So glad I found this salon in my neighborhood. I made the switch after they reopened last summer after the shutdown. Brett is the best colorist I have ever had. I really can't say it more clearly than that. My color looks natural- but better than that with a few highlights. I have gray roots and come in 1/month without missing! The salon is not pretentious- just open and cool. Brett and Jackson seem to attract a laid back but focused clientele that want professional cuts and color. It fits in well in Bucktown. This salon is decorated so nicely, is in a great location and has a calm, sophisticated vibe. The cost of my haircut wasn't outrageous either! Unfortunately, I was not happy with the length of my appointment (I was there almost 1.5 hrs for a cut/style) or quality of my haircut. My layers weren't blended well and created a lot of extra weight near my cheekbone on one side. I have slightly wavy hair (between 1c and 2a on a good day) and I mentioned that I prefer a low-maintenance cut. I did have to get this fixed elsewhere several weeks later to confidently wear my hair down again. Photos are from 3 days and about 3 weeks after the haircut. There are many hair types and styling preferences out there and because my cut didn't meet my expectations, I sadly won't be back here. read more

My experience with 606 Salon was straight up shocking. I've never had an interaction like this with a business. I got a bad haircut here... it's bad! But that's not the shocking part. The shocking part was how the owner responded to my complaint. Before posting on Yelp, I contacted the salon to give them a chance to make the situation right and get the cut fixed. I assumed I could pop back in sometime this week to the cut fixed up. No biggie, right? Uhhh, that was not on the table apparently. The response I got back from the owner was unempathetic, unhelpful, and passive aggressively hostile. When I first contacted the owner, I sent him an email describing the situation and a photo of the cut. In my email I explained that I asked for a blunt cut that made my hair look the thickest and healthiest possible. I explained that I have been growing my hair out and avoiding color for over 2 years just so it could be this healthy. And I was excited to have it polished up. The cut I received from Brett is uneven and looks like it's missing pieces. It's no where near the polished blunt cut I asked for. I've included an (unflattering) photo here because I feel like it's so clear to see how rough it looks. I sent the same photo to the owner. The owner responded back to my email the cut "frames my face beautifully". And that they had to cut out all the damage caused by other salons. That was a very confusing response, because my hair wasn't damaged! I've included a before photo so you can see for yourselves, my hair was healthy except the last 1" or so and it was at least 3" past my shoulders. So I thought I would give it another try. In my second email I explained that the haircut not what I asked for and it's not my aesthetic and that my hair wasn't damaged. That I was really upset at the way it looked and wanted it fixed. The owner's response (in summary) was that there was again that there such extensive damage by other salons the cut was the best my hair could possibly look. Then he added "nothing is going to make you happy" and "maybe you can get extensions". You can see from the "before" photo that this just simply isn't true. My hair was in really good shape and didn't have any short pieces. The owner just would not in any way take responsibility for the situation and did not offer a single thing to try to resolve the situation for me. Naturally my next email was to ask for a refund. In response, the owner did not address my request at all and instead replied... "no one deserves your energy you are blocked". You can see his reply below that he used the same language in his response "Be blessed and blocked". Since he can't block me from Yelp which is a public website, I am guessing this is a line just he uses a lot? It feels to me extremely passive aggressive and unprofessional. I will take this up with my bank as a next step. This is just a word of caution for anyone thinking of using this salon. If you have a great experience and like your hair you will probably have no issues. But if you ever express dissatisfaction in their services, be prepared.... you aren't going to get any help. AND... you might find yourself in the same situation I'm in... navigating nasty, passive aggressive messages on top of having bad hair. UPDATE: FYI, the owner changed his response to sound less passive aggressive and hostile. He is now trying to insinuate that I did something to deserve poor treatment. I'm a completely reasonable person with pretty low key expectations for my hair. I'm usually of the mindset that it will grow back. But I am still really upset at how poorly I was treated by the owner for ZERO reason. He acted like I was personally attacking him by telling him I didn't like my haircut and wanted it fixed. I went to another salon a couple weeks ago to get the cut fixed. I was in and out in under 45 minutes in and out and I was completely happy with my cut. When doing her consult, the stylist at the other salon said "I hate to talk poorly about another stylist's work but *WOW* this cut is just so uneven." She took photos of the before and after and posted them on her Instagram... it was that bad. It highlights to me how messed up it was that the owner of 606 was trying to gaslight me into believing it was a great cut that "frames my face beautifully." I don't know what this guy has going on personally that he chose to take my feedback personally, gaslight me, refuse me help, then act like I deserved it... but I know I didn't deserve this experience. I hope no one else has to go through this same thing. read more

I had the most pleasant experience at 606 and am glad to have found what I assume will be my first regular salon in Chicago from now on. I had my hair cut by Jackson himself, who owns 606 and has created a lovely, spacious, plant-filled spaces nestled in Wicker Park. Jackson explained why/how he was cutting my hair very clearly as he was doing so. I came in with the general "I need to revive my hair but don't know how" request and was surprised with a lob-ish (long bob) cut with shorter layers for texture. Felt so fine and so fresh afterwards! Jackson is so friendly and has an artistic touch to everything he does, just ask him! He also informed me of free "cleanups" with each haircut so that your hair doesn't get to messy or heavy as it grows out. Really great value compared to other salons I've checked out in Chicago, imo. It was her first haircut at 8 years old, and Ryan listened to her wishes and gave her a fantastic cut that she loved. She was nervous and was having big feelings about this first cut. First, I went to cut my hair and I loooooved how my hair looked! The haircut was so cool and exactly what I wanted (even tho I myself could not well describe what I wanted, tbh ahahah) After that I came back for the coloring and brought my boyfriend to get his hair cut too. I went to Brett after I had a complete hair disaster during COVID somewhere else. After giving it some time to grow out, I was neurotic to get it cut again to say the least. Brett listened to me closely and immediately calmed my anxiety. For the record, I have very thin, fragile hair that easily damages. Brett worked meticulously to give me the most beautiful balayage (sun kissed) highlights and cut. He also added Olaplex to the color to save my hair. Easy reservation handling and (almost) real time communication via yelp - Jackson replied back to me via text on multiple times within 3-4 minutes in addition to the reminder texts closer to the appointment. I had to reschedule once and for the rescheduled appointment, i was 10 minutes late as well. Shame on me but Jackson was very accommodating. 2. These guys really know what they are doing but what sets them apart is how they deconstruct the concept, simplify and explain the techniques to a layman like me. 3. Really "chill" ambiance with two great hairstylists. How often do we only hear blow dryers during our salon visits? My visit was almost therapeutic with a drink, pleasing ambiance and a great stylist (Brett) who gave me my space but still managed to connect and communicate Reasons why they are awesome - 1. I have thick, curly hair (3Cish) and Brett was so patient as he cut my hair and applied the highlights and toner. Special shout out to this guy who spent extra time on my hair on a Saturday night. 2. If you know enough about curly hair, you will know that it often looks different from when you exit the salon to the next day :) Here's where Jackson was extremely helpful. He scheduled me for a quick 30 min follow up complimentary session to reduce the weight to avoid the dreaded pyramid and also suggested that I come in for a periodic "check in" to reduce the weight and maintain the haircut 3. Jackson even showed me how to use some of Paul Mitchell's latest curly hair products and offered some samples as well. Cant wait to test them out! Brett has been cutting and coloring my hair for over 10 years and I highly recommend him. I started seeing him when he was at another salon in West Town and followed him to the 606 Salon in Bucktown. Brett is a master at both permanent and demi-permanent hair color, and was even a hair color instructor in seminars throughout the US for a time. He will give you the hair color you want, which for me is demi-permanent natural-looking color that lets some of the gray show through. Brett will also give you the kind of cut or style you looking for and will offer honest feedback if he doesn't think what you want will work. Finally, Brett is pleasant to talk to and is conversant in a wide variety of topics (ask him about Victorian farmhouse restoration).
