This has been my go-to coffee shop every weekend for the last couple of years. To put it simply, their coffee is fantastic. Specifically, their cold brew which is extremely smooth and strong, and in my opinion you don't even need to put anything in it unless you really want something sweet, although why would you get a cold brew if that's the case lol. Also packs quite a bit of caffeine so you'll be good for the rest of the day. Their pastries are pretty solid as well, although a bit on the pricier side. The cafe itself is on the smaller side but still an ample amount of seating. It's excellent for meeting with a friend, however the tables are rather small so it is less study friendly unless you manage to snag one of the bigger tables by the entrance. Which is admittedly pretty tough to do unless you get here right when it opens or catch a lucky break when someone leaves - I speak from experience. That said, it's overall a pretty solid spot to get work done. Parking in downtown Summit is a pain in general, I usually just park in the lot and walk over. Limit is at 5 hours and you will have to walk back if you want to extend it. There might be parking available by the cafe, but I'm personally less confident on how long you can to stay before getting ticketed/booted, so do so at your own risk. read more

Tried this coffee spot twice. The first time, the staff wasn't very warm or helpful. When I asked for recommendations, I was just told to check the menu. I ordered the coconut coffee which was okay, just a bit too sweet for my taste. The second time around, I looked over the menu ahead of time and tried a matcha. So I had it in my head that Boxwood Coffee was a big chain like Gregory's Coffee. Which in fact has only 50 or so locations. Which is still a chain. Starbucks has over 36,000 locations. Dunkin. Or Dunkin Donuts as we used to call them has 13,000 locations. Boxwood has two. Very local. Very focused on ethical sourcing. Very cute inside. I happened to walk in this morning when the boxes were still in the counter so I guess the pastry is from Balthazar's but hey you could do a lot worse and if Balthazar is baking it every morning what's the difference? I had a pistachio cream croissant. They have a selection of pastry. Little chest of beverages. Very clean. Cozy. I ordered a cappuccino and honestly the only negative was it took forever. Honestly so few people at 7 am and all of them were waiting for their order. 15 minutes? Maybe a little less. But not fast. Great cappuccino. I am buzzing from it. In a good way. I will definitely be going back. It had a little leaf drawn in the foam. Service was good. Just slow. Boxwood if you are reading this, and I don't see why you wouldn't as I am a Yelp elite and currently an All-Star and author of a very popular book (see my profile, no spoilers here). I was around this area today & decided to try boxwood coffee for the first time. Service was amazing, the lady at the counter was very sweet & very attentive as soon as I walked in. Ambiance was chill, you can sit there and do some work & study. I ordered an ice latte, with coconut milk. I wish I could've order a flavor with it but it slipped my mind. The latte was pretty decent, it was my fault for not ordering a flavor to it. But loved the coconut milk to it, tasted natural. read more

Right in the heart of downtown Summit, Boxwood Coffee is the kind of place that makes you want to become a regular. Upon walking in, it strikes a balance between cozy and modern, with a warm welcoming atmosphere. Love that they have pour over coffee here and freshly roasted beans for purchase. I normally order a regular coffee but when I saw the menu for their seasonal lattes and the Caramel Delite Girl Scout Cookie Latte was on there - I had to get it and I'm so glad I did because it was delicious. The staff is friendly and the service was quick. Nice ambiance in this coffee shop and we were there early in the morning and the staff was friendly and helpful. As a sucker for really good coffee, I opted for an expensive pour-over ($8 for a small) and the flavor of the coffee made evident the precision of the roasting done here but the coffee itself was relatively lukewarm warm which is a shame when you are expecting quality. My wife ordered a caramel iced latte with oat milk and she said it was good, but nothing memorable. Seems like it has some nice potential and would give it a shot again. read more

The place is very nice, the interior is very cosy, the staff is very friendly and very helpful. It is very good optional in summit to spend a pleasant time. Personally, when talking about regular coffee, I prefer coffees with stronger notes such as Papua new guinea with notes of chocolate malt, hickory, medjool date or El Salvador Santa Rosa that the notes are cherry, milk chocolate, earthy. But if I recommend it I didn't have the opportunity to try the pour over, but I think I would come back to try. read more

Shop was really big and clean inside. The staff seemed very nice but a little standoffish. I order a large iced matcha latte with almond milk and it was delicious but it set me back almost $9. There wasn't a lot of ice In cup but I didn't mind as I felt like I actually got my moneys worth on for the matcha. I was also able to taste the matcha which I think sometimes can get lost with matcha lattes so that made me very happy. I didn't get any pastries but they all looked delicious and I'll definitely be returning to try them out soon. Nice place, really cozy atmosphere with ample and varying seating! Saw a lot of people reading or working on their laptops when I was here, bet it's a nice place to work or chill. The drinks are slightly overpriced, but still good quality. I got a seasonal winter drink, the nutcracker latte (a white mocha with cinnamon); pretty good and rich, but nothing too special. Great place to sit and watch the day go by. This coffee shop is big and comfortable with wide opened spaces, in addition, it has huge windows that let the light in. The place was buzzing with customers enjoying their drinks, while others were working. I ordered the cardamom vanilla latte (the cashier was a British gentleman who was absolutely delightful) which was delicious. The orange scone was amazing as well. Popped in here to kill some time before going to an event nearby. It's a great little coffee shop. There are a good amount of options in terms of the coffee. Went with a cortado, which was nicely done, and a jasmine iced tea. Service was quick and the prices were fair for the sizes. Not a ton of seating options but we were able to snag the two comfier big chairs in the common area. Some people were there studying, which seems pretty feasible but not sure of the plug situation. Parking on the Sunday we were there was so easy and so free. Not a lot of food options but the area itself has a ton of them. Overall, if you're looking to read a book or just grab a relaxing cup of caffeine, this is a nice spot to do it. read more

With a late afternoon flight out of Newark and nowhere to go until then to work, I decided to visit Boxwood Coffee for some food and a nice workspace at the recommendation of my friend who's a local. This place is incredible, the staff were all super friendly and helpful, the place is very tidy, with a nice quietly atmosphere perfect for working from, plenty of seating and outlets, and some delicious food and drink options. As a non-coffee drinker, sometimes coffee shops can be big flops for me, but they had a very nice tea menu so I decided to try some of their Hibiscus berry tea which was very refreshing, fruity, and floral. Additionally, I was hungry so got one of their beautiful baked goods - a banana chocolate chip muffin. Anyone who knows me, knows this is exactly the type of baked good I love and it checked off all the boxes. Such a delicious way to start my day. I stayed here for the whole morning while I drank, ate, and worked and it seemed that was pretty normal here. The place got pretty busy towards lunch time, but the staff never made me feel unwelcome. Wow There's a lot wrong that happened here today; all employee related. There were six employees here and they were kind of slow. Sigh. The two women that were at the counter are inexperienced in customer service as well as how to make and serve a cup of coffee... I feel that they were not trained at all and were trying to figure it out themselves. Neither of them had a sparkling personality, but who cares. I came to the counter twice to order two different drinks, left a tip both times and feel like I did not get my moneys worth of customer service! My friend took his drink back because his red eye tasted weak; he never returns things and did so only at my urging. He was charged extra. A red eye that tastes weak? Really? Wow. I don't write negative reviews very often. I'm writing this because Management needs to know. The barista put the lid on wrong so that the cup leaks I might suggest that when these particular employees work together, there should be a manager here lighting fires under people and training. I've been here a number of times and this is not the most customer oriented coffee shop but today I had to speak up. Things are somewhat better at the Westfield location, but, let's face it folks, the bar should be much much higher in Summit and Westfield. I walked into this shop based on another Yelp review. I get to the case and there's a sign no food can be heated up, oven is broken. The service is horrible. There was nobody in front of me at the counter, yet there were 3 behind the counter. Not one of them asked to help me. They weren't even making orders. They were just bustling around and ignored me. After 5 minutes of no interaction, I left. The ambiance was that of a coffee shop. All the tables were filled. I will not be back. Came here with my boss for a quick coffee and sweet treat after a lunch. The lavender latte (I have no idea what the actual name was) was incredible, and I had a pistachio macaron that was the perfect bite. Definitely not a Starbucks-style "factory," so the artisan drinks may not be immediately ready, but the space is nice enough to hang in while you wait. There were tons of tables outside for us to work at, but the shrubbery was a bit awkward. read more

Okay, we need to talk about something so critical it demands everyone's 'tention right about now : Blueberry Delight. More specifically : Boxwood. Actually, you'd hardly need any critical thinking when it comes to this topic of interest, promise. Though you might think critically of other things, even those remotely related or completely unrelated. But trust me on this : this particular blueberry delight is one of a kind, seemingly creating its very own class in the delightfulness department. Well, unless I'm so behind in the race to the top of this proverbial mountain-climb of spotting the next new thing to ride till its wheels fall off its hinges... Either that, or us consumers... Either way, something always gives in the end. But not us... Not just yet, at least. As we give things another spin...and again...and again...till the end. Four stars for this sweet, chewy treat of the toffee-ish kind. And why four, you ask? And as I have yelped a dozen times over and over before, I say : I reserve five exclusively to perfection. And right now mankind is nowhere near perfect, even with all our good intentions. Though again, in spite of all our 'ruptions of all kinds, we proceed to progress in whatever direction. Boxwood coffee is such a cute cafe that I instantly fell in love with the place as soon as we walked in. The decor was very cool but relaxing at the same time. I loved how inviting the place seems to be. I was hoping to get some croissants but at 1-2ish on a sunday, i guess they run out quick. We opted for a breakfast sandwich and matcha balls instead. The sandwich was surprisingly good. The biscuit had a good herby taste and paired perfectly with gouda and a sunny side up egg. The matcha balls were also delicious. I loved that i could taste a bit of the coconut in it and that it gave it a good texture. More importantly, i thoroughly enjoyed my mocha latte. The kind that could get you "aaah". It was prepared so nicely and they are not stingy with the portions too. I also have to mention that their marble tables make the coffee and any other drink look even more appealing adding up to such a good coffee experience. I hope to be back again!! read more

It may seem almost cliche, but I love the ambiance of a nice coffee shop. The warm feeling of wood in the decor, medium colors, the din of conversation and the almost perceptible hum of machinery (between the coffee machines and piles of laptops in the cafe) and the smell of coffee and tea - it all just comes together in a calming fashion. Boxwood Coffee is a perfect example of this mixture. This bright and rather spacious coffee shop was a welcome stop on a hot day in August. I stopped in to grab a Dirty Chai Latte. The staff was super friendly. When I ordered the Chai, they told me their default was to put a double shot of Espresso in and asked if that was okay. I of course said yes! I also asked about Matcha Ball snacks they had wrapped up on the counter and they were happy to explain them (among the ingredients were pistachio, so I was sold). The latte was fantastic, with sweetness, spiciness and a good caffeine kick. Meanwhile the matcha balls were chewy and delicious (with a sweet and salty touch). I could absolutely picture myself parking my laptop here for a little while as I enjoy a drink at Boxwood. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Last year, Lisa I believe left Starpunx on Beechwood Avenue down the street from Boxwood coffee shop. She was an itinerant amateur ballerina by avocation with a sunny mood. Worked like a whirlwind, always a smile. I gifted her on impulse with a pair of tickets to see a movie about the Bolshoi when I heard she was leaving after seven years and never heard from her again, which is fine. Hope she's well. I know she got a kick out of the film. But with her left any semblance of personal kindness at that Starfunk where personal interactions are apparently now forbidden in the interests of making money and coffee, in that order. But down the street, quietly, a competitor named Boxwood has taken root and has grown. A feat in and of itself as both sell coffee. However Starbucks throws it at you; Boxwood gifts it to you. Boxwood to me is why I patronize businesses: for the people that run them. The coffee is just as good if not better than the Factory Assembly Line Makebucks, but with the clientele chatty and eclectic and the staff a breath of fresh air. God bless the staff, each sunny, breezy, efficient, kind and with a sense of humor. None bitter, overworked, "multitasking" and emotionless. There is even a girl starting her life path all the way from Mississippi charting that path in graphics all the while sprinkling polite "sir" and "mam" in her kindly exchanges. She wouldn't fit in at the Starplunks where charm and simple compassion and casual kindness are outlawed. We have been forced to forget what's the most important reason we become faithful customers by these money obsessed mega chains like Starbucks. It's not the cheapest price, fastest service and least inconvenience. It's the human touch. The grace in the smallest exchanges. They used to know your name at the Starmux and now the overworked industrial cogs barely know their own names (perhaps why they have name tags) as they're worked like plough horses. Boxwood exists and has flourished for the best reasons: to make our lives a little better, a little bit more pleasant and dare I say it, gentler and more gentile. So best of luck to the Starflunx Summit Important clientele who primarily use the coffee depot as a fueling station for the brain train, nearly never even speaking to the Sandinistas or baristas and biting their heads off if the get the order wrong. There's this vacuous nasty callousness to the experience that I've had enough with. The last time I had a laugh in there was when I met Rex Ryan and he wore a sweater saying "F--- You, You F--ng F!" I roared with laughter and said "I wish I could wear that at work!" and he roared back "I do!" At Boxwood, their sweater would say "Welcome You, Our Welcome!" As for me? It's Boxwoods, where I'll have a bit of a chat on early mornings and discuss the finer points of the giant mural of a bird outside, being reminded that when this life is done and our living races won, we won't look back on how fast coffee was thrown at us but how slowly we enjoyed the experience. So my friend and I were looking for a cafe to chill at after lunch and we stumbled upon this place while walking around. The interior is really nice and the staff are VERY friendly & helpful (only two reasons why I gave this place a star); however the matcha latte that I got was disgusting LOL. Besides the latte art being beautiful, I couldn't drink more than two sips of the drink because it was so bland and distasteful. I will definitely come for their teas however, as my friend got the french press of one of their teas and it was actually pretty good! The atmosphere was also a good one for one to study or even catch up with a friend. Price is alright, typical for a cafe. There's also free wifi here that was a plus! read more

Without fail, I always come here when I'm home from college for one thing and one thing only: the vanilla cardamom syrup!!!! I swear to god there is just something so perfect about it. I usually get it in an iced oat milk latte but have also liked it in an iced almond milk chai. I have yet to find another coffee place that has this kind of syrup, and I've been to many in my time. It just adds a perfect nuttiness and sweetness. I've also worked here a couple times/met up with friends here and the ambience has always been great! The only downside is the parking, but it's downtown Summit so that's to be expected. I wish they'd sell this syrup - i'd probably buy a bucketful~ read more

Absolutely the best coffee and atmosphere in the area! The staff is wonderful and experienced. During COVID19 they have rolled out a great order ahead app which makes social distancing during pick ups easy. The have recently introduced a 64oz growler of their amazing cold brew! The prettiest lil coffee shop that I ever did see! Downtown Summit is charming and Boxwood Coffee is no different. If I lived closer I'd probably work here every day. The interior is very clean, modern and relaxing - I loved the white marbled countertops! They have a variety of drinks and sweet and savory snacks. I ordered a vanilla cold brew and it was strong and refreshing. My fiance tried a pour over and also really enjoyed his drink. I was only hungry for a snack and not breakfast which was a shame - the case filled with biscuit gouda egg sandwiches looked heavenly! Instead I went with a pistachio macaron. The macaron was large, stuffed with a thick creme filling and coated with crunchy pistachios. Could have eaten like five of these. Boxwood is such a local gem and the people of Summit are lucky to have them downtown. I'm not in the area often but would revisit Boxwood in a second if I was. read more
