If you have curly hair, you probably know the frustration of getting a bad haircut from someone who claimed they were trained in it. Eric not only understands my curls but also knows how I like my hair styled. As I've gotten older and started to see more grays, Eric has also taken on the task of coloring my hair. Red hair is unique, and each person's hair reacts differently to color. Eric has been fantastic at finding the right color and products for all his clients. Additionally, Eric is great at accommodating appointments when needed. I couldn't recommend him more.

It was the source of most of my adolescent ridicule and caused me so much self doubt the inability to love my hair. A few nice souls did occasionally say something like, "omg why would you straighten your hair? It's so pretty!"... if only they knew the pain and humiliation I had experienced bc of it. I say that to say this. (Ignore my lack of correct punctuation here). Eric didn't just give me a stunning curly cut. He created something beautiful. He is a hair architect! He built my self confidence back up. I'm in LOVE with my hair, for the first time ever!! Thank you so deeply, Eric!!! I've included before and after photos. Night and day!

I never did much with my hair, and after taking a chance on a "high-end" salon across from Maggie Daley park I decided I would never do highlights or anything other than a cut ever again. The lady didn't use toner on my hair, and it was so brassy. I lost all trust in hairdressers, until I met Jeffrey. I shared the story with him and he was just as horrified as I was. I decided to try balayage again with him, and I'm so glad I did! He has mastered it. He stresses the importance of keeping the hair healthy, getting regular trims and using the correct products. He isn't pushy and definitely won't do anything to your hair that he doesn't think needs to be done. When I pressed for curtain bangs, he was very hesitant, and gave me pieces that framed my face instead (we had agreed to try this) and it was exactly what I wanted. He's someone I would book a flight to see if I leave Chicago, or if he does. He's awesome!

I asked her if she's ok with my specific request and she said ok to take time to figure things out. After a haircut, I tried to make extra appointment for touch up and they said they are going to charge $100 for another haircut because it's over a week. I asked them for a smaller charge since it's only about 10 days. The front desk talked to my stylist and she got back to me to make another appointment and we'll discuss the price. Then the owner called me and said the stylist did not want to cut my hair and I need to cancel the appointment. I think it's bullshit because I was checking in with her often, and she let me make another touchup appointment. I think the owner doesn't want anyone who tries to bend their rules. They represent themselves kind of artsy and free spirit, contrary they are super strict on rules and not accepting everyone.

I was a customer at RBCS from Nov.7.24-Jul.7.26 & would like to share a few things so other folks…read moredon't get themselves into trouble like me. I wanna start by saying my stylist was Keri S., who is AMAZING & I absolutely have no issues with their work! They literally gave me the hair of my dreams multiple times, & if you get the opportunity to work w/ them, I highly recommend it. Where I have issues is the cancellation policy. Context: I grew up poor and I am still living paycheck to paycheck. My hair salon before this was my bathroom sink or a Great Clips. So idk much about luxury salons. My one rich friend did say this was a wild policy so I will trust her on that (she moves a lot & has a dedicated hair routine, so knows salons). My appointment was supposed to be Jul 10, 26. I'd been saving for months, & was at budget! However, my cat had an unexpected vet visit the week prior & the $550 bill drained what I had. This is where I would like to take responsibility: I should have cancelled THAT MOMENT. My partner does gig work & made miracles happen before, so I asked if we could do it again, w/ my deadline being Monday, 7.6.26, to cancel. On Monday, we didn't have the funds, I tried to make a call, & discovered my phone was not working due to Samsung Messages deleting their app. I could neither confirm nor deny the appointment. No big deal, I'll call tomorrow! The policy hadn't previously been enforced when I needed a cancellation & when my stylist needed a cancellation, & everyone seems super chill. Nope! After explaining I would need to reschedule because I didn't have the money, I was given an option: reschedule for Saturday (later, told that option was actually based on whether someone else would reschedule), OR pay the $300 punishment fee (originally quoted @ $250; the price magically jumped when I called back bc of a 'misquote'.) I paid the fee & told them to forget I'd ever been there, bc listen y'all: I am chronically ill. My knee has dislocated while I was on the way to the doctor & they were more understanding than this. There are days I wake up and can't move because of my illnesses. I can't be out $250-300 every time my body decides to have a flare up or my cat drains my savings. Unfortunately, like most modern "alt" things, it's corpo-fied. They don't specify how they calculate fees, since it's based on service fees, which vary depending on how your appt goes. They don't specify if their stylists were asked before enforcing this policy, nor do they specify if the stylist sees ANY of the money they charge you for "not respecting their time." *Jeesh*, I'm broke, not a purposeful donkey-hat. If you're disabled, have kids, have pets, or don't have money like that to throw around, & you decide to visit, some tips: Don't let them make you reschedule after your appt. Wait until ~48 hours before you want your hair done & see if they have openings. It'll be auto-confirmed, & you have less time for you/your pet/kid to get sick & cost you. If you ever have issues, do your best to speak to the lady tht works mornings. She is way more willing to listen & at least empathize with you when things are going wrong. I genuinely don't think this would've happened if I'd called earlier Tues morn, but I have a job & the afternoon lady refused to speak to my partner (despite him being the one who normally does the scheduling since it's usually a gift.) TLDR: RBCS says they're alt & plaster stickers around talking about their anti-establishment policies. Some ppl tht work there are genuinely great/do seem to live by those values. BUT it's an "alternative serving" luxury hair salon. And the "luxury hair salon" part will ALWAYS come first. If they aren't getting paid, they don't care. If you know you'd never find yourself in a situation similar to mine, go for it! Otherwise... it's not worth it.

What I really liked about my haircut with Peter today is that he wasn't afraid to change up my hair. In fact, my new haircut is parted in the opposite direction of where I normally comb it. By making this change, it creates a new and fresh look that would have not imagined myself. He used a premium Hanz de Fuko clay molding product on my hair to realize his vision. After posting my picture of my new haircut on social media, I've received many compliments. Thanks Peter! As a side note, Peter had some Truly hard seltzer stashed in his mini refrigerator. I definitely took advantage of this alcoholic beverage which made my day even better. I understand that there is a pandemic going on right now, and we are all trying to be safe. However, we all need haircuts to look fresh as well. Peter will ensure that you have a fresh looking haircut while also making sure that sanitary measures are in place to prevent COVID-19. Some of you may remember Mario from his previous salon on Pulaski and Montrose (Hair By Mario). Well, he's back and has opened up a new barbershop/hair salon near Irving Park Road and Elston. It seems like most of Mario's clients are men, but I get my hair cut and eyebrows threaded there, and I think he does a great job. He's really fast, though you can tell he's a perfectionist and always gets it right. And he cuts your hair the way you ask him to; he'll make suggestions, but he's not one of those barbers who will say, "OK, I got it," then just do whatever the hell he wants. He's very precise and talented and listens to the customer. According to his business card, his shop offers haircuts, coloring, highlights, fades, threading and waxing, though I've only had haircuts and threading done. Mario's is really affordable. Men's haircuts cost $10 and women's cost $12. Eyebrow threading costs $7. As with any successful salon or barbershop, Mario's can get pretty busy. There were times we had to wait 30 minutes to get a haircut because of the line of customers before us, but since he does such a good job, I think it's well worth the wait. I would suggest going during off hours -- like in the daytime during the week -- if you can. He's closed on Sundays. Overall, I would definitely recommend Mario's. He's really good at what he does, and I always leave looking great!
