $ 200.00 dollar steak, and the least expensive item is a bowl of soup, or one of those new restaurants that serve some kind of raw fish rolls with some kind of fancy goop on top. The atmosphere in these places reeks of snobbery and pretentiousness. Don't care to raise my pinky in the air. I" go back to the Aztec Grill again, and again.
