I've brought two vintage receivers here. One had static coming our of the speaker and headphone outputs (something I wrote down to specifically check out) and one I just brought for a general tuneup. The one that buzzed still buzzes and the one that was cleaned had problems with the phono stage after only a few hours of use. I want to em it back but I don't want to be charged the 80 bucks for an overview when they should have done their jobs right the first time. They also took like a month and never called me. OK so case in point, I had a pair of Optimus Speakers (13" woofers) that I used professionally even though you really shouldn't. Over years of use (and a DJ that didn't watch the levels) they were toast. I called these guys up and drove from San Francisco to have them fixed. In the end, I couldn't be happier. I've probably got a life extension of 15 years on these speakers and it didn't even cost me an arm or a leg. They sound great! If you have speakers that are messed up for whatever reason, call these guys before you throw them out and buy new ones. read more

I've very good experience to do Hi Fi repairs in Sertech. Norm is professional and easy to work with. Their fees are reasonable. My Musical Fidelity A1008 Integrated amp (made 2007) mal functioned. A DC current burned many components in the amp as well as damaging badly a B&W 802 Matrix 3 speaker (made 1998). After contacting several electronic repair shops to no avail, Sertech got the work done. They are busy (4 weeks waiting time), but what they said they delivered. My case took longer but it is understandable since they need to order special parts. Overall I recommend them highly without reservation. read more

Needed a plug replaced on my Sennheiser headphones which had been caught in airplane seat. Most places wouldn't or were not able to do a small job like this. (very delicate wires) Found Sertec on Yelp and took my problem to Norman. He said it might not be fixable but he would give it a try. He called me the next day and said he was able to replace the plug and my headphones were working fine. Cost me $30. Had previously contacted Mfg and they said send it in and it would be minimum of $60 plus mailing. I would highly recommend him. read more

I'll start off by saying that Sertech did repair my Yamaha surround sound system successfully. They charged me an $80 diagnostic fee. (I saw in one of the other reviews they only charged $30 on a surround sound system so I'm not sure why there was a difference in fees.) The guy told me it would be about a week before they could get to it. I could tell that they were fairly busy and I have become pretty good at reading people. I didn't think they would contact me a week later to let me know what they found so I called them a week later and they hadn't gotten to it. They told me to call back the next day. When I called back they said they were in the process of looking at it and to call back later that day. When I called back they gave me a price of over $300 to repair my 8 year old $400 system. I said never mind fixing it then, it's not worth it. The guy on the other end of the phone sounded disappointed that I didn't give them the OK. I figured I was now out $80. I got a call about an hour later and the guy now says that he might be able to repair it for $80 instead of $300. I said for that price go ahead and fix it. They fixed it and it only cost me $160 total. I have to wonder now why they quoted me over $300 initially and then lowered the price after I rejected the first price. I kind of felt they were trying to get more out of me if they could. As I said before I listen to my gut more now that I am older and I kind of got a weird feeling from this place. read more

Not a big fan of writing bad reviews, but need to let others know. Brought my footswitch pedal for guitar amp. Needed to fix quickly as I play gigs. They said that could do it an a couple of days. Asked them if I need to bring my amp and they said that there is o need in it as they have all the means to test the part. Charged me $79 upfront, I was worried about it since all other repair shops I have only charged me when the work is done and demoed. That was my mistake. They called in a couple of days and said it is ready. When I brought it home and tried the problem became even worse. Called them back and it appeared they did not have equipment to test it, do not know what they fixed, but clearly not the problem I had. So I brought the amp and demoed it. Well they said they will call manufacturer to get the right part for replacement and promised to call me back next day. Nobody called. I had to call back a day after hearing all kind of excuses and that the issue is more complex and they need more info from me. I already got my gig messed up and was going to have the next one messed up as well. So we were back to square 0 with the problem. I was unhappy with the service and asked for my money back as nothing was fixed. They refused. They get to keep my $79 for not getting the problem fixed. My recommendation: 1. Do not trust this business, 2. In general, do not pay upfront for repair, only after it is fixed and demoed. read more

More excellent service from Sertech! After the repair below, Norm offered to order a spare pair of relays for me so that if I ever needed to have him replace them again, we wouldn't have to wait for the supplier to provide them (apparently they are hard to get). Norm kept after the supplier for 3 months until he could finally get me a backup pair. I picked them up yesterday. So now I'm ready in case my amp has this problem again (NAD 2200 amps are known for burnt contact problems). While I was there, Norm showed me some of the speakers he builds. They are hand made, 150 hours of work goes into each pair and you get to choose the woods and finish. They sound awesome, and the amazing thing is that they operate on only 1 amp! It's crazy. They were hooked up to a monster Sony power amp (500 watts) but you could see that the speakers, even at very loud levels, were pulling less than an amp. I imagine they would be excellent for pairing with vintage tube amps, but Norm said that they handle powerful amps just as easily. There are even built in controls for adjusting the speakers to the room dynamics. If you are looking for high end speakers, give Norm a call and go for a listen. Sertech is the best place to take your electronic equipment for repair. They are first class techs, have great attitudes and are willing to go the extra step to make sure you are satisfied. read more
