Outstanding customer service from a very knowledgeable staff! They may cost a couple bucks more than Home Depot but it is way worth the price. I'm not even sure they do cost more than Home Depot. When I first moved to Baltimore I used to wonder how this tiny hardware store could stay in business. It didn't take long to realize that the lack of any large hardware store in this part of Baltimore leads you to come here for those odd one-off trips (short one screw, need a pipe adapter, etc). Every time we went here we were greeted warmly and staff took the time to answer all of our questions and give recommendations. When we had keys made or plexiglass cut to size the results were fantastic. You can buy everything from a Baltimore recycling bin to salt for the winter. I have never failed to leave with my problem solved or my item list being filled. read more

Terrific, family run hardware shop reminiscent of a small town five & dime. Almost everything you need for any home improvement project is in stock and the staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Don't expect piles of lumber, but everything from snow shovels, to trash cans, to paint, to plumbing parts, to odds and ends are always available. Walk in knowing that there's a $10 minimum to pay with plastic. Support your local, family businesses and go to Falkenhan's. read more

I always feel very assisted to my liking here. The store is just spacious enough with the general flow of people. The building is old and very neat to walk in. I enjoy walking the isles and observing how they've managed to fill the walls/ organize all that hardware so well. VERY knowledgable main staff. I cannot count how many times I've bounced questions off them and was given great responses. They really know what they're talking about and are honest and straightforward. Based on all the great reviews I read about this place, I'm really disappointed. I just called to ask about turning a bottle into an oil lamp. All I need are a few washers, bolts and some cotton wicks. The guy who answered couldn't have been less helpful. "We don't have things to make an oil lamp." When I explained what I'd need he said they had it. I said I'd bring the bottle and YouTube video so we could figure it out together, he said "uh huh" like I'd told him his dog was dying. Guess what? I also needed new lightbulbs and trash cans. Think I'm going to come shop here now? Listen, Mr. Whoever answered the phone. Maybe you can act that way if you are the only hardware store in a 50 mile radius. But you're not. Bye!!! read more

Watch your head! They have low ceilings and they don't mark them. When I whacked my head, the hipster behind the counter couldn't be bothered to ask if I was okay. They seemed completely unconcerned about me or padding the low beams. read more

I have been to Falkenhan's about 20 times over the years. They had a perfect record until my most recent visit. They had always been kind, welcoming and well-informed. During the most-recent visit, at least two (and arguably four) employees were impatient, unkind and/or unwelcoming. Perhaps I caught them at a bad time. Perhaps I mis-phrased my questions. Regardless, it was an unpleasant experience. That said, the previous 19 or so experiences were pleasant and this time, as always, they did have what I needed. So, I gave them four stars and I'm still a fan. read more

This is a fantastic store. I came in needing a whole set of screws and bolts for a table that had been lost during a move. These guys took the time to work through my pieces of furniture and find the correct ones. Also gave a bunch of tips on how to make it happen. I did like that Falkenhan's is a small hardware store. Quick in and out usually. However it's pretty impossible to find anything in there without asking. The place is pretty packed to the brim. (I guess that's part of the Charm!) Sometimes I just prefer finding something on my own though. read more

Needed a submersible utility pump in anticipation of a flooded basement from yet another Baltimore deluge. Took a chance on Falkenhan's several days after the nice people at the ACE Hardware in Waverly inadvertently sold me the wrong kind of pump. I'd never set foot in Falkenhan's but live nearby and want to patronize local stores, not big boxes a half hour away on an interstate. The store's resident cat, Copcar, wouldn't let me proceed without petting him while he noisily purred approval. I walked inside, said what I wanted, and in less than 5 minutes I walked out with exactly what I came for: a submersible utility pump, for less than Home Depot lists the same model on their website. The sales clerk was knowledgeable about what kind of pump I'd need for a flooded basement, moreso than the (nevertheless genuinely nice and helpful) people at ACE. Seriously, Falkenhan's and all their staff are great. The store is insanely packed full of basically anything I have needed for a variety of home projects--from canning to recovering chair cushions to hanging curtains to replacing an obscure, hard-to-find light bulb that they helped me match to the right size (and it worked!). I didn't even realize this place was there because their sign is easily missable compared to the rest of Hampden's NOTICE ME aesthetic but they are so great. The staff have always known what I needed, are not remotely rude/condescending to female customers, and will help find stuff since the store isn't in big aisles like Home Depot/Lowe's. They know what you need before you even open your mouth, and if on the slim chance they don't have it they know who does. Happy to support this place for the last decade. Great local hardware store. Prices are very reasonable, and for a tiny space they have a decent selection of stuff. The best thing is that the people who work there are very very helpful. I have an old house, and they are great at explaining the ins and outs of plumbing and electrical fixes and will spend time telling you how to do stuff even if you're just buy $8 worth of stuff. Prices are competitive with big box stores and it's great to be able to get in and out in minutes. read more

This place is AWESOME! When I moved to Hampden 3 years ago, I had the same thought about how this place could still function in the age of big box stores. It took me about 3 months after I bought my house (doing major renovations) for them to know me and my dogs by first name. What I quickly realized was that Hampden is a small town in a big city, and that Falkenhan's is the small town hardware store. Many local contractors, plumbers, electricians, etc use them because there is so much construction and renovation going on in Hampden that there is no need to go a minimum of 10 miles to Home Depot. They have everything you need, but in a smaller quantity. If they don't have it that day, they can get it in a few days. The only drawbacks are that they don't carry lumber (but they don't claim to be a lumber yard) and that they are not open on Sundays. I just plan everything I need for the weekend projects and buy it all on Saturday. Being that it is 2 blocks from my house, I have been known to make 4-5 trips there in one day. read more
