I really want to like this place but sadly, I generally get a Regina George vibe. I doubt it's intentional which is why it's worth a conversation. I come here only on Sunday mornings and often, when there is usually no line. For two years I have been doing this , I have received ZERO eye contact, no warmth, no engagement from this shift's crew--until today. That's why it mattered when one Asian barista this morning (who wasn't the one to take my order) warmly looked at me, smiled, and said something kind. It came right after her coworker placed my drink down, mumbled my name, and they turned their back on me when I thanked them -- but weren't doing anything else! Same energy when they took my order minutes earlier even when I was the only person in line. Like I owe them a favor for being at their counter! I've watched them and their colleagues treat me this way consistently. Mind you, I either only order a latte, a matcha, or a pastry. The worst part is that this treatment feels selective. I''ve seen this same crew be friendly, laugh, and engage with other customers--but from what I've seen for 2 years is that it seems only a certain type of walk-in gets this reception. It suck's to be flatly received and then notice the person behind me get a smile and a conversation, even if it's obvious that they're not a regular here ... at least not on Sundays. :) Again, thank you to that barista who broke the pattern for me today because I finally felt seen. I added a 3rd star out of gratitude. :) If you've found this crew non-selectively friendly, I'd genuinely like to know what day you come--because my Sunday morning experience has been consistently selective. Very overpriced drinks with terrible, stale pastries. I don't drink coffee. Their teas are very Americanised. Sometimes I look for a good green tea and the only green tea they have has fruit in it. Matcha isn't good. It's on par with Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks Matcha. I had the Matcha strawberry drink and it was too sweet. Nice little coffee shop on the main street part of Westfield it has a very laid back hipster vibe to it. The music isn't overpowering loud so you can still have a conversation or get work done. They have plenty of seating and even a couch. The service was good the employee who took my order was pleasant and got my order quickly. As far as the food I ordered a glazed donut and a black medium roast black coffee. The coffee was very and not bitter nor did it have coffee grounds on the bottom of the cup (which I hate). The glazed donut was very fresh and tasted great it was sweet but not overpowering which I love. Just make sure you take extra napkins as it is messy. Boxwood in Westfield has hands down the best coffee in town. I went in yesterday and tried the Dubai Chocolatte Latte and wow, it was SO good. Tastes just like Dubai chocolate (minus the pistachio crunch) and now I'm lowkey addicted. But honestly, it's not just the drinks that make this place great. The staff is super friendly and actually talk to you. It's rare these days, most places just rush you in and out, but here they make you feel like a regular even if it's your first time. I like coming here on Sundays especially since there's free parking, and it's become my go to spot when I need to get some studying done. It's always clean, the vibe is chill, and I've never had a bad experience. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good coffee spot with great people. Rarely I am in Westfield. Really nice town, really busy downtown at least now in the spring summer. This is a large place with many seating areas. Lots of young adults in and out of this place and the area in general. Good ambiance. I came here to get some beans and some coffee. I was a tad hungry after napping most of the day away. So, when I saw the donut I went for it. The donut was a bit dry and dense wasn't anything to write home about. The coffee was good. However my SO got the matcha and it was horrible. They did not use a matcha whisk instead used a tiny baking whisk and possibly a lower grade matcha. Bottom of the cup there were matcha clumps and the taste wasn't good. Eventhough the weather is getting chilly, it's impossible for me to transition to hot coffee just yet so no judgement, thank you! Espresso was quality and the tres leches donut was a dream. To balance, I split a turkey and cheese croissant with my partner. It was brought warm, cheesy melted, was especially comforting. Service was stealth and kind. They took the order thoughtfully and my items were ready in less than 5 minutes. All came deliciously prepared. There was decent seating while people were studying and chatting, a great space to rest and relax with good seating for those who are disabled or in chronic pain too. My visit was practically perfect, but the prices are steep with $6+ for a small latte. I came in to order a flat white. Over the course of my excursions to Westfield, I have eyed this coffee roaster every single time but was never able to go in. Finally, I had the chance to and it was worth the wait. I love supporting local businesses and local coffee shops are my favorite places to go. The flat white was just as good as Black Swan Espresso in Newark. The customer service was also wonderful. I've been to their other location a long time ago and I recall not being impressed but it was so long ago I figured I'd give them another try with their new location. We perused the whole beans they had, and picked the only bag of beans that had been roasted with the week. All the other bags were roasted 2-3 weeks prior. We ordered our drinks and a jelly doughnut. The jelly doughnut was dry and almost stale. The iced oat milk latte was good. The matcha latte tasted like grass. The matcha was not of good quality, it was a dark green color. Either they're matcha oxidized or they're not using ceremonial grade. They also used a regular whisk to whisk the matcha so there were huge clumps on the bottom. read more

I was excited to try out this cafe since it looked very nice but if you're looking for matcha, look elsewhere. I can't speak for their coffee since I didn't try it but probably best to stick to that if you plan on going here. The matcha was kept in a opaque white jar, which was a good sign, but there was a lot of powder around it that looked quite muddy green and oxidized. The whisk that they used to make the matcha was a metal cooking whisk, which did a pretty bad job at de-clumping the matcha, creating a pale green-milk with huge clumps of matcha in the final drink. The regular matcha did not contain any sweetener and was a bit off-putting, though they provide sweetener on a table near the front door. The vibes inside the cafe were very aesthetic and suited for cafe study/work with most of the patrons on laptops/reading books. It did seem a bit like a library and less of a social cafe, which is okay depending on what you're looking for. Would not recommend the matcha here. read more

Stopped in spontaneously while in the area. The cashier explained the different types of coffee available. I was in the mood for exotic tasting coffee. I tried their pour over coffee from Indonesia. I think it's called the sumuntra. It was delicious. The cafe is spacious, clean and has areas to read or do work on your laptop. There are healthy snacks and sweets to snack on if you get hungry. My first encounter with a Boxwood Coffee Roaster was actually in another town in NJ (I do not recall exactly where) and they left a great impression on me. A beautiful space, friendly staff willing to answer questions and good coffee. When one opened up in Westfield, I actually waited a while before visiting it since I know some new eateries may need time for the new staff to "settle" before it is ready for prime time. Then the pandemic hit and a good year went by before I could try it. Boxwood's interior was clearly designed for a different time when people could mingle and linger in a coffee shop close to other people for hours at a time. It has a beautifully bright interior with light wood colors and comfortable lighting. Seating ranges from couches to long tables with bar seating. However, with Covid restrictions, some areas such as the couches are blocked off. Most of the eating is around smaller tables and the large ones with the bar seating. Not a bad compromise if you are comfortable hanging out in a restaurant. I have gone on two occasions recently. Each time I ordered a Dirty Chai, and one time I ordered a Chai donut (it's my thing). I really liked the Dirty Chai (oat milk if you're curious). It had some spice and a smoothness that you don't often get in Chai lattes. It is not the *best* Chai I've ever had (I reserve that for a small spot in Manhattan near Chinatown), but I did really enjoy it. The donut was...okay. Honestly I barely got any Chai flavor from it so it wound up just tasting like a glazed donut to me. The staff at Boxwood is very friendly and they work hard. Both times I visited they were hustling to get orders out with little chit chat or delay. I enjoyed my visit to Boxwood and look forward to going again soon! read more

Comparing to Starbucks because it is the popular option nearby: Espresso based drinks are fine... definitely better than Starbucks, but not as good as the independent cafe's that you'd get in Manhattan & other non-suburban areas (maybe they should try use better beans?). Its okay for Westfield I guess. Prices were reasonable. Store itself is nice... kind of industrial feel, with plenty of seating. They also sell coffee beans, but they weren't the freshest (at least during my visit). Service wasn't as friendly as I'm used to at independent cafes. Ended up here on New Year's Day, since my beloved Rock'n Joe was closed. I'd been here before, when it first opened, and thought it was OK, but, this time the "regular" coffee was totally undrinkable. It was brewed way too strong, and very bitter. I like strong coffee, but this was really bad. My friend had the same impression. I dumped it out. Other than the overpriced macarons, the selection of baked goods is sparse. The room is spacious, but has a cafeteria-like ambiance. There's good natural light from big windows, but the incandescent bulbs in some of the seating areas are hung too low, right in your eyes. With three other coffee bars in downtown Westfield, there's no reason for me to come back here. I wish them luck, but this place is not for me. read more

It's like they took a coffee shop from SoHo and put it right in downtown Westfield. A perfect coffee shop to me has to have just the right blend of great tasting coffee, friendly staff and an inviting and cozy ambience. Boxwood scores high on all 3 of those things! I could see 2 Entrepreneurs sitting at a table discussing the next big start up. Or all of the local high schoolers sitting at a table after school. Watch out because this place will become the new hot spot! When you walk in the front door the color scheme and layout are open, inviting and bright. The music is current and relaxing but at the same time invigorating and exciting. (They were playing Anderson Paak when I went in) And it's played at the right volume. There are other coffee shops in the area where the music is so loud you can't even think let alone have a conversation or get work done. Side note - I'd love to see them feature local musicians. It's a great space for local singer songwriters! The barista's behind the counter walked me through some suggestions for my morning coffee and pointed me towards their seasonal lighter roast. They were very well-informed and told me the complete story behind the coffee beans and walked me through a flavor/tasting profile. I love it when I know the story behind my food and coffee. It makes my experience more exciting and worth sharing with other people. I highly recommend trying their seasonal spring coffee. It's light with tastes and notes of cantaloupe and melon...a perfect but not too heavy jump start to your morning.
