Open before people are commuting to work, La Castellana was on my early-bird list to stop by. This Spanish pastry shop is ready to go before the sun rise with a lot of patrons lingering around for some coffee and baked goods. It's a bit awkward since I stuck out like a sore thumb here. The pastries were clustered behind the glass display without any signage so I have no idea what was what or how much anything were. Good for pastry roulette I guess. Pastries- I had selected a few and they all tasted pretty similar, a bit stale and plain. It's very inexpensive since I got 6 random ones and a cake for roughly $6. Cake- Soft, creamy, I think it was probably a tres leches with strawberries and drizzled with chocolate. Not bad. Overall Service: Not a soul spoke a word of English here so I basically just pointed at a few things and even though they didn't quite grab the ones I wanted, I just bought it anyways to avoid having to deal with the language barrier early in the morning. It's crossed off my list at least.

This place is awesome, friendly, clean and well kept. Its in the hood and the store front looks hood. But please don't judge the pan dulce on the look of the store. It bread was fresh and made in that morning like a good Mexican bakery would.

Apparently this is called pepinillo? Yes, cucumber in Spanish. Regardless of the name, it's delish.

Amazing bread with very low price and warm customer service. We always stop here after eating at a restaurant on the same street.

My company special ordered a cake with a copy confection on it. The person was supposed to deliver the cake at noon but they came at around 8:30, instead of knocking at our door or ringing the doorbell they left the cake outside our door. When we got the cake we noticed the top was kind of smushed we then went to remove the cover and a quarter of the frosting went along with it. Clearly the delivery person did not want to hand the cake over in person because we would have refused it. I call the number and no one picks up, okay I will just drive to your store then. The man working the store was very friendly and explained to us that unfortunately no one was there to fix the cake and we could take the cakes in the store instead. We did misunderstand the receipt and thought the cake was more expensive than what it was but, we still needed enough cake/pastry to feed the original amount of people that we got the sheet cake for. The man at the store was kind of throwing prices around which I felt were inflated. While I am in the store the woman who runs the cake business gets on the phone with me and called me a liar saying the delivery person was there for half an hour. There were at least eight employees here who didn't hear a single knock. I let her know that that isn't even the point, the point is the cake was ruined and we couldn't serve it. We brought the cake in as proof (picture attached). She then called our company back later in the day yelling saying we took too much merchandise and she would be charging our credit card additional money. Obviously if she does that we would fight it because we are not paying additional money for the frozen cakes and stale pastry we got to replace our sheet cake that the store manager gave us.

I thought it would be a nice idea and I thought I couldn't go wrong with a place that "ensure[s] that what awaits your special someone is not only what you asked for but exceeds your expectations". Well... as it turns out I was wrong. Other than the timeliness of the delivery itself everything else about the service was so ridiculously different than what I had ordered that I wasn't even angry, I just thought it was hilariously bad. Almost like it had been done on purpose! Had the cake and delivery not cost me 50$, I wouldn't have minded but I expected good service for the money payed. 1) The handwriting writing on the cake was sloppy and rushed. It wasn't the picture perfect cake calligraphy you see on their website. It was smudged and blotchy... My 6 year old cousin has better handwriting and I'm sure she could have written more elegantly on the cake than they did! 2) In addition to being badly written/badly presented the spelling on the cake itself was incorrect and read "Happy Brithdad ane" rather than "Happy Birthday One"! I guess cake writing doesn't have spell check. But don't they send out enough birthday cakes to know at least how to spell "Birthday"?. Come to think of it the driver may have written it on the way over. 3) I payed for the cake to have yellow frosting writing and got pink. 4) The cake base delivered was white not yellow as I had requested. 5) The filling was white frosting not raspberry jam. All in all it was still a good birthday because we had a good laugh about the "Brithdad" and it was decent cake to be fair. However, I feel another cake delivery service would have done a much better job. They would have been more professional and probably would have given me more value for money or at least been able to deliver what I ordered. They advertise perfection and customer satisfaction but give you less than expected... I wasn't even refunded for the mistakes they made. Had it been a pizza delivery I would have gotten a free pizza if they brought me pepperoni instead of cheese by accident, and pizza is way less expensive! A 50$ cake though? Nah. i made a yelp page specifically to review this place ha!

Marble tables with mismatched chairs and beat up old leather sofas. Chandeliers that have to harken back to much older tenants in this space. The food is good, I had a ham egg and cheese on croissant and it was wonderful. The croissant was surprisingly fresh. The cappuccino was rounded and smooth and didn't taste at all burnt. Service was ok. Polite but not engaging, my cappuccino was forgotten entirely and I had to ask for it again but it was then made promptly. Regulars that came in behind me had a completely different experience. Service was bright and engaging for them. Again, there was nothing BAD about my service, it was just milquetoast and the baristas seemed disinterested. This is definitely a place where people come and linger and there were folks sprawled about the sofas and typing away at the tables. If I lived in Waltham, I's probably make it a staple in my routine. But I did not linger long, I ate my sandwich, sipped half my coffee and took the rest on my way. I have a feeling this is the kind of place that just grows on you overtime, that said, if you need a coffee or tea and a snack on your way, this may be worth a stop.

They were very patient, answered all our questions, and overall were delightful to talk to. The interior of the shop is also something that needs it's own appreciation post because the decorations make the shop look so much cooler too! As for the desserts -- in the dessert case, they had a series of "cakes in a jar," which is also what motivated me to come to the store. They had some seasonal flavors like Apple Cider, Pumpkin, Butterbeer, etc., and some standard flavors (Oreo, Earl Grey, Funfetti, etc.). Given that fall is in full swing, I opted to try the Butterbeer Cake in a Jar and honestly, I loved it! The frosting is a bit on the sweeter side (I am a huge fan of frosting, so no complaints from me). Both the cake and the frosting had a really nice butterbeer (butterscotch) flavor which wasn't overpowering, but it was very pleasant. Because the cake is kinda squished into the jar, it is a little "crumble-y" but the frosting really holds it together. I will definitely be coming back and I'm excited to try more flavors!
