I bought a Toro mower at auction in December and immediately took it to Ayd Hardware to be looked over and tuned up for Spring. They charged $95.00 just to take it in. Despite what the owner said was common practice, no one started it up for me when I picked it up so I never knew if it ever was actually fixed. When Spring came and I tried to use the mower for the first time, it wouldn't start. So I took it back. After an ugly argument with one the shop employees, I agreed to leave it again for yet another $25.00. Vince, the owner, implied that I had put old gas in it, but later said that there was a hair caught in the carburetor, yet after $125.00 the mower still does not work. They obviously do not know how to repair small engines, and their attitude is insufferable. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this operation. Find someone reliable. read more

Last summer, my lawn mower was on the fritz. Thanks be to Yelp, I found Ayd Hardware. The store itself transports me back to simpler times when customer service and friendly staff were common. I brought my mower in for diagnostics one afternoon, and had it returned to me the very next day. Staff offered good advice on maintenance, then sent me on my way. The mower runs like a charm! This is a testament to why one should support independent business owners. I have taken repair jobs to them previously, frequently screen doors and window screens for prescreening. I took a screen door in for repair in the fall in which there was a structural problem (wheel). It was repaired and returned for a nominal fee. Unfortunately, when I returned home I realized that the problem had not really been fixed. I phoned the store and the owner, Vince said to bring it back in. He subsequently explained that he was having difficulty obtaining the part and that he had sunk a significant amount of time into the project. I offered to take back the door, pay him for his time and call it quits. He insisted on finishing the job but that it would take time. Ultimately, he did fix the door and did not want to accept any additional payment. I insisted and he ultimately accepted a token payment. This store seems to be flourishing. Kudos to the owner, Vince. He deserves it and I hope they are here for a long time to come. read more

As the previous reviewer said, it's no big box store, but their staff has the knowledge and can tell you what you need to do to get the job done and fix whatever needs a fixin'! The idea of fixing things?!......absurd! The cost, the headache of the process,...why not just by a new one or call in a "PROFESSIONAL"?! AYD HARDWARE makes home improvement EASY!!!!!!!!!!!! I recently discovered that they have lawnmower repair service...in TOWSON! Brought in our Craftsman mower, that's now going on 6-7 years old, for a tune-up. It also needed a set of front wheels (wheels were bald as can be) for the self-propelled drive. NO messing around with a million forms to complete then hauling off your equipment to some random place with an "estimated completion date" as you would expect with the big box guys! This is how easy it was (our first time there for lawnmower service too!): 1) Leave mower in front of store. 2) Go in to counter and let em know what services you need. 3) One of the mechanical staff members come out in less than ONE MINUTE....I KID YOU NOT...ONE. (No wasting your life away, twiddling your fingers, and pacing back and forth through the endless aisles of Home Depot, while waiting for another staff member "not in the department" to get a person that works IN the department) 4) Go out and tell/show what's wrong and what you need done. They'll write it up. 5) Drop a $25 service deposit, and get your claim ticket. 6) DONE!....ALL IN ALL, less than 10 minutes in and out! Dropped it in late May 2012 on a Tuesday later afternoon = 430P. Received a call by 2PM the NEXT day that it was ready to go! Now, let it be said that they do get busy and turnover of getting YOUR mower back may be up to a week when really busy. They do their best to get it done ASAP. So don't be a JACK*** and give them a low review because you had to wait more than **YOU** expected. Just ask them and they'll be honest about how soon they think they can get it done. They also addressed the other issues - 1) got new wheels on the front for the drive system 2) straightened out, reshaped, and repainted the formerly rusty, loose pivot joint on the handle. AS GOOD AS NEW HANDLE! Tune-Up = $50 (oil change, air filter change, sharpening blades, lubricating the chassis) Wheels = $30 ($15 a pop - were used parts but not worn at all) Parts = $20 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cost = $100 Service doesn't get any FASTER, EASIER, AND AFFORDABLE than this! Now....gotta wonder what other stuff they fix? Ayd Hardware service......PRICELESS! =) Support the independent stores! ************************TIPS: ************************ PARKING: They've got 3 parking spots off the side road, south of the store. Last week my husband and I took a window and a door to have screens replaced. We were told that an $80.00 deposit was required. We then asked for an approximate cost of the screen repairs. We were told, " I don't know". Can't tell what it will cost until we "get into it". I said, you can't give an approximation based on past screen replacement? That's ridiculous. I've been an intermittent customer of Ayd Hardware for years; I'd be lost without them. I'm so grateful for the times I happen to go in and (a) find exactly what I need, (b) be on the receiving end of know-how and (c) fall into service PERFECTION as I did today. I went to Yelp yesterday to find where I could go to have a lamp rewired because I was avoiding the obvious place (for many reasons). The first several places on the list were either closed or do not perform lamp repairs - so that was annoying. But while I was driving out York Road to WH (place obvious) I stopped into Ayd on a whim and saw a Knight in Shining Armour standing at the back of the store re-wiring a lamp (I couldn't believe it!). And sure enough, he finished one and knocked mine out within 10 minutes (I supplied all the parts). Service like that is unheard of. I'm so grateful. Long live Ayd Hardware ~ read more

Fantastic local hardware store. Good location on York Road in North Baltimore; there is street parking and also a few perpendicular spaces on the left of the building. Ayd has a huge selection for a small store, and carries the particular unique hardware for the houses in the surrounding Rodgers Forge neighborhood, where the 1930s homes have required/strangely sized items such as front porch lights, windows etc. I have brought broken screens in twice, and they have done a great and fast job. I have purchased numerous other items there, such as trash cans, tools, keys. They are a bit more expensive than the big stores, but that is what you have to pay to keep dedicated smaller stores like this around. The service is far superior to Lowes or Home Depot. They also have convenient services such as lawn mower rental, for those who don't want to buy. Great place! read more

the owner is very rude. my partner and i parked in his parking lot assuming it was a general lot for the strip of stores. we went to get ice cream at the charmery and when we came back 10 minutes later, the owner confronted me when i was alone and was very aggressive. when my partner came over to see what was going on, he started cussing us out unprompted and threatened to call the cops or a tow truck if we didn't get off his lot that instant. he said very nasty things despite our attempts to be calm and civil. i would have simply moved my car if he asked nicely but he immediately resorted to cursing us out and being straight up cruel. read more

There is one pure reason love Ayd. In 10 years every key that I've had cut here worked. Like a boss. But it's got a great north Baltimore location, though parking on York can be tough. The staff is very friendly and quite knowledgeable. The selection can limited, due to the size, but it's quality and you're not missing the low-end stuff. I went in this morning to buy some electrical parts. The first associate I spoke with was very helpful, but while looking at parts I overheard another associate on the phone with a customer. The associate was actively discouraging a customer from wearing masking by trying to convince them that they don't work. There's no scientific evidence for that. In fact there's lot of evidence to the contrary. I found it incredibly problematic that the hardware store associate was trying to convince people out themselves and others at risk. I work just up the street and started coming here for the convenience of it and then realized that I'm pretty lucky to have a great hardware store in close proximity. There really aren't very many of these types of places around anymore. From having keys made to picking up snow shovels, drill bits or anything else that a hardware should carry this place pretty much has it in their small shop. Staff is always friendly and extremely knowledgeable. I was just up there today trading rat stories with a staff member. Yea, he had a purple beard and a Ravens jersey. It's Super Bowl weekend. Anyway, I found the right place because he has, well, he has a lot of experience in rodent-proofing a house. Hey, this is Baltimore. I try to support local businesses as best I can, but the lady who works there will make that difficult. The two times I was there she had a major attitude and made the experience awful. The product I purchased didn't work, so I had to return it. There was a return fee or something, but I was capable of getting store credit to avoid that, which means I have to go back at some point. read more

This family owned, service oriented hardware store is a welcome throwback to small town days when there was no turnover in staff, the workers were highly motivated and knowledgeable about virtually any home project and actually took the time to explain how to fix things for do-it-yourself guys. They are located in a very safe neighborhood of 70 year-old houses and they offer a unique understanding of the problems common in old house and solutions that will be the cure. That's not something as readily available at Home Depot or Lowes. Just as importantly, they will fix your lawnmower, snow blower, generator, screens, sharpen lawnmower blades, kitchen knvies....So it's not just what they sell on the shelves that distinguishes this store. I showed up at 5:55PM to get 1 key copied (somewhat of an emergency) and all of the employees were walking out of the store. This is a locally owned independent hardware shop in Towson. This is the sort of place that you do not see anymore- good old fashioned customer service and decent prices. I am sure that a big box store such as the Home Depot or Lowes has better prices and a wider selection, however I am happy to pay a premium because it is money well spent at AYD. I have made several trips into AYD and every time I have had a salesperson who is attentive, helpful and knows what they are talking about. They fix all sorts of things at reasonable prices as well. This is a great neighborhood hardware store. The staff is friendly and helpful. They sell dry ice when the power goes out, ice melt and sleds during blizzards, seeds and garden tools when it's warm, and they'll fix your screen in the summer. They have a great selection of typical hardware items. In a pinch, I'd rather come here for my needs than going across town to the mega hardware store. read more
