Got takeout here recently and we enjoyed it. For appetizers, we had the following: Steamed Watercress Dumplings - Thin skin dumplings with watercress, mushrooms, pork and shrimp. Very tasty. Steamed Pork Dumplings - Thick skin dumplings with ground pork. Typical Chinese takeout dumplings with a good amount of filling. Dan Dan noodles with ground pork and peanut sauce - Noodles with spicy peppers and pork on top with peanut sauce below. Mix it up and it's got a good burn. Pretty spicy. Cellophane Noodle with Shiitake Mushrooms and Bean Curd - One of our favorite dishes here. A light sauce with large mushrooms and tofu, with Mung Bean (glass) noodles. General Tso's Tofu - A spicy sauce with tofu squares. Very runny but tasty. Shrimp with Honey Walnuts - Large shrimp in a creamy sauce with walnuts. Crabmeat and Shrimp with Angel Hair - Mei Fun noodles in a light sauce with real crab and shrimp. Really, really good. Metered Street parking out front and a paid municipal lot available just down the street. We'll be back. read more

Sorry for the lack of pictures. The wonton soup was very good but not hot. The pecking duck was tasty but the skin wasn't as crispy as it should have been with a good amount of fat between the duck and the skin. The shrimp in black bean sauce was the favorite of the table as was the fried rice. But all the food came out warm not hot. Service was fair due to not checking in or filling water glasses. Sampan Waz at one time a great restaurant. We stopped going for some time and tried them out again recently. We are vegetarians have been for over 25 years we ordered an entire vegetarian meal only to realize it was chicken. Wow, the absolute worst customer service I have ever encountered and all over very mediocre food. We scrolled restaurants and then placed an order on GrubHub. We are vegetarian and ordered a bunch of different vegetarian options, including the Singapore rice noodles, which we requested with tofu. When our food arrived, we discovered multiple types of meat/fish in the dish. When we called since the menu said nothing about meat or fish, both employees we spoke to were incredibly hostile and did not have any interest in making it right. Apparently, we should somehow have divined that "Singapore Rice Noodles - Hot and Spicy" would have multiple non-vegetarian things on it. According to the manager, it doesn't matter that the menu does not indicate this would be served in this fashion because "it's been that way for a million years" and that's a direct quote. I so had the taste for miso soup, shushi, as well as shrimp with black bean sauce so I stopped at this restuarant for dinner at 8:00pm. I entered the restuarant and the owner does not greet me very nicely. The first thing she says was that the Shushi Bar was closed, which was okay, but it was the way she said it. Instead of her escorting me to a table, she pointed her hand over to a table at stated that they close at 9:30pm. Okay, it's 8:00pm. I'm by myself and I doubt very seriously that I was going to be longer than 9:00pm. The food was not that tasty. The service was below par because of her demeanor. You know, by far this might wind up being the weirdest place I have ever reviewed. Part of me doesn't really know which way to go with it. I'll explain. I'll just get the downside out of the way right now. Don't come here expecting great service. They just don't seem to care if you're there or not. Now, they're not openly mean or anything, and maybe it was because they were busy. I don't know. But they just don't seem to be on the ball. From walking into the room and not being shown a seat (which is no big deal but it's awkward if you are a first timer), to waiting a good while to get a menu, to waiting even longer to get our order taken, to getting our soup before we even had silverware, to not getting any complimentary crispy noodles with duck sauce while other tables did, to actually getting an eye roll from the waitress when I asked for a water refill (after waiting quite a while just to get their attention), something just overall isn't right. Also, as many have mentioned, the layout is just odd. You walk into a very average decorated Chinese restaurant, and if you choose, you can go up the steps and eat in a far nicer Japanese themed room. It's almost like they've created a have and have not atmosphere. If you wind up sitting on the boring side, you might feel cheated. On top of all this, another weird quirk, my wife and I got two completely different menus. I got the all Japanese menu with no Chinese options whatsoever, while my wife got the Chinese menu. We had to switch just to see the other choices. Just a lot of awkward things going on here. Now, time to get past all of this. Because I think I know what's going on here. They don't have to have great service apparently. Because they know. Oh yes, they know. They know that once you have the food, you'll come back no matter what. The Coconut Shrimp appetizer is nothing short of fantastic! I wanted to order 4 more... and I mean 4 more full plates of it, not just 4 more shrimp after we finished. The wife decided to try the General Tso's Chicken after seeing great Yelp reviews on it, and even though she doesn't always like General Tso's, she loved it here. My taste of it confirmed that it is quite tasty. I went for three special sushi rolls. The Amazing Tuna Maki had three types of tuna in it, topped with a pepper tuna. The Pink Lady came out wrapped in crab leg meat. And they had a special Lobster Salad roll that had Shrimp Tempura inside, and lobster salad on top. Each one of these rolls had a special flavor, and was something creative I never had anywhere else. As some have said, they're not always rolled as tight as they should, which provides a challenge. But the rice seems softer and better steamed than most places. It's a trade off. The food was good enough that I decided to keep them at 4 stars on that basis alone. Just don't come here expecting anything more than good food. read more

We came here for a Friday dinner. Restaurant is very large and no issues getting a table. We sat by the sushi bar because we like looking at things being made fresh. I had the sushi sampler and it was delicious. The fish was so soft and delicious. The salmon melted in my mouth. The portion was generous and it came with miso soup and salad. My husband had the chicken katsu and it was super crisp but not too greasy. Service was excellent. Our waters were filled frequently and we were checked up on. The lovely wife enjoys sushi and I like Chinese so we look for combo places like these folks. Our usual haunt for this type of food is Harusame in Ardmore but last night we choose here and it turned out to be a big mistake. We rolled in at prime time on a Friday Night and the place was empty. Not a good sign. For drinks I ordered a Mai Tai and the wife a Mango Margarita. Each was $5.95 and they weren't worth .99 cents. It was embarrassing to even see them sitting on our table. They were both watered down junk. I ordered Egg Drop soup and it was adequate. I followed that with an Egg Roll and it was boring and flavorless. My entrée was Beef with Black Pepper Sauce. It was a very small portion and was meh. My sushi loving wife ordered Brookline Maki ($8.50) and Spicy Uni Maki ($7.25). After one bit of each the look on her face was not good. She said the quality of the seafood was very poor and pronounced both dishes to be just barely edible. When we walked out, much of her food was still on the table. I havent been to Sampan for a few years, now I know why. My usual go-to was closed. I ordered egg rolls, steam dumpling, chicken egg foo young and sesame chicken. The egg rolls were good. The egg foo young was okay but first time I had peas in the dish and they were hard. Steamed dumplings were doughy and the worse was the sesame chicken. There was breading on the chicken (?) which came right off and the sauce was horrible tasting. I would not recommend Sampan for their Chinese food. read more

This is the first update that I've written, but I felt like I needed to downgrade my original 5 star review. I ordered take-out on my way to an evening event at my school - two Philadelphia rolls, quick and simple. When I got there, the place was pretty busy for a Tuesday night and there was only one lady handling the to-go orders, answering the phone and seating people. This wouldn't have been an issue if there weren't other servers standing around watching. First strike. I had to wait while the two customers ahead of me were helped, which was fine. My order was ready and I paid and got out of there. I arrived at school and eagerly took out my sushi to get started since I hadn't eaten much all day.....NO CHOPSTICKS! Such a pet peeve of mine. So, I had to eat with my hands. Strike two. Because the rolls that I ordered are usually pretty tight and not likely to fall apart, I would've been alright (if not a little peeved) with eating with my fingers.....except that the rolls were very messy! I had one roll that was collapsing on itself and another with a piece of salmon so large that it could've been used for 3 pieces - it was hanging out of the piece it was situated in and looked pretty messy. I was not pleased. Strike three. So, the food is still quite tasty, but Sampann Inn needs to work on employee work ethic, chopstick delivery, and the visual aesthetics of their presentation! read more

Faithful Dining Companion and I went for a weekday dinner. There are two sections to this restaurant - ugly, tacky, cramped vinyl booth land and elegant, stylish, Asian table land. We got stuck in the former, in a "nook" by the door. Service was, uh, minimal and Utilitarian. I would recommend they hire people who actually appear to want their jobs. Those were the bad parts. The good part was the food. Chinese style steamed meat dumplings = Yum! Mongolian Beef = well done, good proportion of meat to veggies, onions nicely caramelized, nice balance of heat and savory flavors. Moo GAO pan was just OK. Veg sushi was disappointing in that it lacked that vinegar flavor in the rice. Nicely presented, though. Portions were generous and served family style. It's a good bet especially if you want both styles of food. You can order both no matter where you sit so ask to be seated in beautiful Asian land. read more

This place is an absolute joke! I walked in and sat for over 15 min without ever seeing a server. I got up and approached one asking if he could help me with a server. No response... and he walked away. I immediately thought he didn't speak English. Turns out, he does and when he finally reached my table 5 minuets later, I asked me if he heard me and he dropped menus on my table and walked away!! I immediately left.. Came in here for takeout when our local Chinese food place was closed. I was shocked by just how busy this place was for a rainy Monday night, I guess it makes sense considering that this place was recommended to us by friends who drive past 3 or 4 Chinese food places to come to Sampan Inn. I ordered General Taos chicken, house special fried rice, spring rolls, egg rolls, egg drop soup, and beef with broccoli. The order was placed easily and I only waited a few minutes even though I basically drove there right after placing the order. Overall the food was above average, I felt like the portions were a bit on the small side for the price but again, the quality was really good. My wife particularly liked the wider fried noodles for adding to her egg drop soup. The interior of the restaurant was very elegant, I don't know if we will be back for takeout but I know we will be back for an eat-in meal. read more
