Chapter 2 Coffee Roasters isn't very far from the Rutgers campus, so don't be surprised if the place is packed with college kids if you visit on a weekday. Depending when you go, parking can be tricky, but not impossible. I recently went here on a Monday late morning/early afternoon and it was busy, but not too hectic. I saw that they have an Ube latte on their menu and as a Filipina American, I had to check it out. In addition to an ube enthusiast, I'm a Macha snob. I don't know anything about coffee, but matcha is my thing. My barista was friendly, knowledgeable, and patient with my questions. I love that they use Nu milk for their alt milks as it tastes good without all the fillers. I ordered an Ube Matcha latte with almond milk from the barista's recommendation and got a vegan breakfast sandwich. Their Ube syrup was legit. You could taste the halaya and the color was a natural purple. I think and hope that they work with the Filipino owned brand to support the local farmers of the Philippines. You know Starbies isn't doing that. Unfortunately, the Matcha was not it. I cringed as I saw the barista pull the Matcha from a plastic Tupperware. I could not taste it at all in my latte and sadly consumed another green tea latte. (Not the same.) For me, I like a Matcha latte that is sweet, creamy, and umami. Suggestions: I think that their Ube latte would pair better with Hojicha (roasted green tea). I think the nuttiness of the Ube would compliment the cocoa / warm notes of the hojicha. I am a huge fan of Ooika in Princeton and I know they partner with other local cafes in NJ. They're very transparent and knowledgeable about Matcha and are a great resource. Most cafés focus on coffee, education, but nowadays, Matcha education is just as important. Final thoughts: I would happily return to Ambee. It's a great café that serves good quality drinks and food. It's a great place to work and build community. The baristas are kind and genuine, and their seasonal drinks look delicious. If you like Ube, definitely come here instead of Starbies. If you want other Ube treats or drinks, also check out Kafe de Manila, which is located a few doors away.

I visited on a Monday just before noon, and it had a steady flow of people coming and going but very few people staying to hang out. Outside, they have a handful of small tables and a walk up window. The ambiance is very college focused. They played a mix of classic rock and pop music, I think I heard a Shakira song? lol they have a cute "no touch" display of jellycats, and a small bookshelf next to the futon. It also has glasses on it so if you're willing to take a book, you're braver than me. Cell service sucks here, but their WiFi password is clearly posted near the door. As for the drinks, I ordered an Earl Grey latte a with oatmilk and vanilla cold foam (the cold foam was recommended by the barista so I have it a shot). They didn't give me the option of hot or iced and I have only seen people get iced drinks so I'm not sure if there is an option. I expected it to be a tea latte due to it being Earl grey but I was incorrect. It's an espresso latte with house made Earl grey syrup. The espresso was fine, but I couldn't really taste the Earl grey syrup at all. I think I will definitely try something else next time. I ordered a pastel de nata. This is an area where basically everyone is Portuguese and it's clear that this cafe is Portuguese owned as well. I love pastel de nata so I was excited to see them. They offered to warm it for me and it was good! Kinda hard to mess up tbh lol. They don't seem to offer actual food, just baked goods. It's a small selection, I assume freshly baked daily. It's Halloween season and I noticed they have a Harry Potter menu I would be interested in trying. The barista was telling the girl ahead of me in line that the Butterbeer latte is the sweetest item on the menu. They have all of the normal milk options: whole, 2%, skim, oatmilk, almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk.
