I love this place! I haven't had much of their pastries, but as a convenient little market, its great. The prices are significantly lower than the local giant super-market, and they have some good rare things. I suppose that's the nature of the Armenian district. The real gem with this place is their spice rack. Ton's of huge containers of spices, most of them for $2.50 each. Its awesome. read more

The place for lahmacun (Armenian thin-crust pizza) and mezze (side dishes like baba ghannouj and tabbouleh). And for everything else that is delicious in this world. Their cooked eggplant (the Armenian take on musaqqa) is particularly yummy. Excellent selection of prepared dishes (stuffed grape leaves, stuffed eggplant, etc), savory pastries (for example, with bastirma, a kind of Armenian preserved meat like pastrami) and sweets (baklava, etc.). Here's what I bought today: 12 garlic meat lahmacun, 12 spicy meat lahmacun, baklava, miscellaneous pastries, stuffed grapeleaves, stuffed eggplants, labneh, feta, yoghurt, really fragrant dried mint, frozen mulukhiya (mallow vegetable) puree, carp roe (good price!). You get the picture. P.S. Don't tell my boyfriend, but I am secretly in love with one of the studs who works behind the counter here. He has most beautiful eyelashes.... read more

A review of their baklava only - tastes fine but not that fresh and very expensive, especially given that it's just a groecery store. The same day I got some baklava from Sofra down the street and that was VERY fresh and good! And, Sofra's was $1.5 to $2 each piece while it was ~$2.5 each piece at Sevan! read more

The best Turkish foods place in Boston (you must try Lahmacun and Baklava )and customer service is perfect

I love Sevan and often subsist off of a pound of their grape leaves, hummus, and pita for a straight week without getting sick of it. I travel quite a distance by bike to get here, but it's worth every mile. Pick up a few pistachio baklava to complement any order and sweeten any friendship -- I used to bring some back for my roommates, and it disappeared quickly. Oh, and the halva is excellent, especially the stuff in plastic wrap on the counter -- I don't recommend the pre-packaged brands. Sevan is a pleasant place -- no fluorescent lights, and generally clean. And there's a very easy-on-the-eyes guy who works behind the counter... he alone could tack on a fifth star. read more

I absolutely cannot recommend this place enough! The pecan baklava is amazing (crispy, lots of pecans, not overly sweet) and the fig baklava is also delish. The best part of my week is when I treat myself to a piece of baklava at Sevan (ok, i will be honest, i usually get two pieces :) Also, the hummus is the best. I think the reason why it is so good is because it is not as salty as what you get in the grocery store. so the nutty flavor of the tahini comes through. It is also creamier than store brands. If you love hummus, definitely give Sevan's a try! read more

Fantastic middle eastern/central Asian (owners = Armenian from Turkey, but they carry numerous regional items). Try the marinated Parmesan (refrig section), the spicy hummus (refrig section), the big spiced crackers (in store wrapped plastic bags on top of the counter) and the pastries BEHIND the cash register (choose the one made with zatar (sp?)). We enjoyed all of them. Generally speaking, the store looked well-appointed and pleasant. Such an amazing spot! I'm not Armenian -- I'm Greek -- but I'd like to add my voice to the chorus here, this place is fantastic. Lots of Armenian, Turkish, Greek goodies to be found. To my delight, oodles and oodles of baked goods and lots of dry goods (legumes) and many pantry staples as well. They have a section of spices, there are some great deals to be found here for spices used in Middle Eastern goodies. (Hint: don't get ripped off by McCormick if you need whole cloves -- you can get a big container of them here for half of what you'd pay at McCormick for a tiny little thing! If you plan on making lots of baklava, you *need* whole cloves and lots of them!) Don't miss out on the wonderful fresh-baked goods. It is a bakery, after all! I had the kasseri, dill and spinach pie -- kind of like a spanakopita in a soft pocket. As a Greek I give this two enthusiastic thumbs up! Also, they have a nut bar. Nuts are serious business, people! Pistachios and almonds especially, and you have several kinds to choose from here. (Among many many other things.) I'll definitely be back. No question. read more

For anyone who misses the taste of the mediterranean middle east, there is no place like Sevan. If your memories of your grandfather are the smell of jasmine and the crunch of dried chickpeas and pistachios, if you like your tzatziki with lots of texture, if no matter how hard you try you can't make eggplant stew like your aunt, if you care that your olive oil taste like olives, if ground sumac goes on your chopped up corn, pickle and bell pepper salad, if what you eat with watermelon is always and only feta....... ...then come to Sevan. It is the best, it is the best, it is the best. I don't know where to begin or where to end... spinach pies, olives, sour cherry juice, fig jam, flat bread, all the spices, dates, dried everything..... the baklava.... especially with pistachios inside. This is not a place for your regular groceries, i.e. they don't have a wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables (Arax down the street is great for cheap produce, and has a wider, although I think not as delicious, selection of dried goods) but it is hands-down, no contest, THE BEST. read more

What great place and good people. They have one of the cleanest, freshest ethnic Middle Eastern - Mediterranean food and ingredients around Boston. I have been shopping from ethic food shops on Mount Auburn street in Watertown for over ten years, and Sevan is by far the best option. Their home cooked food is very good and tasty, deserts are to die for and savory pastries are great for breakfast. However a bit on the pricey side, though you know, you are getting fresh and CLEAN food (which I cant say for their competitors down the street). Ingredients (tea, rice, cheeses, prepared meats etc.) are very competitively priced. I shop at this place twice a month and stock up on all the things I regularly use as I live about half hour away. Here is stuff commonly on my shopping list: Yoruk Brand sucuk (spicy turkish beef sausage, preserved with spices) Spices: hot red peppers (dried after rubbing with olive oil so a bit more moist then american version), cumin, dried mint, mediterranean oregano, sumak (sumac) Variety of cheese but especially goat cheese called tulum cheese is yummy and hard to find anywhere else Pekmez (grape molasses) can be used on dishes instead of maple syrup Nar eksisi (pomegranate molasses) perfect to add sour to salads instead of balsamic vinegar Tahin (hulled lightly roasted sesame paste) used in many middle eastern dishes and an ingredient in humus Variety of pickles (Sera brand is very good, and they have cabbage pickle) Variety of jelly (turkish sour cherry and fig jellies are amazing!! highly recommended) Pistachio (I usually buy couple pounds of it, they have multiple varieties) Pastirma http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Past%C4%B1rma they have very good lean pastirma read more

After 50 years of eating only Lahmejune from Eastern Lahmejune I sampled a 1/2 dozen from Sevan Bakery in Watertown.The difference was in two distinct areas: Eastern gives you too much dough and uses filler spices (overkill)that make for indigestion! Sevan offers a more palatable thin crust with just the right amount of spices to enhance their Lahmejunes.I only wished that I had tried their bakery sooner.I won't buy my "junes" anywhere else! read more

I had a rather disappointing first experience after rev reviews from some friends. I walked in with my 6 year old daughter just before they closed to get some nuts and baklava for a party and found a nice selection of what we needed. HOWEVER, the first guy behind the counter didn't have time for me, and the second one had something to say about everything I asked for - I ordered some baklava, and first thing he quips is "do not give this to your daughter tonight- she won't sleep, too much sugar". The one that made me write this review: I was going to buy a steel teapot- I'd been shopping for something to serve warm mulled wine and thought I'd finally found it- only to get "do you know how to use this? Can't you get something cheaper at say Target?" I answered casually I needed it for a party tomorrow and got "well that's what you get when you wait until the last minute"!! At that point I quickly paid for the food but before leaving I was informed as he casually turned away "remember, the baklava never goes in the fridge"!! Think I'll spend my time and money in other ethnic stores in the area that are more culturally inviting since, clearly, this guy couldn't understand how I walked into his store in the first place! read more

Excellent Armenian bakery/grocery store right on Mt. Auburn. Their pastries are amazing, and their hummus is the best in town. Try the labny dip (yogurt and cucumber) with some of that long flat bread. Yeah, I don't know what any of it's called, but it's all good. The only reason for the 4 stars is that the two guys that are usually working there will only really pay attention to you if you're an attractive woman. read more

Not for me. I got some prepared foods from the deli and they tasted awful, not fresh at all. I suggest you ask for a taste first before you buy anything from the deli. The food may have been sitting there for days, especially if there had been little business for some reason for a few days. They really should put their customers first over the daily receipts. read more

Besides the fact that most of my Baba ganoush cravings attack me on Sunday when they are closed, this is the best damn place in the world. Ok, that is a bit extreme, but I cannot think of a place that sells better hummus and baba ganoush. Their nut bar makes my knees quiver in ecstasy. The food here is great and the service is good too as you'll read in all the reviews I want to mention that you can bring in your own plastic containers to buy foods in the deli section and they will fill them instead of using their plastic containers that aren't really recyclable. All these shops use plastic containers that are not very Earth friendly. This is the only place where they dish things up as you ask for it, and therefore can use your re-usable container. They appreciate saving the money on the container too, they told me. Go green, take a bag and a container or two to fill up with hummos or grape leaves. Yum. read more

Best baklava I've had anywhere in the United States. I make my family take me to Watertown for 3-4 lbs to bring home every time I'm in the metro area (1 lb for me, 2-3 for my coworkers). It's SO SOFT. I've also never had anything less than "wow, this is amazing" from their cold-dishes deli counter. Like, "Woah - this is great tabbouli" or "Woah - this is great hummus" or "Woah - I don't even understand what this concoction is, but it's to-die-for." I wish I could eat more from their store every time I come to town, but alas I have only one stomach and one day, usually! read more

Wow! A hidden gem (or maybe it was just hidden to me)! The best baklava I have ever had- hands down. And quite a selection- they have your regular baklava, but also offer apricot, fig, pitachio, etc. Simply amazing! They also have wonderful stuffed breads- spinich and feta, green & red peppers, etc.- and all very inexpensive, each was about $1.99. It doesn't look like this place needs another rave review, but I just can't resist praising the food here. I can only speak to the vegetarian items from the deli and the baked goods, having sampled most of them. I would disagree with reviewers who find the prices "high," especially when compared to a nearby bakery/cafe like Sofra, which serves the same items at nearly double the price, pound for pound. There is nothing trendy about Sevan--it is straightforward amazing Middle Eastern-Mediterranean food in a clean and friendly store that is usually busy with regular customers, many of them Armenian. I wandered in around noon to get some authentic Armenian desserts for a themed work party. The younger men and older woman behind the counter were all speaking in (presumably) Armenian, but one of the gents asked me what I came for, and was very helpful. I walked out with some traditional baklava and some sweet Armenian cookies, which were a hit at the gathering; sweet but not cloyingly sweet like American sweets often are. Staff was very friendly and helpful, the place had a huge variety of goods; while my sweets were being cut & boxed, I looked around and saw part of the enormous olive bar, an extensive deli and pastry selection, and shelves full of intriguing ingredients I wish I'd had time for. read more
