I woke up with a very specific craving for mochi, and my dear husband gave in and drove me 20 minutes to Crystal Bakery. We ended up getting two strawberry cream mochi, one mango cream mochi, and the mango pomelo sago. The sago was definitely on the expensive side for the portion, but it absolutely hit the spot and satisfied the craving. The mochi was the real star. The outer layer was soft, chewy, and pillowy, while the filling was light, creamy, and not overly sweet. The strawberry cream mochi tasted fresh and delicate, and the mango version was rich, fruity, and refreshing. Each one felt like biting into a little cloud. The mango pomelo sago was creamy and packed with mango flavor, making for a nice contrast to the mochi. Confusing looooong menu. The menu isn't very user-friendly, so we went for a recommendation by another yelper - get the fresh mochi they said. So we did. Fresh mochi with matcha cream and taro paste, rolled in butter crunch flakes. The order took more than a few minutes to get ready, and it's a little hard to know if your order is ready because there is no visual indicator (a screen displaying order numbers would be so helpful). The staff also wasn't the most careful with the way they were using gloves, they touched their face, the register etc etc. Plus the place is small without any seating so it can get crowded and you don't even know how much time for your order to be ready. Crystal Bakery has been open for a few years now, and their fresh cream mochi remains the biggest draw to the store. However, as they've expanded their bakery case to include specialty cakes, pastries, and drinks (all of which are delicious, by the way) there has been a noticeable decline in the care put into the mochi itself. The mochi used to be incredibly consistent: thinly wrapped, evenly distributed, well-dusted so it wouldn't stick to the paper cup, and filled perfectly. These days, it's a bit of a gamble. You'll often get unevenly rolled skin, filling spilling out, or mochi sticking stubbornly to the paper it sits on. The prices have also gone up exponentially since they hit peak popularity--paying almost $40 for just six mochis and a tiger cake roll is rough if you're expecting repeat customers in a suburby area. Yet, because they have virtually zero local competition, this remains the absolute best option for anyone craving fresh cream mochi in MA in my humble opinion. Otherwise, you're looking at a trip all the way to Flushing, NY. The store itself is small and packed, making it strictly a grab-and-go spot, though they do put out a couple of umbrella tables outside during the warmer months. The space is always clean, but it gets pretty chaotic inside considering there is barely any space to stand, let alone comfortably view the bakery displays. As for the service, it's just okay. Super small family run business so you know it's legit! Small bakery and very crowded, but it's the type of organized chaos that works well. We made the drive from Boston to Newton just to get our hands on the cream mochi and they did not disappoint. The outside is perfectly soft and delicate and the inside is creamy but not too sweet. Such a cool bakery! I came here a few weeks ago with some fellow yelpers but didn't get anything as I was already full, but came back recently with some friends! This bakery is such a cool experience- I love that they have lots of mochi options, but also let you get your own custom one. I made my own mochi with vanilla and strawberry inside, the and the oreo dusting. It was so cool how they made it right in front of you! The mochi itself was delicious (although a little messy) and i definitely would make the trip for more of it! Still a really solid dessert place but everytime I've come, I've had to wait more than 30 minutes for dessert already made. I'm not even getting the mochi made on the spot. I just don't know if I can keep frequenting if the service doesn't improve because it's very apparent that they need to hire more people to handle the traffic. Mochi! Yes! We stumbled upon this bakery and decided to come on in and see what it had. We were nicely surprised by the mochi donuts and all the different yummy looking pastries! There was a self serve section where you can choose from a variety of yummy looking treats and another counter where you ordered from at the cash register. We couldn't decide but finally got a couple of mochi donuts: the taro and caramel donut and regular mango Mochi. Everything was so nicely packaged and we were excited to try all our treats! After coming back my third time I can say I've noticed some quality issues. I ordered a Taro boba and usually their boba is very soft and fresh but this time it was very hard and old and mixed with some soft ones, it was very unpleasant. I got their tiramisu and for the price it's ones of the more poor ones I've had, for their prices crystals is a bit crazy to pay for when the food is just alright. For me their standouts are the cheesecake, their real Tea bobas (oolong, etc) and mochi. If this was better priced and more consistent I would be back much more. I felt like the sweet cream, taro, and mochi was good, but it was sweet in comparison to the pork floss? the pork floss is supposed to make it savory, but the sweetness overpowers the pork floss, so I found it to be odd. I went to the store in the afternoon on Saturday. Parking was easy to find. Convenient. I used Passport Parking, so I'm glad I had the app on my iPhone ready to pay for a ticket. The mochi layer was nice and thin with a generous amount of filling, which we loved. My boyfriend got the Matcha Smoothie with Cheese Foam. It had good flavor but was a bit too sweet for my taste. The fresh mochi is absolutely incredible. They are almost $5 each which is a bit steep but they're huge. The fresh cream is so tasty and this is definitely a must try if you love mochi. The CUTEST little bakery! Everything I tried was delicious and their pastries/desserts are STUNNING! I got the brown sugar milk tea boba which was sweet and delicious! I also tried the mango smoothie which was super refreshing. The only place in Newton that sells fresh, handmade mochi! After seeing countless posts about it, I finally made my way over. I also got a strawberry and cream mochi as well as a watermelon slush with boba. I came on a weekday afternoon and was able to catch up with a friend at one of their small tables. The store is pretty small, not much seating, but they also sells bakery items and gift items. There was one lady working who took the orders and made the mochi as well. I got mine made with mango inside and crispy flakes on the outside. It was a super hot day, so the watermelon slush was hydrating. She originally forgot to add boba, but added to the top and gave the rest of the slush in a cup. The mochi's were super soft and delectable. There's half of block along Washington Street that's home to two great Asian places - Crystal's Bakery and Grandma's Kitchen (Taiwanese food). Crystal's in particular is having a social media moment right now with their fresh mochi. The customer service is top-notch, with the lady (owner?) making most of the drinks by scratch and explaining to each customer how best to enjoy the desserts/pastries. For instance, when I asked to get an order of the mochi, she told me it was best to let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before eating, to let the mochi skin get all nice and chewy. The mochi was good - you can tell it's home-made for how not sugary it was, and I liked how the wrapper wasn't too thick. Was it the softest, chewiest mochi I've ever had? No. Was it worlds better than the type I usually grab from the grocery freezer? Of course. My favorite flavor was actually the chocolate (they add what tasted like rice krispies to the filling). Super friendly owner and staffs, it's a family business. They are popular for their mochi made fresh but everything else is really good. The store is cute, quite small but does have some seating and a piano that if you know how to play you can play and get discount. They also have cake made to order, a bit on the pricey side but SO GOOD. Their drink menus, the milktea is good, the boston special one is a bit too sweet in my opinion due to the matcha paste, my favorite one is the green bean drink, I haven't found any store that sell that around here. All the pastries from small box cakes to the savory treats with taro and pork floss are all very good. The amount of money I have spent at this store LOL They also have moon cake during the moon festival season and some other options year round as well.
