I have been buying here for many years but it's time to find a different nursery. Came in during the week and the staff to guest ratio was at least 5 staff to each customer...I wanted a tree that was too heavy for me to lift at roughly 70 pounds and literally none of the staff walking around offered to help. When I asked for help locating the tree, I was pointed to the other side of the nursery, but no thought to if I might either need help locating the trees or help lifting the container. read more

Extensive selection. The high quality of the inventory is noticeable. Purchased a couple of plant varieties that I'd never seen before: black & blue salvia and verbascum phoeniceum (purple). Both are doing well. There can be a wait to be checked out however it's understandable. Other folks are seeking excellent seedlings, shrubs, trees, etc., like I am. It's a drive for me, living in DC, but I do it. This nursery is locally owned--a plus. read more

Very friendly place with excellent customer service! We are newbie gardeners, the extent to which we know about plants and the like can be written in a postage stamp. So our first visit to a garden centre was kinda nerve racking. But thankfully the people here were happy to approach us as we looked totally lost. They use radios so if one person doesn't have the answers someone who does will chime in. So we got our roses, the stuff needed to look after them and compost to help them grow. As we crash into middle age, we are very likely to be repeat visitors here. read more

I've bought from Sun Nurseries thru the years...I obviously have dementia because I forgot how indifferent the workers are to meeting customers needs beyond the inventory...expensive tree bought, paid for delivery, paid for placing tree near hole ( yup, that's a thing now), said something about contact on Monday, assuming they would put us on a schedule for delivery, let us know when and time, you know, like EVERY BUSINESS IN THE WORLD!! But no! WE are to call them, THEY determine delivery without letting you know and said they don't contact customer because they have too many deliveries, but they have an arranged delivery date! You know who else is busy but calls?! Mulch companies! So do car repair businesses, so do many companies that deliver anything, so do Doctors and Dentists. Sun wants to risk us being home? They want to chance leaving a very expensive tree in our front yard BY the road, since this is the final destination. They are not too busy to SELL the tree, but don't ask for any other customer service. read more

My wife and I drive from south of Baltimore to go to Sun Nurseries. First, their website offers a spreadsheet of their inventory so I can research the plants to see if they will work where I want them to go. Second, their inventory is extensive and their stock is healthy. Finally, the salespeople are helpful and not pushy. In fact, my experience has been that they will not try to "upsell" to a more expensive option if there are reasons you will not benefit from it. read more

This is an ideal place to go pick up your decorative flowers, trees and the like to get that yard in shape. The employees are around and able to help point you in the right direction - and it's a largish place, so this is key. Prices seemed reasonable, and most of the plants were really healthy looking. As a note: They do offer free garden sketching I hope to take advantage of next year. Bring dimensions (and I would imagine photos would help) and they will make suggestions on what to get and where to pace it. My favorite thing about this place is the signage - perennials have a coded sign that will let you know if they attract butterflies, humming birds, are flood or drought resistant, and if they are native. I'm a bit put off by the native marking - since it just means "from the US" - not that it's native to Maryland. Local plants can help reduce water needs, and support local species - so a Maryland flagging would be nice. One thing to I never quiet figured out - do you pay for dirt/peat moss/mulch first, or pick it up first. The cashier told me I should have gotten if first and suggested I wait back in line (it was a long line). fortunately a more experienced cashier just had her ring it up and I went and got a bag from the the area when you head right out the front doors of the shop. I think my cashier was new, so I'm not holding that against them. read more

Great selection of shrubs, herbs and evergreens. The trees are just ok this time. Some maples and flowering trees needs a lot of love to get them in their attractive form. We came after the day of frost. Lots of trees did not look one would want to risk buying. Don't block this nursery due to this. Another season may be different. Helpful staff yet we declined. Prices seems same as others. The drive was scenic but too far for us. Lots of plants to see and discover. read more

Great selection of plants, like it is huge. What is amazing about this place, however, is how the staff goes over and above. Here is my experience. My wife and I went up to look for grape plants, specifically Concords. We walked around the grounds and consulted the map to determine where they would be. We found the area but it didn't seem there were any grape plants. I was resigned to head back home but my wife went inside to ask if they had any. One of the staff members said they weren't sure, but another said there definitely were some and gave her the directions to find them. We went out to look for said plants again, to no avail, and were about to give up and head home when the gentlemen that told her there were some showed up to check on us. They did not have any where he thought they would be, but he made a trip down to another area to search for us. He came back with exactly what we wanted, Concord grape plant, and then double checked to make sure we only wanted one. I told him I was actually looking for two, and he said no problem at all, asked me where I was parked, and told me he would meet me at my car with the second plant. Holy crap, service like this is almost nonexistent these days and I was shocked. I went inside, paid for the plants, and 2 minutes or so later the gentlemen showed up with the second grape plant. I didn't get his name, but this is pretty specific, the purchase was on June 17, and if you can figure out who it was please thank him again for me. The grape plants are doing great and I will only purchase from Sun Nurseries moving forward. Very well done not only on selection, but more importantly on your staffing and the level of care that is shown. read more

It was a pleasant experience. The staff is helpful to very helpful, there's a large variety of plants, and it's easy to move about and load up using carts. The place is gravel pathed so though a bit wet it's absent mud. They also sell soil and mulch which you pick from pics at checkout and someone will load for you if you wish. read more

Great plants. Good service.... Sort of.... Fair warning. If you are a senior, you get a 5% discount. Who knew??? You must tell them though and request it. My husband is pushing 80 and bought almost $500 of plants the other day. Today, he went back for mulch. He did ask if they were having a discount for Veterans Day. He's a veteran. That's when he found out about the 5% off on plants. He asked if he could have the discount applied on the mulch . No. Discount for being a veteran. No. Nothing. Such nice, knowledgeable, and helpful staff. A friend recommended this nursery to us. We picked a perfect redbud tree today to plant. It was really meaningful to us since we are planting this tree as a memorial to our baby son who passed away a year ago. Matt helped us buy the perfect one that had a varied green leaf, the redbud alley cat variety. He showed us the Eastern redbud, Ruby Falls, Merlot but we eventually went with the Alley Cat because of the variation in the green leaves. This nursery is geared towards people with gardens, and the selection is amazing. I'm an apartment dweller, so am a plant parent and this summer am trying to grow a few flowers on my balcony, but I love investigating different nurseries & garden centers. Sun did have a small but very nice selection of house plants, and some really nice & reasonably priced pots. read more

I have done a number of landscaping projects with trees and bushes from Sun Nurseries. One project in May 2020 included 116 trees and 160 bushes. They did an amazing install job! (took a week) Of the 116 trees, only 6 didn't survive after 1 year, and only 2 died after 2 summers. To me that tells the story of the quality plant material that they have on hand. They aren't just "trees", but they are trees that will thrive in most locations. Their stock is healthy and will do well even in harsh locations like street easements, and have a warranty replacement as well in case your tree doesn't make it. Their staff is easy going, knowledgeable and available if you want, but doesn't hover. They will even help with lifting and bringing plants to your vehicle. Their prices are fair as well. If you are there at a time when their trees look a little picked over, you can ask about whether they have something nicer available, or when new stock is coming in. I highly recommend them for the purchase of a either a single tree or a few bushes, or a full install. read more

Amazing customer service coupled with an extensive assortment of plants. We hired them for landscape design services and their on premise staff, support and creative were amazing. They were able to quickly and easily identify what plants would work for our very rocky property and need to hide a retaining wall. All this and the prices were great too! We were late getting our vegetable garden started this year so our close to home place were totally out of cucumbers. We were searching for cucumbers to plant in our garden when someone recommended Sun Nurseries. This place is seriously AMAZING!!! They had EVERYTHING we needed to get our vegetable garden started. We grabbed our cucumbers and also picked-up a few vincas for our front garden. A week later I discovered Lemon Verbena and had to have a plant of my own - sure enough, Sun Nurseries had me covered. WARNING - DON'T BUY FROM SUN NURSERIES We bought a number of perennial and annuals this past Spring. They seemed to have good quality plants, but as we discovered a week after planting, some of them died. We have a lot of experience with gardening and everything was planted correctly. When we went to return the dead plants, we discovered the fine print at the bottom of the receipt, no returns on annuals, bulbs, or indoor plants. We have never bought from a nursery that didn't stand behind their products. We will steer clear of Sun Nurseries. read more

This is my favorite spot for buying plants. There is an amazing inventory, with many hard to find varieties. The staff down to the ones that answer the telephones is is knowledgeable and very customer oriented. We recently purchased two weeping blue atlas and some Wygelas. We couldn't be happier with them. The selection is just OK. Unfortunately, the staff are not very friendly nor do they make any effort to respect your time. They must hire from a pool of former post office staff. I wish there were more nurseries in the area to choose from. It's clear they don't have a lot of competition. read more

Visiting this nursery is an outing in itself, kind of like a botanical garden. Plants are beautifully laid out and well labeled with gorgeous varieties of even common plants/trees. Very friendly, patient and highly knowledgeable staff! They will even help load your car, we were able to bring 4 trees, 4 shrubs and multiple bags of soil in our Jeep! They have a nice selection, especially perennials. I have my favorite annuals I also buy from Sun Nurseries. They also have a nice selection of pond plants. I think their plant prices are comparable to other small nurseries. I can't say much as far as their trees and shrubs quality, but they seem pricey. Some staff seem nice and willing to help you and others seemed downright annoyed when you ask for guidance. read more
