This place has been here for a long time and I grew up in the area. How I never ventured here until I moved around the corner is baffling. I love bread and I love sweets so this place is DANGEROUS to live close to. I've tried a ton of their various breads, cookies, desserts, pastries, etc such as their Italian Loaf Bread, Cheese Bread, Sausage Roll, Chocolate Croissant, Spinach & Cheese Croissant, Ham & Cheese Croissant, Cut Out Sugar Cookies, Whoopie Pie, Brownie, and more. I'm obsessed with their croissants and breads - 10/10 Their cookies, brownies and whoopie pies are only OK, in my opinion. The Whoopie Pie lacked something and the Brownie was too sweet & fudgy (ironic, yes) for my taste. I've still been meaning to try their Banana Bread and other things. My partner, puppy, and I met, who we assume is one of the owners and she is a sweetheart, who loves are puppy! Highly recommend! Get there early because they sell out of things quickly! I've been looking forward to visiting Breadsong Bakery ever since a friend enthusiastically lauded a day old almond croissant he once consumed. So I headed over one Saturday afternoon and was glad to see a single lone almond croissant sitting among the other pastries in this small corner shop. However, my mood was slowly smothered by my experience. I had already made a number of selections when a regular who had been enjoying herself at the nearby table started up a conversation with me about how wonderful Breadsong was and took joy in pointing out her favorite items from among their offerings, which only added to my order. She mentioned how she loved that their sweets weren't too sweet. As we chatted, a couple entered and were assisted by a different staffer than the one who was in process of helping me. As they left, he chased them down, and my new friend happily announced to them that he just wanted to give them a little something extra, which proved true as he proceeded to pluck two items from the counter display and to hand them over to the couple in a paper bag. My new buddy then told me how wonderful the breads were, and how they were being sold at a slight discount when purchasing multiple loaves since it was so near closing time on a Saturday and Breadsong does not open on Sundays. She confirmed this with the generous worker as the staff made preparations to close up the shop. He agreed, commenting that he would prefer to give them away than to let them go to waste. So I was a bit surprised that as a first time patron who had obviously witnessed this exchange, and who was the only one there beside this most friendly regular, that I was allowed to leave without a little parting gift of my own once I had paid for my order. It made me feel special, in the saddest sense of the word. I know, first world problems. And you'd be right. *** Almond Croissant $2.50 Bulgarian Butter Rolls (feta cheese & egg) $3.75 Quiche $3.75 Chocolate Rugallah $1.50 Lemon Cookie $1.50 *** I snacked on the lemon cookie and the chocolate rugallah the same afternoon. Their regular was right. These were not overly sweet, but were firm and tasty. However, I prefer my lemon to be more lemony, and my chocolate to be more rich. The remainder of the pastries spent the night in the fridge after having lingered in the cool of the car trunk for several hours. The almond croissant and quiche warmed up quite well in the toaster oven. What ought to be crisp, was crisp. The fillings were flavorful. I quite enjoyed both despite their day old status. The Bulgarian butter rolls were sliced and toasted warm the day after that. Swirls of feta curds were found nestled in the tender dough. It was an interesting savory break of my fast. Sunday's breakfast items were clearly the winners of this bakery run, and worth 4 stars on their own. read more

Gahh. I'm so torn about this place. Their stuff is incredibly delicious and over the course of a dozen visits I've only been disappointed by 2 or 3 items. HOWEVER. The owner (?) honestly sucks. He has dark curly hair and he's always there when I go in. I'm pretty sure that I'm overcharged every time I come here, but only by like 75¢ so I never say anything. However, today I only purchased two things: a piece of carrot cake for $4.25 and a strawberry shortbread for $3.75. Easy to add, should be $8. I was rung up: "$8.50". I said, "sorry, but should it be $8.00? $4.25 and $3.75?" (No smile, almost sarcastic tone?) "Oh. Well. Guess it's your lucky day. She should have changed the price." He quickly swiped my card and then greeted the people behind me with a smile. No "thank you for your business," no "have a nice day!" Just dismissal. I don't want anyone to kiss my ass, but basic acknowledgement that I'm choosing to give you my patronage (and money!) would be appreciated. Also, I don't know who "she" is that should have changed the prices but your surly attitude and overcharging isn't cute, and despite the delicious offerings I think I'm done, Breadsong. The iced coffee is the best. The ice cubes are made with coffee. The banana bread is delish. Date Nut bread - needs something. Can't put my finger on it. But it lacks taste. Only one outside table. Called 48 hours in advance to order 24 cupcakes for my baby shower from Denver to pick them up when I landed in Boston and they came out amazing and just the way I had imagine them! I did left them out overnight and wish I had waited till day of to pick them up. Frosting was a bit melty and the cupcake itself a little stale. Where do I start.... the bakery had already closed when I called (note that the 3PM time listed here seems be incorrect), but the owner graciously waited for us to arrive and even started taking our order over the phone. Ice coffees are large and filled with coffee filled ice cubes. Pot pie I'm told was delicious, as was the carrot cake. Spinach/feta role was awesome, and pepperoni role a close contender. Prices were fair. We would definitely come back when in the area. read more

Ownership changed and has broadened the business into not just breads, all kinds of breads, quick breads (banana nut soo good), pastries, pizza, calzones, burritos, filo filled savory pies, desserts, all kinds of beverages including lemonade during summertime - pretty international and DELECTABLE goods for breakfast, brunch, lunch, snack and light dinner. AMAZING. I've been going to Breadsong since I was a baby and now I'm 21 and it's still just as wonderful. They're bread is moist and perfect and their pastries are delectable. One thing - I don't understand why this is but they seem to be good at hiring the creepiest people to work at the front of the bakery. For example years ago a guy worked there with few social skills and NO there's a guy there who harasses you every time to buy more when all you want is a freaking cookie. I discovered Breadsong at the Dewey Square/South Station farmers market that happens on Mondays & Wednesday.. I've tried a few of their things.. my favorite have been the pepper rolls (6 for $2.50) that are good for dipping oil & the molasses cookie that is chewy and a good on the go snack (like on the train going home).. I have also tried their french bread rolls (also good for dipping oil) - the only thing I haven't liked so far is the rice quesadilla! An adorable corner shop in auburn perfect for a little snack. A good selection of baked goods (lemon bar and chocolate rughellla were delicious) , plus teas, coffee both iced or hot. A couple small bistro tables inside with a couple countertop seats. On a good day there's outside patio seats and a little fountain area nearby. We were in Boston visiting our son and happened upon this delectable bakery. Wow what an amazing experience to my palate. They have the most delicious sticky buns, the best I've ever had. I'd love to take a trip back just for the pastries. We also tried the buffalo chicken pizza, pumpkin bread and something else I forgot the name of. Everything we had was superb. Breadsong is a great place to stop by and get a coffee and a bite to eat, and the day-olds are always a great steal! I got coffee there fairly often for a while and always liked it. Their breakfast items are great. However, the thing that really gives this place 4 stars is their cupcakes. Yep. I can't think of a better carrot cake or Boston creme cupcake option. I live right next door to this bakery, and I love waking up every morning to the smell of freshly made bread and pastries wafting in the windows of my house! The staff (Rob, and the owner Rumyana, especially!) are always friendly and efficient, and I love their iced coffee. They actually make the ice cubes out of coffee so as the ice melts, your coffee gets stronger! I would minus one star because their sandwiches are small for the price, but the bread is so fresh and tasty, that when i do order one, it's worth it. They also have a wide selection of innovative, yummy baked goods (I love their chocolate croissants). One other (small) thing I appreciate is that they will take credit cards for any purchase (as any business is supposed to) which is a blessing for a college student like me who rarely carries cash. read more

And given the 4.5 avg rating, I would say disappointing. They both taste like what you can get from like a Whole Foods or Roche Brother's bakery. The croissant wasnt flaky and has no buttery taste. You can tell when someone who is a bread-baker is making cookies because the texture and taste of the cookies have a bready, not-sweet-enough quality, which was the case of the chocolate cookies I bought. Not enough chocolate in their chocolate croissant, and the dough part was just okay. The guy who waited on me at the counter was a little contemptuous when I asked him which cookies had nuts in them and then insisted that oatmeal raisin cookies were always made with chocolate. Uh, that would be a "no." Thus, they are known as oatmeal-raisin cookies, not oatmeal-raisin-chocolate cookies. read more

I like to support local businesses and this is one I really appreciate. Breadsong is located about a mile and a half from me and I'd walk double that distance for their pastries and sandwiches. The challah is some of the freshest and tastiest in Newton (no small feat) and the pastries, such as the turnovers, are flavorful without being too heavy. On my way into Boston on the train, or if I'm preparing to head down to New York, I stop by and get a sandwich, because they're nourishing and satisfying.
