Serjeo is my new favorite person in Boston. If I won the lottery, I would buy everyone I could a diamond ring just so I could shop in his studio more often. Less than a week ago, I got engaged. Hooray! Very exciting. Even more exciting was the honor of being given my fiance's (that still feels weird ...) grandmother's exquisite sapphire ring. It was like getting gum from Jill Goodacre in a darkened ATM vestibule. Three days later, I was staring at it (as you do) and something seemed off. The stone was catching the light in a weird way. Like jello. Like it was ... moving. My stomach dropped. I immediately took the ring off (what if fast and furious typing sent it flying!?) and hit Yelp. Well huh. Seems Boston has a lot of great jewelers. Crap. I clicked through a few, read through the reviews, but none really grabbed me until I got to Serjeo. Page upon page of glowing reports spanning the past 5 years. One even mentioned what I suspected my problem was-- a resize gone awry. That reviewer described how Serjeo sat her down and explained the mechanics of what had gone wrong and was able to return her ring within short order looking better than ever. I called the next morning and made an appointment for this afternoon. It had only been four days since I'd put this ring on and I already couldn't stand to be without it for long but I sure as hell wasn't walking around with this clinking timebomb of sentimentality on my hand. I needed to get it in right away because I figured it would be a few days until I'd pick it up anyway. Which is why, when filling out the paperwork, I impetuously wrote "as soon as possible :(" on the line asking when I needed the work done. Yes, sad face and all. Soon after, I sat down with Serjeo and he looked at my ring and told me that it was indeed the original stone in the original setting (which I knew, but it was still really cool to hear him say it just from looking at it). He asked how long we'd been together and when I explained our convoluted dating history, he shook his head and said "Only engaged on Sunday after that long? I'm going to do this for you right now." Ten minutes later and for much, much less than I was anticipating, I was shaking Serjeo's hand and promising him I'd be back with my fiance (yep, still weird) soon to talk wedding bands. Bottom line: If you've ever been in the jeweler's exchange building in Downtown Crossing, you know it's filled with an overwhelming array of shops and studios. Walk right by them, go all the way to the end of the 5th floor (if you enter from 333 Washington St, as he's actually closer to the rear entrance on Province St) and talk to Serjeo. I went to Serjeo after having some issues with the sizing of my engagement ring and wedding band. He is the best!!!! I had not so great experiences with two other jewelers in the building (one being a large, well known jeweler on the 4th floor..) . I so wish I went to Serjeo from the beginning! He is awesome! When I set out to buy an engagement ring I knew absolutely nothing and was completely overwhelmed. Three months later, I am successfully engaged. My fiance absolutely loves her ring. I made this Yelp account specifically to be able to write this review and pass on what I have learned along the way. CUSTOM v. BRANDNAME v. STANDARD JEWELRY STORE First of all you should realize that anytime you are buying a brand name ring you are paying a substantial mark up just for the brand. If having a specific brand is important to your girlfriend then go for it. If it is not, and you want the best quality product for your money then you will probably be better off going somewhere else. In my case I found a designer ring that I liked a lot but it was way out my price range so I wondered if I could get the same type of ring made for less. In the end, the ring Serjeo made cost about half of the designer one but it actually has a larger and better quality diamond. The reason for this is simple. The cost structure at Serjeo's is much leaner than other places. When you buy at a standard jewelry store, part of your money goes to paying the salesman a commission, part of it goes to the overhead for the large store front, part to the factory worker who made the ring, the wholesale dealer who sold the diamond, the store's advertising budget, etc, etc... At Serjeo's you just pay for the raw materials (diamonds and metal) and for one expert craftsman to put it together (Serjeo). Do the math. Lower costs for him means less of a mark up which means a better price for you. Putting value and price aside, a custom made engagement ring is more special than one you can buy off the rack. My girlfriend really likes the fact that I took the time to make a ring specially for her. The downside of custom is that it takes time. If you choose this route get started early (a few months). Especially if you want Serjeo. Being very good at what you do means that you get very busy. Serjeo books appointments weeks in advance so you need to give yourself time. The other draw back of doing custom is that it is slightly riskier because you have to pay a deposit down before you ever get to see the finished product. Because of this, it is very important to find the right jeweler. SERJEO v. ANYWHERE ELSE If you decide to go the custom route, Serjeo is the best option. Start off by reading his Yelp reviews but do not stop there. Read his google reviews. Then go on to his Citysearch reviews. You will find that they are all glowing and positive. You simply do not get that kind of track record without running a genuinely good business. If you have read his reviews then I do not need to repeat that he is friendly, personable, knowledgeable, and has a true passion for his craft. I just want to add a few more things that are not mentioned in other reviews for you to think about when selecting your custom jeweler. (1) The network. The diamond market is very much based on personal relationships between suppliers, dealers and jewelers. Serjeo has been in the business for over twenty years. This means he has not only developed his skills but his network. I was looking for a very rare canary diamond. Luckily, Serjeo has contacts all over the world and was able to track down the diamond through a friend of his in Belgium. When you work with Serjeo you not only get access to his skill, but his extensive network of suppliers. I was ready to wait months for the right diamond. Serjeo found it in days. (2) Flexibility. I was a nervous wreck throughout the process. Serjeo was extremely flexible. If need be, he would meet me after business hours to show me his progress and talk about details. He would take my calls and answer questions as they came up. He worked with me every step of the way. He even came in to work during his vacation to make sure we got everything done in time for the proposal. (3) Lifetime relationship. There are many custom jewelers. But I have never heard of one that offers to polish your rings for free, for life. Serjeo does. This is just one example of the degree to which he stands behind his work. As he will tell you his business is 100% referral so the relationship with his customer matters to him above all else. You will find as you shop around that this level of commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is what separates a good or even great jeweler from the best custom jeweler in Boston. (4) Conclusion. I started this whole process not knowing anything but I am very glad I chose to get a custom ring and even more glad I worked with Serjeo. Rings are expensive. Do your homework. Read all of the reviews. Go on forums. Review online resources. Talk to friends. Learn about diamonds. Compare custom jewelry to other rings. Meet with various designers. Once you have done all of this I think you will find that if you have the time, and want something unique Serjeo truly is in a class of his own. read more

I had promised my brother that I would help him pick out a ring for his girlfriend, and, never having had to shop for engagement rings before, I did a search for Boston-area jewelers. Serjeo's name came up on several sites alongside overwhelmingly positive reviews, so we figured it'd be a good place to begin. Well, once we met with him, we knew our search needed to go no further: this guy is fantastic. We stopped by his office without an appointment and he met with us for two hours; he took the time to ask questions about what we were looking for and showed us a variety of settings, cuts, sizes, and stones. I've heard that many jewelers just try to push expensive rings on you regardless of whether or not you like them, but Serjeo really listened to what we said and was truly invested in making a piece of jewelry that was exactly what we were looking for, both in terms of price and appearance. He makes every piece of jewelry in his store himself and will not duplicate a design - he wants all of his customers to have something completely unique. His prices are amazing, too; I looked at comparable rings from various chain jewelers, and the chains' pieces were usually at least twice as much as Serjeo's (and not nearly as beautiful!). Where does one start? Serjeo really is the best. We are wedding photographers, we've seen it all. We've dealt with it all. Amazing!!! I knew I wanted a very unique engagement ring and I searched for someone in Boston that specialized in custom jewelry. Serjeo had the best reviews and its no question why. I had tons of photos of what I liked but had a hard time conveying exactly what I wanted. Serjeo is obviously a wonderful jeweler (my engagement ring looks great!), but where he really shines is customer service. My engagement ring was so big that it was even slightly loose on my middle finger so I took it to Serjeo. The ladies who arranged my appointment and greeted me when I arrived were so accommodating and friendly and they even offer you a beverage as you wait (although I barely waited, Serjeo was right on time). My engagement ring is obviously very special and I was very nervous about anything happening to it, but he was so patient, sizing my finger up, explaining how everything would work and what he was going to do. He made me feel so at ease. I had to leave it overnight because my ring has the stone embedded, but it was ready to go the next day. Here's the part that got them 5 stars. When I picked it up, I kind of felt like it was a hair too loose. Nothing major, but just could have been a teeny tiny bit tighter, but having never worn rings before, I wasn't sure. Serjeo explained that sometimes rings take a bit to get used to, that I should take it home and wear it for a few days and if I still wanted it slightly smaller, he would do it free of charge. I thought about it and while it fit pretty well, I felt it could be just a tiny bit smaller, just a hair too big. Serjeo did it right on the spot, no charge. I designed my fiance's engagement ring through Serjeo and could not be happier with the results. Right from the beginning Serjeo was warm, welcoming, and understanding. We were looking for a unique stone, a large black diamond, to put into a simple and elegant ring. Serjeo did a lot of work to find us the black diamond that was perfect for the ring (a more difficult thing than you would think!). He taught me a few things about diamonds and made me feel comfortable with his opinions and approach. After the second session I completely trusted him. We built the ring from scratch using carefully placed hints that my fiance had given me and adding very personal touches where appropriate. Serjeo recommended diamond size and setting look. His recommendations were not at all an attempt to have us pay more, actually they were the exact opposite, Serjeo saved us a considerable amount of money. Also, from just one meeting with my fiance, he seemed to completely understand what she would like and was one step ahead of me on describing things that she would want. Serjeo created exactly what we had imagined but never had really been able to articulate well. The end result was a completely unique ring that took her breathe away. A few hours after I proposed she had to ask me, "what did you actually say during the proposal," because she was so blown away by the ring she was barely even listening to me. Serjeo was a pleasure to work with! I saw positive reviews for him on yelp regarding his work sizing rings. I have my mother's engagement ring (yellow gold with a ruby and two side stones), but it did not fit my finger so I wanted to get it sized. When Serjeo looked at it, he told me that after years of my mother wearing the ring the band had worn very thin and sizing the ring could cause the stones to pop out of their setting. At first I was devastated, but we were able to brainstorm together and he was able to use the gold in the original to create a new stronger band in white gold. Seeing his appreciation for family heirlooms made me feel so comfortable in working with him to reenergize the ring. The ring is breathtaking and it now fits my finger! Besides his remarkable craftsmanship, Serjeo's personality and sense of humor made working with him so much fun! My fiancé and I had the most wonderful experience with Serjeo in designing my absolutely gorgeous sapphire engagement ring. I had a specific vision of what I wanted my engagement ring to look like, but we couldn't find anything like it in the local jewelry stores. Since most girls want diamond rings, the sapphire ring selection in stores was typically limited. In addition, I had trouble finding local jewelers that I clicked with. Although everyone was nice, I always got the impression that they were just trying to make a sale rather than help me find a ring that fit me and my personality. My fiancé didnt want me to see the final product before the proposal, but I did accompany him on the first appointment to explain what I wanted in the ring (sapphire center stone with a diamond halo) and what sizes/shapes I liked. Serjeo picked up on what appealed to me extremely quickly by paying close attention to subtle cues and my facial expressions. I felt like Serjeo had a better sense of what I liked than even I did! He very kindly and patiently explained everything to us from metals to prices, and we both felt completely at ease working with him. And as I have indicated, I could not be happier with my ring. It is just gorgeous! It is far prettier and far more "me" than any ring I saw in the stores. Serjeo also added special details that never would have occurred to me. I used Serjeo to design an engagement ring for my now fiancee. He was so helpful from the very start, using equal parts of my input and his expertise to construct the perfect ring. We will definitely be going back to Serjeo for our wedding bands. The only negative was he made a slight error with the sidestones (I had requested that he alternate diamonds and sapphires, but when I came to pick it up, there were only diamonds). To his credit, he canceled all his appointments to make it right within an hour, and gave me a $100 gift card for the next time we go there. I have recently had the pleasure of working with Serjeo on creating a custom designed engagement ring for my now fiance. If you read no further in this review then just take from this that Serjeo went out of his way, in a very tight time frame, with a great price, to create a ring I never thought could be so beautiful! I found Serjeo through Yelp and the number of 5 Star ratings he has are for a good reason. Call ahead and make an appointment so you can get in to see him right away. The original consultation was concerning the stone that I wanted to base the ring around. Serjeo displayed a great love, knowledge, and understanding of diamonds and he offered his professional opinion while allowing my eyes to make all the decisions. Serjeo is relaxed and sincere and the environment is top notch compared to the brightly lit sales feel that I have encountered elsewhere. After picking the perfect stone we discussed the design of the ring. I wanted a halo put around the stone and Serjeo walked me through the intricacies involved in making the perfect halo setting. I was invited back later in the week to view and take pictures of the mold he had made which gave me a great sense of being involved in the process while also allowing me to document it all for the future. I won't put pressure on Serjeo by saying how long it took to complete the process but lets just say for the quality of work that I received I would have waited twice as long! The finished product was AMAZING and my fiance was stunned. Also worth noting is that when everyone you know asks where you got the ring and you can say that you had it "custom designed" there is a certain feeling of pride you can't help but feel. Serjeo deserves 6 stars for my experience in every category. Price was great, and the product was better. Serjeo is truly a master of his craft and you will never doubt that you are making the right decision as long as your are in his hands. I came to Serjeo to design an engagement ring and I couldn't be happier!! I started off looking at rings in the ordinary jewelry stores and online, but nothing seemed to grab my attention. Worst of all, I wasn't finding anything that my fiancée's sister would approve of either. I stumbled across Serjeo by accident, just roaming the jewelry building in Downtown. Within 2 minutes of talking to Serjeo, I knew this was the place I was going to purchase my ring. From the start Serjeo was very upfront as we went over my budget and desired specifications and he assured me that we could make it work. The entire process turned out to be rewarding as I never thought designing my own ring, with the help of Serjeo and a good sister, would be so fun. I was able to take part in every step of the process from coming up with designs, approving the model, and picking out the center Diamond as well as the side diamonds. I feel this ring now has more meaning is special because I put in the time to customizing it as opposed to picking a generic design at a jeweler. This whole process took about 3 months, which might seem long, but was worth the wait!! Serjeo is the sole designer/maker of all jewelry, which I think is fantastic. It takes a little while longer than a traditional jeweler, but you are getting someone who has a great eye for beauty and someone who really cares about the work he does. To me, that made the wait worth it. Serjeo and his secretary make everything feel very personalized and welcoming. Overall, I would recommend Serjeo to anyone that is interested in purchasing a truly unique and outstanding ring. He books out pretty far in advance, so don't expect to get an appointment within a few days...THIS MEANS HE IS THAT GOOD!!! He only works by appointment so call or email. That is because he takes the time to sit down with you, get to know you, talk to you about what you envision and what you want. Then, with his years of experience and expertise, he creates something beautiful that exceeds your highest expectations. Serjeo was able to take the stone fro my mother-in-law's engagement ring and create a gorgeous new engagement ring for me. My husband and I had looked at rings, and liked elements of many different rings, but Serjeo took the best of everything and created something so unique; nobody will ever have a ring just like mine, and that makes it even more special. Fast forward a year and we wanted to set a gem stone that my father had collected into my mother-in-law's engagement ring, have it cleaned and resized, and gift it back to her for Mother's day...Serjeo was able to do this for us within about a week or so and it turned out so beautifully. THEN, he created a wedding band which goes perfectly with my engagement ring, and he included design details from the engagement ring into the wedding band. He has such a keen attention to detail. I tagged along when a friend went to get her ring adjusted. I have never been to the jewelry building and I was interested. We got off the elevator on the 5th floor and passed numerous workshops and showrooms. As soon as you turn the corner to Serjeo's showroom the environment changes. He has painted the corridor wall blue and has a tv monitor with images of his work. I had no idea what to expect and I was very pleased. You can tell the passion he has for is career and his customers simply by the environment. Serjeo took us to the workshop and we were able to watch him add sizing beads into my friends ring. After chatting a while about his love for making jewelry and his career goals I knew he was the real deal. Truthful, passionate and caring. After finishing the ring sizing he took my Tiffany's bracelet that I have been wearing for 10 years and fixed the charm that has warn down over the years. I was worried one day it would fall off. All I have to say is WOW. My fiance worked with Serjeo (after consulting with more than 10 other jewelers!) and I am amazed. When he proposed, I almost didn't respond because i was so in awe of the beautiful ring that was in front of me. It is even more beautiful than I could ever have imagined and knowing that Serjeo helped him design it from the ground up is incredible. He is a master jeweler! UPDATE: The boyfriend received a call yesterday from Serjeo's assistant saying that she was calling once again (which she had not called previously) and that Serjeo was able to work with our budget and wanted to meet again.
