I love having a hardware store in the neighborhood! So convenient to be able to walk down the street to get what you need (AC filters, a hose, nails, etc.) without driving to a suburb chain big box store. The staff are also very helpful - the last time we arrived, someone walked right up to us and asked us if they could help us find something. That was especially appreciated since the store isn't huge and it can be hard to find something, since the store is small AND well-stocked (there are things hiding anywhere)! At Falkenhan's, they really go above and beyond. We had an old trestle leg table in pieces, but had long ago lost the hardware that held it together. A staff member at Falkenhan's spent about 15 minutes with us, thinking through which bolts, washers, levelers, etc. we would need, and helping us select and test different options. This evening, we put it all together, and voila! A table brought back from the dead. We couldn't have done it without them, and all that help only led to a $10 purchase of hardware. While I like to support a local business they make you work for it. It's super cramped with a really low ceiling. It's really hard to move around and located anything. The funny thing is they. Probably have what you need but you'll never find it unless you ask which is the next problem. They seem like they are always doing something besides helping or greeting you. When you ask, they look, pause and then end up having it. Another annoying thing is so many little signs telling you what you can't do, $10 minimum charge, trash cans cash only,(check picture). But at the end of the day they have decant prices and lots of merchandize and EZ parking. In a pinch I would not hesitate to go here. read more

One of the arguments to go to a local hardware store is the customer service. Unfortunately, my experience at Falkenhan's was not up to par. I met up with a pompous dreadlocked white boy who obviously would rather be getting stoned then to be working in what I guess is mom & pop's store. I love Falkenhans! At Home Depot or Lowes, I'm always in there 45 minutes trying to find simple things and being mis-directed by sales associates. At Falkenhans, everyone knows exactly where everything is and I'm in and out in a few minutes, unless I choose to browse their extensive selection. And Cop Car is a real cute (and raggedy) cat! If you need wood, doors, etc, they don't carry this stuff, but Walbrook Lumber on North Ave. has 5 acres of selection, so there's basically no reason to leave the city for hardware! read more

I love this store, and I am so happy it's in our neighborhood. Nowadays you don't get the customer service, friendly associates, and quality products at the big box stores. This place is small ish, with two levels but everything is neatly stocked and well priced. You don't need to look far for help from employees be it the lovely owner Deb or any of the store associates. My husband has been a loyal customer since he's lived in Hampden circa 2005, and I have since I moved here in 2014. They have a plethora of gardening tools, equipment, cleaning products, bolts, screws, and just about anything you'd need from a hardware store. They also make copies of keys which is always helpful! Parking is free on W. 34th street and metered on Chestnut. Prices are reasonable, with a $ 10 minimum for credit cards. I love their sign on the register that reads 'we are happy to help you once you've finished your phone conversation'. People who talk on the phone in public places and try to multitask are the rudest! Check out this great gem today. read more

Finding the door to enter is part of the fun of this place. Then once you figure out that the only door in is through the basement it gets that much better. If you need it, it's here. If you can't see it right away ask, they will find it. Unlike the big warehouse stores it won't take you long to get to it. Falkenhan's is great -- it makes me think of what my parents' basement might be like if my Dad were to accumulate much more in the way of tools and bits & pieces of hardware. (Entrance is on the side, on 34th down a couple of stairs.) From what I have seen, it looks like they have pretty much anything you could want, though you are better off just asking where things are instead of looking yourself. The people that work there are friendly and helpful, and know their stuff. It's definitely a place you can go if you have something to do or to fix, but you're not quite sure how to start. read more

Falkenhan's is an old school hardware store that saves you from Lowes or Home Depot hell. I loved perusing the packed aisles in search of things like chisels, wall anchors, glue, nails, and implements to repair our 1930s era Wyman Park 1 BR apartment. The staff are locals who do not exactly open themselves up to tourists, but they are nice if you ask them for assistance. I can see why this place is still in business. People go out of their way to shop here, price point be damned. But it's not charity. It's respect for quality service and years of community spirit. read more

It's 2 days before thanksgiving and I am getting ready to host 15 people. My sink drops at least 2 inches and find that thehardware to hold it has popped off the granite. I collect them and bring them to Falkenhan's and lay them out for Deb, the owner's daughter to ask her what to do. She goes into her office, searches the hardware, prints out an instruction sheet how to do it, and then goes into her black book of contacts and writes down about 3 names for me to contact. I am so appreciative, impressed and will forever more be a loyal customer. A very funky place that at first just impressed me with it's quirky side, but now deeply impressed with it's heart side. read more

Very interesting old school family-owned hardware store. Need just 8 screws? They will sell you 8; unlike big box stores where the only package is of 1,000. It's hard to find stuff, but they have it. I stopped in to buy a block plane and was pleasantly surprised to find the price on par with the other locations. This place has a good cross section of tools and parts.
