I woke up with a very specific craving for mochi, and my dear husband gave in and drove me 20 minutes to Crystal Bakery. We ended up getting two strawberry cream mochi, one mango cream mochi, and the mango pomelo sago. The sago was definitely on the expensive side for the portion, but it absolutely hit the spot and satisfied the craving. The mochi was the real star. The outer layer was soft, chewy, and pillowy, while the filling was light, creamy, and not overly sweet. The strawberry cream mochi tasted fresh and delicate, and the mango version was rich, fruity, and refreshing. Each one felt like biting into a little cloud. The mango pomelo sago was creamy and packed with mango flavor, making for a nice contrast to the mochi. Not exactly an everyday treat given the prices, but for a special craving, it was worth the drive and I'd happily come back.
Crystal Bakery has been open for a few years now, and their fresh cream mochi remains the biggest draw to the store. However, as they've expanded their bakery case to include specialty cakes, pastries, and drinks (all of which are delicious, by the way) there has been a noticeable decline in the care put into the mochi itself. The mochi used to be incredibly consistent: thinly wrapped, evenly distributed, well-dusted so it wouldn't stick to the paper cup, and filled perfectly. These days, it's a bit of a gamble. You'll often get unevenly rolled skin, filling spilling out, or mochi sticking stubbornly to the paper it sits on. The prices have also gone up exponentially since they hit peak popularity--paying almost $40 for just six mochis and a tiger cake roll is rough if you're expecting repeat customers in a suburby area. Yet, because they have virtually zero local competition, this remains the absolute best option for anyone craving fresh cream mochi in MA in my humble opinion. Otherwise, you're looking at a trip all the way to Flushing, NY. The store itself is small and packed, making it strictly a grab-and-go spot, though they do put out a couple of umbrella tables outside during the warmer months. The space is always clean, but it gets pretty chaotic inside considering there is barely any space to stand, let alone comfortably view the bakery displays. As for the service, it's just okay. The staff isn't particularly friendly or helpful, but they aren't rude either.
Mochi! Yes! We stumbled upon this bakery and decided to come on in and see what it had. We were nicely surprised by the mochi donuts and all the different yummy looking pastries! There was a self serve section where you can choose from a variety of yummy looking treats and another counter where you ordered from at the cash register. We couldn't decide but finally got a couple of mochi donuts: the taro and caramel donut and regular mango Mochi. Everything was so nicely packaged and we were excited to try all our treats! The mochi donuts were very good. The taro mochi had some yummy white chocolate which complemented the taro flavor. The mango Mochi was also very good. It was nice and gooey and it had a good mango flavor. They also had boba milk tea drinks that we will have to try next time. But now we know all the yummy surprises this bakery had!
Such a cool bakery! I came here a few weeks ago with some fellow yelpers but didn't get anything as I was already full, but came back recently with some friends! This bakery is such a cool experience- I love that they have lots of mochi options, but also let you get your own custom one. I made my own mochi with vanilla and strawberry inside, the and the oreo dusting. It was so cool how they made it right in front of you! The mochi itself was delicious (although a little messy) and i definitely would make the trip for more of it! I personally am not a mochi connoisseur, but my friends I was with are and they said it was "life changing". The bakery itself is pretty small and there's not a lot of seating, but it's a fun vibe and definitely busy!
Still a really solid dessert place but everytime I've come, I've had to wait more than 30 minutes for dessert already made. I'm not even getting the mochi made on the spot. I just don't know if I can keep frequenting if the service doesn't improve because it's very apparent that they need to hire more people to handle the traffic. I've waited for more of the item I wanted to be made because they chose to serve the people who came after me first with the stuff I ordered. It's just very disorganized. Makes me sad because I do really like the food here
Omg!!! We absolutely love this place. It's soo good. Spent over $120 buying so many treats and desserts that lasted us did days. Kids loved it and so did we. The pastries, the mochi, boba drinks were all so good. Reminded us of Japan. Lot of ppl when we came in a Saturday but they're very organized and the line moved quicker than I thought. You can either order with a person or on the kiosk. Standouts for us include the fresh mochi, boba drinks particularly the lychee and mango boba drinks, cream mochi especially mango and strawberry, black sesame cookie, special mango pomelo sago, and mango cream cake. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back.
After coming back my third time I can say I've noticed some quality issues. I ordered a Taro boba and usually their boba is very soft and fresh but this time it was very hard and old and mixed with some soft ones, it was very unpleasant. I got their tiramisu and for the price it's ones of the more poor ones I've had, for their prices crystals is a bit crazy to pay for when the food is just alright. For me their standouts are the cheesecake, their real Tea bobas (oolong, etc) and mochi. If this was better priced and more consistent I would be back much more. Decent spot I've come to a few times.
The hype is truly worth it. Delicious and fresh mochi! They have pre-made options and made to order options as well. I got the Matcha Mochi from with rice powder and my friends got Peach with Oreo dusting. Absolutely delicious, super soft and chewy. They also serve mochi donuts, drinks and other bakery items so there is definitely something for everyone. The service can take some time if you are getting made to order item but it's worth it trust! Super cute bakery but the space is limited.
Super small family run business so you know it's legit! Small bakery and very crowded, but it's the type of organized chaos that works well. We made the drive from Boston to Newton just to get our hands on the cream mochi and they did not disappoint. The outside is perfectly soft and delicate and the inside is creamy but not too sweet. There was a bit of a wait, but it was worth it. There were many high school and college age people in the store, maybe just came back from an event. Super cute little spot, would return.
This bakery is a little bit outside of Boston, but worth the trip! The mochis are amazing. The cream is so fresh and I love the texture of the handmade mochi. Ordering at the desk is really chaotic, so I recommend ordering at the self-service kiosk. I tried ordering at the desk but there was no menu readily available, so I couldn't figure out what I wanted. A lot of people in there and not much room to sit, so I recommend getting something to go!

We thought the milk tea boba was very light, more milk than tea and was a bit watery. For mochi we got the following flavors: Mango - My favorite. It contains fresh mango and whipped cream. Strawberry - Tasted like strawberry shortcake. My second favorite. Matcha - Filled with matcha cream and some red beans. It was a bit too much even as a person that loves matcha. Cookies and cream - Surprisingly pretty good. It has bits of cookies crunch. Chocolate - dark chocolate mousse like filling.

The mochi layer was nice and thin with a generous amount of filling, which we loved. My boyfriend got the Matcha Smoothie with Cheese Foam. It had good flavor but was a bit too sweet for my taste. There were also some larger chunks of ice in the smoothie. Not a huge deal, but it would have been better if it was blended more smoothly. I ordered the Boston Summer. I didn't really like it at first, but to be fair, I didn't know what I was ordering and still don't quite know what was in it. The bakery itself is very small. While we were waiting for our drinks, a lot of people came in, and it started to feel pretty cramped and claustrophobic. Not the most comfortable space to hang around in, but it seems like a popular spot. Overall, the quality was solid and I would definitely come back for the mochi!
Confusing looooong menu. The menu isn't very user-friendly, so we went for a recommendation by another yelper - get the fresh mochi they said. So we did. Fresh mochi with matcha cream and taro paste, rolled in butter crunch flakes. The order took more than a few minutes to get ready, and it's a little hard to know if your order is ready because there is no visual indicator (a screen displaying order numbers would be so helpful). The staff also wasn't the most careful with the way they were using gloves, they touched their face, the register etc etc. Plus the place is small without any seating so it can get crowded and you don't even know how much time for your order to be ready. But omg the mochi was spectacular. Soft chewy tasty not too sweet. Absolutely smacked it out of the park. A lot of points to improve upon but 5 star mochi. read more
mango mochi lived up to the hype!! i appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet but not bland either. loved the cream that's in it. this is probably a me thing but it seemed more sticky than what i'm used to for mochi texture... like possibly underdone? also got the lychee milk tea and it was okay! i should've gotten it at 25-50% sweetness level but it wasn't anything special store seems understaffed so i will give them grace but it took a very long time to get my order as well as pay for an additional pastry right before i was leaving. there was a period where no one was at the register for a good while read more

This place popped up on my TikTok FYP page a couple of times so I've been dying to try it! The store itself is fairly small with just a couple of seats by the window. There was only 1-2 people working there when I went on a Sunday afternoon so there was a little bit of a wait. The mochi was 10000% worth it! The mochi is so soft and the fillings are the perfect sweetness! I'm definitely coming back here! read more

I went to the store in the afternoon on Saturday. Parking was easy to find. Convenient. I used Passport Parking, so I'm glad I had the app on my iPhone ready to pay for a ticket. My kids and I went inside, and there were some people, but without any waiting, we got our treats. Impressive. Fast service and good taste! I'll definitely come here again!! read more
Wait time for actual items were slightly longer since they seemed understaffed and online mobile orders were coming in more. For instance in the fridge we see they had a certain amount of mochis but they couldn't see it because the online orders came in before I got to the register but they haven't filled those orders yet. If you pay with cash you get 5% off. Had the strawberry mochi and it was good with texture and fluffiness not being dry. The mango with cream cheese mochi was interesting, not my cup of tea as the combo didn't really fit for me personally. read more
The fresh mochi is absolutely incredible. They are almost $5 each which is a bit steep but they're huge. The fresh cream is so tasty and this is definitely a must try if you love mochi. We tried the strawberry and mango flavors and absolutely loved them both. They had several other flavors like oreo, matcha, and more. So good! read more

Delicious fresh mochi! I ordered the: -mango cream mochi: the mango was so fresh and sweet! I love how the cream balanced everything out. The mochi skin was so soft, so so delicious. (Pro tip don't eat this over your clothes... you'll get rice flour all over you...!!!) -strawberry cream mochi: I saved this for the next day so of course the strawberry got a little sad but the mochi skin was still soft and delicious the next day. -tiramisu: not too sweet, cream was delicious and decadent. The customized mango vanilla cheese mochi here is one of the best things I've had this year. I don't say that lightly. The strawberry mochi was delicious too, and the matcha was a solid classic. Everything is made fresh in-house daily the texture is exactly what good mochi should be. The mango boba tea was amazing, rich and filling. The jasmine tea was a nice lighter option alongside it. The space is cute, unpretentious, and the owners are super friendly and welcoming. Loved it so much we put together a full reel about the experience find it on Instagram @bostonvegeats if you want to see it before you visit. Newton's most underrated dessert spot. Worth the trip from anywhere in the Boston area. read more

Had to try this place after seeing it go viral on tiktok. Overall, a 3.5/5 for me. I think it's a nice treat to have a fresh mochi place in greater Boston, but the mochi itself was too sticky and difficult to eat. My particular mochi was falling apart before I got to even take a bite. Not sure if the mochi was not as great quality that day, but I don't think I'd come out to Newton again for this. read more

This place definitely got very popular over the past couple months and it 100% deserves all the hype. I came in on a Saturday afternoon and there was a line out the door, but the line moves pretty fast. The restaurant itself is pretty small and there's not a lot of seating inside, but there are chairs around to enjoy and look at all the cute decorations. I ended up getting a couple different mochi to try and got a custom made one as well. Our favorite mochi were the pre-made cream filled mochi. The texture was very soft and the filling wasn't very sweet. I can't wait to come back and try the other pastries they have. read more
The CUTEST little bakery! Everything I tried was delicious and their pastries/desserts are STUNNING! I got the brown sugar milk tea boba which was sweet and delicious! I also tried the mango smoothie which was super refreshing. For pastries I got one of their custom cakes which they called a tiramisu, but it wasn't coffee, it was more of a fruity flavor that was so delicious! It wasn't too sweet which was perfect for me but it was rich and delicious and the presentation of it was just stunning!! They also make fresh mochi in house so I had to try that! I got mine filled with mango and strawberry and it was INCREDIBLE! Can't recommend this place enough!! The staff was also super friendly and gave great service. They gave me advice on their most popular items and were so sweet the whole time! read more

The only place in Newton that sells fresh, handmade mochi! After seeing countless posts about it, I finally made my way over. I also got a strawberry and cream mochi as well as a watermelon slush with boba. I came on a weekday afternoon and was able to catch up with a friend at one of their small tables. The store is pretty small, not much seating, but they also sells bakery items and gift items. There was one lady working who took the orders and made the mochi as well. I got mine made with mango inside and crispy flakes on the outside. It was a super hot day, so the watermelon slush was hydrating. She originally forgot to add boba, but added to the top and gave the rest of the slush in a cup. The mochi's were super soft and delectable. I do have a preference for the ones with cream as I think it's a tab but sweeter. Overall, a great place to check out in Newton! read more

Super friendly owner and staffs, it's a family business. They are popular for their mochi made fresh but everything else is really good. The store is cute, quite small but does have some seating and a piano that if you know how to play you can play and get discount. They also have cake made to order, a bit on the pricey side but SO GOOD. Their drink menus, the milktea is good, the boston special one is a bit too sweet in my opinion due to the matcha paste, my favorite one is the green bean drink, I haven't found any store that sell that around here. All the pastries from small box cakes to the savory treats with taro and pork floss are all very good. The amount of money I have spent at this store LOL They also have moon cake during the moon festival season and some other options year round as well. Overally one of my favorite bakery around the area! They're available on uber eats as well read more

The desserts were okay nothing special. We tried the strawberry, Oreo, and tiramisu mochi. As well as the vanilla mochi donut. The strawberry and Oreo were a solid 7.5/10. But the tiramisu had no flavor. It just tasted like whip cream with choco powder on top. The mochi doughnut, though was the worst thing I've ever had. It was embarrassing. It had to be at least two days old. Even if it wasn't the doughnut was almost hard. No chewiness at all. The store had a cute vibe and the food was pretty but not tasty. Would not come back. read more
