    Well dang it.

I came here on the Saturday right after Thanksgiving, hoping for the best while assuming the worst. When I arrived, there was a long stretch of cars down the road and lots of happy families piling trees onto the tops of them. Parking wasn't plentiful, but we managed to squeeze into a spot. Then we marched through the snowy mud, grabbed a saw, and off we went to the 'forest'. There were trees as far as the eye could see, and at least 8 different varieties and in various sizes. The process was quick and only slightly painful. Chopping the tree does involve getting very low to the ground, so I recommend bringing an old towel or blanket if you don't want to kneel in the snowy mud. It was also about 10 degrees colder and windier here than it was in DC, so dress warmly. You also might want gardening gloves that you don't mind getting sap on. The people who work here are very friendly and not at all overbearing sales people. They help you shake off your tree and wrap it in netting. Hot cider and a few christmas tchotchkes are sold in a nearby barnhouse. You can also buy wreaths or potted trees, too. I left with a huge blue spruce tree, a wreath, and a $10 potted dwarf pine tree (impulse buy, but it's so pretty). The trees are approximately $75-85, depending on the type and size you choose. Credit cards are accepted, even Amex. Feel free to bring your dogs and your children, just keep them all on a leash or else they will be turned into reindeer for Santa's sleigh.

We had an awesome experience at Davidson Tree Farms! For our first Christmas as a married couple we wanted a live tree. Davidson wasn't too far outside of the city and their prices looked fair. We arrived, borrowed one of their hacksaws, and tramped out to the fields. There were at least 8-10 different styles of trees. Our apartment has tall ceilings so we wandered around until we found one that looked perfect. They had helpers with a tractor and a wagon as well as handcarts. The prices are reasonable - $30-55 for 8.5 feet and under, $6 a foot after that. They shake the tree up for loose needles, bag it, and will drill a hole. They sell tree bags, tree stands, tree food, anything and everything you need to keep your tree healthy for the season. There is also a barn with cocoa, snacks, and hole made ornaments, all very well priced. The tree guys take credit cards but the snack barn is cash only. There are porta potties on site. All in all it made for a really wonderful memory- all down to the nice gentleman who helped tie our tree to re car. As long as we are in Maryland we will be getting our tree from Davidson Farms!

The kids enjoyed hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies, especially as it started to get colder.

Linda has great landscaping ideas and reasonable prices. We were referred to her through Howard…read moreCounty. She came out and installed a beautiful rain garden for us a few years ago. Now, she put together a plan to minimize the water flooding our backyard and ruining our grass so that we'll have more privacy and NO maintenance for our lawn and foliage. It included installing schip laurel trees that would spread across our back fence to provide privacy. She also installed - or shall I say her workers installed - a groundcover that was to spread across and keep weeds out. She said all we had to do was apply Preen each season, which we did religiously. Unfortunately, the ground cover was overtaken by weeds each of the past two summers and takes hours upon hours of weeding since we cannot mow over it all. The attached photo is just a tiny fraction of the weeds I pulled this mornin Two of the trees drowned within a year. Her team replaced them and now they've drowned again. We did have record rain over the past year. Linda did say even though it has been over a year since the install that she'd replace the trees with a more hardy variety that can withstand the water and revert our lawn back to grass, it has been two months since we discussed that and we're still waiting for it to happen. She cited that part of the delay was that they were really behind between all the rain we've had and a stall in getting her non-U.S. visa workers lined up. It took a long time, but Linda's team came back last year to replace the trees and they are finally flourishing!

And then again the following year, to plant bushes along the side of our house as well as a potted evergreen for our deck. The hardscaping came out beautiful; however, when we noticed it starting to crack, Linda Luke and her crew manager kept putting blame on us and then began ignoring my calls and emails. So I went to a local stone store to ask for their opinion and they said the crack was caused due to a lack of drainage. VG did not create proper drainage options for the hardscaped flower bed, causing the stone to crack. We are now left with a dilemma of either leaving the 7' crack as is or spending over $1000 to have the other stone company fix it properly...all because Linda would not take ownership of their work. In addition, our potted evergreen began losing it needles immediately and, once again, they did not take ownership of the issue and continued to ignore our complaints. Bottom line: Be aware, guaranteed work doesn't mean follow through and customer satisfaction.
