Sevan is great. I especially recommend the homemade yogurt and the the labneh with zatar and olive oil. They have an excellent selection of olives, pickles and nuts. The walnuts are the freshest and tastiest you can get around here. The manti (small pasta filled with beef and spices, available in the frozen section) are expensive, but very delicious. Oh, and get the simit (bagel-shaped, with sesame seeds) and the choreg (an eggy bread, sort of like challah, spiced with mahlep.) The bogacha (pastries filled with cheese, spinach or sausage) are right by the cashier counter and I can never leave without getting one to eat rightaway, warmed up. Really loved this store, drove a long way to get here even though I wasn't initially intending to shop here but that's where I ended up after going through some other places and not finding what I needed, I'm so I was glad it was worth while. Love it! Throw out your takeout menus and head to Sevan's for some homemade awesomeness! I can't even pronounce half of the things in their bakery / deli case but I can tell you that dinner for two including dessert...$9 I'm going to throw myself a party so I can have them cater it! The tiny store also has a lot of imports, WINE!, and this really amazing Middle Eastern chocolate and vanilla Nutella that I kind of have to try immediately. This place has an amazing bakery. The date cookies are so flaky and tasty and have no butter or eggs in them. Their prices are comparable to the other middle eastern stores in the area (there are a few others within a few blocks) and they have a wonderful selection of fresh and frozen goods. The only thing stopping me from giving them 5 stars is that I've found several jars of jam that are out of date at the store. If you watch for the expiration dates, then you will be fine. read more

I drove 3 hours from southern CT to come here. It was worth it. My only regret was not buying more things. I bought a box of hot lamahjeune which reminded me of what my great aunt used to make. Delicious fresh pita, velvety hummus, baba ganoush was not overly smoky, all delicious. I also bought a few pastries..not sure what they were called. Round flaky pastries with ground pistachio in the center. They have wines, beers, jams, an incredible array of nuts and dried fruits. I wish I didnt live so far or I would shop here often. read more

Their grape leaves are My favorite Grape leaves of all and there are so many treats that are awesome but I went in today and one of the owners told me his lamejun were coming out of the Oven. I didn't know they made them I brought 6 of them home and oh my they were fantastic. This place is terrific, especially when you combine it with Massis down the street. Massis is better for baked goods, but Sevan has a crazy amazing nut bar (have you ever even heard of a nut bar??) and really good, fresh take-away foods. Much cleaner than Arax, too. Sevan also has the best olive bar of the three stores on Mt. Auburn. The olives are as good as Whole Foods (less variety, but high quality), but half the price. I think their take-away food (boregs, tabbouleh) is slightly better than Massis, but it's a close call, and both are good. read more

I like coming into this deli/bakery. I tend to get food from the salad bar and I can never leave with out a least a few baklava or other goodies. Try the ones made with hazelnuts! Staff is great and I find I can joke around with them even though I'm walking in a few minutes before they close. I honestly wish they stayed open past 7pm. I have nothing but love for this grocery, which has things that I can't find anywhere else-- like frozen fresh anchovies imported from Turkey. This place has the BEST selection of dried fruit in this area. They have so many different kinds of fruit, and it's always fresh and delicious. I don't think anyone has mentioned the wonderful dip - the counter people will know what you mean if you say, "the orange stuff" - it's feta and red pepper mainly. I had some at a friend's party and basically camped out at the bowl for a half hour. Other advice on grapeleaves - if you are eating them the same day, don't refrigerate them. This place. THIS PLACE! I literally go in here every time I'm driving through on Mt. Auburn St. and pick at least one of a few now favorites: Hummus (the Spicy Hummus is great too, pretty hot though so I usually get just a bit of that), Vegetarian Grape Leaves (amazing! but quite oily), Kalamata olives (from the olive bar, don't get pitted; spitting out the pits is half the point), and the Dodoni Feta Cheese. The Trakya feta is really good too; it's super dense and creamy, more the Dodoni. The youngish man who works here is super friendly (although hasn't given me a discount yet despite my frequenting the store haha), and they'll let you sample things if you're not sure about something. The Babaganoush is delish (though garlicky). The fresh baked bread (with the nigella and sesame seeds) is so good too. The small vegetarian pizza-type thing is good, much better heated in the oven than cold. Will be back in as soon as possible. YUM. read more

This place sucks. How much you ask? It made me make a Yelp account. I recently moved to Boston area from another city and I always search for reasonably-priced Greek/Turkish/Middle Eastern imported food items. I was told about this place and went there a couple of times. One time the pastry sheet I bought was so mold-y on the inside and I could only see it once I opened and spread it. Well, that was 4 bucks thrown in the trash but I gave them another chance. Another time an imported snack I bought was already expired. Yes, I didn't check, because who sells expired items? I found out when I saw that it was not looking or tasting fresh. I understand that these are imported food stuff and there might be mishaps here and there but this place is so pricey that you assume they would pay more attention. The final straw came when I wanted to buy some Turkish dried beef (soujouk). I don't buy it often so I did not know much about its market. I saw that they did not put price tags on the sausages (actually they rarely have price tags on things) so I picked one and took it to the cashier with the other stuff I bought. Guess what? A 10 oz (283 g) mild soujouk was 10 bucks (you can buy it online for 6 bucks or elsewhere in a shop for 7-8). When I wanted to return I got a dirty look because if I wanted to return my total bill would be less than $10 and i would have to pay cash, and they would have to give my money back on my card and that would be too much hassle for them etc. etc. I told them that I am buying the pricey sausage now but they are losing a customer and earning a bitter Yelp review. There are a lot of Middle Eastern specialty shops close together, so my girlfriend and I decided to do a blind taste test. We bought hummos, cured black olives, and baklava from Sevan and two of its competitors. Then we tasted everything without knowing which store it came from. Sevan came out first or second in all three tests. We especially thought the housemade hummos was tastier than the other stores'. I no longer live in Boston, but try to stop by Sevan's on my way home when I have to be in town. The grape leaves are simply the best I've had anywhere, by far. It's not worth visiting without taking home a tray of them. All the other spreads and salads are pretty remarkable as well (e.g., tabouli, jajek, orzo, tzaziki, and the other stuff I probably can't spell correctly). The mezze at Sevan's is great. Fresh and well prepared most of the time. The baba is chunky and smokey; the muhamarra makes Sofra's seem bland and boring. The grape leaves are also usually excellent, though sometimes can be dry. Make sure they look fresh. My only criticism is that the store should keep a closer eye on the freshness of the mezze. They're expensive, so they should be consistently excellent. The hummus sometimes looks dry and other items too can look old. But overall, the best quality on Mt. Auburn in Watertown, even exceeding Sofra for some items (though almost as expensive as Sofra, which is saying something). read more

I've heard a lot about Mediterranean foods but never really tried any until I came here. Sevan Bakery is more than a bakery. They have the most incredible assortment of exotic nuts I've ever seen. But the thing that keeps me a repeat customer is their lahmejunes, Armenia's version of pizza and with the first bite I've been hooked ever since. They've got some other 'stuffed' rolls and there was one that was stuffed with some meat, potatoes and cheese. I think they said the name of the meat and it sounded like pastrami. Whatever it is, it reminds me of prosciutto only with character. If you're out at lunch time and are tired of drive-thru food that doesn't satisfy go to Sevan.
