Butternut Bakehouse did an excellent job at handling a ton of people while providing delicious food! There is a good amount of seating in the store and free water for customers to fill themselves which I always love. The Bacon Egg and Cheese was a wise decision and priced very very well, I would definitely recommend that! My favorite sweet was the strawberry tea cake, top class that was. The donut and banana bread were also very tasty but I didn't get to eat enough of them to feel as strongly about them as I do the strawberry tea cake. Charming bakery with a neighborhood vibe. Unlike most bakeries, I felt like this one had some healthier breakfast options like egg white bites. It was nice to have a more home-made version of the classic Starbucks bites and enjoy a coffee that was well balanced. On a weekend youll find an array of people from families to groups of friends, but I never saw people waiting long for seats. Adding to the neighborhood feel is their bulletin board of local ads and promotions which really adds to the community feeling of this place. Only ordered for takeout, but I got a maple iced coffee and a potato pesto pastry and was slightly disappointed with both. The coffee tasted super watered down, and the barista made the wrong coffee but it already took them over 10 minutes to make it so I just accepted it. The pastry was HEAVY which I think some people like, but it felt like a meal with how much potato was in it. It was really oily from the pesto and not very flaky. There was a lot of space and seating inside though so that's nice if you want to stay. Checked this cafe off my list and don't need to be back. read more

I stopped my Butternut Bakehouse the day before Easter and it was incredibly busy (which was amazing). I picked up a dozen pastries which were all amazing and my family raved about them. But I also got a breakfast sandwich and a cold brew and the cold brew with cold foam was absolutely amazing. The breakfast sandwich was simple but also perfection. Some friends introduced this to me recently. I love it! For example, today I had their fruit tart which wonderfully tasty and fresh. Matched with their iced Mocha, I was in cafe heaven! There is free parking in the lot out back which is also where there handicap entrance is located. They have two unisex bathroom which are always impeccably clean. The staff is well-trained, fast, knowledgeable, and very kind. read more

I was really excited to try Butternut after all the good reviews, but I left a little disappointed. To start off, the baked good were incredible. We got the passion fruit donut and the chocolate bouchon. I dont even like passion fruit but it was so good - the passion fruit flavor was delicate but came through. The bouchon was rich, yet not too sweet. However, the coffee was probably one of the worst coffees Ive ever had in my life. There was not much flavor in my mocha - you cant even tell it was a mocha. We were really excited for the caramel latte but there were grinds in our coffee and it tasted extremely burnt... TLDR, would come back for baked goods only. read more

The hidden "tip" aka admin fee really rubs me. There's a very small sign by the cash register that kinda explains it - but know you're going to have to pay a 12% fee on top of everything, good service or no. I stay away from places that aren't on the up and up with me. Not usually a griper (see my other reviews), but I want the same respect from the restaurant as I give. All that said, the review would be a 4+ without the dubious billing, and I might return. The morning bun was very tasty on it's face. we ordered to breakfast sandwiches (1 bacon breakfast sandwich and 1 breakfast sandwich with caramelized onions). We took a seat at a booth (uncomfortable) and noticed table needed cleaning, crumbs and coffee stirrers were on the table. I asked for a cloth to wipe the table and was told "Oh I'm sorry I'll be right there to wipe it off.". The food was ready before the table was wiped down. I asked for someone to wipe the table again before we eat our sandwiches. It was finally wiped off after asking a second time. I went to the station where one might expect to find straws, condiments and napkins. There were no napkins at the station. I returned to the order counter and asked a woman behind the counter for napkins. The said we are all out. (it was lunch time). She asked a gentleman behind the counter if they had napkins. He replied, "ya check downstairs.", the woman disappeared I surmised she went to get napkins. She returned and told the gentleman, "There's no napkins." She returned to her job behind the counter without speaking to me. I asked the gentleman about the napkin situation and he looked at me turned around and pulled two paper towels from the sink area and handed them to me! I'm wondering how does a restaurant run out of napkins? And once they were aware they didn't have any napkins didn't do anything about it! This restaurant is one the patrons take their dishes back to a station when they are done. I noticed at that point they put a giant roll of paper towels at the station. Food was okay a little greasy and the "caramelized onions were barely visible in the omelette like egg! We ordered Ice tea and the ice tea was very weak and too much ice in the cup ( not worth $4.00! I have eaten at this restaurant before and Had a decent experience. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best I would have given them an 8. But on this last visit I would give them a 3! I hope they improve there cleanliness, napkin supply and customer service! read more

This review is purely about the experience at this location. Absolutely love the one in Arlington. Pastries are awesome, but service was poor. A few very rude baristas - one in particular. Very visibly annoyed. Couldn't be bothered. Unclear why, and the coffee was terrible. Very slow to provide / restock basic things like coffee cup lids. Go to Arlington location if you can! The Belmont Butternut does have a lot more seating than the Arlington one, but 4 tables were taken up at lunchtime by people working on laptops. The workers are nice and enthusiastically recommend their favorites. The veg sandwich was ok. Same with the macaroon and the nainamo bar-- just ok. Pastries are fabulous and the coffee is amazing. Perfect place to go for brunch after wandering the trails. We had the two Valentine's Day specials, a pistachio plum croissant and the blood orange glazed pain de chocolat. Those were flaky and moist--my favorite was the pistachio plum. In addition, we had the mustard sausage and the Apple fritter. Really good flavors on both of those. Had standard drip coffee and a latte, which were delicious. Cute place and it was my first time visiting. I wanted to enjoy my first visit, but I only ordered an iced tea and it took more than 10 minutes to get it. The cashier was nice but put my drink order in a huge line with espresso drinks, which is so frustrating because they could have easily done it themselves, rather than having the person on the espresso machine do it. Non-espresso drinks like black coffee, teas, etc. shouldn't have to be handled by the person on the drinks bar--having the cashier do it both increases efficiency and makes the experience more enjoyable for the customer. Also, for some reason the barista kept moving my drink further and further back in the drink line, which seemed unnecessary. Again, all I ordered was an iced tea! read more

Both vegetarian/vegan options and friendly staff. I had their Italian Veggie for lunch one day and their mushroom another. I enjoyed both of them howevere the mushroom was fuller with regards to flavor. Their white bean/artichoke pate was delicious in the Italian Veggie. There is plenty of seating, and it is accessible via the back parking lot, so it takes some of the stress of looking for a close parking spot away. read more

How wonderful it is when you have a local bakery as marvelous as Butternut Bakehouse! I have sampled a number of their delicious offerings, including their fruit danish, pain au chocolat, and molasses ginger cookies, but always find myself drawn back to their morning buns. These buns are a heavenly ode to the bakers' basics: sugar, flour, and butter. And during the Easter season, their hot cross buns - - with an enriched dough, studded with citron and simply iced - - are divine hot out of the oven. The folks at Butternut Bakehouse are doing a stellar job creating a lovely communal space with the best pastries ever. I love how they regularly introduce new items inspired by different cultures (like the egg tart from Portugal, babkas, etc.) my personal favorites are the jam buns and the chocolate salted caramel cake!!! A must have for all the birthdays in my family. I also love all the seating in this location and how the manager checks in on everyone to ensure they're doing well. You can really tell they take care and thought and are intentional about their decisions. I see folks are upset about the admin fee. I get it since it's not super common yet. But it is pretty clear by the signage IMHO. My only request to the crew would be to order some high chairs. We've got an extremely wiggly kiddo who needs containment. :) read more

My friend and I decided to visit the new Butternut Bakehouse in Belmont . The coffee (Karma) was great, the pastry, as usual, was delicious and there was plenty of room to enjoy all of it. It was worth the 30 min. trip. My only disappointment came after we paid our bill and my friend pointed out the 12% mandatory charge added to our bill. Although a small sign, which I did not notice, at the cash register said " no tipping" I felt this charge was indeed a non-tip...tip that I had no control over. When I inquired if the non-tip would be added to my bill if I were picking up a call-in order I was told yes and it was not a tip but a....."service charge". I noticed an earlier review had a similar complaint about the "service charge" and thought the Business Owner's following explanation wasn't convincing. "In sum, like other cafes in the area, we are moving away from tips and toward a service fee to ensure pay equity across all staff. While we have high service standards of our staff, we also want to ensure that their pay doesn't fluctuate if they have a bad day." If a business feels it needs to "ensure pay equity" or cover pay fluctuations because of a "bad day"then the business should pay the staff more money and not expect the customer to make up the difference with a "service charge". Now, the staff can have its bad day and the customer will still pay the service charge. read more
