I was condescended to, bullied and threatened here today by a sales person and it was so shocking I don't know what to say. This dude was so instantly nasty to me, dismissive, condescending, just awful. I literally don't even know what I did wrong but try and buy a stack of books and try to get a discount cos I was buying a whole stack! Never ever before met a rude person here in the twenty years I've been coming (since before ravens stadium was built and they were across the street). I've bought thousands of dollars worth of appliances here (2 $500 stoves, a $1000 fridge, two dishwashers, and two washers and dryers), not to mention hundreds upon hundreds worth of lumber, trim, windows, doors, miscellaneous hardware, etc. I bought 400 dollars worth of upholstery cloth one time alone. I come in, I don't mess around, I know what I need and I am a friendly nice customer. (Because they use your phone number when you buy, also? they should be able to SEE this). I was buying BOOKS. Books are not their main business (and to be honest their prices are so out of scale it's crazy compared to thrifts--10 dollars each for a used hard over cover book from the 80s? I think there was one vintage item or two--I collect golden book kids encyclopedias) In the past they've basically tried to GIVE me books I wanted to buy! I wasn't buying anything from the "special glass cases. I asked Josh what they could do for me on these 20 books that I promise no one wants. (I promise). I picked up so many cos I have always been given a little break on stuff here! It's literally the way I thought they do business!!!! Nope. Not a single red cent. Off ANY book EXCEPT one they wanted 20 dollars for that didn't cost 20 new! (No it was not old or vintage!) I had 100 bucks of books in my cart he couldn't do 80? He wouldn't even discuss it and when I was frankly totally taken aback by this since it's so counter to EVERY EXPERIENCE IVE HAD THERE FOR OVER 20 YEARS--he threatened to call security on me!? For trying to bargain?????? These were all crap books. I want them for myself and to show my husband AND I make art from them. I'd have paid literally 10 for every set of four of these books at thrift. They wanted 10 and 15 dollars EACH. It wasn't just he wouldn't deal at all on price. He treated me like a criminal for no reason at all. He had his hand on his walkie talkie and when I kind of laughed just thinking he was driving a bargain he said he was going to call security on me!!!! He did this because I had the temerity to say "come on, not any discount at all? I'm buying in bulk!" And I mentioned I've never had them not come down on price on anything ever! I am a short, friendly 53 year old mom. fyi. What the living heck is going on with this place? It was SUCH an unpleasant and weird experience. I feel horrible. I entered looking for a book case, which i found, amidst all the treasures of Baltimore. I almost purchased outdoor furniture (it was December), a church adornment taller than my roof, some medical supply equipment, and a desk. None of which i need. This place is amazing. It's enormous. It's fun. The variety of things they have is incredible. It's busy. This is one of the largest architectural salvage resale places that I'm aware of. It also has a bit of a flea market vibe since they carry glass wear, vinyl records, appliances, furniture. Sometimes things can be a little pricey, but maybe that's because most things here are one of a kind or so very hard to find anywhere else. read more

My husband and I had each heard of this store before, but we visited for the first time yesterday. The store is a cross between the Home Depot, a thrift store, and maybe even an art gallery! If you are not familiar, this is a nonprofit that give a second chance to items that come from a variety of different places, as well as to folks who have hurdles to employment. Check out their website to find out more about their overall mission. My husband and I were overwhelmed with how large the facility was, and the vast variety of items they had to offer. My husband was in love with all of the different flooring and beautiful wood that have been salvaged from different places and was available for purchase at a fantastic price, compared to retail. There were some very cool items that had been dismantled from homes of local well-known folks, and even from a movie set. If you are looking for items for your home, or in the middle of doing a remodel, you might want to check this place out because they have so much amazing stuff. The photos we took were of some unique, and rather price the items that are available. However, rest assured, there are so many more items that are a lot more reasonable in price. Ive popped into Second Chance a few times and there's always some interesting stuff to buy. This past time I was so disappointed. Everything was in awful condition, filthy, and EXPENSIVE. We're talking easily double or triple what I would have expected to pay. Honestly some of the items you may as well purchase new for that price. Maybe because it's the new year? I won't go out of my way to return but if I'm in the neighborhood, I guess I'll pop in to explore. Hopefully this was a fluke! read more

went to donate a nice antique mission oak cabinet I no longer have room for. got it in ellicott city years ago. it was in the back seat of my Toyota suv. pulled up to open the rear passenger door and attendant was yelling that I had to "back in" to the space. so I pulled my car around to back in. backed in. then he started yelling that my car wasn't "between the lines" and I had to pull out and re-back in until I was properly between the lines. there were no other donators in sight and about 5-6 spaces. delivery would have taken less than one minute. Veterans, beware--these aren't the deals you think they are. I came in to buy a used twin bed frame priced at $74. This was my third visit, and in the past, associates were usually willing to offer 20-30% off older furniture. This time, the associate refused to adjust the price at all. I mentioned that I could get a similar (better quality) bed for $100 on ShopMyExchange.com, which he insisted wasn't possible--until I showed him the listing on the app. Even then, he refused to budge. I walked away and won't be returning. If you find a flexible associate and you're only looking for older wooden pieces, you might catch a deal. Love, love, love this place.  If you're a thrifter, a DIY-er or enjoy the show American Picker then you would really enjoy stopping in and checking out Second Chance. They have everything.  By everything I mean I've seen sinks, bedroom furniture, bathtubs, church pews, entertainment centers, hotel furniture, gorgeous vintage glasses, doorknobs, vintage cookware, sewing machines, typewriters, paintings, pianos, lamps, you name it they probably have it.  I recently moved into an apartment and really like vintage furniture, kinda dislike modern so I knew I would furniture my place with second-hand items.  So far, I've found a lovely dresser, brass wall art, vintage plates, and wine glasses.  Prices are fair!  I really like the sliding pay scale.  Every week or so an item doesn't sell the price goes down.  The dresser I purchased is wood with a leather top.  It was initially priced at $90 bucks.  I went a week later and it was priced at $78.  By the time I got to the register I was able to talk the salesman into a deal.  I ended up paying only $60 bucks for that beautiful dresser.  Heading back soon for more unique pieces!! read more

I read the one-star reviews (because I thought maybe I was missing something). I can't speak for the way this place "used to be" run, but I've gone twice in the past 12 months, and both times I've been impressed with the inventory, organization, and service. Second Chance is Lowes-meets-Goodwill for furniture, appliances, decorum, fixtures, and other hardware. Look, nothing is new. Nothing. It's literally in the name. Some of the stuff is a little odd (a gaudy mantle with a Cherubin shoving a pipe into their ear, anyone?) and some is on its fourth or fifth chance. But, you never know what you're going to find and that's the beauty of this place. If you want a certain item with a specific look in great condition, go to a big box store and order it. This is where you go to peruse items for consideration, save home goods from landfills, or to fill a very specific need for a reasonable price. I can't speak for the sell/trade/donate side. I'm only talking as a consumer. I wish all cities had a store like this to create a community of exchange, be more environmentally mindful, and provide job training to serve the community. read more

Full disclosure: I didn't buy anything at Second Chance. But I did wander around and ooooh and ahhhh. Second Chance is a resale store specializing in home renovation materials. Need hardwood floors? They've got 'em. Need a pretty new Viking stove or a whole Viking appliance set? They have it! Need tile? Yep, they've got it. Need a fireplace surround that will make you feel like you own 19th century Baltimore mansion? Sure, they've got that too. They also have furniture, art, and more. It's pretty amazing. Second Chance deconstructs buildings and homes and salvages usable materials. It's an amazing business (reusing, saving, and preserving materials that would otherwise go in a landfill)! Humongous salvage store in West Baltimore. They have almost everything from small door knobs to large furnitures. Although I did not have anything in my agenda to purchase anything, I really loved walking in the store and checking out various things like tiles, pool tables, sofas, wardrobes etc. Pool table was priced at a very nominal price. The quality is almost new. It's priced around $2200 but the price drops next month by 50%. Do check it out if you plan to buy one. The store is pretty cold in the winter so If your planning to visit the cover yourself with winter wear. read more

Items here are priced very reasonably. The selection is IMMENSE; you will not be prepared for how large the warehouse is. Each time you think you've reached the end, there's MORE! This is a wonderful place to pick up all kinds of items for your home - furniture, appliances, sinks, art, lights, etc. The staff are very helpful, nice, and friendly. I scored a working Polaroid camera from the 1980's for $15 and was absolutely thrilled. Just be careful when driving in - the road can be a bit bumpy! read more

I must've said "this place is amazing" at least ten times while shopping for an antique buffet table today. It is a huge place, and they literally have anything and everything you can imagine for your home. Be prepared to spend time wandering and admiring everything. I found the buffet I was after and got a great deal on it. I also took home a very vintage lamp for $18.50. I am so happy I found this place. I love wandering through this place now that im a home owner. There is so many small treasures here. I have come across things as large as cabinetry and furniture to as small as fixtures and books. Ive been tempted a few times but haven't made any purchases as of yet. Last time I went I was looking specifically for bathroom sinks and didnt find anything I loved at a price I was willing to pay for second hand. I will say its a fun way to spend a Saturday morning but dont come in with expectations, go with an open mind and let adventure find you. read more

Could they have come up with a more apropos name than Second Chance? This nonprofit stays true to its mission of providing people, materials, and the environment with a second chance. Their store is massive at 200,000 square feet. The size is overwhelming when you walk in in a positive way. What impressed me more so than the sheer size was how meticulously organized this retail center was, how welcoming and friendly the staffs were, and how reasonable/transparent they were with pricing given the quality of their items. I just wish I had more time to really look through individual items. It's definitely worth stopping by if you are near Baltimore! read more

Neat stuff, but just had an unfortunate experience with the CEO at the store and will not be returning. He's apparently too important to follow the Mayor's mask mandate indoors, and would not honor a purchase after the transaction was made. If this guy could've just said, "I'm sorry for the confusion, let me reprice this for you," the situation would have been unfortunate, but not the piss poor experience it turned into. I bought a chair with pricing provided by an employee, and then they would not give it to me because the CEO said it should've sold for more. Getting that answer from him took 25 minutes minutes bouncing back and forth around the store trying to get clarity and he was extremely unpleasant about it. Basically, he was nasty to me about a mistake his employee made, and was not even remotely concerned about finding a solution or speaking to a customer in a respectful or professional manner. The backstory: i saw a nice midcentury modern chair without a price on it and an employee radioed someone else to provide a price. He said it would be $20 or $25 dollars, and I said I'd take it. Even though it's a small chair, they told me to pick it up at the loading bay after paying for it at the register. After waiting at the loading bay for a few minutes, an employee told me the chair was not for sale and that I had to go back to get a refund. I went back to the register to ask what happened and that I'd already paid for it. An employee said it wasn't for sale, then another employee said to let me have it. I then went back to the loading dock and waited and waited. No one seemed to know where the chair was or why it wasn't for sale. A very nice manager named Brandon said that the CEO said it wasn't for sale. I asked to speak with the CEO so that I could explain I'd already paid for it. Turns out, he knew but just didn't care, and was angry with me when he eventually came over like I was trying to scam him, repeatedly saying, "we all know the chair's worth more than that". No, I don't know that. There were no manufacturer marks on the chair and I couldn't tell whether the frame was plastic or wood, but it was cute and I liked the style of it. He wouldn't even offer another price for it, saying it was probably worth $400. I'm not sure if I would've paid $400 for it (or if that's even what it's worth) but I would've paid more than the original price and would have appreciated the opportunity to do so. Advice for the board: get your executive anger management training. My donation dollars will be going elsewhere. read more

I'm so in awe of this place. There's endless rooms of gorgeous furniture to look at, plus art and kitchenware... it was really awesome to make my way through as a new homeowner and find treasures. I wasn't in the market for much larger furniture so that part was just fun to see and imagine who the right new owner will be. I love this place. So many things to look at, and I love the idea that everything is getting a second chance.

Everyone deserves a second chance. And that's exactly what Second Chance of Pigtown in Baltimore, Maryland, has to offer. We visited the giant warehouse of Second Chance-- 25,000 square feet of parts and furnishings that have been salvaged from homes. We enjoyed walking the floors and just perusing the different cool items for sale here. They put the good stuff up front-- this is a great place to allow yourself be pulled into Second Chance. There was furniture, architectural elements, stained glass windows, flooring, artwork, and doors. (Really, the only thing that is not here is clothing and kid stuff.) I even saw bags of recycled insulation. Some of the architectural details are rough others are more pristine-- they are fun to look at. I was thrilled to find the old Bel Loc Diner sign here. This former diner (demolished and now replaced by the corporate coffee overlords) was an important part of my youth. *sigh* But the iconic sign survives in the giant warehouse of Second Chance in Bmore. This place is huuuuuge on the inside and we loved walking it. (Next time I'll wear boots to be more comfy on the concrete floors.) The variety of stuff here and the organization also, is really impressive and fun. I especially loved the old church pews and stained glass windows-- so beautiful and antique. It's kind of what Restoration Hardware really wishes it was. I imagine many good contractors are regulars here. You can buy a newish set of kitchen cabinets and new marble counter tops for cheap. Some of the furniture was intriguing and in great condition, other furniture was more bonfire worthy-- different price points I guess. ;-) There were also hot water heaters, garbage disposals, sinks, toilets, tools, safes, chairs, plates/dishes, books, statues, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and restaurant equipment. Lots of cool old stuff, creepy stuff, and lots of unusual weirdness. There is a huge parking lot and there is also a public restroom! This place could not get any better. A worker pulled me aside to answer questions and to tell us more about Second Chance. It's not just the furnishings that are for sale here that get a second chance. Many of the workers are former felons and homeless people who needed a place to work. I like that, because I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. I look forward to coming back to Second Chance every so often to see the new merchandise and just enjoy the experience of seeing so many beautiful treasures. read more

Here is what you can expect to find at Second Chance: - Items salvaged from historic homes like lighting fixtures, banisters, doors, hardware, hardwood floors, claw-foot tubs, cast iron gas stoves, etc. - Used but still usable "modern" items like sofas, rugs, major appliances, entertainment cabinets, etc. - Items from schools and restaurants like desks, chairs, tables and professional kitchen equipment - Inspiration for renovating your homes and tons of DIY projects - Friendly staff Here are some tips for visiting Second Chance: - Avoid visiting on game day because I think Second Chance sells many of their parking spots for Ravens and Orioles games, plus avoid the traffic - This is a huge old warehouse and with that comes a lot of walking and no heat or air conditioning so wear comfy shoes and dress appropriately. On hot days you might want to bring a bottle of water. - Inventory turns over quickly so come often to check out the "new" old items (As seen on HGTV's House Hunters Renovation) read more

Coming here is like a diy'ers Disneyland. One of the coolest places I've ever been. My children and I go sometimes just because. Every household item you need is there from toilets and sinks to toasters and microwaves. Wood, tile, pavers, outdoor statues, etc. please keep in mind a lot of the items are antiques or are high end brands and priced as such (it's still much lower than a regular store). Take your time and look high and low...possibilities are endless. Staff is usually pretty friendly and eager to help. My only draw back...due to the nature of the warehouse, in the summer it is super stuffy and hot. Which can make for uncomfortable shopping, and if you're anything like me, a headache. There are fans placed around the building, and they help when you walk by one. read more

This is one of the coolest scrap places I've been to - and that's a long list. Their selection was incredible and their prices unbeatable. There is a great pricing model of lowering the price the longer an object is unsold, so there's really great picks and prices throughout. In one trip we got a desk, a copy of an old movie (that you can't stream anywhere), two German beer mugs collected from a castle set, and a miniature lighthouse figurine that lights up. Make this the place to furnish your apartment or pick up a new piece to refurbish.
