Just wanted to update my review, and state that the staff and team here are awesome and on top of things. I recently had some issues with my camera and was assured by Service Photo that since I got my insurance all I had to do was bring the camera in and they would send things out for me. I don't have to worry about packing, shipping or any of that. Being someone that is always running around, that type of customer service and ease is absolutely amazing. I was having issues with my camera and I took it to the right place. I kept seeing black dots through the lens. The guy helping me was extremely helpful I wish I remembered his name. He put a battery in it showed me how to adjust my view through the camera as well as he cleaned the black dots off with compressed air. I am a forever customer here now. I can't rave enough about the experience I had at this shop today. First, they answered my email promptly about some previously owned equipment. Second, the location was easy to find, clean and well-organized. Third, there was enough staff on hand to address all the customers' needs, including mine, promptly. Fourth, they were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and courteous. Fifth, their selection was HUGE and even included a random gift item that will be perfect for my photography-loving uncle. i came here not really having an agenda to buy anything; just needed to rolls of film.. started browsing around until i met one older man behind the counter.. he started showing me some of the fuji display - i told him; "in the future i will need a digital camera for my travel needs" - i had more to say about my preferences and mentioned a sony a6. well as soon as i say that model name he told me i dont need that camera and showed me this newer model. yeah it looks great and again... i came here with no intention of investing in anything new.. but after i left the store something stuck to me. - woke up the next morning with my mind telling me i needed that camera that man had shown me. well i am back in my hometown with it happy as ever that i made this risk/decision - i know it will prolong my career as a photographer and propel me to experience newer ventures. i am curious to know if they have a battery grip on hand as well for this model, nevertheless i will be coming back to visit this place in the future. read more

I was so looking forward to visiting Service Photo Supply, to assess the camera equipment I have and to see if it is worth upgrading before my upcoming honeymoon. I'd heard such great things and was excited to support a local business instead of going to Best Buy. I arrived just a few minutes after 3 pm and was surprised to learn the store closes at 3 pm on Saturdays - no big deal, except the store was still packed with customers. A gentleman blocked us at the door, saying they were "actually closed," and didn't want to let us in. I asked if we could come in anyway, given that the store was still full, but was asked what I wanted to do in the store, and was discouraged from coming in because "things were winding down." I've worked retail in the past, and I understand that after a long day, closing time can be a relief - but I never, ever blocked someone from coming into the store if there were other customers around just after closing time. I'm sure this store usually offers great advice, and I'm sure I caught them after an especially busy Saturday. But in the end, I won't be back - the feeling I got was that they didn't need or want my business, and that unwelcoming vibe isn't worth all the good advice they might have on offer. read more

Just got a great trade-in deal and walked away with an F4 in great shape. As a professional photojournalist who's based in Baltimore, I can't emphasize enough how fortunate the city is to have a walk-in full service photo shop that specializes in all things film related. You can't talk to Amazon or someone in NYC when your camera breaks down. I use them for cleaning equipment also. Ask for Lauren, she really knows her stuff. I wanted to support this store after moving to Hampden but if you order a camera from here, you are lucky if the one they are trying to sell you is in stock. You don't get a clear answer when your camera is coming in and they are rude when you call to ask. I lived in Manhattan not far from B&H and spent a butt load of money there so when I moved back to Maryland I wanted someplace like it to sell my old stuff. This was the only place. Nobody is as big as B&H but they didn't disappointment. Everybody was friendly and respectful. They even helped me carry stuff from my car and the stuff they didn't buy back to my car. I'll definitely be back when I get back into photography. The sales staff seems very knowledgeable as I overheard them while I waited and tried not to be tempted by all the pretty new cameras and gear. read more

I've been wanting to go here for a while. Went down with a friend who was after converting film to disk (they had a referral for him). I was just wandering, looking, and mentioned that batteries leaked in my Nikon SB900 flash that I paid several hundred dollars for. THey said I could get it fixed, but it would cost more than the used SB900 they had in the case. Got it for $150, which I thought was an awesome price. Great local spot to get name branded photo gear. Staff is knowledgeable, but be prepared to pay significantly more than B&H (as well as having to pay tax! Booooo). Trade in prices are BS but understandable for business reasons (they need to make at least 25% on resale, so you can get more selling private or through the various online forums and groups). Personal experience: they've gotten a little opinionated before over why a 12 megapixel camera isn't worth much anymore (I tried to sell my D700 earlier this year and was literally laughed at when I said I was getting low-balled). I was told I couldn't sell it for what I wanted, 1700. I left and sold it later that week for 1800. In your face Service! I was also only offered $1000 for my Nikon 14-24 because "demand was low and they had 2 used ones already." I actually ended up selling it 2 weeks later for $1500. Not selling to Service put an extra grand in my pocket! All in all, if you have gear questions and/or purchase needs and CANT get an answer through the well rounded online photo community and dealers, this is your place to go. read more

I went here to buy a compact digital camera. There were two Nikon models, one just basically the newer upgrade of the other and about $90 more. I asked the salesman what the difference between them was, if it was worth it, and he told me that he didn't think it was worth it for my stated purpose. I appreciate not being up sold and will return to Service Photo if I have the need. The hours can be kind of limiting, and parking can be a real feat. Tip: don't go down the street just north of the store.... it's a one way dead end street, and the only way out by the time you realize you're trapped if there's no parking is to try to turn around in somebody's parking pad, go the wrong way for a couple of feet, then go through a teeny alley. read more

I had a very unpleasant experience at this store today, as usual when I patronize this shop. A 'new' employee, Dan, was very condescending regarding questions I had about film and exposure. Most of the experiences I have had with this staff are this way. He was not helpful at all and acted like a gatekeeper of information. I don't know if it's because I am a woman, or black, or both. I do not recommend this shop if you have any questions, whatsoever. They will talk down to you and try to make you feel stupid if you are not a man or white. Dan then told me, after I asked to purchase a camera battery, that I would 'probably choose the wrong one since he couldn't see what kind it was'. Since I am clearly an idiot with a photo mfa who doesn't research the things I need before I go into a store to purchase said items. If i'm asking questions about film exposure and I'm an artist, I'm not asking for your mansplaining. I'm asking for new cool ways to push the film exposure. I gave a lovely woman named Lauren my feedback and she was great about it. Go see Lauren specifically if you must. The owner responded to my feedback with an 'apparently she was offended by what my employee said' and 'she also had an issue with the women to men ratio of employees on the sales floor'. The latter about me being offended is untrue. The misogyny of more men working there to women working there is in fact true. The reason, according to Burke, is because he puts out ads for jobs and since most 'people' don't reply because 'we get paid to sit at home, he hired nice guys who are a little shaky in the retail environment'. I have receipts of the owner, Burke, saying this. I will just order from b+h from now on so I don't have to deal with men in photography having a stick up their butts. I had a bad experience when getting an appraisal on my lenses. They were not consistent. Different people made a quote differently. I didn't like one guy's attitude. He gave me a very low price on the lens that I bought as new and used twice. I got a much high quote from B&H Photo. Another issue is parking space. read more

I've been going to Service for 23 years back to the days of good old wet processing. I have to say now that there is the Internet I had kinda stopped going there unless I needed something on the fly. But lately I find myself going there more and more. I'm little sad some of the old timers have started to retire. Al (with the ponytail). I've been to this store many times and each time I have been completely satisfied with their excellent customer service. All the employees are extremely knowledgeable about photography and all their products. They are extremely friendly and have great rapport with all their customers. They even let customers test out any of the cameras or lenses. It's a toy store for photo enthusiasts and professionals. They sell new and used equipment. They have a great section on used cameras and used lenses. This is one of the reasons i have gone back often. Their used selection is worth visiting. You can find some great lenses. I was first hesitant on buying used, but they proved me wrong. i trust Burke (the owner of the store) and his business. He helped me the first time i was there and was extremely helpful in answering all my questions. i had no idea he was the owner. Their prices are competitive with online prices. Its better to test out the lens in their store first before you buy online. You may end up buying in their store like me since their pricing is good. I purchased from them a brand new 17-55 IS f/2.8 and a used 10-22mm lens about 18months ago and I am still very happy with both lens. I had a great lens repair/ cleaning experience with them as well. Well, that's another great story. The point is...They take excellent care of their customers and you can trust these guys. I moved to California last year and they are one of the reasons why i miss Baltimore, MD. If you love photography, you will love these guys and it will be hard for you to leave the store each time you are there.
