Popped in here completely randomly. I'm in this area a decent amount and never even noticed this place. A small shop with limited metered street parking out front, but there is a metered parking lot up & across the street. The first thing that stood out was how amazing the place smelled. I was taken back by it. Coffee shops always smell like coffee but this was just next level. The air smelled delicious, like I wanted to eat it. Service was fast, barista was very friendly. A great random stop in my day. I got a double espresso to go. Could have been a bit stronger, but still not bad. . Stop in and check this place out some time. read more

Ahrre's is a nice mom and pop coffee shop but I didn't exactly leave warm and fuzzy. Pros: Coffee was actually delicious. Cons: Staff not exactly inviting. I somehow didn't feel welcome. Instead I felt like a bother. The fact the decaf coffee was out to the side for self service but everything else was as behind the counter was weird. They give you an empty cup of syrups you want. Then say fill it up over by the side and oh, here's the oatmilk. Just make the entire thing for me... this isn't a car dealer or jiffy lube. You should know what non-sweeteners you have. Asked for a Splenda and I was directed to... uhhh whatever is over there... thanks for the great service! Great coffee but don't expect to feel welcomed. read more

Since moving to the area, this has become my go to place for whole beans due to the high quality and variety of the product offered. I have to give a shout out to Marcus, who not only informed me of the loyalty club but credited me when I informed him that other employees failed to inform me when I had purchased in the past. The place smells amazing when you walk in. It was my 1st time there and I got great recommendations from the nice staff. I tried a white chocolate raspberry latte and it was the right amount of sweet and the perfect flavor pairing for their rich espresso. I was just sad I hadn't ordered a second one. =) read more

I'm not one of those folks who claims to be "above" any kind of coffee shop. I enjoy chains such as Starbucks, but I also love to check out smaller mom and pop type shops. Ahrre's is tucked away in between a few other shops and it has this Old Skool look with a door that is clearly worn with age but in a dependable, attractive way. The interior of the shop has been renovated not too long ago, but it still manages to look classic and modern all at the same time (this is a design hat trick in my book). The interior also has a fun sense of humor, with topical signs talking about coffee. An L shaped counter is where most of the action is. In between orders staff can be found filling mail-in orders, which was not something I knew they did until recently. You can also buy coffee beans by the pound in person, and if you do this often enough they have a club you can join where you get rewards for purchasing X amount of items (I did not get full details as I was in a rush). On this particular visit I wound up ordering a Pumpkin Spice Latte. They whipped it up very quickly and both staff members working there were very nice and efficient. What surprised me however was the latte itself. It definitely was not the usual flavor I expect from Pumpkin Spice where flavors like cinnamon or clove are evident. In fact, if I were to classify the flavor, it actually had a much richer, caramel type flavor. Don't get me wrong, it was *good*, it just wasn't what I was expecting. The staff who work here are friendly. And they do have an app which makes ordering easy. Usually you get a free brewed coffee when you order beans, which is nice. During the COVID lockdown they are offering curbside delivery. In fact they may have offered that option before too. The reason that I'm not giving 4 stars is that I don't know how fresh the beans are. You really should be using freshly roasted beans for good espresso. But once when I asked about roast date, I don't think the person working there was too sure. Also based on the espresso quality, I usually suspect that I'm not dealing with a fresh roast. I've been buying my coffee beans here since Ahrre opened this second location many years ago. I'm up to almost 700 lbs. purchased here. They keep track, because for every 10 lbs. that you buy, you get one free. Ahrre has had to raise his prices recently, but is still cheaper than the three other coffee stores in downtown Westfield. The roaster is at his original store in Summit. Ahrre personally dark roasts all the coffee, except maybe the decaf, in small batches. I especially like the Hawaiian Kauai, the Java Estate, and the Tanzanian Peaberry, but he has a big selection from all over the world, plus flavored beans, and blends. The store also features a full espresso bar, or, to walk in and grab a quick cup, several carafes of self-serve hot coffee (flavors rotate daily) as well as a small selection of gourmet chocolate bars, baked snacks, and coffee and tea-making gadgets. You can help yourself to a free cup of coffee with any bulk bean purchase. They also make smoothies, have some teas, and cold-brewed iced coffee in season. Service is quick. Burnt 90s style beans of indeterminate age I so want to like this place because it's local and I've moved back to my hometown after being away for 14 years, but I can't recommend it at all, especially if you have any expectations for a Third-wave coffee experience. It seems okay at first sight: the many jars of beans and the map look fun! But the shortcomings of the beans appear when you scratch the surface and are obvious when you take the coffee home. The first red flag was no indication or knowledge of the roast dates for the beans. Another was that there was only one light roast despite a long menu: seemed a peculiar choice to me. Anyway, despite them saying all their beans are medium roast, these are by contemporary standards dark/burnt. Note how oily the beans always are: oily beans mean that they have been roasted well into second crack, meaning sugars have stopped caramelizing and the woody structures of the beans have burned. You're probably not getting origin flavor, and you're getting flavors that are anything but bright, floral, etc. If you think Starbucks serves really good coffee, you'll be fine with this place. But if you make your own espressos, pour overs, and care about that level of coffee making, look elsewhere for your coffee bean needs. read more

I normally love this place and I actually used them to purchase a large amount of coffee to use as favors for my wedding. Today 4/30/20 I tried to call the store to place an order for 2 pounds of whole bean coffee and a couple drinks amd I was turned away by a very rude sales person over the phone because I had to place online through a third party site and didn't want to take my order through the phone because as he said they were trying to stay safe. I was shocked by how rude this person was and his refusal to help me buy some coffee. I know we are in difficult times with the covid pandemic and I like many people prefer to spend a little more and shop locally since I live in Mountainside. I would rather give my money to small local shops that I know, by being in the restaurant industry myself, work on razor thin margins. I also know from being a chef that these third party companies like Grubhub, Uber eats, and others take up to 25% from the sale and the pockets of the establishments. Like many restaurants in town have encouraged people to order directly from them to avoid this very high fee I assumed this would be the same here. I WAS TOTALLY WRONG! They refused to take my order. I did however try to sign up for their online shopping although I hate to give even more info out to yet another company to add to the already long list of companies that I have signed up for to purchase one thing and never use again and the site would not let me sign up. Ahrre's you have broken my heart since I really love your coffee and since I am born and raised in the San Francisco , CA bay area I really felt connected to this place because of the owners story and connection to my childhood home. You made me feel like shopping at Starbucks because I KNOW they will take my money in any shape or form but instead I will take my business to other local coffee shops like Cafeteasia in Cranford. I will be sharing my experience on the facebook group Mountainside Matters that posts about everything local and any other social media platform. It's always refreshing to see an independently owned coffee place. What's also refreshing is their iced coffee. Super pleasant staff and love the decor with the large coffee jars. I believe he said they have over 90 or so variations and flavors, including decaf. Not much of a sit-down place unless you want to do it outside and people watch. read more

Two more and fancier competitors have moved in to downtown Westfield, but this place still has the most diverse and interesting bean and ground coffee in town. Parking can be difficult, so note that they offer curbside pick up. This is not a place where you can sit down and chat over coffee, but whether for a pound of coffee or a cup to walk around town with, is still the place to go. They also have a coffee club where you can earn free coffee. Finally, they are an avid supporter of local causes. read more

I did not enjoy my experience here. I order an iced vanilla latte and the worker seemed to be confused by this order based on his facial expressions. My drink was made in a hot cup, even though they have iced drinks in their menu. Also, they had a million beans but no skim milk. Despite the incorrect milk, the coffee itself was still bad and tasted burnt. I am very appalled at how this place has been functioning for what seems like years because I felt like I had walked into a dark dungeon that had no more than 10 feet of walking space. Great coffee!! But I ordered roasted beans on-line and was charged $11.40 for USPS shipping. Then they dropped it off instead of mailing it because I live between the Westfield and Summit stores. Makes sense, but they missed an opportunity to save they're customer some money. I will be buying from another roaster from now on. You should think more about your customers! read more

I just discovered Ahrre's, and boy am I glad!! I stopped by with some friends last weekend to grab a coffee (they make a good espresso!) and ended up getting a half pound of coffee. Three days later, and the coffee was gone. I went back yesterday and arrived exactly at 8am, when they opened. Only one guy (Ryan) was working, and he could not have been more friendly and helpful! He did not make me feel rushed and helped me select a few varieties of coffee. While I was talking to him, a car pulled up outside. He asked for a moment and went into the back to get a carafe of coffee for this person. He said that they (Ahrre's) like to have this customer's coffee for her, since she has been coming every day for five years. This incident speaks volumes about this business. They are truly focused on their customers....and they have AMAZING coffee. I realize I barely wrote about the coffee. They have a large variety of coffees (regular and flavored) from all over the world. Very smooth, not acidic, perfectly roasted. I have a strange ritual. Right after I finish shopping at Trader Joes, I head over the Ahrre's coffee for a latte. It's not a cafe, so you can't really sit down and drink your coffee, but you can always get it to go. The first thing that hits you as you walk into this place is the amazing smell. They have about 40 different kinds of coffee, and they seem to be fairly reasonably priced. They roast coffee in small batches, so you will have a good quality product. Word of caution: The house cafe latte is extremely strong (I think the default espresso here is a double in strength). I guess Ahrre's cares about the environment, because after a cup, you'll be so wired, you could run back home. read more

This place has changed since I've been here. I stopped after 6 months or so and the customer service is totally different. I guess it's under new management? Every time I go there, the same employee is working at that time and is very rude. Not so friendly, doesn't make recommendations if you're unsure and to a degree I feel like I'm being rushed. I remember getting many phone calls and text messages all at once (I run my own business) while my coffee was being made, the employee kept interrupting me about how my coffee is going to get cold. I couldn't connect to wi-fi, can't hang inside the shop. BEFORE the new hires: The staff they had last year was EXCELLENT! They would strive to make conversation, educate you on their coffee, make suggestions and actually try to "sell" their products. Now it seems like I run into the same employee every time I go there who is staring at their phone, seems disgruntled and it's not a great experience. read more

A local small batch roaster (who also sells mail order), Ahrre's is one of our regular stops. I lean toward purism in food and drink, and while I deeply enjoy and prefer traditional blends, I'm embarrassed to admit how much flavored coffee we buy there as well. The French Roast, Mediterranean 60/40 and Morning Blends are terrific in the morning or after a full meal. The regional/national blends and beans map well to what you'd expect of Indonesian, African, Central/South American coffees. The beans I buy there are generally darker roasts, but they do lighter roasts well too; I just prefer the darker ones. The Swiss water decaf process they use does a nice job making coffee afternoon-drinkable without seriously impacting the flavor or toning down the experience too much. While I used to disdain flavored coffees, I sometimes -- well, always I guess -- have their Chocolate Raspberry and Swiss Chocolate Almond beans on hand now. Great desert coffees that go well with what we cook. The service in the legendary days of the coffee nazi could have been featured on a "worst shopping experiences" TV show, but that gentleman (who at first wouldn't sell me the French Roast because I hadn't proved my mettle) is long gone and his successors have been great. It's worth noting that the beans at Ahrre's were always so good that people put up with any amount of pain to get them. And the French Roast -- a deep, rich, challenging blend -- *was* worth the wait. Highly recommended for a quick cup and as a source for very nice coffee at home. (Somebody here mentioned the aroma of the shop. Yes. It's just about perfect. You can't drink or stay there, but you will want to.) read more

This is one of the best coffee roasters I have ever been to. Zach is very knowledgeable and helpful in translating all the different beans and blends. Since I am a decaf guy, I tried a blend of Sumatra and Java. Maybe the best cup-o-Joe I have ever had. And the service and conversation is even better. read more

On saturday Went to spend a few hours in westfield downtown. Parked in parking lot near TJs and first place we come across is Ahrees coffee. Always looking to support small local business places rather than corporate national places we decided to try the coffee here. The guy (sorry forgot his name) was extremely helpful in helping us select the coffee. He knew a lot about coffees My wife tried a mocchacino and it was probably one of the best coffees we have had in a few years. The flavor was outstanding and so was the temperature I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good coffee. You will not be disappointed My son also tried a cappuchino at another small local business , Bovellas Pastry shop, and that was probably one if the worst cappuchinos we have ever had. I hate that I'm a coffee snob, but that's what I've become. Found this place less than a year ago, and when I can afford it, I get a pound of Sumatra or "Golden Butter Nut" both of which are outstanding. If you "A/B" this stuff against grocery-store blends or even the VERY GOOD Trader Joe's offerings, there's a noticeable quality difference. It's pricey ($14/lb) but if you're looking for some nice whole-bean offerings, I've yet to taste anything better anywhere nearby. Contrary to some other reviewers, I found the staff to be helpful; tell them what sort of flavor you like and they politely suggest one or two of their MANY options (and there are many, all beautifully lining the walls in big glass jars). Highly recommend. Also there's a coffee club so the 10th (I think, maybe 12th) pound is free. So, that's something. read more

Things change Coffee scene in Westfield has kicked up a notch recently but perhaps this was the game in town before. Not sure why so many stars Iced decaf Latte strong taste but a bit burnt This drink perhaps halfway between Starbucks and Boxwood. If you dig flavored coffee (I loved it in the 90s) they have many. There are different varieties all in thermoses ( also a throwback) which may help you get out of here in a hurry. I'm afraid I'm too much of a coffee snob. But if you want a flavored coffee or are in a hurry and can get a spot in front maybe this is your place. The pastries (muffins) look really mediocre. If ever I am in Union County and have some reason to try and find boob job trophy wives I'll probably try Boxwood next time. Or maybe I'll just go to Cranford, take the free ten minute parking and skip Westfield all together Yo and if you are in search of food with then head west to Plainfield to Coffee Box. I'm not sure why I've had such a different experience from other reviewers but I haven't been impressed by the coffee we've gotten from here. We've tried two different varieties but neither one had the bold flavor we were expecting. My husband even referred to one of them as "tasting like Folgers." I know a lot of people love it here but for whatever reason our experience has been less than stellar. Maybe I'll try it again at some point and see if I can find a variety that I like. It is hard to beat the location and it's always nice to support a local business. I just wish I liked their product more. read more

The coffee here is exceptionally good. A one-star deduction because they don't offer soy milk (I'm lactose-intolerant and have to take the coffee black and then add soy at home). Note that it's not a sit-down restaurant - you buy and go. Prices are absolutely reasonable. read more

Very nice, small coffee shop with many options to choose from. While I have yet to try the coffee I purchased, I felt inclined to write a post before even doing so. The employee working there was incredibly rude. I asked for a recommendation, and she immediately rolled her eyes and acted annoyed that I asked the question. Do not work at a retail store if you do not want to interact with customers. And I can say from my experience as both an employee and a Retail Manager, it's a big no-no to roll your eyes at customers. Unfortunately, I will not be going back. read more
