They were so inviting ! I came in to fix a broken chain and they gave a reasonable price.

I had my wedding ring made here. Spencer does great custom work and will work closely with you to match your budget.

I go to museums to look at jewelry around the world, but I buy jewelry in Boston from Spencer. The best things I own are his work.

On our first visit, we shared a unique idea that would require custom modeling and design work. Ali and Hagop were able to help us refine the idea into something we loved, and were able to provide an accurate and reasonable quote that same day. They did a fantastic job on the custom design work, and were very responsive to our requests for changes and tweaks. The final rings are absolutely gorgeous and we'll treasure them forever.

Bostonian sells its custom work on collaboration, direct designer involvement, and customer happiness: "We don't sell things--we collaborate with you to create them," "We keep you involved throughout the whole process," and "We want you to be completely comfortable and happy with all aspects of the final design created." What happened when we were unhappy with the finished ring was the opposite. The defining element of our custom platinum ring was an infinity symbol. It did not visually translate in the finished piece. When we raised that problem and tried to find a solution that recognized both Bostonian's work and our loss, Bostonian's position became: you approved the CAD and wax, the job is complete, there is no credit, and you can "walk away." And the advertised collaboration itself was taken away. We had worked directly with designer Allie throughout the project. After Allie said she had to determine whether she could continue working with us, and owner Hagop said our emails made him feel like "a student in the classroom being reprimanded," Hagop told my husband: "It'll be me you'll be dealing with moving forward." From that point forward, he would control whether and how Allie--or any designer--participated behind the scenes. So when the customer relationship became difficult, the direct designer collaboration Bostonian had initially provided became conditional. We found no disclosed policy saying designer access could be withdrawn, no written process governing that decision, and no agreement telling us that management could unilaterally replace the collaborative structure we thought we were purchasing. The return issue was disturbing. Bostonian's policy stated that special orders may be returned for store credit. After the dispute arose, Bostonian relied instead on a "no returns" sign in the store. We had been in that store repeatedly, for hours. Neither of us ever saw that sign. No one pointed it out. No one told us our custom purchase was nonreturnable. We signed no contract, no agreement, and no acknowledgment of any no-return policy. We were told that any credit was at Bostonian's discretion--and they chose to offer none. The financial "solution" was one-sided. If we left, Bostonian kept the full payment and we kept a ring that did not carry the defining symbol we commissioned. If we continued with Bostonian, we would pay for another redesign and essentially receive only the scrap/smelter value of the platinum from the ring we had already paid thousands to design and fabricate. There was no shared-cost remake, partial credit, reduced redesign cost, or other proposal that distributed the loss between Bostonian and its customer. Meanwhile, we repeatedly had to audit our jeweler: reconciling diamond counts that did not add up, questioning changing prices and measurements, reconstructing chronology, comparing handwritten tickets and invoices, and asking Bostonian to explain its own platinum calculations. Instead of being able to rely on the professionals to maintain the integrity of the project, we became the accounting, documentation, inventory and quality-control system ourselves. Custom work can go wrong. What tells you who a business is comes after something goes wrong. For us, that was when Bostonian's promises of collaboration, transparency and customer happiness disappeared. Direct access to the designer was removed. The published return language provided no meaningful protection. Bostonian retained complete discretion over the process and the remedy. And every path offered protected Bostonian's financial position while leaving us with the ring, the loss, the cost of fixing it elsewhere, and the burden of untangling what had happened. That is what I would want to know before trusting Bostonian Jewelers with thousands of dollars and something irreplaceably meaningful.

I'm very happy with the pieces I picked. Carina also went out of her way to package them up so beautifully! Truly appreciate the great experience!

I already knew…read morewhat I wanted to get from a prior trip to the Seaport Mejuri location and just needed to come in to check sizing. I looked up my items online, which was difficult given that (with no labels on any of the jewelry) I didn't know what to search on their website. So I was ready to purchase items, just needed to check sizes (which is what an in-person jewelry showroom is for). We waited in line due to store occupancy limits (understandable, it's a small location) and once we got in were immediately accosted by an associate who asked if we were finding everything ok. She disappeared once I said that I knew what I wanted and needed help with sizing. When I had to go ask someone from the back desk area for help, they rolled their eyes and scoffed at me for...asking them to do their job and help me understand the (unlabeled) sizing for the bracelet. If you're going to have no labels on your display for what the sample sizes are (20/22 inches for a chain necklace, a very slight difference, plus no idea which sample bracelet was for the M/L/XL sizes) at least have helpful staff! Then, when checkout time came I was told that the price was going to be more than I had originally budgeted for since we had picked out the necklace with a slightly larger diameter. I asked for clarification and the girl helping me gave the most convoluted explanation about the bracelet already being upsized. She expected me to already be knowledgeable about the different finishes too. I had to advocate for my 10% signup discount to be applied. And when we got home, one of the boxes was missing the storage pouch and polishing cloth. Overall a really scummy experience all around that I felt like I was being tricked and upsold with unclear explanations even when I knew what I was purchasing. I'm used to buying fine jewelry and having nice laid out options sheets that this business model was clearly lacking. Or even transparent pricing! I'm betting that they treat their staff poorly because they are so unenthusiastic to even help out people who know what they want! Such an unnecessarily stressful experience. The gals next door at Glossier are so much nicer and more helpful, and their price point for makeup is far less than the consideration for buying what is ostensibly marketed as fine jewelry. Most things are extremely marked up and of variable quality as compared to standard jewelers. I only came because I liked one particular design and had felt it before as solid. TL;DR Even if you already know what you want, don't go to the Mejuri on Newbury, maybe the one in Seaport instead. Very unhelpful layout and staff.
