Frankly prices are a bit steep, but quality is above average, and that's partially expected I guess out here in the burbs. Sashimi in the appetizer was great-- thick pieces and the taste seems like high quality fish! Rolls were tasty, especially the seared tuna. We all left feeling fairly satisfied with what we ordered. Ambience is a bit dim in here. It was a bit hard to converse with folks as a result, and frankly was starting to feel a little sleepy. Maybe that's just the mood that they're shooting for here, but I'd appreciate something a bit brighter and more friendly to groups and chatter. Overall, solid if you need sushi around here, but nothing to go out of your way for. Think there might be better options elsewhere that are more reasonably priced.

While were there, many Chinese-speaking people came in to eat and order out, which is always a good sign. It is a no frills, non-fancy place to eat (kiosk ordering, self serve plastic utensils). We focused mostly on the noodle dishes for this trip, and want to go back to try their other dishes (many which seem to be more geared toward the American palate, e.g, General Tsao's chicken). Deep fried dough sticks (you tiao) - 5*/5, I love these and have not found dim sum places in Chinatown that serve the light, easy to tear apart version of this anywhere and Sang Kee Asian Bistro does not offer this on their otherwise wonder dim sum menu. I am SO happy to find this and will be back again and again just for these. Along with some hot, sweetened soy milk to dip them in, this will be my special treat/snack go to item at Taste of Chang'an. Hooray! Pork & Chives dumplings - 5/5, these are very good dumplings and although I like the filling I make better, I am unwilling to make my own wrappers so I can imagine ordering these for takeout in the future as an appetizer for a party. Hot & Sour soup - 4/5, good overall but could use more hot and more sour. I appreciated how the broth was actually not broth and not as gummy as some hot and sour soups can be. Changan Biangbiang Noodles - 4/5, I appreciated the hand pulled noodles but found the ratio of pork belly pieces to the amount of noodles to be too low so after eating my way half through the bowl I had only noodles left. Flavors are good, but the next day I did not want to eat my leftovers which is a sign. Pork Ribs Noodles - 4/5, my son had this and he and I agreed the pork ribs were more flavorful than the pork belly pieces in my noodles. He also had many leftover noodles with no more meat, and did not want to eat the leftovers. Sauteed Spicy Chicken Noodle - 4/5, my husband had this and it looked more like a chicken/green pepper dish on a bed of noodles. Leftovers had a good ratio of all items in the dish and I did eat these the next day for lunch. When I go back, I'd like to try their zha jiang noodles, pork buns, scallion pancakes, and their other dishes. And I am so happy to have found somewhere on the Main Line where I can pick up fresh, hot you tiao!

With so many people focused on the increasingly emerging local foodie scene in Havertown, places like Chaiya Thai are frequently overlooked. Located in the Oakmont neighborhood of Havertown, most folks will overlook it with nearby Brick n' Brew and Wawa. Small and family-operated, this is I think a two person operation. You'll be greeted by a charming older woman who runs the business. Inside are a few tidy tables and welcoming traditional decoration. They recently revamped their website for quick and easy online order (the better option than calling, as they are frequently busy and may not pick up right away). If you do decide to visit, there is metered parking along the street and paid parking lot on Darby Road. The food is superb - easily the best in Havertown, and really competitive against any other place in and around the area. My wife and I have tried nearly everything on the menu, but we keep going back to the exact dishes you'd expect - the Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles never fail to disappoint, and while foodies may roll their eyes, we are unabashedly fans. I also have a theory that you can tell a quality of Thai place by the quality of the Thai Iced Teas. The teas here are the perfect balance of sweet, milk, and tea flavor with an Instagram-able look. In sum, the food here is excellent and lovingly made to order. You may find a bit of a wait when if you pick up, as your order is finished off when you walk through the door to, ensure it's at its freshest. Your patience will be rewarded and you won't leave hungry.

We got: spicy tuna roll, OMG roll, pork dumplings, and rock shrimp aioli. All of this came to around $60. Spicy tuna roll: good, tasted the same as the dish does from any other basic sushi place. OMG roll: this was my favorite thing we got and only thing I really felt "worth it". Shrimp tempura, avocado, and mango inside. Topped with tuna. This was delicious and had a nice crunch to it. Pork dumplings: pretty solid Rock Shrimp Aioli: I can see from the yelp pictures this used to be only $10.95. We paid $15.95, which would be fine, I get prices go up overtime, but our portion was WAY smaller than the ones shown on yelp. Will attach pictures. We felt they really skimped on this one. We also felt the dish wasn't as cooked as it should be and more soggy than crispy. Overall, the food was generally ok but a bit basic and expensive. I definitely didn't think it was worth the price difference over Vic's (which I also find to be a bit basic but at least is pretty affordable). The portions were also a bit small, I still didn't feel totally full sharing $60 worth of takeout with just my husband . Maybe it's worth it for the nice atmosphere if you dine in here but I definitely didn't think it was worth it for takeout.

Lunchtime is busy. I'd never been. A number of business people dart in for a quick and inexpensive meal. My friend and I did, too. I should've stuck with what I love at Tao One, but instead I went with moo goo gai pan. While okay, it wasn't as good as a restaurant that just does Chinese. Lunch specials come with soup, salad and entree, categorized on the menu by cuisine. Engrossed in conversation, I neglected to snap a photo of the moo goo. I will say that while I didn't love it, the vegetables were crisp and the portions generous. At lunchtime they're used to getting customers in-and-out to return to work. While we were eating soup, the waiter came out with salad. Then came our entrees; we were still on the soup! (No room on our two-person table for all these plates!) So I conclude: for my purposes, dinnertime is better, and I'm sticking with my favorites. And I stand firm -- Tao One remains one of the best restaurants on the Mainline. (Just not for Chinese.)
