My husband and I have been to Portugal a few times and absolutely love how fresh and yummy the sandwiches are there. We popped into Serra Doce for a quick bite, with hopes it would live up to our memories of Portugal, and it did not disappoint! I got the crispy chicken sandwich and he got the Sera Sandwich. We then split a pastel de nata. The service was very polite and explained what some of the menu items were for us, and our sandwiches came very quickly. Each sandwich was super hot and fresh. I especially liked the crispy chicken sandwich and will definitely be returning for it. It was simple but the chicken was crispy, the bread was fresh, and it was loaded with fresh veggies. The pastel was just okay for us, but we ate pastel snobs. It didn't really compare to the ones we had in Lisbon, but it is comparable to some of the better bakeries in Newark. The ambiance was also very cute. It's self-seat and casual, but that was perfect for our quick lunch stop. They also have a cute nook if you prefer some privacy. read more

This Portuguese and Brazilian coffee shop and bakery translates to "Sweet Mountain" and they live up to their name! The variety of drinks, food, and pastries is plentiful, and everything I had tasted so so good! The space is open with a nice wraparound counter by the large front window, there are a good amount of tables, and they did a nice job with the area where you'd get napkins and straws, etc. ... the employees were helpful in deciding between coffees and had no problem that we also walked in with bagels from next door and ate them there which we appreciated! read more

Walked in and waited patiently at the register, cashier with glasses didn't acknowledge us and we were the only people in line. My friend had asked if the matcha refresher was made with milk and the cashier rudely said "well yeah, it's a matcha" and rolled her eyes, i've seen matcha lattes made with milk and refreshers made with lemonade or water so i think that comment was so rude and unnecessary. I noticed the cashier walked out drinks and food to two other people in the lobby and just called out my order one by one, no big deal except when i said thank you she didn't even turn around and walked away. Matcha was okay, but if you don't wanna seem like you're bothering employees you're better off going to the starbucks next door. read more

I loved studying here! It was a cozy and mostly quiet coffee shop in such a great neighborhood. What I assume was the owner and her workers were very kind and super helpful navigating the menu and what I should get. I ended up getting a banana nut muffin, which was cooked nicely with a nice crunch on top. I did not get to finish it because I was full from eating breakfast at home, but I enjoyed it all the same. WOW. Nothing but fantastic things to say about Serra Doce. Karolina and I met a friend here and it was SUPER cute. The cafe has a lot of space. It's also nicely situated near the Summit train station making it really convenient for travelers. We both ordered Raspberry Hibiscus iced tea ($3). You get a lot, for what you pay for. We were pleasantly surprised. Additionally, the tea was really nice, just sweet enough to not be bitter, but not artificially sweetened. It was the perfect refreshing drink for a sunny Saturday in Summit. We also split the Serra Sweet Apple sandwich ($8.50) with jam, apple, cheese, and glaze balsamic on wheat bread. It was amazing. The crunch of the tangy apple paired with the saltiness of the cheese and sweetness of the glaze balsamic and jam was well done. I don't typically choose apple on sandwiches, but I appreciated this. Friendly staff and PLENTY of options when it comes to baked goods (gluten free options available), cold pressed juices, drinks and food! I didn't realize this was a Portuguese place until they made my coffee. I ordered a pastry and a small coffee with milk. They heated up the milk with the steamer. The coffee was too hot for me. It was good but too hot hence a reduction in one star. The pastry was good. It had coconut in it but I think Just flavor and not flakes. There were so many choices of desserts to eat. The service was good and didn't rush me and brought my food to my table. The ambiance is that of a quaint coffee shop. I would come back but let them know not to heat up the milk. This is the best cafe in Summit, a tiny town cluttered with a glut of bean slinging caffeine fueling stations for the transitory. But not here. You don't come here to grab and dash but to sit and live a while. They have the finest staff for starters: kind, full of life, attentive, industrious, and genuine. There's little turnover and you learn their names and they learn yours not as a Jedi Barrista mind trick but as a genuine sense of community. They care. These aren't clock watchers. And on the many days I try to make it there, I feel strangely like a secret king that the world missed the coronation of. A minor king perhaps banished from a kingdom I never knew. As I nestle in my favorite comfy throne and slowly ingest the delectable food and lively coffee, I always feel cared for - about. I feel as though I matter a bit. The victuals I order are brought to me and rested upon what appears to be a redwood table, cut from the trunk of a living thing far older than I'll ever become. A once mighty being now sliced and mounted on iron legs to support food and drink not for a secret king but simply a fellow who doesn't receive a scintilla of this accommodating kindness anywhere else. Don't see fresh beef empanadas or chicken croquettes? Ask! Made fresh! Mere steps away is the incredible Serra restaurant through the back. They make most of the mouth watering food the cafe serves. AGAIN: they will make them fresh for you. For you. Your very own food. Not stale factory food that comes sealed in a days-old bag thrown at you by servers in sullen bondage - but fresh food given to you fresh faced kindly souls just for you. Our lives change as do we and these oases, these peaceful places that beckon us to relax and enjoy life before rushing on truly mean so very much to us when they're gone. It's often said we're lucky not to know our ultimate fates. All ends. But I find really appreciating people and places that matter to you BEFORE they're gone are a form of preservation of the pieces that make up who we are and preserve the breadcrumb trail through existence. Don't wait to miss this cozy cafe. Patronize it now. Enjoy it now. Support it and tip! It is a fine place to relax or do some reading. Maybe a light conversation. The seating arrangements are stellar, that is for sure. They get great light and a nice view of the train station area. I didn't exactly love the smoothie I got and my partner didn't enjoy the coffee there. So, that is a bit disappointing for a coffee shop. The pastry we got was nice enough, probably a bit stale but we did go at the end of the afternoon so maybe that is to be expected. The staff were those types that expected a tip for only pushing a few buttons. Their eye roll was very obvious; didn't even try to hide it. I wouldn't necessarily return as I am not a huge fan of coffee shops in general anyway but even if I was, I'd go somewhere else. Stopped in for breakfast with my Daughter this past weekend and tried their breakfast sandwiches. Outstanding flavor and made fresh and served with a smile by the friendly ladies there. I got the Portuguese sausage with mozzarella and gravy made in a pressed grill. So flavorful and just so damn good. My Daughter had the ham, mozzarella and tomato sandwich prepared similarly and she really liked it. Coffee was delicious. We had natas (egg tarts). Which were heated up and fantastic. Got some sweets to bring home: coconut Natas; Portuguese donut; and Portuguese coconut sweet bread. All yummy although I prefer the egg tart over the coconut. Give this place a try. Was walking around Summit and walked past this place and it was much cuter inside than I expected. I got a chai tea latte with a shot of espresso which was good but nothing to write home about. Their coffee was alright (and reasonably priced), but I wasn't a fan of the pastries. The truffles all had the same strong flavor of condensed milk (w a touch of coconut, or chocolate, or vanilla). The nut truffle was the best. The others I wouldn't order again. The donut wasn't very fluffy, and it was cold/stiff, so I wasn't the biggest fan. I like that they have oat milk. Stopped by to get iced coffees while running errands. I got a cold brew with a splash of Oatmilk and my wife got an iced decaf coffee with a splash of almond milk. The interior was really nice and the staff was pleasant; however, the coffee was not good. Both of our coffees had a bizarre taste to it and both tasted very watered down and more or less like flavored water. Not what I expected, especially for a cold brew. The coffees were not cheap either at just about $10 for the two. I will maybe give them another shot and try something different, but with so many other small coffee shops and cafes around town, they are not on the top of my list. read more

Later when I was setting up my table the cashier called me over to get my 2 coffees and danish on a slab of wood tray. I was afraid to spill anything on my way to the table. The pastries here are not fresh. I have been here once before and it was good. I had their donut which was a little too dry for me but it tasted fine. But today I went and got a brownie and for some reason it smelt and tasted strange kind of like cleaning supplies. I went back and got another pastry which was the giant cup cake and it had the same taste and smell. What i discovered after was that the middle tasted normal which makes me concerned that they are spraying cleaning solutions that could have gotten on the food. I mean no harm to the bakery or the workers just spreading awareness. read more
