    Loose hem job :(
    Jo H.

3.5 stars I wish I could rate this place higher. I really really do. I love supporting small business owners and genuinely like Denese as a person. I needed a dress hemmed for a wedding I was going to attend. I wasn't too keen on paying $50 or more at the last place I went to in factoria (they hemmed a lined dress for me) but I always feel like dresses are worn just a few times. While I was happy with their work i wanted to find a more affordable alternative. I got a great deal on my dress and wasn't wanting to pay more than double the dress price to hem it. It was a single layer dress, so more simple then one that's lined. I contemplated learning to hem it myself but ultimately decided to turn to Yelp so I could support another persons business. I brought the shoes I planned to wear, and wore the bra I needed to wear. I got out of the bathroom and while she was pinning it, I told her I don't like it short. I like it skimming or lightly dusting the floor. She pinned it up then said she would also add a tack where the leg split (this dress has a high leg slit) so I could be worry free that I wasn't flashing the world. Since the material was slightly stretchy, it should hold. She asked if I wanted extra slack on the hem. I said yes in case it shrinks. Thank goodness I said yes. (You'll see why), to which she responded this material doesn't shrink. * The GOOD * Denese herself is so sweet. I loved everything about her. I was so stoked that all the reviews mentioned her pricing was well below other places and I was excited to have her be my go-to seamstress. She can do copies of clothing you love (I planned to bring fast fashion items and would ask her to re make it in a higher quality fabric). I loved her in home neighborhood set up! She welcomes you in and you go up the stairs. Her sewing room is on the right and changing room is the bathroom, on the left. She seems like a person with a great heart. She takes in homeless people and takes care of her elderly father. She seems like a giver through and through. Response time was amazing. She responds very quickly and has great communication. She is very flexible as well with pick up and drop off times. She offers evening pickup so that's really helpful for people who work. It was about $30-35 to hem a dress single layer. My dress was ready one day early! Yay! * NEEDS IMPROVEMENT * She was sweet to provide a used grocery bag for my dress. It was folded in it. She brought it bagged up to the door and asked if I wanted to try it on. I had brought my shoes to the door in anticipation of trying it on, but we both laughed and said it wasn't that hard of a job so I took it home to try on. I brought it home and the first thing I noticed was the smell. I feel terrible having to say anything less than raving about local businesses, but I do feel like it's important to be honest and state facts and experiences. Should be important to note for people who are allergic that I believe there is a cat(s) in her home. I am not allergic but I know people who are. I couldn't exactly pinpoint the smell.. but it was musty and almost smoke smell? She mentioned she would hand sew it, which to my untrained ear meant... quality! Unfortunately, I took one look at the stitching and was immediately nervous. See photos. It was so thin and it was stitched in zig zag shape and loosely stitched together, I felt for sure it would not hold up if it caught on something. Nevertheless, I had no choice at this point since the wedding was a day away, and I tried it on. The tack broke immediately right when I put it in on (not a big deal to me)... then I looked at the mirror... It was too short. It was the exact length that I didn't like... 1-1.5 inch above the ground . I kept standing in front of the mirror trying to smooth it out and pull it down. My partner kept reassuring me that it didn't look BAD, but it definitely was much shorter than skimming the floor. Regardless, I wore it to the wedding and it did snag right after dinner. Really sad to write a less than four star review... again, I really want to love the service. She does costumes for people so maybe it was a fluke on my job? But judging from the work done on my hem, I sadly won't be returning and cannot recommend the service wholeheartedly. Again, she's a great person and very sweet,.. my hunt for a local seamstress service continues!

Two holes in sweater, very noticeable.

Denese was able to resize the entire dress (no small feat considering it's a ball gown) in less than a month!

Meeting her in person only confirmed it. She listened carefully to every single one of my needs and accommodated each one with such grace and care. My wedding dress is chiffon, and she created the most gorgeous custom bustle in the back that made it look beautifully layered and flowing. Beyond her extraordinary skill, she made me feel beautiful. She complimented me, lifted my spirits, and even took the time to teach me how to walk without tripping on my train. That kind of thoughtfulness goes so far beyond what any seamstress is required to do. After I picked up my perfectly hemmed, bustled, and altered dress, I had a small panic moment (actually, a major panic moment) when I realized the style looked slightly different than I remembered from when I originally ordered it from Anthropologie. I called Svetlana in a near meltdown, and without hesitation, she invited me to come in that very same day. Within 20 minutes, she had fixed everything flawlessly!! I was in disbelief!! Svetlana is a true miracle worker, and anyone who gets to work with her is incredibly, incredibly lucky. I will be forever grateful that she was a part of my wedding journey!!! Her advice saved me money and helped ensure my dress looks best for the big day, and I'm so grateful! I recommend coming to her if you need guidance on alterations needs! I will bring other clothes back to her bc she has my total trust now!
